[Q] HUSTON WE HAVE A PROBLEM! handset mic not working? - XPERIA X10 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

So i was in the middle of a conversation with my friend earlier today and suddenly they could no longer hear me. When i got home i called my house and let the answering machine pick up so i could leave a test message.
ABSOLUTE SILENCE! So am I screwed? will re-flashing my phone fix the handset's microphone? Is it a battery issue? Should I send it in for repairs? Get a replacement?
Also I've only ever dropped this phone once, months ago from a height of about 5 centimeters, it's also never gotten wet or been anywhere humid.
HELP!

Amazing how the problems range on the x10..
Everything from overheating to connection problems.
The best clue is does the phone still do this or just randomly.
If it still does this the MIC is dead..
if it does it randomly, hell only knows.

how the hell can the mic "die" wtf?

Bad audio decoder..
There could be many things that could cause this.
Crappy connections.
Hell only knows and SE employees that are paid to lie about the bad x10 units.
But rest assured that the x10 comes with a 2 year warranty.
So send her back ASAP!

Holy Jesus, i just reverted the phone back to branded 1.6 and it magicaly works. HUH? what kind of black magic is this? XD

lol.. bad firmware

Go to the service test menu and test your microphone there by recording a short message. If you are on 1.6 on screen lock, it's Menu, Back, Back, Menu, Back, Menu, Menu, Back. On 2.1 change Menu to Home key...

First : If u yell too much it goes to hell.. simple as that..
Second : too much dirt between mic and mainboard.. (just assuming that mic is not welded to it)
Third : unperfect material which leads to damaging mic even with normal use..
Many reasons why mic can die.. But it happens to all phones, not only SE
Solution : Use your headset, check then if u have sound, its hardware (mic), if not try to restart then reflash..
Hope that helps

What do you mean change menu to home key? I was on eclair, now i changed to 2.1 generic, unless that's the same thing?

You forgot forces beyond human control like voodoo and satanic curses.

*Update* my mic is apparently working fine, now the issue is that no one on a land line can hear me, apparently, yet mobile to mobile seems to work flawlessly. What gives? =/ This just keeps gettine weirder and weirder.

[Q] Ear Speaker Crackle

Hello all
Got the S2 recently...was an HD2 user (with android) and am really impressed with the performance of the S2..though I am not too happy with two things.
- Battery...i just got the VillianRom installed..and I hope to see an improvement there..
- Ear speaker jarring...the ear speaker seems to crackle at certain frequencies. I checked the whole forum and there were some others with the same complaint and was asked to use the Volume+ app..which I have and to be honest i dont see much of a diffrence..the crackle is still there. I want to be sure if this is a hardware issue or a software issue...and how can I really solve it?
Can someone help?
ah.. another fellow s2 holder that has this issue.
YES! I have the same problem and its driving me crazy!!!
its random, and its buzzes, crackle or even sounds like the earspeaker is blown!
What have you done with it? I think I'll probably go change it but just checking here if you have found the solution?
there's one person with a vibrant saying he blew hot air into the earspeaker and it solved the problem (dunno if its advisable) and he didnt say how did he do that.
I seriously have no idea what you're talking about. I use Spotify non-stop on my SGS2, no crackling thing.
I'm not talking about the back speaker, its the front one where you listen to when you're in a call.
Hello! I have the same problem! Like it is distorting. I will take it to service centre today.
I really can't remember I posted that, my bad.
ok I got back my phone from Samsung Service Centre, after a second persuasion they changed the front panel (whole LCD including the front speaker, not sure if the back speaker too, I don't know the structure of the phone).
And now, it's solved!! NO MORE BUZZING when making/receiving calls!
Definitely go ask for an exchange or a change of your panel guys! It's a HARDWARE ISSUE.
Thank you for your answer! I have the same problem. They dont belive that is something wrong. They changed the speakerphone and no solution. Now they tell me that must be something wrong with our network, which I dont belive... I was also suspecting that all have the same problem, they just dont recognize.
Thanks a lot!

