I've never used or had a reason to use a proxy server before, but it's pretty easy. I was Googling around for a solution to my tethering problems both with wired and wireless, the 3G eventually - most times sooner rather than later - goes in and out until you stop tethering and usually requires a reboot.
I found Proxoid. Just follow that link and you'll see instructions for use with different operating systems. This is not the only thread on XDA about this, but I didn't find it through XDA to begin with, and as far as I see, there's no thread about it in the Eris-specific section, and I know others with the Eris have been having trouble tethering and this solution might help them.
Proxoid has never once exhibited the same symptom with the 3G going in and out. I've only once had to stop and restart the Proxoid tethering on the phone, and that's all that was necessary, no reboot. I have had to re-run the "start-tunnel.bat" that comes in the Proxoid Windows download, which only has the files necessary so that you don't have to download the full Android SDK if you don't want to. There's nothing to install. The .bat files just runs an ADB command to let you use your phone as a proxy server.
Maybe Verizon can't detect the tethering this way, or whatever is going on. I did change one setting in the Proxoid app, and that's the User-Agent Filter, which I set to "Don't change".
This method has certainly been more reliable and less time-consuming than using the Wired and Wireless Tethering for root apps, or any other method I've tried (build in Froyo tethering, PDANet, et cetera).
I haven't confirmed it, but you *may* need to keep the screen on (Some ROMs you can set Android to keep the screen on while charging) or it may stop working. If someone else confirms this, please reply here.
I hope this helps someone.
Awesome...I'll definitely be giving this a try tonight!!! Thanks!
Good deal, I hope as with me that it works better for you than the normal tethering. Feel free to post your experiences here so anyone else can know if you like it better or not.
I will also try this out. My computer often doesn't see my wireless tether and I've never managed to get wired tether to work. Thanks for the heads up.

Thanks for the suggestion!! Once I figured out the process, I was able to whip right through a youtube video without a hitch...something that is extremely rare via standard tethering methods.
The only problem I have is that I need my phone sitting up on a window sill for adequate signal...so time to invest in one of three things: an ultra-long USB cable, a signal amplifier/repeater, or just a new phone that actually WORKS with wireless tethering.
Thanks again!

Glad to help! Give the author of Proxoid some props if you can. Glad it's helped. Be aware that although there is a technical limit of USB2 or lower of about 16 feet, if I remember correctly, not all devices will work at the maximum length, so make it as short as you absolutely have to. I've experimented in the past and the length limitation is true.
I don't know if new USB3 and USB3-certified cables have a longer range. I forget. I don't know if this would apply, going from a USB3 port to a USB2 device, but it's a good question.

Any way to encrypt signal (even really simply)?
I know when I go to this convention next week all the bored people are going to steal my bandwidth (VZW dialup is not fast enough for anyone but me).
I am pretty sure there was a way to configure WEP, tho I have only gotten WMWifiRouter to work one time. And it was because there were no other AP's in the area. For some reason if I am in an area where there is an AP but it's secured, my phone keeps prompting me to connect to it, and if I dismiss the message, it never properly initializes where any other device can connect to it.
No errors show up on the screen, it just doesn't show up as an available wireless AdHoc network. I've tried running the latest trial version, and the version that is in DCD's kitchen, same problem on both.
Maybe I'm just not smart enough to figure it out, or maybe my brother's PDA and my Ipod just aren't compatible with it. I got it to work 1 time, and it was with my laptop.

I've been using USB Modem with my Sprint Touch Pro for the last week and I'm having a major problem with it.
When uploading images via FTP, after one or two jpg files are uploaded, the upstream speed diminishes to almost nothing. It does this every time without fail.
The workaround is just disconnecting and reconnecting, but that's a pain.
Anyone else having this problem? It seems like it's some sort of switch being tripped in the phone or by Sprint when it sees that a large amount of data is being uploaded...just a guess though.

Hi,
Strange problem, I don't know if this will solve your problem.
But you should definately try a programm called "wmrouter" (google...)
This will turn your TP in a wireless router, which is really easy to use.
greetings,
Wout
have you tried the registry hacks for tethering? there's a cab if you don't want to do it yourself, but perhaps it'll fix your problem. You can do a search on here or go here for other touch pro essentials as well: http://forum.ppcgeeks.com/showthread.php?t=42730
The edits are under "internet" on there. goodluck.

he's right. that app is great and also lets you connect your cpu wirelessly. only problem is that it drains your phone faster cause it uses wifi. but you won't have disconnections... you could try the registry hacks thread on that link i gave you first and if that doesn't work you should pay for wifi router or pdanet.
hey if you resolve this issue please update us on how u did it.. thanks
Wow, thanks for the help guys. Problem solved.
First off, USB Modem simply doesn't work right on the Touch Pro, so I'm uninstalling it. With the pre-installed Internet Sharing software, there's no need for USB Modem anyway and it cuts out the old step of having to dial #777 to connect.
Thanks for the suggestion Unflushablelog. I downloaded and installed the Internet Sharing tethering hack cab file, fired up Internet sharing and blam, full Rev A speed and no diminished upload speed and best of all, no #777 dial up. Awesome. Better solution than I could have hoped for.
As for WMWifiRouter, I'm sure that would work too but I prefer the USB tether.

i think only the phone as a modem add on to the plan covers tethering... but that's why people use that registry fix... to make sure it uses the sprint line (which is what simply everything uses - regular unlimited data). we should be getting billed for it, but we don't. just try not to spend a lot of time tethering and you'll be fine (basically you don't want to raise any flags by having abnormal data charges on your account cause then sprint might look into it)... people have been doing this for years and that's always their recommendation.. i've never heard anyone say don't do it. it's something that sprint tries to capitalize on by selling an unnecessary extra when it should be free, whether you have the simply everything plan or just the regular power vision with internet
Unflushable could you provide some more info about this reg fix please?

Hey all... just picked up the Touch Pro the other day and was a little disheartened to see that the tethering functions can be a little troublesome.
In the past, I've used USBModem on a Treo 700p and it worked beautifully via BlueTooth with my Nokia N800. I typically don't use the devices with a laptop/desktop, as it is most often something I'll make use of when I'm out... otherwise, the standard PDANet solutions would be fine.
Soooo... questions are: have their been any solutions figured out by others who may be using a Nokia N800/N810 to tether to, or is the only current option to use the WMWifiRouter software? Even using the registry changes mentioned in other threads, I have had no luck having the Nokia find the Touch Pro - well... it does, but it sees it as being a GSM device, which I haven't figured out either. If the WMWiFiRouter is the only real option, is it known if that software takes any steps to "mask usage" or will I be dealing with Sprint wanting me to get the "phone as modem" package - additionally, if that would be a problem, could the registry modifications help with that?
Any info provided is greatly appreciated. It's the only thing that keeps it from mopping the floor with my previous machine!
//edit: I failed to mention that I am with Sprint, and the USBModem site clearly states that it does not work via BlueTooth with the Sprint service - I don't know if I've done the registry edit and tried USBModem (I don't believe so, but I've tried a fair number of combos and off the wall ideas so far, so I dunno!)
As far as I can tell, the WMWifiRouter does not let Sprint know that you are tethering since in the technical sense of the word, you are not. Pulling the 3G signal down and broadcasting it as wifi is not tethering. Just try not to use gigabytes of bandwidth every month and you should be fine.
Also, WMWifiRouter is the only solution I've found for my Touch Pro (also on Sprint) that actually works. My tethering hacks always failed after 30 seconds or so, and there seemed to be no other solutions out there besides this piece of software.
You make a good point in that it's not tethering in the sense of the word. I suppose I could also rephrase the question to ask if they can spot the activity and, if so, how easily, but it may be beating a dead horse. I did find it to be a reasonable solution outside of it being a bit of a battery drain. I don't use such functions very often at all, and as such have never brought attention to any minor tethering I've done in the past. Hopefully it will stay that way and I won't see a whack of charges on my bill. Cheers!

How often are you "Tethering" anyway? I honestly don't have any problems using my phone as a modem with the reg edits to modify the connection from "ForceConnection" to "Sprint PCS" and it works great.
I'm not a dedicated "Tetherer" and use it occasionally but have never seen any problems using the Internet Sharing app and the reg edit.
I use it very rarely (at least I think I do)... maybe once or twice every couple of weeks, and I don't use it to download things from the web and whatnot. Typically, I'll access a few sites and that's about it - very limited.
The only problem I ran into with the reg edits was that my Nokia N800 wasn't picking it up via Bluetooth. Using this method, I can just connect to the wireless broadcast.
Hmm, well I usually use the USB cord with mine but I did us the BT DUN on to tether using a MAC and it worked just fine.

i invested in PDAnet back when i got my Moto q and have never been happier. I get great speeds. download at 300kb/s at times. Their newest version includes options for WiFi setup as well. Definately worth the money IMO.

