[Q] daily Automatic reboot - Why ? - HD2 Windows Mobile 6.5 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

My HD2 is rebooting daily at 11:30.
I do not know why. Can this be configured somehow ?
Is there a kind of scheduled task ?
I do not have any idea.

It could be configured but I cant see how you could have set it to do that and not remember......
is it always at 11.30?
check all settings in any scheduling type apps you might have installed....

yes, always at 11:30.
I even do not have an idea, what application can be configured to restart ever day at 11:30.

Is your HD2 brought second hand/a pass down? There's surely an app initiating a scheduled reset such as AutoReset. Check your apps in the Start Menu/Remove programs for an app that performs scheduled resets! If in doubt, check your \windows\startup folder!

have you installed and tinkered with CHT Scheduler?

The HD2 is a new one, with Vodafone branding.
Check the autostart folder, did not see anything special.

could be, but deinstalled it. How can I validate that ?
Somewhere in the registry ?

Believe I found it.
Exported the registry and searched for the string 11:30.
Found a Schedule below services call dald. Not sure what that means.
Deleted the schedule, will see what happens tomorrow.
BTW, did a Hardware reset, and did not put in any time like 11:30 (the entry survived).

How to mess up you mem mngmnt...then get it back

Here's a neat trick that completely hoses your memory management. Hopefully somebody can tell me why. If you have other directories in Start Menu, you can only run one program at a time.....??????!!!!!!!!!!!!
I use Quickmenu, and like to set up my windows startup folders like so:
Programs
Media
Utilities
Office Apps
Settings
This allows me to be just a couple clicks from everything.
I recently flashed DCD's latest and LOVED all the extra memory to play with. I could just see myself driving down the road, listening to S2P, following my progress in Google Maps, switching over to check scores on the browser then answer a text....
AND I COULD! when I first loaded the ROM, I didn't have time to make my normal changes to the windows startup and went to work doing just what I illustrated.
Then when I got home, I sat down to set the folders up.
next day on the way to work...I had my music pumpin and opened up Google to check traffic....the music stopped....I lost S2P.
in fact...I could only run one app at once....seriously...if I was browsing this forum and tried to answer a text message, the browser would get dumped....
I couldn't figure it out....I started uninstalling, stuff left and right...but nothing helped. Then I moved my folders out of Start Menu and dropped them under Program Files
Program Files
-----Media
-----Office Apps
-----Utilites
Settings
Low and behold...I could run more than one program again...
SOMEBODY TELL WHAT THE HELL IS GOING ON! ;-P
I haven't set up subfolders in Quickmenu for several ROMS now, but...
just guessing, what do you have your "ok" button set for in the Quickmenu options, or for that matter the "x-button" setting? I would play around with those settings. Maybe if the setting is a certain way, scolling and selecting an additional app through the menu structure also simultaneously closes the one thats active?

Thank you for the reply....If what you are suggesting is true, then I wouldn't matter how my folders were set up....the mere fact that I'm using QuickMenu is somehow closing the current app because of settings.
1. My settings do not change based on folder setup
2. Only when I have more than Programs and Settings in Start Menu do I have the problem.
I'm tellin' ya...there's something funky going on.

Google Sync

OK, so I am syncing my Hero with all my Google stuff and it uses push to do so.
I was wondering how I switch that off and select a sync interval (a bit more like activesync) and if that might have a positive effect on battery life.
Thanks
There's an app for that!!
Only got my Hero a couple of days ago, but I think that application you want is Locale.
It has a plugin for sync and another for SMS.
You can do some pretty cool stuff with it.
I currently have it set to disable syncing between 23:00 and 07:00 if my GPS position is at my house. That way if I'm still out on the razz I'll get messages and updates.
Just make sure you setup the default to do the reverse of whatever you setup otherwise it might not start syncing again.
Hope that helps.
Rob
I will have a look into that thanks.
A quick look suggests it might actually be much more than I need though!
check in settings > data synchronisation > google
there you can set it on or off, but you would need an app from the market to set intervals.
You might find settings like that in Settings - Data Synchronisation
Remember the Menu button is ever changing, so check what options it gives in each selection - I've found lots of stuff hiding that way...

You can get extra options on many things by tapping an holding on items as well. That is always worth a try!

