[Q] Charger output to low while using GPS via BT? - Sony Ericsson XPERIA X10 Mini

Hi all,
Just wondering if this is normal or if I need to check something:
When I use the Google navigation while the mini pro (on 2.1) is connected via BT to my car radio and I listen to music also from the mini via BT, the charger I'm using in my car is not able to charge the mini. After app. 30 min I can clearly see that the battery is getting low instead of getting charged. Am I expecting to much from my mini or do i need to check something here?
br
Schronk

....am I the only one experiencing this?

i've had a similar situation with my gf's x10 while being charged and wifi tethering the battery level would drop instead of rise. in order to stop this i forced the cpu to stay at 245mhz and it fixed this issue. i'm sure you could do the same with the mini. you would have to be rooted and get one of the many apps that let you control your cpu clock speed.

Thanks...I'll try an check next time...

Battery question. Yet again

So I know this has been talked about over and over again....even so..can someone please explain to me why this phone running stock rom ..custom rom...stock kernel custom kernel ...whatever the combo...drains solo fast? I am on my 2nd battery tmo nicely sent out free of charge thinking i got a bad one...yet the issue remains..i charge overnight..unplug ..go to work...8am ...stay in the shop 2 hrs...phone dark/silent.. get loaded up (delivery driver) get in the truck. Stick my phone on my clingo car mount turn on my screen to start an mp3...batery is at 85...from there i take maybe 60 mins of talk throughout the day..have mp3player running and use a Max of half hour navigation...around 2 pm battery is down to maybe 30 if not less...by the time i leave work at 4 it is in the red telling me to plug in.. mind you i even use a car charger here and there throughout the day...i have noticed this thing drains 3 times faster than it charges..i can even have GPS on...charger in...and it will stay about even or more times than not be less then when i plugged it in ...
Again having read a million of these posts...I cannot find any rhyme or reason for this other than luck of the draw? Some get 40 hrs some get 5?

Woah your post is really hard to read.
First of, using the GPS navigation app is very cpu intensive. You could tell it is when your phone starts to heat up. The more CPU intensive an app is, the faster the battery will drain. Secondly, if you have alot of syncing aps, your battery will obviously drain faster. My phone will last upto two and a half days without syncing and with heavy use. I'm not sure what you are trying to say with the charger, but the car charger isn't as powerful as the home charger from my experience--but I have noticed some car charger are *more* powerful than the other lower quality car chargers. Like with some chargers, my phone was able to charge while playing music in the car.
There is an issue with the DRM integrated with the newer roms (like the OTA). Together with the samsungs mediahub, it drains a signifant amount of battery. Some users report having better battery life after uninstalling or freezing the said apps--this requires root priviledges of course.

[Q] 2.1 impression and battery life.

Updated my Mini to 2.1 from 4 days now-
Rooted using z4rot just to load setCPU.
2.1 in general is not so much different from 1.6, at least for normal user.
No significant performance improvement, no killer new functions. Just a "fine tuning work" in my opinion.
The bad come in just 2 areas.
1- Antenna reception.
Using 1.6 where I live I have a steady 3g network. Using 2.1 some time I discover that I'm under GPRS (i think the H icon mean GPRS, I'm voda so at least in Italy no EDGE network)
The antenna sensitivity is whorst than before...
2- Battery
Battery life is TERRIBLE using 1.6 I can go for an entire day (at least 8am-6pm)
Now in a few hours (4-5 not more) I have to recharge.
BT off, Wifi off.
Anyone experienced such decay of battery?
Can be the rooting process?
Any suggestion?
I have to try to switch off 3g but I dont like to use the slow GPRS so im not inclined in doing it1
H is HSPA which is 3G and others fast networks. If you had GPRS there would be G on your phone But i was confused too first time.
Battery seems same like before. I browse net, play games and listen music alot, so i need to recharge every night anyway. I'd guess some app eat it and maybe after some restarts it will settle. Synchronizing g-mail with phone ate alot of battery for me... but after a while its ok.
Ok, thanks for the H tips. So "H" is better that 3g!
Wow.
For battery life: yes I use google service so is always in sync
I think is one of the whorst design flaw of Android.
I like to be able to "open" sync in time I choose, for ex 10 min. in a windows of 30 min, ecc.
No software on the market do this automatically and ia polished way.
Can be set CPU causing more problem that the battery can save?
Disable Background data
Switch off Wifi Bt when not in need
then charge it when around 20% battaery
Doing this my battery life now is 2-3 days
Earlier with 1.6 it was 1 day max
wifi and bt are alredy off. background data?
turning that off is like to use a nokia of some years ago..
I depend on gmail etc.
intresting the tips of 20%, so you not charge at end of battery?
just when is arrived at 20%?
how it can have such effect?
with setcpu my battery now lasts for 20-24h, keeping minimal frequency at 122 and with ondemand scaling.
bt on for 2-3h, wifi on only when needed, sync always on but, the most important, only 2g. 3g uses a lot of your juice, use it only when needed. On 2g you still receiving emails and gtalk/tweets, and for an entire day. With 3g my battery lasts for 8h only.
ok, Ill give 2g a try.
Unfortunately Voda Italy has no EDGE at all...so if no 3g we are stuck using VERY VERY SLOW gprs.
i just use like 1:30 hrs of screen (on) AT 50%, i always use 2G network, background data conection like 2:00 Hrs, BT OFF, GPS OFF, WiFi OFF, All Syncronization OFF, some phone call (like 5 min per day), and i use set CPU to set the phone on demand between 122~600 MHz, with lucky i get 18 Hrs. of battery life...
Any advice?