Would you be willing to do a test with PDANet and the ICS program on our phones?
I'd like to see a comparison of DL speeds fron the same location of PDANet vs. ICS. I have the ICS cab if you are not running it right now if you like.
PDANet would work fine if I were to tether to a desktop or laptop. Problem is, I am almost never in a situation where I need such a thing. If I use it, it's via bluetooth with my Nokia N800 (since it does not support USB hosting of such devices as 'USB modems'). Bluetooth connectivity with both PDANet and USBModem is nil, with USBModem saying that it won't work with Sprint on their page.
I have found that the latest version of WMWiFiRouter (version 1.25 as of writing) works beautifully and I get reasonably speeds with it... since it's an ad-hoc wifi access point, the Nokia likes it. Problem seems to be solved and very reasonable.
Is there free wired tethering available for this phone?
is there a free supported app?
The computer im using doesn't have a wireless network card( it's an old computer).
and im wondering if there is a way i can get my phone to be its internet until i get a card.
I want to turn it into a FTP server.
Any help that helps, THANKS
Relative to the wireless part. I have a couple of these that I got just for this type of purpose.
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0037G2BMY
Cheap, FAST and very handy to have around in the case someone brings over a computer without wireless access.
As for using your phone for the internet, that works good for browsing etc... but you will have a hard time getting your phone to provide services like service (FTP) since the IP is NAT'd....

the router isn't that far away, but it's a floor above so it will be going through at least 1 wall...
and thanks ill look into that
would

work? ill try it out in a bit but was just wondering if someone has tried before...
Edit: that links app does NOT work for the leaked ics kernel
I thought you could just plug the phone into the usb and select internet???

THANKS SO MUCH!
Glad to hear PDAnet works. I tried the Wired Tether on the Google Projects page with no luck on CleanROM 1.7.5 or CleanROM 4.2.2.
Seems to be a kernel issue I think the one from Google will work when we get aosp or cm working. Maybe the ics official release will let it work on sense roms. The PDA net app works fine currently.
I use ClockWorkMod Tether. Love it.

So, I'm moving. And my PC doesn't have a WiFi card in it for the time being. Ethernet is out of the question.
I have an unlimited Verizon 4g plan... but I heard they don't let you tether for free anymore over their network with unlimited. (I can use WiFi root tether, but that's beside the point.)
I've tried using the Settings => Usb Tethering option, but stock sense doesn't let you tether without a 4g connection enabled.
Any ideas? (Preferably something without dumb limitations, like no https etc, but beggars can't be choosers.)
Thanks!

Definitely works and will do the trick for now. Thanks man.
The free version kind of blows... I go through the allotted data in like a minute.
Do you notice pretty low speeds, or connection drops when the phone goes to sleep? Do you know if I need to keep it always screen on or something? Or is this the level 2 screening?
Wish there was a way to do this natively without having to do all this, but will work in a pinch. Thanks!
it works by using a advanced proxy type thing( its complicated) but i notice no difference with it on level 2 and none and witht he phone off i do have a fox fi key though since i use it for work a lot. with the free version i did notice it was slower but i had that version so long ago they had it where it was unlimited but only 180KB/s so it was slow regardless, this was a OG droid so long time ago. its still cheaper than getting hard line lol and an one time only payment, i used to have issues on windows 8 but their newest pdanet client for desktop fixed those. i get around 20mbps in the field generally when working.
hope this helps explain some things.

Thanks bud, yeah it helps. I'll probably end up buying it eventually... WiFi Tether [Root] works fine for WiFi, but for some reason FoxFi scares me. I feel verizon will strip my unlimited away from me while using FoxFi. Not sure why I feel safer using the WiFi root tether app though.
they should be able to tell your tethering with a normal non proxied app. In reality though they can allways tell if they cared but unless your use more than like 6 GB idk they would care if your plan is expensive enough lol.
Yeah, I wish there was another way than pdanet to do it. Wish there was a way to tell if the speeds are just my phone or the free pdanet version.
how low are the speeds on speedtest.net on pc vs on the app on the phone, mine are almost same.
I was.... "Testing" the download speeds through pdanet. Its about 1000Kbs slower through pdanet.
