[Q] Not able to make phone calls with google voice - XPERIA X10 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Has anybody had the same problem after upgrading to 2.1?
I get to option when I pick the international number in the phone book but then it makes the call without using google voice even if I pick the option to make it WITH google voice.

You mean you were able to under 1.6?
Google Voice may need a US proxy if you're outside the US.

for me it was useless under 1.6 and it's no better under 2.1

just a headsup
Making phone calls using Google voice does not work with the 2.1 update for the Xperia. It does not matter whether you want use Google voice to make all calls or international only. Somehow SE's software engineers changed the dial app in such a way that Google Voice does not work directly anymore.
Someone suggested a work around by going to the web browser and using Google voice through the browser to connect your phone calls (that is, have GV call your phone before connecting you to the other party).
On the other hand, the 2.1 update for the X10 allows me to use the Skype app over wifi here in the U.S. (something that my new Samsung Captivate cannot do). Oh well.

[Q] Google Voice on 2.1

Posting this to see if anyone else has this, and if any one knows how to make it work.
I use Google Voice for my international calls, but after the upgrade the dialer takes over, Google voice can not be used to "only make international calls"
i have to use "ask for every call" which is not the best solution.
[EDIT] that option does not work either
I'm having the exact same problem.
I even made several international phone calls, thinking that maybe Google Voice was running in the background... now I'll get hit with the charges for international calls from AT&T :s
Any solution to this problem?
I'm using the X10i 2.1 Global firmware on a X10a (AT&T)
hope this helps

Looks like as sony do not use default dialer it is going to be a problem

unfortunately the suggested process does not work
I found a way to make calls by google voice. I went to the browser, went to the google voice website, and from there, I placed the call. Then I received the phone call from my google number, and it connected me to the number I was calling.
It's more troublesome than just using the app, but it is a workaround.
Any other ideas or solutions?

When you do that, aren't you still using the GSM network and your sim card to have the call connected?
I am having identical problems (2.1 Nordic) and trying to use google voice over WiFi to avoid using network minutes but Sony's dialer takes over... hopefully sony or GV will update and fix this real soon... very frustrating

I use Google Voice for international calls... so I'm still using my GSM minutes, but just as a local call, not with international rates.
Have same problem. Cost me one expensive international phone call.
Generic FW, Build 2.0.A.0504 - X10i/ATT USA
GV screen comes up, then native dialer takes over. Have used workaround posted above, but naturally would just like to be able to use it as intended.
Just a heads up to anyone who has updated to 2.1.
I have the Rogers 2.1 and using AT&T as the carrier. GV does not work for ANY of my outgoing phone calls even when I specify to use GV only.
If the issue is SE's dialer, is there a way to revert back to the generic dialer?
Thanks
I'm also having this issue, only after recently upgrading my X10 to the generic 2.1 software. I wonder if anyone has found a solution yet?
I've had this problem since day 1, since I'm from Canada and use my GV to call my american / long distance friends. I have had to use the website workaround since day one, and it really bugs me. When I was working from the iPhone app, it worked properly (call me, then call the number I'm trying to call). Since switching to my X10a, I can't have it just call me, it uses the dialer directly.
So, I use up about 100-200k of my data plan to make the call. Not a big deal, just kind of annoying.

Voice calls maybe???

Just curious but have any of you that own it overseas able to use Google voice or the like to make calls? Very interested if its possible

I'm pretty sure the only way you would be able to do that is if you used Skype to make and recieve all your calls. You would have to get a Skype number, then pay the $2.99 for unlimited U.S. calling. More conveniently you could port your cell number to Google Voice and then have that number ring your Skype number. Whenever you left the house you would just have to make sure 3G was on (so you would have to get it from Sprint). Also the mic on it is pretty bad from what reviewers are saying, so you would need a bluetooth headset.
Edit: Forgot to point out Google voice won't make calls over 3G, hence why you would need Skype.
Edit 2: And of course the battery is very good so it makes this setup very possible.
Please help
Very imp. for me; just to make sure, i own a samsung galaxy tab and i want to switch to the flyer, does it work as a cell phone like the galaxy? or not?
I don't have a Flyer, but it was mentioned multiple times that there is no such gsm voice functionality: you can only talk via Skype. Also, the leaked manual didn't mention voice via gsm, but sms/mms connectivity is available. Now's the question: can somebody patch voice into a Rom?