HTC Hero trouble synchronizing with PC? Read this...

Hi Heroes
Did you ever have trouble syncing your Hero with your PC? No connection with HTC sync? Only usb connection and access to the SD card? Maybe you got no connection at all? HTC sync couldn't find the driver... Or you actually used to be able to sync, but you can't anymore?
Well, I know how annoying this can be There are a few things you might wanna try. They worked for me...
a) Get HTC sync and install the drivers.
Windows 7 users (like me) will get an additional challenge, but it is doable IF you read this this thread (entirely!)
Remember the HTC Hero sync tab in the notification area trick (mentioned by #19 Magnus in the above thread).
Also remember #7 Daniel Kruschinski comment on restarting the phone.
b) Now, why create my own topic if every answer can be found in this thread? Simple: I DON'T WANT TO RESTART MY PHONE EACH TIME I HAVE TO SYNC!
Question:
Sync works after phone restart (if drivers are installed properly), but stops working after a while... why?Answer:
Because the HTC sync app (called "PC synchronization" or similar) ON THE PHONE stopped working.Question:
Why did the application stop working?Answer:
Because a) it shut down on its own (bug or whatever), or because b) you killed it with a app like Advanced Task Killer (ATK) in order to try to free some memory because your phone was being sluggish...Question:
Why not simply restart that app by going to "Menu" - "Settings" - "Synchronization" - "Sync with PC", since this IS the app?Answer:
...because it doesn't work! You can restart the app after it died, and it will show on ATK, but the syncing WILL NOT work. Weird, but that's the way it is...Question:
So what do I do?Answer:
Don't kill it! Oh, and by the way, if you use ATK, unchecking HTC sync in the program WILL NOT BE GOOD ENOUGH!: ATK will still kill it (!).
You HAVE TO add it to the "Ignore List" in ATK in order to keep it running (long press on the app in the list, then choose "ignore"). Strange, but true... This only applies to HTC sync, as far as I can tell. Don't ask...
A few more things, while we're at it:
- If the events of the calendar OF THE PHONE don't transfer to your Outlook calendar or your Google calendar , read this thread to know why (jr2408 's post).
why, WHY did they do that? Why can't you merge the calendars? Why can't you change the event's calendars after having entered them? At least, the phone remembers your calendar event settings... Uff!
- Here are a few apps you might want to install. They are free, and they are really usefull:
Advanced Task Killer free:
Allows to free memory by shutting down unused background apps. Removes sluggishness - awesome! Remember to use the ignore list for apps like HTC sync and TouchFLO
Quick Uninstaller:
Makes uninstalling apps a one-click operation. Cool!
Y5 - Battery saver:
Fantastic! Turns off the phone's wifi when you're not close to your (or a chosen) Access point. Remembers location by GPS tracking and thus saves you A LOT of battery energy. Try it, really...
3G Watchdog:
Keeps you informed of your Data connection rate (on 3G network, not wifi) and warns you when you reach a certain value. Very useful for those who don't have free unlimited transfer...
aTrackDog:
Keeps your software updated, even if it doesn't come from Android Market.
ASTRO:
An explorer which lets you manage your files.
Barcode Scanner:
Obvious...
Shazam:
Recognizes songs by listening and finds info on the Web. Impressive!
Wifi Analyzer:
Helps you spot the most appropriate Access point if several are in the area...
Sky map:
Helps you identify stars in the sky. Powerful!
AND:
Robo Defense (addictive!); Mario Simulator (laughing guaranteed); OI Flashlight (a "where is the #@! keyhole"-killer); Metal detector (eat that, I-phone braggers!)