Call clarity

Has anyone else been told that they sound muffled on the phone... My gf keeps complaining I sound like the mic is a mile away.... On the plus side, it shortens the time I have to spend on the phone.....
Afterall, whats the point in her trying to talk to me for 30 minutes when she is gonna be home soon and just wanna chew my ear off some more!? Maybe I'm better off w bad call clarity haha

I noticed that too.
Yet voice recordings are very clear.
It must have something to do with the way sprint handles voice data.
Also, incoming calls sound super clear.
Maybe we can fix that in software?
Calls sounds like crap to me but everyone I speak to says it sounds good.

Either our ears/speech are very different, or the phone is really good but cell towers are very different.
I am getting the same thing. My wife just hung up on me because she could not understand me on the phone. She said I sound like I am mumbling. I thought it was the phone mic, so I plugged in a headset, nope still sounded like crap. Now I'm debating taking the phone back.

1) When you say that you plugged in a headset, does that also mean that your mic of the headset was being used, not the phone mics?
2) Did you do the EVRC-B fix described in the developers' forum?

Check the FAQ page and read about the Call Quality and EVRC and EVRC-B Codecs respectively... I don't have your issue, but maybe it will help.

1. Yes I was using the headset mic. I got this phone on launch and every caller says they cannot hear me.
2. Yes I did the EVRC-B fix. It seemed to help a little, but then I did a phone reset due to Sense crashing all the time (and I mean constantly) and I was using my EVO 4g class 2 sdcard. So I updated to a class 10 card, factory reset the phone, no Sense crashes, the EVRC-B fix still in place but my call quality is crap. It sounds like my words drop out.
My wife and I both have the 3D phone, and we are always saying...what?..what? we never had this issue. I would agree that the call quality is horrible on this phone. I emailed HTC on this matter and Im just waiting for a response. Will post it here when I get it.
it is the 3D, not the network
I swap photos periodically, and it is DEFINITELY the 3D in particular, not the network. My Evo 4G sounds crystal clear always. Never had anyone asking me to repeat myself. Same with the other phones I use on Sprint.
I tried the below and it did not seem to help at all.
I first noticed this issue when setting up voice mail and my outgoing message sounded garbled. I believe it is over-agressive noise reduction.
Here is the fix which did not work for me:
dial "##data# select "edit mode" input your MSL (you'll have to get it from sprint customer service or follow the guide here: [Only registered and activated users can see links. Click Here To Register... ] I got mine from customer service very easily just by asking, but sometimes they are hesitant to give it out.) select "Advanced Options" enable "EVRC-B" change "Home Orig" and "Roam Orig" to "EVRC-B" tap menu and save changes
EVRC-B is the more advanced cellular voice encoding format, and should improve your call quality. FYI, if you for whatever reason you don't like the change or are uncomfortable with it you can always change it back (i.e. we didn't make any permanent changes)
I emailed HTC about this issue and this is their response...and yes I told them I have a HTC 3D and they replied as if I had a the older 4G
"I understand the importance of having a high quality sound from your HTC EVO 4G. I will be more than happy to assist you with this. I first recommend performing a soft reset on the device. This is done by powering the phone off and removing the battery for 30 seconds. Then, reinstall the battery and test the phone.
Next, I recommend uninstalling any third party applications from the device. This is done by going to: Home> Menu> Settings> Applications> Manage Applications. Tap each program and then tap Uninstall. When finished, press Home and test the phone.
Finally, I recommend performing a factory reset on the device. Note that this will erase all of your personal data from the phone and reset it to the factory settings of the current ROM. Please ensure that your personal data has been backed up prior to resetting the device. To reset it, go to : Home> Menu> Settings> SD & Phone Storage> Factory data reset. Follow the on screen instructions to complete the reset and evaluate the results. These steps should allow your device to function normally. I do apologize for any inconvenience"
I posted in another section of the forums in regards to this issue . At first I though it was my Otter Box Defender case causing the problems . But after looking at the phone in the case and the mic hole leading through the case to the mic I saw they had cut this little sliver of a slot for the mic to hear through . I took it apon myself to modify the battery back . I took a triangle shaped file and filed the notch till it was the exact size of the opening on the bottom mic . Now everyone hears me clearly unless of course there is alot of background noise . If you are nervous about filing your battery back down . Try making a few calls with the battery back off and see if callers hear an increase in call clarity or not . With the back off and they say much clearer then I would point in the direction of the battery back . Thats how I resolved my issue . The hole I made looks stock so I doubt anyone would ever question me about it anyways due to the fact it looks stock . Just another possible avenue , but if callers say you still sound muffled even with the battery back off then I would say somethign is wrong with the unit .