[Q] Use GTablet as a phone extension?

Hey guys,
I have a Viewsonic G Tablet (running CyanogenMod 7.1) and a Sony Ericsson Xperia Play R800a (flashed with R800i UK Generic 4.0.2.A.0.42, locked bootloader, Rogers locked and not rooted).
What I am looking to do is use my G Tab as my phone when at home, like install it at my desk and answer calls and SMS from it directly. Somewhat like a bridge between my Xperia Play and my G Tab. Then, when not needed, just "disconnect" them and go my way with just the phone.
Answering SMS would be way faster with the USB keyboard I have and it would make a crazy looking home phone.
I tried searching on Google and in the forums but couldn't find anything... perhaps I missed something?
If you guys know something that can do what I'm looking...
Thanks!
There aren't any telephony components in the gTablet. That said, you can still do voip. The Google Voice app will let you do sms. And GrooveIP works with a Google Voice number. If you use GV, then you can use your tablet as a second device. You might be able to forward your cell phone to a GV number to transfer calls (don't think you can forward sms).
Skype also works on the gTablet.
Just listened to Android central's podcast and somebody mentioned getting the paid app gvoice. From what I understand it allows you to make calls via internet (wifi or cellular data) and receive them using your google voice number. dunno about being able to disconnect like the way you want but worth checking out

I installed Skype, then bought a phone number ($15 / year) and bought an international calling plan ($15 / year - optional) so I could be reached on vacation. I forwarded my phone to my Skype number, and voila! any calls coming to my home number go to my tablet.
Hey all, thanks for your ideas
I can't use GVoice since I'm in Canada, and I'm looking for something a lot easier
I basically want my tablet to act roughly like a Bluetooth headset (communication still handled by my phone on the GSM network) but with a dialer that would allow me to key in the number I want to dial.
Worse case scenario, I can live without the SMS but I would really like the phone to work as I want
Someone mentioned the G Tab does not have telephony capabilities. Can that be installed at all since what I'm looking for is hooking it up to my actual phone by Bluetooth and therefore don't require an actual SIM in my tablet?
there is an app called tablet talk, you can google it, which allows you to pair your tablet n phone via bluetooth to send n receive sms.

[Q] Using Google Voice to make phone calls? [Resolved]

Hey everyone, so as you can tell, the Galaxy Player 5 has the phone speaker grill and microphone placed just as if it was a phone. However, I can't seem to find a way to get Google Voice to allow making VoIP phone calls over the Galaxy Player since there isn't a native dialer app built into the phone (from what I can see).
Anyone know a fix around this? I use an AT&T unlimited non-smartphone data plan + DUN connect to have my Galaxy Player connected via the 3G HSDPA network 24/7 and I used it to make calls on my iPod touch prior to picking up a Galaxy. I would love to do the same with this more "Phone-like" device.
If this isn't possible since there isn't a dialer associated with this first "Android" non-phone devs, is there any chance to spoof it into thinking that there is a dialer app so it enables the "Call with Google Voice" function? Considering that it's only using VoIP and not an actual carrier network to carry the call through (unless I'm completely confused lol which is possible).
Thanks in advance!

If you get GrooveIP and combine it with the Google Voice app you can make and receive voice calls through a Google Voice account on the SGP. Many have had good results.
Yep. Get grooveip. It's a paid app but worth every penny. Works flawless.
Thanks both of you! Works great, well worth $5.

Google Voice - No Data

Does anyone have experience using Google Voice without a data plan? My sister just bought a phone to use with Page Plus, and is porting her number to Google Voice.
Do calls work correctly without data? I read a while back that Google implemented a feature in the Google Voice app that downloads the direct access numbers for all of your contacts when you first install the app. How does it handle new numbers that you dial?
Is there a good way to text people without saving their Google Voice "proxy" number, and still have it come from your Google Voice number, without using data?
I use Sipdroid with Google Voice on my tablet.
Inbound and outbound calls over WIFI work pretty well for me. I just dial regular phone numbers.
I've never really used texting with Google Voice.
google voice pay as you go no data plane
Does anyone have recommendation on how to set this up to play somewhat reasonable all together.
I know functionality will be limited when no Wi-Fi is available but......
Text >GV>T-mob carrier>my phone
Call>GV>answer
- yes>got the call
-no> be able to see voice mail notification an call to check the voice mail
