Google voice for the nookcolor will access your voicemail and send/recieve text messages. The only problem is I can't get notifications to agree to pop up all the time. Otherwise it works great.
When installing there will be an option to select your google voice email address instead of your phone number. Select the email address, not your phone number and enjoy!
Thanks for this. Just installed but never got the option for the email. It thinks the nook is my cell phone. Its using that number.

Got it installed, but my keyboard is only showing the top half of itself.... odd.
The app on the nook is kinda useless. It doesn't have a contact function or dialer - you would better served with an email client or a contact app that allowed for more than just an email field.

I saw the same thing where I see only half the keyboard. It will nice having a app that allows me to SMS text from this device, if this keyboard thing is fixed.

Email field? What are you talking about? You can use this app for checking your voicemail and texting.
Also for the others for the half keyboard do you just mean only the alphabet popping up right?
Just switch the keyboard you are using.
Thanks, installed perfectly. Then I grabbed the updated version from my phone and it updated the Nook's app, works great except I've got the same issue with only 2 rows showing up for the keyboard. I also see that in Transdroid when entering label names. I'm working on installing a new keyboard now.
I'm running on nookie froyo and have and issue with Google Voice where it fails to download my voicemails? Anybody seen a solution to this?
I'm using Thumb keyboard and it shows the whole keyboard

How do I get the apk to install? It says unable to install apk.
I just installed from the market...works perfect(sans call making of course).

What is the preferred method of installing this apk? I've tried downloading directly from the nook, but it won't install. I've tried using the computer and an SD card and used Root explorer but it wouldn't install. I also tried moving it into the system/apps and it still didn't install. Not sure what else to do.
I don't think I had any problems with GV on my autonootered Nook. Although I've only listened to a couple received voice mails, and haven't used it for TXT messages. Got the unlimited plan on the phone, so why bother using GV for it?
Woohoo thanks a lot.
Installed it as a normal app using adb and it installs and can send receive texts.
Default keyboard works great.
Surprisingly it overrode my up-to-date gvoice from the market without complaining about any signature mismatch.
Please post how you did this so it will live on for future versions.
update: earlier my wifi was flaky
For those that are not so great with adb, I got it working by dropboxing the 3 Google voice files I had in titanium back up on my phone, downloading it on my nook with dropbox app, and then moved the three files to my titanium back up folder on the SD card in my nook. Open titanium back up, restore Google voice App+data and voila Google voice on your nook.
I got it working. I installed the apk on a SD card from my computer. I moved it from the card into system/apps using root explorer. It did not register or install, but I THEN went to the market and installed it from the market.
After downloading from the market, it enabled me to use it. No clue why. Before when trying from the market it would say it couldn't complete installation because it was trying to register the number of the phone. Weird. Maybe the apk in the system/apps did something to the download? I don't know, but it works now so I can reply to texts on my nook or my phone.
As for the unlimited plan, I'm not paying 15 more to VZW to have this, when GV gives it for free.
Sorry to kind of resurrect an old thread - but I was also working with gvoice on my CM7 Nook Color and while it installed fine from the Market, I can listen to voicemails (it saves them as MP3s) and send texts back and forth, I cannot figure a way to make calls over WiFi from the gvoice number. That's kind of key - if I can make the non-cellular calls like I could from my computer.
Of course, successfully pairing a bluetooth headset comes first, but I like looking long-term.
Thanks!

You can't, because Google Voice is not a VoIP client. At least not yet. Even on phones if you make a "Call with Google Voice", it still goes over your carrier's voice service, not data.

Hi everybody,
does anybody know if it is possible to install a SMS client on the GT 10.1v? Being it a 3G Tablet it should be possible to activate the SMS messaging ... I had been using the same SIM-card in a Samsung Netbook where it was possible to write text messages. The tab didn't let me install GO SMS.
Thanks!
I've installed WhatsApp and it want to send a SMS message before it starts. When I enter a correct phonenumber, WhatsApp presents an error telling me that it's not possible to send an SMS.
It appears the current firmware doesn't support SMS/Phone operations. Perhaps a custom rom in the near future will solve this problem.
I've tried to use Go SMS & Go Dialer, but without any luck.

using dropbox seems like a poor way of doing it..
I just started on one myself that does it through bluetooth
that's also not a perfect way of doing it but it seems better than dropbox to me
then again, I have no idea if it will work through bluetooth. I literally just started on it yesterday so I basically have zero functionality so far.
I just saw that HTC Flyer on Android 2.4 does have an SMS App working. Couldn't we just rip the app of the Flyer and install on the GT?