Thanks for the tip! I found that holding the mic closer to your mouth also cures the problem but feels unnatural with top of phone away from the ear.I just filed my notch, will report results when I test it.

Interferences in earbud

I have a pretty annoying problem because from the earbud (under the wrtitten SONY) comes interfecences while i'm speaking with someone using the mobile line.
The interference is like that of the speaker near a mobile phone but from the earbud.
someone has the same problem or mine is a isolated case?

I think you mean earpiece...not earbud.
If you hold the phone near your ear you can hear a very high pitched hiss sound while you are talking? The sound has a pattern to it. If so, then I have tried 2 of these phones and they both do it. I don't now if they all do it, but it seems to be common. Some people who don't have such good high-pitched hearing will not hear it at all. You will never hear it if you are outdoors...only if you are at home in a quiet room.

I hear it too. It's the usual GSM "cellphone interference" sound.
Hi i have the same i hear that xd
But what i have noticed this is only in GSM mode ...at WDCMA its ok..i cant hear this .
I have the same problem. Got my first phone replaced and the new one came today with the same problem.
Try only with WDCMA (3G) and See if that help.

I tried only GSM mode and there's no problem, only WCDMA -> the same thing
Good also WCDMA/GSM..
sometimes the problem seems to disappear
Yeah I too have the same issue.
Its not everytime but sometimes,
Its like a electronics interference noise.
Don't know what's this all about ://

i can hear that hissing too, i ve searched about it, and it looks like latest smartphones have that kind of problem, the only solution i could find is not to place your ear directly on the earpiece, fortunately this phone has a great in-call volume...
earpiece hissing, crackling, buzzing - problem solved
well amigos, the problem finally has been solved for me, reading this forum https://discussions.apple.com/thread/3414732?start=0&tstart=0
so i turned off my phone, i removed the sim card, i cleaned it using a soft cloth, and then i inserted it back, making sure the sim card was placed correctly in the tray, i tested it several times and guess what, there was no more hissing anymore, so the problem is the micro sim-card, those sim-cards must be placed correctly otherwise it will make that hisssing sound
i hope this works for you too
greetings from colombia...
Had my first two calls today, same problem. Interestingly, it gets louder/more noticeable when I'm actively speaking, not when the other party says something.
Sim-Card is fresh from the envelope, so there shouldn't be scratches, dust or fingerprints on it, but I'll try cleaning it up tomorrow. Got the phone set on GSM only, since I've got bad 3G/UMTS signal at home and I'm pretty sure constant "channel-hopping" would drain the battery.
Hi,
got xperia S yesterday. Great phone... only problem is GSM interference in the earpiece. It is there every time when phone is set to 2G. 3G is free of this issue. As I can hear at every call it's a bit irritating.
I don't know what should I do: sent it back to the store (bought from amazon), try to repair in the service centre or learn to live with it?
Can any of xperia S owners make a siple test: put the phone in "only GSM" mode and make one or two calls. Put earpiece close to the ear and listen to it. I wonder if it's design flaw and every xperis S have this issue, or only some of them....
Anyone who got his phone replaced and the new one came WITHOUT the same problem ???

Piotrze, im having same issue and till now i thought its a problem only of mine phone. And till now ive wanted to send it back to service but if everyone has the same issue it might not be accepted at service, idk.

[Q] speaker broken (not the audio one)

sorry to bother evryone but i cant find any topics seeing i dont know how to translate it.
i only get speaker (music) finds
so my speaker broke about 1 month ago . the one used for calling .
i went to get it repaired and was fixed.
now 3weeks later the same thing is happening.
distortion sound .
now i payed 50 euros for the first repair wich is still under warrenty .
but i want to know how this can happen . i dont drop my phone or cause it damg. in any way . always in a cover to prevent dirt etc piling up.
and i would rather not go back to get it fixed again for it to brake again in a matter of weeks.
especially since the guy that fixed it left his mark on my phone (toolmarks, bits broken of the corners of the frame etc.)
thnx in advance

There might be bad connection on pcb, it causes that volume is not so strong and sound has sometimes mixed channels. Maybe this could be the problem. But dont know how that guy solved it - maybe with some externeal soldering. I am also imaging about two other another problems, but Its really hard to say it without internal look. Sorry

WTF who was he? 50€ for THAT repair??? Personally I will kill him by my own phone after that looking "repair" for so huge price... He probably dontknow anything about opening plastic cases with special tools, even they cost only about 2€ on ebay...
Sorry for little OT, but must say it, because I am also servicing phones notebooks and so on... And these "repairmans" or "repair services" makes me really angry...
i agree on off topic
anyways thnx for you're reply, all he did actually was replace it and i dont even know if it was an original part (color differences from original)
so i can tell that it has bin replaced and the sound was alot better
it kinda sounds like your using a tiny speaker on to loud volume i suppose, and decreasing volume isnt helping.(crackling sound, distortion thats all i can come up with)
for now its doable i can still understand people (alot better then last time)
and it might be me but i feel like using another rom ferals now actually makes it sound a bit better (i could be wrong hard to test)
and i also didnt mention last time that on the audio speakers theres no problem .
arent they the same part ? i looked on the web and it looks like an L-shaped part that seem to match both speaker positions.
Thnx has bin pressed ofc.

Help | phone ear speaker

Hey, I have a mate 10 pro c432 v148.
Last weekend I decided to go to the water with the phone as it is supposed to be waterproof (not submerged just a few splashes).
Since then the phone was working normally except for one thing, the ear speaker suddenly outputs the sound at a very low volume (it's there just barely ear able).
Is there anything I can try to do to fix it? It doesn't seem like corrosion to me since it's still working..

There's an app on the play store called unclog your speaker.
Activate stereo+ , place the phone horizontally when u enter the app and run it for couple mins.
If your device is rooted then do this : https://forum.xda-developers.com/mate-10/themes/audio-mod-root-t3706954 and run the same app I mentioned before ( Be careful not to dmg your earphone speaker with this mod ! I have no idea how long can u run it maxed out with this mod and frankly I'm not interested in testing it on my own device lol ) - it should provide better results and the speaker experience is much more enjoyable with it.

The application solved the charity of the sound so I can understand the words, but the strength didn't change. I'm a bit afraid putting those mods on :/ wondering if the speaker membrane still has water on it even though 3 days have passed.

Yw, as for the mod I'd suggest at least using it without pushing the speakers.
As to why is it so quiet?
Idk, is it quiet enough that you can't make phone calls?
It should be working alright after a splash ( Unless u power hosed it ... ) so it might be just ur imagination.
Earphone speaker is pretty quiet, I was tweaking the mod 2day so I took the time to revert back to stock and it can't even be compared...
You have 2 options so far - Follow the guide I sent you or send it to the service.
The file from that guide should at least bring your speaker back to normal.
I guess I totally got used to it that I forgot how bad the Huawei implementation is.
You might run into issues while doing this like I have with the latest twrp.
Lemme know if you need some help! :good:
