Issue corrected: how: I opened Odin on my desktop, unplugged my USB cord from my pc, removed my battery from my phone along with my sim card and sd card: I then placed the USB into my phone (not pc yet), pressed and held the up down toggled (both ends pressed in), placed the other end of the usb into my pc, placed my battery into my phone and all this is done while still holding the up down volume toggle.. (do not press the power button at all) I was placed into download mode!!!!! I selected the pit file (s1_odin_20100512.pit), checked PDA box, clicked on PDA and added T959UVJFD.tar, pressed start, allowed odin to say pass and vibrant started to reboot: My phone cut off again after i removed the USB because the battery was really dead but i placed it on the real charger and the charging indicator actually showed I'm not booted on stock 2.1 for now.
Thanks to those who truly attempted to help me!
I also understand that there may not be a way to actually brick this device lol
PROBLEM BEFORE FIX
I'm really not a noob but I did something unusual. Coming from eugene 2.2 rom I tried to use Odin to flash back to j16 but it said E DEVBLOCK AND somehing else. However I was following some tatorial that said flash the pit file only and select repartition and allow it to work and say pass then pull the battery. Well I did that and now my phone won't come on period. Not at all like the battery is dead and won't recharge. I tried hooking it up to the pc but nothing. Not even a charge indicator. Somehow today I got a black screen to show with red letters... But it won't come back on period. Is this a true brick? Please help me out.

Wow u think I need sarcasm right now? Nope
Can you get the phone into downlode mode?
If plugging it into a charger doesn't do anything and your PC doesn't recognize your phone you might have created the first true Galaxy-S phone brick.
You do have Samsung drivers on your PC right!? And you could also try making a Jig I guess, but if your phone isn't even recognized by your PC your basically screwed. Don't pay attention to 2nd poster, he's just trying to act cool.

possible fix
how about you try taking the phone and pulling the plug and taking out the battery
after you do that odin back to stock
First you want to post in q&a. Second as to your phone does it do anything. Does the bottom row of lights come on. Does it boot to any screen? Third have you read the vibrant directory (bible)? Forth have you downloaded odin?

Check to see if your battery died somehow, but if you can't turn on your device even with a full battery, you have a real bricked phone.
Battery I fine, if I plug the charger in it doesn't charge or show that it's charging. How could this happen just from flashing a file?
Call tmobile and tell them that your phone said it was updating and once it restarted, it never came back on. They will have you check a few things and then send you a replacement for free. In the future be very careful when learning to mod your phone, ask questions when your not sure. This replacement trick will only get you a phone one time.
I was thinking to do that, only that my carrier is simple mobile, they do not offer insurance, sigh, I think I may be out of a phone
where did you get this update.zip?/
What update.zip did you flash?

No; it is unlikely that you are out of a phone. Try this method, either buying or making a USB "test jig." (You can make it if you know how to solder.)
http://board.teamwhiskey.com/viewtopic.php?f=13&t=209
If this does not work, there is another method that is expensive (but less than $500 for a new phone). You will need to find a technician with a "JTAG" test device who has a special bootloader software module from Samsung. The device uses an interface other than USB to access bootloader memory and downloads the bootloader file to the bootloader memory in order to boot the phone into a recovery environment.
The only way that your phone would be completely unrecoverable is if there was a hardware failure at the same time that you were playing around, which is unlikely.

Dude it's bricked....game over. Call tmobile and just tell them your phone doesn't turn on anymore, don't tell them how it happened, just that it stopped working. They will send you a replacement for free, if you're still under warranty it is. I bricked mine 2 weeks ago and got my replacement the next day. I tried EVERYTHING to get it back to life....but nothing. Sometimes it happens even though you follow all steps, especially if it messed around with your bootloader.
Good luck. It's no ones effen business what you say happened...most likely they do the same.
You shouldn't even be flashing the update.zip... you should be using like OCLF to do it for you. This should help:
http://androidspin.com/2010/08/09/how-to-restore-or-recover-your-samsung-vibrant/
I would STRONLGY suggest to listen what BruceElliott says, read and follow the directions carefully. In 99% cases you can recover just fine. It's very hard to truly brick vibrant...

You've got to be able to get into download mode to do that though. I think that's the problem.
I'd mess around with it for a bit and try all of the tips to get into download mode. I can't believe you'd hard brick it based on what you said. You are positive your battery is okay?
I had the same problem. It would not turn on at all. I called Samsung and they paid to send it back for warrenty repair. It takes 6 business days. They didn't even ask how it happened. I think the number was 800-samsung
Nah, you don't need a Jig just yet
I've ran into that problem MANY TIMES!! The first time it freaked me out too.
Take out the battery, take out the sim card. Leave it for about 5 minutes. Then do these steps:
- plugged the phone in without the battery
- Hold down the 2 volume buttons
- As you're holding those 2 buttons down, insert the batter
- You should be in download mode
- Proceed with Odin
Can you tell us what update.zip you used? Good luck!
i flashed stock froyo and my phone will not turn on.
already tried the battery pull, combo buttons (download and recovery)

THANKS for all of your suggestion. i tried all of the above an no luck.
So you've already tried the USB jig to access DL mode like @movieaddict suggested and still can't? Thats odd..... What kinda life are you getting out of the phone? Does it turn on at all? How about plugging the USB into the PC or a charger.... anything? spindles or the battery charging icon?
- If the phone is completely dead as in your getting NO life at all then it is in fact HARD BRICKED. I have heard about a JTAG fix for HARD BRICKED Vibrants and I assume its similar to the XBOX360 deal that most of us have probably done in the past, but I have not personally on the Vibrant. I know there is a youtube video/tutorial. Unfortunately thats pretty much all I know about that. I would suggest a google search or search the Q&A threads here for something like:
"Samsung, Vibrant, hard, bricked, jtag"
Good luck!
I would not recommend trying jtag yourself, as you have to rub away a section of the motherboard to access certain solder points and it requires a very expensive jtagging device. If it is truly bricked you can send it to these guys and they will jtag it and bring it back to life for you.
http://www.mobiletechvideos.com/blog/?page_id=778
Already have you on the right page there. It's the second one on that list.
I agree with the above post. Its probably not something everyone should attempt. Although I think most will realize that when you see all that is involved. Here is the thread that I first heard about it:

So your phone isn't responding at all? Try holding power and volume +. You might get a screen with orange text on it. This worked for me.
From there you can get to download mode by plugging the phone in and using the three finger method.

may i ask what did you flash and what rom was on your phone before. Knowing what was flashed and where you were coming from may probably help us better to understand what is happening.
try press volume down and up button hold it and plug data cable connected to ur computer. That will let u boot to download mode. Try and let me kw how it went.
Same thing happened to me, I was able to fix by the following post...
1. Start AIO toolbox
2. Power off the Phone.
3. Pull the Battery.
4. Plug USB cable into Phone.
5. Plug USB cable into PC.
6. Press and Hold: Volume UP + Volume DOWN + Power, all at the same time.
7. Re-insert the battery.
8. The phone will power now, when the screen starts a cycle of going to a BLACK screen, release ONLY the POWER button.
The idea is to get ODIN to see your phone again.
I had simply honey 3.3 installed and I was trying to flash a gb bootloadrr to get rid of the rainbows at boot and when I got into dl mode and the whole odin process it was going well until I got the BIG RED FAIL!!! SO I unplugged it thinking it would be ok since Ive done it before. But now my phone doesn't turn on at all doesn't charge tried 3 button combo tried everything!! Except the jig! i hard bricked a few month ago when odin froze, i thought id just get the phone ! pc screen like i did first time it froze so i unplugged but it wouldnt do anything apart from get quite hot when it stayed plugged in
i tried everything for like a week but still nothing, i tried a home-made jig aswell but that didnt do anything either (probably just bad making skills, cos it didnt work when i soft bricked other day) anyway in the end i just took it to a phone shop and they fixed it
wasnt expensive though and it took them like a day
You're sol until you can get to a shop with jtag. You know the risks with bootloader flashing and got bit. Phone is dead if you did in fact have a bad bootloader flashed. You can try removing battery, external as, and sim then replacing them and try to get back into download mode. Unlikely though.
try this:
turn the phone on until the battery runs out.
repeat
repeat
repeat
pull the battery.
volume up and down, put the battery in, plug in the USB cable (at no point do you touch the power button on the phone).
Launch ODIN on your computer.
Your phone at the Phone!PC screen?
ODIN look like it's connected?
Try to flash in ODIN just like that.
I flashed a new 2.2 image to my phone from the phone!PC screen before, not realizing that it was actually in download mode, just didn't look like it.
Thanks for your replies. The phone doesn't turn on period. Gonna look around for a phone I guess. Im actually at T-Mobile looking for a new phone.. I had good times with this phone... :'(

FYI - for those reading this -
If you get an error from flashing the boot loaders don't reboot / turn off phone!. You also remembered to uncheck auto reboot right?
If you get a fail you need to unplug / replug and try again while in download mode.
per the bootloader OP:
"Its not a problem really... Disconnect and reconnect your phone, in the same Download mode, restart ODIN and reflash the tar file. Please do not turn off your phone, or change mode or remove battery. It might not return to life. This is the sole reason why I have asked you to uncheck Auto-reboot."
Pm sent. I can repair this with JTAG. Anyone else in a similar issue just PM me for help...

I am not able to get into Odin download mode. I have all my drivers installed and when I connect the phone the battery icon pops up but if I do the three button method the screen goes black like it's supposed to be it just reboots and either goes back to the battery or powers on. (I am on ICS Passion V12 if that helps any.)

Cut the phone off, pull the battery out and put it back in. Hold volume up and volume down keys at the same time(do not hold power button) and plug the usb cable in. If you have gingerbread boot loaders then it's really simple, cut the phone off and hold volume up key only then press the power button.

It appears I can't catch a break!:crying:
I got the phone restored to 2.1 and it worked flawlessly.
I plugged it up to my pc to upgrade to 2.2 through Kies. I had charged to 100%, it upgraded successfully and said the device would reboot. It never did.
It appears Kies and 2.2 have hard bricked the phone. I don't get a charging indicator and can't get into recovery or download. The phone is completely unresponsive.
I am really starting to hate Samsung.
Yea - there should be a big warning everywhere not to use kies.
If you connect the phone to the pc does it show up in Odin? If so flash away.
Try the battery method again. Also instead of going to 2.1 you may want to try the Froyo KB5 2.2 Heimdall 1-click:

Hey there. My phone was unresponsive as well, would not go into download mode, even tried the battery thing..
This link, One-Click Unbrick
Try that and see if it works for you, make SURE you have the latest Java.
My phone wasn't completely black, I had the Phone to PC error, but I could NOT get it to get into download or even see that something was plugged in. It was unresponsive to everything. I tried this program and BAM, I'm back into bootlooping. Shut my phone off, turned on in bootloader and reinstalled everything.
You MAY have to reinstall somethings so you might have to go back to square one, however at least you'll have a working phone.
Kies also bricked my first Galaxy.
Hopefully the One-Click unbrick will work for you! I wish you good luck!

Samsung may replace the phone for you, call and tell them it bricked while using kies. For future reference do NOT use kies ever again, it is known to brick devices. If your phone is getting no power at all, then calling Samsung is your only choice and hope they replace it for you. I wish I would have known you were planning to use kies, definitely would have warned you not to. You can look into buying a usb jig for your phone, they are under $5 and maybe could help. You can also make them yourself for around 1 dollar.

The phone is out of warranty so I'm sure if they'd replace it or charge me to fix it.
The jig thread said it didn't work if you are completely unresponsive.
I'd used Kies on my Wife's Captivate and had no problems so I didn't know it would wonk up my sons Vibrant.

Yea you could be right about the warranty issue but it was Samsung's program that screwed up your phone. If you haven't called them already, I would call and explain that you would still have a working phone if it wasn't for kies bricking your device. After all, Samsung recommends us to upgrade through kies even tho it has caused more damage than good from my experience. It's worth a try, you never know.

Long story short, phone has worked perfectly until yesterday. Looked down, phone turned itself off. Went to fire it back up and was hung up at the "galaxy S/Samsung" screen. I have been looking through every relevant thread that the search pulled up and still haven't found an answer. I have followed all the directions to get it to the download mode and also downloaded the AIO vibrant toolbox/files and tried restoring to stock ROM. At first, my computer (desktop) installed the device and recognized it. Odin also recognized it. After about 20 minutes Odin was hung up on the 4th step. Now the phone doesnt do anything. No power, no screen image, no battery indicator..nothing. I'm not trying to do anything special, I just want my phone to work again..as I'm stuck using my crappy bberry again.

Sorry for the late response gentlemen, wife is 8 months pregnant... dealing with exorcist like hormones. I tried the soft brick fix earlier and it still does nothing (although it worked on my first attempt before ODIN timed out). I still have a pure black screen with no detection of any phone on my PC or in ODIN (no yellow). I've tried with and without my sd card as well as about every finger combo I have read about. As a side note, before I created this thread, I tried a fix from another thread that suggested I download some kies (sp?) program via samsung... needless to say that is when all this nonsense started to not cooperate. I have uninstalled that. Currently I'm trying to use the AIO vibrant toolbox, but still no dice with ODIN.
**also, since my phone magically turned off and started this whole boot cycle, the AIO toolbox says that the USB Debugging mode is disabled...not sure if that means anything, but I assume that is important?

Which couldn't be done due to the phone not getting past the bootscreen.
Did you try theexels advice? I've been at a point where download mode won't start, but I found out it would start as long as I pulled the battery and then without trying to turn it on, put it into download mode.
Also the phone did at least get to the same screen after you used Kies, it only completely died when Odin stalled?

I have quite a few times, but nothing ever shows up in the ID:COM area. The only time It did was prior to the kies install. After further investigation, it seems like that was the worst possible thing to install.
Do. "pull out the battery method" via USB cable. I hard bricked my phone. Samsgun357 helped me so much. Try different computer and different cable. I fixed my problem by my friend 's computer because my computer could recognize my phone only once time.