I think 18 hours is Ok. Difference maybe is due to screen brightness; I use mine at 0%....
my battery last much longer with 2.1, i did a test, i put my phone in airplane mode overnight after charging it to 100%, unplugged the charger and went to sleep, checked it in the morning 8 hours later and it was STILL on 100%!
put it back to normal mode and the battery drains 1-2% per hour
Yeah, airplane mode is just the same with powering off, especially if you left it while you sleep dude...
Sent from my U20i using XDA App
I keep background data off and Data Traffic disabled and get about 1.5 days battery life. However, in Airplane mode, after 2.1 update, I have observed battery drains faster than 1.6.
^^ Use the Indian Firmware dude
its much better than flashed ones
Also charge phone when around 20% to get max battery life
Background data ON, Data Traffic enabled, live wallpaper (circuit board), Opera and mail one hour, BT 1 hour WIFI OFF, 1-2 hour call and sometime more.
24 to 32 hour Battery life.
I use Juice Defender and Set CPU.Battery charge when around 10 - 20 %.
^^Thats great
Calling for 30min decreased my battery life by 15-17% :O
My mini reboots every time i plug the in to charge, i saw there are some ppl with the same problem but i cant find a fix.
i did install the Nordic build.prop but repaired my phone when the update for my side came out. Can that be the problem?
I find the only thing now that really drains my Battery fast is playing games (Angry birds will drain my Battery in about 2-3 hours) otherwise.. if I don't play games my Battery lasts about 2 days. (up to a max of 3 days)
(I listen to about 3-4 hours of Music (over BT) each day, have Wifi on all the time I am at home, and use just a little bit of 3G when I am out (but I turn it off when its not needed)
Don't drain the battery to 0% this is really bad for Lithium battery's better to do top ups... and use USB to charge rather than the wall charger (lower charge rate will give you longer performance)
Run Launcher Pro Home screen replacement (I think its better than the stock one)
some software can really drain the battery fast, it tends to vary from person to person but I installed Nimbuzz and my battery went down like a sinking ship.
hope that helps..

When you say "Repaired your phone" you mean you put the build prop back to your old Kit code then Repaired with PC comp/SEUS? if you left the build.prop file as Nordic then you would probably still be on Nordic..
I ran nordic for a while and had no issues at all, then used Bin4ry's flash tool and a downloaded firmware to get my phone back to the correct Kit, I found it easier than playing with the build prop, its worth a try anyway..

Ok let me try explain .. i changed the build.prop to get the update but it did not work for me. So i downloaded Bin4ry's flashtool and software a flashed 2.1 on my phone.
I am on world generic (bought the phone in UK unbranded), when the update was availeble via SEUS i just plugged it in and did a repair, still with the same build.prop i edited.
I presumed it got flashed away with the repair i did
with the flash from Bin4ry an the repair from SEUS i got this reboot bug, so now i have no idea what to do next.
How do i know what kit i am on?

2 day users - Optimal battery settings?

Wanted to know from those getting 2 days out of the mini pro, what are your systems settings to make this possible.
1: I have my screen to less than 50%, can only still manage a day.
2: Do you guys turn off 3G HDSPA?
3: Does wifi use more or less battery than HDSPA?
4: Any of you using a blue tooth headset?
5: Any specific apps to kill?
6: Any special battery conditioning done? If so steps?
7: Do you guys have exchange e-mail on? push or pull?
The battery meter is showing more than 50% going to the screen.
Good that it seems I don't have an rouge apps and the wireless doesn't seem to take up too much battery, but a let down that I can't get more than a days worth of battery.
Found some decent battery recommendations here
Mike
Why are you trying to make your battery last 2 days? Do you not have access to a charger everynight?
Also I do not recommend you 'kill' any apps, due to the nature of Android. If you 'kill' an app, it's very likely it will just start up again, using more CPU cycles than if you just left it idle. This is especially an issue if you are using an auto-killer.

1. set 40%, add widget at front wall for fast switching (to 80%)
2. turn off mobile network (data), add widget at front wall for fast switching (to enable)
3. -
4. no
5. using system panel lite to clean and root uninstaller to remove apk at system app (currently memory at 230M-240M)
6. restart phone 3 time per day, use 1800mAh, charge phone when >5% energy, to 100% (45minutes), turn off while charging is more better.
7. no - exchange e-mail running at background processor (any unwanted background I will kill or remove; currently only 3 apps still running)
use dark theme/wallpaper for energy efficient (low brightness) and use earphone to listen music
=)

I'm not sure what value this message is supposed to provide. I've seen folks post that they can get 2 days or better out of the phone, if so what's wrong with wanting to do the same?
Also note that there are times when it's inconvenient to charge and I'd like to defer charging. I'm pretty much out of juice by end of day the work day, but would like to have a few more hours of battery left, having the phone on the charger all the time isn't always convenient.

I understand if your phone is starting to go flat then you might want to start conserving battery, but if you have the ability to charge it then why not?
I agree with r33p. Using a task killer is possibly one of the worst things you can do to try and save battery. Using less memory does not save battery at all.
Also im not sure if this is true, but using a dark theme does not save battery as the backlight is still on, but screen is just 'hiding' it to create the black you see. So if anything it uses more battery.
I tend to keep a widget on my home screen to turn off data, wifi, and bluetooth. I turn them on when I need them, turn the off the rest of the time. As long as you aren't doing heavy internet browsing on your phone, you should be able to get two days use out of it.
Hopefully we'll get some custom roms for these things so I can justify rooting my phone. Then I'll uninstall all of the stock apps I don't want, both to clean up my app screen and to hopefully stop some of those background processes I don't need.

I must agree. Using a dark background does not save battery. That only works for oled or amoled based screen like the galaxy s series. Also they're right, don't use a task killer. Terminating apps just consumes more battery.

i can last 1,5 day without charging.
if i dont do anything special besides reading mail and answering a few whatsapp messages i do about 3-4% an hour. if i dont do anything at all, like at night, it uses 1-2% an hour.
1.screen is 35%
2.i have 3g on. sometimes i put it on 2g only
3. i dont know but i turn off wifi en bluetooth whenever i dont need it.
4. i use bluetooth in my car tot connect my phone with my car. unfortunately this uses a lot of battery by being just connected.
5. i kill the popgames, this uses a lot of battery
6. most times i let the battery go empty and only then start charging with the powerconnector, not through usb with a computer.
7. i dont have exchange but imap push email and another account pop3 which connects once every hour. i use the app k9mail
last weekend i did 2,5 day but i was abroad and didnt have roaming data and turned off wifi en bluetooth.
i did 1% a hour except when i was driving and connected my phone to my car.
but still 2,5 day

Does 2g only save battery over wifi and 3g? If so, is it sufficient for e-mail?
Mike
I normally put all of my most used widgets on the front page for quick access
3g or wifi pref. 2g is painfully slow.
Yea and forget appkillers, delete the apks or freeze the unwanted services.
The tricky part - what (not) to delete.