If you got cash, don't forget CoPilot for GPS navigation, which allows to DOWNLOAD entire maps and store them on your SD card.
Et voilà! Comments welcome, recommended apps, advices... You tell me!
Questions are welcome, but answers are even more. Share!
Very useful post
very nice thanks!!!!!
My Hero doesnt detect the HTC sync on my Vista. I have never been able to sync with PC. I dont want to sync with PC as sync everything with google. But I need to sync with HTC sync for ROM upgrade. I have tried everything. I tried disablling the antivirus and firewall, put the program on teh Firewall exception list but nothing happnes. says that phone cannot detect HTC sync on computer. I hav downloaded the latest HTC sync from the HTC site. Any suggestions?
Hi all,
This is a little hello from me to you all. Like you all I've had problems with HTC Sync, unable to connect my HTC Hero, which I've only had for three weeks, but it seemly like a long time due to the problems I've had with HTC Sync and time I spend getting it to work with Outlook...
Anyway, I've read a lot of information here and externally i.e. google.com searches. I'm glad to say I've managed to HTC Sync to work..
This is what I did....Oh! I have a Windows Vista Ultimate 32bit, I GUESS this might work with any other installation of Windows, but not sure about Windows 7. If this works, please post here so people have one place to go to find the answer.... cheers.... and good luck!
1) Downloaded Andriod SDK, this was to allow debug USB connection. You can find it here.. http://dl.google.com/android/android-sdk_r05-windows.zip
2) Downloaded HTC sync version 2.0.33 (http://www.htc.com/www/SupportDownload.aspx?p_id=283&cat=3&dl_id=933)
3) As I use my Ipod to sync music, I found Apple also installed Mobile device software, I uninstalled this.
4) Reviewed all software that related to USB and mobile devices and there were a few.... including my trusty HTC Diamond..., UN-installed them all...
5) Rebooted my laptop.
6) Installed SDK to C:\ASDK, then set-up Environment Variable to point to ;C:\ASDK\android-sdk-windows\tools, this is thanks to someone who posted this information on the web...sorry I can't find the reference, but here is my Kudos to you!
I rebooted my laptop...
7) I then installaed HTC Sync, but prior to the install, I stopped Anti-virus software (AVG), disabled my firewall.
8) Did another reboot.
9) Once my laptop was up and running.. ensured my firewall was disabled and disabled AVG, connected my Hero (baby) noticed Windows installed the USB drivers
10) Once the installed was completed, HTC Sync, did not see the phone, now I was pretty pissed at this point, however I wasn't going to give...
11) Whilst my phone was still connected, I decided to power it off and left it off for about 20 seconds.
12) Powered my Hero back on... and then that was it.... Windows found the phone not just USB, HTC Sync, noticed the Hero was connected and started the installation of the drivers, this took a bit of time... do be cool and wait...
12) HTC Sycn, status, conected baby, yeah!....
I setup what I wanted to sych, Contacts, calendar etc. and clicked on sync on the PC....
And it was great seeing this happen....
I hope this bit of information help someONE or someTWO at least... I know how much time I spent on this and if I can help save someONE or TWO save sometime - WoW It make me feel goooood....
Please post if it helps or if it don't...
Cheers and good luck to all
Right click "START". i was having troubles for hours even after all this reading get fed up. Press right click to delete HTC SYNC seen "START" and it went str8 to installation. let tha root begin!!

I am trying to use your method... but I don't quite grasp the meaning of point 6 (sorry for being such a noob, but I am at point of tears as I bough the Hero a few days ago as my first smartphone and now everything that can go wrong during freeing it into better phone, is going just wrooong).
So were do I set this C:\ASDK\android-sdk-windows\tools at? my PC? My SD card? How exactly I do it?
Thanks people for all the post, really... just at the beginning is quite overwhelming

Thanks for the post.
I have a question for you guys that it is bugging me... why do you need sync? i've never used it so i don't get its purpose.
Thanks!

To be honest I don't know, but apparently it's necessary for installing ROM (following the steps from THE guide). I want to make sure it's working so that I won't get stuck with this problem in the middle of ROMing...
but later today I found my software is not up to date, but for some reason my phone errors with the phone+red triangle screen on, so I cannot update, without it I cannot properly root (even though the Universal Androot says it's rooted), and can't do anything. I am stuck at the moment, and plan to visit some store that claims they can do it for me... I feel disappointed and angry.:crying:

Any way to stop Android from closing programs on its own?

Hey there all, this is 2 Bunny again. As many of you know, back in October I had to make an emergency switch from Windows Mobile to Android. As you've all read in my posts, it has been a very "mixed" experience with both some impressive and downright pathetic discoveries, but one of the worst things about it (beside the complete inability to sync) is the way that Android closes your programs whenever it feels like it instead of letting you close them. Sometimes I'll be browsing the internet in Opera Mobile and I'll switch over to the email program briefly to check something, when I hold down the "home" key and pick OM from the list of recently used programs, it starts it all over again, and I know for a fact I didn't choose "exit".
Sometimes I'm glad Android "cleans up" (like if I back out of a program that has no "exit" option) because it saves me the trip to the task manager later, but is there any way I can prevent it from closing stuff I'm actually still using?
Thanks.

Update - well it seemed promising, but it didn't work unfortunately. ZDbox said it was "protected", but that didn't stop Android's hammer of making people's lives miserable.
Any ideas if I might be doing something wrong in ZDBox (I did turn off the notification thing) or if there is other software I might be able to try?
Thanks.

If rooted try V6 supercharger script. Just do a search on XDA. It rewrites your phones memory management to increase multitasking capabilities by reconfiguring your ram. If not rooted, your choices are severely limited by existing software to hardware configurations preset by the android operating system and the device manufacturer. Go through all of your programs and clear out all of your allocated cache memory. Freeing up ram memory may help your multitasking needs.

As mentioned by others, the most likely culprit is high memory utilization. However, there are a few other reasons that may contribute to the application closing down. Android "ranks" applications from 1 to 5 (where 5 means it is the first to get killed) based on certain criteria. Because xda won't let me link to it (I'm a new user), I have posted them at the bottom of my message.
Chances are, you are seeing the behavior in numbers 4 and 5. The fact that Android keeps applications in a least-recently-used list means that if you have applications which you just accessed but appear to have closed when you come back to them, then, once again, it is likely you are using a lot of memory that the phone is aggressively trying to keep cleaned up.
Although, it is possible that a small number of your problems are based on poorly implemented applications since the developer website states "If an activity implements its lifecycle methods correctly, and saves its current state, killing its process will not have a visible effect on the user experience..."
1. Foreground process
A process that is required for what the user is currently doing. A process is considered to be in the foreground if any of the following conditions are true:
It hosts an Activity that the user is interacting with (the Activity's onResume() method has been called).
It hosts a Service that's bound to the activity that the user is interacting with.
It hosts a Service that's running "in the foreground"—the service has called startForeground().
It hosts a Service that's executing one of its lifecycle callbacks (onCreate(), onStart(), or onDestroy()).
It hosts a BroadcastReceiver that's executing its onReceive() method.
Generally, only a few foreground processes exist at any given time. They are killed only as a last resort—if memory is so low that they cannot all continue to run. Generally, at that point, the device has reached a memory paging state, so killing some foreground processes is required to keep the user interface responsive.
2. Visible process
A process that doesn't have any foreground components, but still can affect what the user sees on screen. A process is considered to be visible if either of the following conditions are true:
It hosts an Activity that is not in the foreground, but is still visible to the user (its onPause() method has been called). This might occur, for example, if the foreground activity started a dialog, which allows the previous activity to be seen behind it.
It hosts a Service that's bound to a visible (or foreground) activity.
A visible process is considered extremely important and will not be killed unless doing so is required to keep all foreground processes running.
3. Service process
A process that is running a service that has been started with the startService() method and does not fall into either of the two higher categories. Although service processes are not directly tied to anything the user sees, they are generally doing things that the user cares about (such as playing music in the background or downloading data on the network), so the system keeps them running unless there's not enough memory to retain them along with all foreground and visible processes.
4. Background process
A process holding an activity that's not currently visible to the user (the activity's onStop() method has been called). These processes have no direct impact on the user experience, and the system can kill them at any time to reclaim memory for a foreground, visible, or service process. Usually there are many background processes running, so they are kept in an LRU (least recently used) list to ensure that the process with the activity that was most recently seen by the user is the last to be killed. If an activity implements its lifecycle methods correctly, and saves its current state, killing its process will not have a visible effect on the user experience, because when the user navigates back to the activity, the activity restores all of its visible state. See the Activities document for information about saving and restoring state.
5. Empty process
A process that doesn't hold any active application components. The only reason to keep this kind of process alive is for caching purposes, to improve startup time the next time a component needs to run in it. The system often kills these processes in order to balance overall system resources between process caches and the underlying kernel caches.

That sounds promising. I'll give it a try and letcha'all know if it works or not.
Just FYI, the installation is a HUGE pain. I messed around with it for a solid hour and a half, maybe two hours to get it up and running, so it better work or I'm out the time I put in and I'd have anotherwise useless something running/taking up space.
Thanks.

Looks like I wasted my time. Not only did that not have any effect, it seems to have permanently brought back the useless update nagscreen - a million thumbs down to "supercharger" for being the most useless waste of an hour and a half of my life.
Not to be mean here, but did anyone try the suggestions before posting them?
Guess I'm off to the recovery menu again to try and get rid of the nagscreen, that is if I'm not booted out first.

Yes.
Install V6 Supercharger and bulletproof Opera Mobile/Mini.
Are you sure you had it installed and it was running actually?
Your kernel needs to support init.d scripts.
If not, prior to installing V6 create init.d folder in /system/etc/ and grant it all the permissions. Download Script Manager app and set V6 scripts from init.d folder to run at boot.
I hope it works.
Simple Workaround:
Download MinFreeManager app and tweak your min free settings according to your RAM. More RAM = More Agressive Settings. Google android minfree and you'll find how to.

I'll tell you what, I screwed around with that "supercharger" for so long, I really don't want to look at it again (I think my ROM might actually have it included). All I know is that it did install because when I restarted the device, I got the stupid update nagscreen back.
I am going to try that "MinFree" program though and report back what I figure out. So far it seems to be working, so this could be promising, but I'll keep ya'all posted.

Actually, the home key leaves it running. I usually check right away, and at first it continues running; it's when you're not watching that it takes it right out from under you. It might just be this build of Android.
Is anyone else running Gingerbread and having this problem?
Does anyone know of any kind of solution?

[Q] Deactivation of device administrator fails (Lotus Notes Traveler + HTC One X)

Hello all,
after receiving the recent update for my HTC One X (stock ROM, now Sense 5.0 and Android 4.2.2), the Notes Traveler app for my work e-mails is causing problems (it seems to lose account information regularly and notifies me of failed sync). Since it is about to be replaced soon anyway, I wanted to uninstall the app, which is not possible:
I tried to deactivate the device administrator for Lotus Notes in the system security settings. The checkbox remains checked after deactivation, although there was no error message.
After that, I tried to uninstall the app using the app management in system settings. However, the button for uninstalling is still deactivated.
When I go to device admins again and tap Lotus Notes in the list, it asks me if I want to activate it as administrator again. So here it seems as if it was removed from the admins, although the checkbox in the list is always checked.
The same happens when I start Notes Traveler while Lotus Notes is seemingly not an activated administrator. I can then re-enter my password and the sync works for a while (less than 1 day) before it loses the password again and re-entering won't fix the problem unless I try removing Lotus Notes from the device admins (which causes all Traveler data to be wiped).
So it seems that the removal of Lotus Notes from device administrators does not work properly. Although I am asked for reactivation when I start the app again, the administrator is still active somewhere in the system and prevents uninstallation of the app.
Did anyone have a similar problem with device administration? Can I get rid of Notes Traveler without wiping my phone or damaging anything on it?
I already asked HTC support but they only wrote that the system update often cannot be extracted completely and the only way to fix it was to wipe the phone. However, I never received any error message during or after the update and everything else is working perfectly well. Therefore I doubt that it is caused by a failed system update installation.
Hm, did nobody else have this problem so far? Or anything similar? No one with enough knowledge of the Android system who can tell me if there's any other way than the official to get rid of that thing?

Suspect the majority of users here have never used Lotus Notes or even know of it, and for that they're very lucky and should grateful
http://www.ihatelotusnotes.com
I installed LN Traveler on CM 9 and promptly removed it once I knew it wanted Device Admin permissions: A gross intrusion of privacy and control. Instead I bought and installed Touchdown by Nitro. I knew this won't help you out, but I thought your post required some acknowledgment.
Thanks for answering. I don't like Notes very much either. I already did a factory reset of my HOX to remove that thing, it was not as much work to restore everything as I thought. However, some settings (e.g. ringtones) were not restored by HTC Backup which was a little annoying but okay.
i am also having the same problem with my micromax canvas 2 pus a110q