Sorry if I am being dumb - you got GoSMS working on a 10.1V? How comes? I have in the meantime only managed to get it installed. But - as predicted - it would not send any SMS.
I can send SMS using the messaging function in the message app.
textab is the best sms app out there in my opinion. unless your trying have a set number to the tab and text from it.
Sign up for a Google Voice number for free. ( google.com/voice ) Make sure you go through the settings and don't have it forward texted to your current cell phone number but just to the email address used to sign up.
Use the Google Voice App from the market or the one already preinstalled on the Tab. Log in using your Google Voice account and start texting using your new Google Voice phone number to any cell phone number.
DeskSMS is the ONLY way to go for SMS from a tablet, desktop, or web interface. Doesn't require an active bluetooth connection or Dropbox. It just forwards all my SMS to my Google Talk account, and I can reply directly within Google Talk on my Tablet or Trillian on my PC.
Google voice now supports tablets. I use it all the time to text from the tab.

You can text using google voice. You just have to create an account. You won't be able to use your phone number unless you're on sprint (or you want to pay your carrier to allow it). But if you don't mind having a new phone number for your nook than it shouldn't be hard.
Usb mikes work?
You were talking about texting. That shouldn't require a mic. Bluetooth mics should work (depending on your version of android). I haven't made a call from mine so I can't tell you whether that works.
I doubt USB mic would work, USB hosting has been activated through a hack but it's fairly limited and I'm not sure if Android even supports USB mics.
USB host thread
For texting from my Nook I run SyncSMS. You install on both your phone and your Nook and you can sync your SMS messages between the 2 devices as well as texting from your Nook using your phone number....make sense?

Just to clarify - I want to text. I don't need a mic. I have a google voice acct. with a google number. I want to use it for texting. All my searching tells me to use google voice with Groove IP over wifi. But I can't find the instructions to link the two together.
@cozboogie I looked at syncSMS on the market and it has really bad reviews right now. Sounds great in theory. Hope the dev will fix the app soon.

If you have Google voice, and a Google voice number, then you can text using Google Voice without any extra software. I dont know what Groove IP is, but you do not need it.
set up Google Voice with your number, and start texting.
Well, after a series of error messages, gvoice decided to complete the set up and now I am able to text. Don't know what I did, so can't pass on info for anyone else.

Groove IP is an app that allows you to make and receive phone calls through Google Voice on a data plan/WiFi...if all you are doing is texting, dload GVoice and use that...nothing else is needed.
Groove IP always crashes my nook when I use it for phone calls. When you end the call, the screen freezes and you have to reboot! And as the person above me said, you can text using the Google voice app itself.
How does one do this?
Shouldn't you be able to do that by default? I mean you have the 3G one and Messaging works fine for me
No messaging app
There are a few messaging apps in the market (sorry, on Google Play...) that do this, but I think they assign an arbitrary phone number. I tried one but found it much easier to just pull my phone out of my pocket and use that.
Edit: I just checked, and you can download Verizon Messages from Play, which looks like it would work.
Edit again: Verizon Messages has to be paired with a Verizon smart phone or something to get it to work? I gave up...

Try GoSMS. Your tablet HAS a phone number, otherwise you wouldn't have data.
No dice . . Go SMS doesn't show up on Play as compatible with the SCH-i905. Besides, the tab may have a phone number but it doesn't have a texting plan.
Use this Chrome extension and tutorial to grab the APK from your computer: http://codekiem.com/2012/02/24/apk-downloader/
Otherwise head to 4shared or some other site to hunt down the APK.
I just happened to be going through the AT&T bloatware and happened upon this app - I decided to see what it was all about, and lo and behold, it's actually useful!
It puts your SMS, voicemails, and call log in the same stream. It also puts them in the cloud, and gives you a Speech-to-Text transcription of your voicemails, which is nice.
I have some minor complaints, but overall I enjoy using it. I have a few concerns about AT&T having all my texts on a website somewhere but it's a great way to have them all already backed up if you lose your phone, etc.
You can even send SMS from the website.
So, are you using it? Do you prefer another app for these things?
I was using it the first week of ownership. It's not bad but I quit because people would text me photos and they would only show up tiny?
Went with the gosms pro app...works great.

I like the VV to Text and the "cloud" functionality... I only want it gone b/c it takes over notifications and I'd like to use the BLN functionality of Da_G's OC Kernel... BLN doesn't work with AT&T Messages (yet).
@n00b1269, VV to Text (Which is what AT&T Messages does) is different than regular VV. I think if you have your account changed to regular VV, then the original VV .apk will work... I think.

your going to have to call or chat with AT&T to have them reprovison your account in order to use the VVM app thats posted here in the forum i had used the messages app first then it screwed my account somehow not letting the VVM app validate if you look at that other thread i posted there
that sound like google voice only GV is 1000% better!
I used it for awhile, but the vlingo in car mode won't read text messages from it. So I switched back to handcent for text, and YouMail for vvm. Works great, and I love the new plugin for YouMail, called who are you, that gives true caller id for all calls.

Yes. I like att messaging a lot. Its simple and clean. I like the ui better than GV. For my use it has more functionality than GV except for the option to leave different voicemail greeting for different callers.
GV gives free texting but I have the $30 unlimited m to m and texting so no advantage there. Also I don't think GV support mms unless that's changed.
Only problem I can't get SMS popup app to work with it. I'm using Popup app instead and it works okay.

I am using VVM on my stock GNOTE.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1452330
DL it to your pc and email it to your Gmail acct that is on your Note. Then check the box under apps that allows you to install from Non-Market places. (Unknown sources) Under settings-applications-Unknown sources.
PLEASE NOTE
if you have already set up AT&T Messages, you will need to uninstall it and either call AT&T from another phone or log into your online att.com acct and do the support chat. They will have to remove Voice Mail and the feature AT&T Messages. They will then have to provision/apply Visual Voicemail back on.
It works great and I am stoked to have it back on my phone. I just had the Galaxy S2 Skyrocket and VVM was on there. Loved it. Anyway, hope this helps.

It did that to me to but I did the support chat and had them remove AT&T Messages feature and Voice Mail. I then powered my phone off and on, they added Visual Voicemail back on, powered off and on again and it worked.
The AT&T Messages feature is what is causing the issue.
I'm using it right now for VVM and it seems to be the only way to receive iMessages (Former iPhone User) in group form. If I try and get the messages from the stock app, I cant reply all... Anyone know of any other messaging apps that can receive and send messages in a group sms/mms fashion?

I know GO SMS Pro supports group messaging, but I'm having an issue with people receiving double and triple messages from me while using that.
EDIT: You can't receive iMessages. iOS and OS X only, for now.
The ATT Messages app seems to work the best for me atleast for the iMessage style group chats. Go SMS Pro always splits it up for some reason, not sure why.
question about Go SMS Pro, I installed the app and its working fine (mostly use for the msg without closing other apps) and i would like to set it to my default Messaging app. So i go into Settings>Applications>Manage Applications>Messaging>Clear Defaults but when i go to launch Messaging app it does not ask me what app i want to launch nor to set it as default.

If you launch the Messaging app, you're going to launch the Samsung Messaging app. Just like if you pressed S Memo, it's going to launch S Memo, not some other note taking app on the phone. You need to open the GO SMS Pro icon. In Edit Mode, you can drag and drop the GO SMS icon over the default Messaging icon to replace it in the TouchWiz tray.

Never used it and never realized it did all that. I thought it was like a chat thing for ATT users like 3 of my friends and me could all see each others texts like a chat room.
I've been using Google Voice for years now.
VVM
To be more specific on the issue with VVM. IF you ran the ATT Messaging app, it causes all sorts of changes in ATT's system on your account. The Tech/Rep looking at it for you will tell you all is well, and in their defence, it appears that it is correct. However, it's not and it's deep in their system and they can not control it.
To get it corrected, you have to have them COMPLETLY REMOVE YOUR DATA PLAN ( re-read that 10x.. it is EXACTLY what they have to do to get it working ). VVM is attached to your data plan. They can tinker with voice mail all day, it will do NOTHING for you. And good luck getting a rep who will actually go though the trouble of removing the data plan, especially if your on unlimited in the states still. However, if you anoy them enough, and keep them on the line long enough, they will eventually do it just to shut you up. Your best method of doing this is actually to go to the store and do it there. The reps there have permission to do it, where as the phone tech's kept having to call other departments to get it done.
After 3 days and 4-5 hours on the phone with a tech they got mine working. So I immediatly loaded the att app, it killed VVM, and I was able to drive to my local store, and they had it working again in 10 minutes ( that is 10 minutes after the guy did what i asked, complete removal of the data plan ). I did this just to prove it was a repeatable fix and not a 1x deal based on some random error.
Apologies if this is irrelevant. I don't have a i777, but I set up AT&T Messages on my i727 (Skyrocket). Didn't take more than a day to realize I hated the interface (and the fact that the app shanghais all notifications).
Unable to resolve how to turn off the notifications, on a whim I decided to just try to uninstall the app. To my amazement, it actually worked. My regular VVM went back to normal. I needed no interjection from AT&T at all.
I know this is very much a "hatchet" solution and not a "scalpel", but hopefully it's helpful all the same.
I have Sprint and an integrated google voice number. I also have a tablet I use to send/receive GVoice messages. Problem is, only the received messages will show up on my phone...any message sent through GVoice isn't there. Ps, I understand WHY, just looking for a way to get around it.
Is there any app/technique available (searched FOREVER) that will allow my phone to sync up with the sent messages from GVoice? Essentially, I want to be able to have a gvoice only conversation on the tablet and have the same conversation show up on the phone.
Thanks!
Bump. Have an app that can send GV from the native SMS system.
GV Intergration
But I cannot get GV messages received in the native message app without forwarding the text through the proper SMS phone number. I thought there was an an option for this in the GV app, but it doesn't seem to make a difference for me.
I just emailed the developer of the GV Integration app asking if he had any ideas on how to do this. Unfortunately, the Google Voice app is the only one I've found that will sync messages instantly (or at all). I SMS a *lot* from my laptop browser via google.com/voice and the Google Voice chrome plugin.. so it would suck to only see one side (incoming) of the text thread.
I'll definitely let you guys know if I find anything.
damnit google.. open up the freakin api already.
Also.. if you do use the Google Voice app.. there's an app on the market called NotifierPro that works with the Android Google Voice app to display popups of incoming text messages... which is convenient.
You can send text mesages with GVI, then have them forwarded back to your phone. That would work if you have unlimited inbound texts, but it cuts prepaid texting in half, which is nice, but could be nicer.

Well, I'm glad others have an interest in something like this too. I've been using mysms recently...it's by no means reliable and it relies on your phone to send/receive (unlike GV) but it works ok for now. Mighty text works better as far a reliability goes, but is terrible with the tablet browser, doesn't support notifications, and still relies on the phone...still not GV. I guess we'll just gave to wait.
Argh...the GV integration app ALMOST works. It might just be a matter of getting the settings right. Messages sent from a Google Voice web browser get integrated into handcent (Usually after you receive a message). I just keep running into problems with duplicate messages, not getting notifications from handcent (messages still show up), etc depending on the settings I choose between the GV/Handcent/GV Integration apps.
SO frustrating...has anyone had better luck?
Looking for a way to keep text sent from the browser and tablet synced with my phone as well. Im using Sprints GV integration as well.
I know this thread is old but for anybody that finds this post you should know that cm10.2 roms have voice+ which integrates messages sent from a computer to your phones message store