You need root to do that, however.

yes 2g saves battery
i was told that because of the continues switchting between G, 3G and H the battery consumes a lot of energy.
when you put it on 3g only or 2g only it saves battery.
becasue i dont have 3g everywhere i go i put it on 2g so that i can make calls everywhere i am.
if i need to do some things on the internet i switch it back to 3g.
2g is enough to recieve mail and whatsapp messages.
my mail wont come in as fast as wifi or 3g but that doesnt matter to me.

How do you set it to H only? Is this via WCDMA only?
I'd love to drop the bloatware, but want a clean root option that won't affect functionality.

I have about 2 days. Currently I'm on 82% 12h since charge. My experience:
1. I keep 3G switched off most of the time when I'm outside. Only if I really need the speed for uploading a photo or update an app.
2. I keep Wifi running all the time at home.
3. I have disabled Location&Security both Use network and GPS. These seems to drain battery even if maps and latitude is disabled.
4. In the carrier settings I have disabled automatic mode and going for manual mode and selected my carrier.
5. I always use the back button on any app until I reach the home screen before locking.
My idle drain is about 1.5-2%/h when I'm at home with wifi. Outside with 2G it's draining a bit more and with 3G it uses insanely much battery.
I have lot of push services running (fb/g+/twitter-notifications, Whatsapp and gmail + an Exchange account)
I have also noticed that the battery calibration is a bit flaky. From time to time I run the phone until it dies (sometimes at 8-10% but sometimes at 30%). Then I'm unplugging the battery for a minute, plug it back and charge and it have calibrated and doesn't die at 30%.
Another thing I have noticed is that I can't get more than 4172mV charge. The battery should be able to charge to 4200mV.
Two good apps for monitoring battery usage is BetterBatteryStats and Battery Monitor Widget (which is more than just a widget)
do you guys charge till it reaches 100% or just till it turns green?

thats one other discovery I have made.
when the phone says 100% it's actually still charging (can be seen that there is a charge indicator at the battery and also can be seen from Battery Monitor Widget)
Another thing is that when it has reached 100% it starts to drain battery until it reaches 95% then it starts to charge again. (nothing uncommon with that) but the phone still shows 100% so sometimes when it's unplugged it can actually be at 95% (but starts to countdown from 100%).
Battery Monitor Widget can alert when it's actually fully charged with a notification.

Battery life not so good on BACKside-IHO-VM670-10172011 when hotspot is on.

Well first off I have a LG Optimus V phone which I got on ebay then was having speed issues with it so then I got an exchange from virgin mobile. It was stock at 2.2.2 and it wouldn't let me tether. So after going through a bunch of black screen issues I finally got BACKside-IHO-VM670-10172011 on it. So now whenever I get the hotspot on the battery slowly gets depleted even though it is plugged in and should be charging. The only time it doesn't seem to deplete is when it is fully charged then the hotspot is on and plugged in to charge. So is there something I can do to make it stop depleting so quickly when it is at least half way charged? I have only seen a few other threads for getting battery life better and it seems like they say to switch to a different rom or run less things which I have.
Install WiFi Tx Power from market and try a lower Tx value than you currently have.
What would you suggest it be put at? I have it at 18dBm for now.
Are you overclocking at all or just running at 600mhz?
Sent from my LG-VM670 using XDA App
It is running at default power.
I have the settings for the CPU at default it hasn't been slow at all ever since I got the replacement. Basically I am mostly using the hotspot for now as I my mom is using the Ovation MC760 usb internet with virgin mobile. So to prevent a slow down for her I just use my phone. But I have been using applications and games when I am out and have nothing else better to do.

Strongest Car Charger?

As the title says...what's the strongest charger? I've noticed my current one when using the GPS with navigation even with it plugged in it'll still lose battery life. Current model I have does 750mA. Are there better ones out there?

There are ones made for tablets that outputs 2.1A. Not sure how much our phones can actually draw from it though.
EDIT// Per Entropy

Basically, anything with a rating of 0.7 amps or above which shorts D+ and D- together (indicating a dumb charger) will behave the same.
Our internal charging chip limits to 650 mA on AC and 400 on USB. So the only thing you have to watch out for with cheap chargers are:
1) Voltage WAY off from 5 volts (USB standard) at 650 mA load
2) Does not properly signal "dumb charger" causing the phone to charge at 400 mA

right my problem is finding one that not only draws 1000mA and uses it. I have one that when I plug it in it'll say AC charging and on the unit it says 1000mA but it obviously isn't doing it's job if I'm losing battery life while running GPS navigation in the car. Short of me buying a bulking inverter for the car so I can plug a wall outlet plug directly into it I'd prefer to find a USB to 12V that works right.
I briefly thumbed this thread to get a bit more educated but still no luck on finding a product that works...

his edit says 650 on wall outlet 400 on USB no matter how big a unit you buy you'll always get 650 Max. Lower brightness and only have the GPS going

I have the AT$T-branded car charger and when I was using the phone for nav I had no issues with over drain unless I also was streaming Slacker or Pandora at the same time. I now have a truck with built-in nav, so I no longer use the phone for that.
my concern is because I just got a Passport 9500ix and I'm using the live cord so it requires the screen to be on, bluetooth on (which is on anyways for my handsfree), and a GPS signal to be on.
I normally don't use GPS either in the car as I have a built in nav for my vehicle.
I use mine with BT in the car and streaming Slacker with the screen on constant and I never turn off GPS. Have yet to have a charging deficit issue with the aforementioned charger.
well the LiveCable had a USB port on it, plugged it in, and says Charging (AC).
Let's see how this thing holds up I'll re-post in this thread if there's a problem. I'll try it's port instead of my current socket which is not sufficient.
Per another recommendation by Entropy I use SetCPU to limit the cpu to 800 MHz when the navigation app is active. There's still enough power left at this state to allow the phone to build a slight charge if plugged in, or to limit battery drain if it's not.
The simple reality of the situation though is that nav consumes a ton of battery. Running the screen, rendering the maps, running the gps, downloading the maps over cell data etc. all at once consumes a lot of power on any device.
In situations where the battery is getting very low but I still need to use the navigation app I also sometimes just turn off the screen and rely on the audio directions. This helps limit power drain quite a bit.
I wonder how much current he official Samsung car dock supplies?

I still have a motorola rapid charger from a while back. You guys know much more than i do im sure, especially with the mA pull but ive never had drain while running GPS with brightness on high on my motorcycle.

interesting about setting CPU down when running navigation! I'll have to try that.
Well the good news is with a combination of the stock USB cable plugged into the Live cord for the radar I'm actually charging now while using navigation (slowly but it's charging). Full brightness though it'll either hold steady or drop maybe 1% in 45min or so. Anything but high brightness and it'll charge.

Samsung car dock just uses whatever its input is. The phone treats it the same as an AC power supply - 650 mA limit regardless of what the power supply capability is.
Interesting note: The power supply's method for signaling a "dumb charger" becomes irrelevant on official docks. All the phone knows is it's docked and it has power, it assumes an AC charger. As a result, power supplies that are intended for iDevices will get detected as USB (400 mA limit on I777) if connected directly, but AC if connected via dock.

Recent versions of SetCPU make it really easy to set a profile that triggers automatically when the nav app is started. Well worth the $1.99 price of the app.

Hmm... I confess I haven't paid close attention to it lately, but if I remember right if auto-brightness is selected the screen automatically dims between turns but then ratchets up brightness when a turn is approaching. Maybe setting auto-brightness might handle the issue for you...?

-as for SetCPU I'm running that setting now. Once or twice SetCPU has been granted superuser came up while running (fine with me it's doing it's job)
-as for auto brightness I'll try with it later. The software Escort uses is a proprietary program and not directly google's maps program (although it does use it's maps).

you could always flash siyha kernel. it has a setting in ex tweaks to set charging currents. you can up it for all of the devices so usb smart and dumb chargers all charge at 650mA though that might damage a pc usb port... just be careful. and the hardware limits it to 650mA, no more, a lot less

I do have Siyah kernel any link to a thread about this or a quick how to? I'm sure if I played with it enough I'd figure it out but since you're familiar with the subject I figured you'd hook me up! I tend not to play with these types of tweaks too much on my phone... :good:
I have the OEM Samsung car charger. Thankfully, I can have GPS on while plugged in and the phone still charges up, albeit slowly, but it certainly doesn't drain.
Here's the car charger I have:
