[Q] Can I Use A Different USB Cable? - XPERIA X10 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I thought I read somewhere that SE's microUSB cables were slightly different from others...Anyone know if that's true?
I'd be really grateful if someone tried mounting their SD card using a BlackBerry cable and told me results.
I think I ruined my phone, trying to figure out what the issue might be.
Thanks in advance, guys!

Hi,
I dont know about blackberry cable but i have use my Nokia N97's Cable and my wife's digetal camera cable on my x10, and they all work fine.
I think its a standard micro USB cable

Well, there is some difference in cables, I do not know exactly what but when I use any of the other cables I have at home, I can charge the phone just fine but it won't connect to the computer. Connecting to USB port on the computer only affects the battery, nothing else, when I don't use the original. Havn't tested all cables out there, might just be my other cables that are faulty (damn cats, chewing on anything and everything).

it's a generic micro USB cable, you can find it at NOkia or HTC store
thanks for the reply, i already made some research and found out that the host cable is in fact a special cable that has 2 wires grounded on the micro usb side.
i actually was able to make one, but it must have broke a soldering point and if i connect it, it drains my battery in 10 minutes...
after the failure i just brought one out of ebay.
regards!
BTW: i encountered and other problem...
i had 2 micro USB cables, and i destroyed 1 to make the host cable, they looked the same so i picked one at random, now the phone wont change with this cable with the ac adapter connected i have to connect it to the PC to that it can receive power.
I tested with an other cable and it worked...has anyone experienced this?
I made one using an old USB extension cable. It took about 10 mins. Short the green and white wires on the female side of the USB cable. Now will use any normal in-car charger.

you have to have a short on the 2 data wires for it to charge.

[Q] TB won't establish usb connection

when phone is plugged into PC it will not show a usb connection on the phone it just charges the device the computer also does not see the phone. I have also plugged it into my macbook and nothing happens. Anyone else have this problem or any solutions?
What's your ROM?
when you put the usb in the charging port on the TB, does it feel wiggly or loose to you? It's supposed to be a solid connection. My last TB was loose in the charging port and would do the same thing
usb
try another cable, try taking out the card and putting it in the pc, the data pins might not be establishing a connection
Hey guys after trying everything possible and seeing that my buddys TB connects fine i took it to Verizon and their sending a new one in the mail hopefully that solves everything
I have the same problem, computer will charge but not recognize usb connection nor will phone recognize connection? Have had this problem across multiple roms thinking it was software problem but to no avail. Have tried multiple cables and computers? My connector appears to be in good condition visually , which probably doesn't mean much. Just wondered if anyone could think of another possibility before I lean towards hardware problem?
Had this issue before get a new cable if that doesnt work idk thats all i had to do.
I've tried 4 cables and 3 computers and 3 roms.... Guess It's a hardware problem.
had the same issue and it was hardware and my phone was replaced by Verizon.
Sometimes if you don't plug into the usb 2.0 port, things can get fishy. Usually the 2.0 port is alone opposite of the other usb ports on laptops.

[Q] USB Cable type for Sony Tablet - specific details

Hi everyone,
and thanks in advance for any help / advice that you may have for me.
I'll start off with my question, before I unload all of my information. I simply would like to know exactly what type of USB Connection the Sony Tablet has, and therefore, what specific USB Cable I need to buy in order to connect it to my PC running Vista.
I bought a Sony Tablet and have been surprised the lack of information in regards to the USB connectivity of the device. Specifically, the exact 'cable type' required to connect the device to a PC. Everywhere I have read so far, it simply says USB Micro, or USB 2.0 micro. But when I try use the micro USB cable that I currently use with my Xperia Play phone (which works fine for PC transfer with the phone) it's doesn't work at all with the Sony Tablet. It doesn't even register on the PC when I plug the cable into the tablet. Just nothing.
Since then, I have read a lot about USB, and found that there are different types, like 'Mini USB' versus 'Micro USB'. Apparently there is also Micro USB 'A' and Micro USB 'B'. And finally, apparently there is 4 pin micro usb and 5 pin micro usb type.
hope this all makes sense, many thanks guys.
Austab.
This tablet uses micro USB, I'm pretty sure the cable for your Xperia should work fine with the tablet. Perhaps you plugged it in upside down?
Thanks for the reply, I agree with your thought train. If it works with the Xperia, then surely it should work with tablet. I'll try it again after work today, and confirm. Is it actually possible to plug the cable in the wrong way around?
I'll kick myself if I did! Thanks again, cheers.
Austab.
It cannot be plugged in upside down, unless you use extreme force and break it.

But yeah, this cable *should work, if it works with your Xperia Play. In principle there is only one kind of micro-USB cable (well, actually it could have either regular type A *OR micro type A connector at one end, but let's keep it simple. Mini-USB is a different kind and A and B are just connector types.
See this picture with different USB connectors:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Types-usb_new.svg
Your cable should have a regular USB A connector (the one on the top left) at one end and micro-USB B connector at the other end (the one on the bottom right).
Yeah, it should work; I'm using the same USB cable that I use with my Xperia Arc.
For what it's worth, I've been having issues too. Mostly windows fails to find the drivers and install them. I've talked to multiple Sony reps and have tried multiple computers but haven't had any luck. Maybe it's a bad cable but I have had Windows detect the device...just unable to install the plug-n-play drivers.
Systems I've tried it on:
Custom built - Windows 7 with Service Pack 1
Dell - Windows XP Service Pack 3
Sony Vaio Laptop - Windows XP Service Pack 3
I had the same problem on both of tablet P and tablet S. I can tell you, its more about luck than the wrong cable type! At the end, it just works after retrying a few plugs and unplugs.
Hope they can get a fix for this soon.
Hey again guys, I've now tried the cable again with my Sony Tablet, and I'm definitely plugging it in correctly. There's no response whatsoever on the tablet or the PC once I've plugged the cable in.
When using the same cable on my Xperia play, the phone will instantly start charging once I plug the cable in to the PC. However, the PC doesn't actually recognize the phone as a device (i.e. it doesn't show up in windows explorer, or launch the Ericsson Phone Software, as it once did). It charges the phone, but doesn't talk to it, if that makes sense.
So it would seem that some Micro USB cables are good for charging only, but not for data transfer / PC recognition.
I'll buy a different cable tomorrow so will let you know if it works then.
Thanks again for all the replies guys I appreciate it.
cheers again,
Austab
Looks like the cable is faulty then and you have to try another one.
I bet one of data wires is broken, or a data contact inside connector is broken (worn down), because when you connect your Xperia Play it should also be recognized as a device.
Then again, maybe there is something wrong with your computer.
Can you try the same cable on another computer, and see if the device is recognized, before you buy a new cable. Or let them check the cable at the store to see if it really is faulty.
My understanding is you need an OTG USB cable, (On The Go) - this is what you need to connect USB keys and other hard-drives and so therefore I would think external PCs too.
I bought a nokia one for around 5 pounds from amazon, do a search for OTG USB cables,
thanks
Pratish
He wants to connect it to a computer, not connect external devices to it.
So he needs a regular micro-USB cable.
the cable is USB Host finde with this name
People, wtf are you talking?!
He *does not* need USB host (OTG) cable. That's for connecting USB devices, like keyboard, mouse, USB-storage etc., to your tablet.
He wants to connect his tablet to a computer. For that he needs a regular type A USB to type B micro-USB cable.
Hi,
Would seem like op had a charging cable, not data one. As stated, he need a regular data cable with appropriate connectors. OTG has nothing to do with it.
Sent from my HTC Desire using XDA App
Hi Crazzzik,
so you're saying that there are micro usb cables for charging only, and then there are micro usb cables for data + charging etc? That would explain things perfectly for me, as my cable seems to work for charging devices, but not communicating with a PC (i.e. data transfer).
I'm getting a new cable today - sorted!
Many thanks everyone for your help & advice
Austab
Yes when I got the cable for my sony tablet s, I saw several usb cables that would fit the tablet, but on the package it said specifically "for charging only, not meant for data transfer", so they do make the cabkes just for charging, as a PC tech, I was a little embarrassed that I just found this out this weekend.
Thanks
I also got a microUSB-cable adapter, it works fine with usb driver / joypad and keyboard
but not sure if it's capable for connecting with PC or even for charging
hello all,
I recently bought the usb cable for the tablet they sell at the sony store. The micro usb to female normal usb ( I think you know what im talking about). It is sony tablet specific. The micro usb end of the cable is square instead of tappered at one side. it worked fantastic for plugging in and usb deviced to the tablet, but when I tried to plug it into my galaxy s, it wouldn't fit. just thought those thinking of buying one would appreciate the heads up so its not a shock if they try to use it on any other devices. Im sure you can find that same cable at any well stocked computer shop.
i borrowed a htc wildfire s cable, this works and installs drivers.

USB cable connection not working!

Hello, i am new to xda-developers, so please have patience with me
I was using my original usb cable to charge my phone from my laptop. But one day some strange things started to happen, when my phone's battery was completely depleted i connected the usb and phone started turning on and off very often and I wasn't able to charge it even a bit. When connected to wall socket charger everything seems to be fine, it's charging.
But now the usb is not working, neither computer sees it (before i used it), i used other cables, no good. Now it's original ginderbread ROM, maybe i should reinstall it, but i can't do anything since usb is not working in any way.
Maybe someone of you had similar problems and know how to solve it?
Thanks in advance!

Thanks for the quick reply!
I tried cleaning it with Tooth Brush and even used special liquid for cleaning electronics contacts and corrosion removal, everything seems to be clean. But still nothing happens when connecting to laptop.
P.S. Same cable is working when charging from wall socket charger, so it seems the contacts must be clean and intact (at least power supply contacts), so maybe it should charge from laptop?
P.S.S. I forgot to mention, when the phone's battery is depleted, when i connect to laptop, it doesn't charge but in time phone becomes hot. So maybe this would prove it's a hardware problem?
Try different laptop USB port. If this doesnt help than probably your data cable is faulty. Just replace it with another one.
I think Your phone is fully operational if AC charging without any problems.

I have already tried different laptop ports, even different laptops, already tried with different cables (which all functioning properly with other devices and all are marked U2). I am pretty sure that's not connection / cable problem.

V30 otg problems

Recently picked up the v30 and purchased an otg cable to be able to hook my printer to my phone for work (did this on my g4 no problem). First plug shows up and when i plug it in, the phones usb status goes to "power supply" (like im trying to charge another device, not charge my v30). If i changs it to any other option, a second later it changes back to power supply. I thought this was strange as nothing was even plugged into the otg cable. Returned it and got another one of a different brand , same problem. Got a specific cord thats usb c on one end, printer plug on the other side. Same exact thing. All of these cables worked fine on my buddies Motorola, so at this point, i can only assume its the phone. I have tried plugging multiple devices to the otg cables, even getting a usb to micro usb to try my old otg cable and all had the same problem. Verizon sent a brand new phone to me thinking my cable port was bad. It did the same thing as well. If anyone else has run into this issue or has any advice, that would be much appreciated. My work printer is old and the wifi direct sucks to hook up constantly and it likes to disconnect in the middle of printing.
Thanks,

Hi,
I have been having the same issues. I am trying to use the OTG adapter for my Meridian DAC. Ordered through Amazon 2 times, with different sellers claiming compatibility. But no luck.
And to concur with you, I get the identical issue where it switches momentarily to my selection, then Immediately goes to Power supply.

Regarding connecting a external DAC to the V30 I currently have that working with my V30 and my FIIO Kunlun E18. The cable used is below. I know that it's not the same thing that you are talking about because it's not exactly an OTG adapter but it works for my purposes. Good luck to you.

Thanks for the info.
Do I need to change anything in the settings?
Or is it basically plug and play?

This adapter saved me and my old sandisk flash drive back talking again.

It's plug and play but when the DAC is connected it asks you if you want to set a default app to the USB device. Be sure to select NO and just cancel out if window. I was selecting yes when I had USB pro music app installed and it prevented me from hearing anything from LG music player, YouTube, and other 3rd party apps.

I'm also facing the same issue with an otg adapter, exact same symptoms.
Is there any solution other than buying specific otg adapters like the ones listed above?
I've also noticed that my V30 is very picky when it comes to usb connection. I have an usb c flash drive, and if it moves in the slightest, the connection just drops. It also happens with some usb cables that I've tried to use to connect the phone with my pc.
