Ok so this is probably a very noob question but what is the difference between them all? Are they interchangeable, does one offer better signal than another, are they compatible with all roms or are they rom specific? I currently have jk2 and am rooted with obsidian 4.2 w/ stock kernal. Just curious to know if one may have better signal strength cause the part of town I live in i have poor 3g signal and wonder if there is help available to boost the antenna

JK6 is the newest leaked (Not official OTA) Firmware based on android 2.2
JK2 is a slightly older leaked (Not official OTA) firmware based on android 2.2
JI6 is the second official tmobile firmware for the vibrant and the first OTA update. it is based on android 2.1
JI5 was an official samsung update through the kies program (tmobile advised against using it) it was based on android 2.1
JI4 was a leaked (Not Official OTA) Firmware based on android 2.1
JI2 was a leaked (Not Official OTA) Firmware based on android 2.1
JFD is the original stock vibrant firmware based on android 2.1
each one has a different modem and so signal will differ a bit between them.
but the firmware version does not always mean that you have that modem (it depends on the developers preference, or your own a lot of 2.1 roms were based on JI6 but used the JI2 modem)
Ok thanks for that info. I believe I have jk2, is it possible to download just the modem from jk6 or not

http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=864925 <-- JL1 just the modem.
Thanks
UPDATE: So I flashed the JL1 modem and while GPS gets pretty much an instant lock, my DL speeds dropped about 500kbs, UL speeds went up about 100kbs?!? And signal stays pretty constant, though i still dont have anybetter 3G in my house. Sent from my SGH-T959 using XDA App

Hey quick question. Is the new KA leak tmobile vibrant based? Like is the kernal and modem and everything for the vibrant. If it is could we expect to see comparable battery life to eclair builds?
Sent from my SGH-T959 using XDA App
Yes these builds were made for the Tmobile Vibrant.
Im running bionic rom which is great compared to stock 2.2 but my data is really slow.
Sent from my SGH-T959 using XDA App
That is because Bionix V uses KA7 modem and that is TERRIBLE when it comes to reception and data.
Flash a KA5 modem. Look under the dev forums for the clockwork flashable download.
That will fix your data and improve your reception.
Will do thanks, anyone else have suggestions?

I think you should use the JL5 modem I got crazy speed on my vibrant. Indoors I would get like 2.5mbs down and outdoors I get like almost 5mbs. Crazy good and I can't complain about battery life but maybe that's because I got a spare battery

We all seem to have differnt luck with different modems.
KA7 is the best for me followed by KA5 and JK6 but your mileage may vary.
this link:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=868774
has them all. Try 'em all out untill you find the best for you.
Its gonna be a crap shoot depending on where you live...My data was out for 6 days until this morning and I can only get Edge so the KA7 is working good for me and I ve tried em all.
Mileage may vary seems the best answer for sure. JL1 works best for me. No idea why but data screams. KA6 was alright, KA7 blows. everything else was just average.

Have you try factory reset? That seems to work for some people.
Or you can try flash modem to which ever version that works best for you. It seems to work for most phones...except few oddballs out there.
Asking won't help much, you just gotta test it to know which is best for your phone. KA6, KA7 all works for me.

Not that TERRIBLE. BOTH works for me just fine. KA7, I did not have to do clear anything.
Tried all them and so far ka5 is ok.. Ka7 has fast gps lock but slow data, ka6 has fast data, fast gps lock but very innacurate, telling me im 30 miles from where I really am. Jk6 has extremely fast data but no gps lock at all. Then theres the ka5 which gives me decent data speed and fast gps lock. Does the modem really have anything to do with gps ?

is it part of the vibrant or the upcoming vibrant 4g?
is it better than ka7?

It's another leak for the standard vibrant. No one will ever be able to give you a clear answer on whether or not it's better. It's newer, so we just assume it to be better.
It is the leak for the newest modem from samsung firmware update.
I am using the ji5 because it seems to be faster on my phone compared to ka5, ka6, ka7 and kb1. Yup, I tried them all.
Hi you guys. Please forgive a n00b girl's question... But...
I have had my fascinate for a while (Oct 2010) but at times the reception was horrible and I absolutely came to despise the stock Touchwiz ROM.
So, just as I was getting to my wits' end (and jump ship to a better phone), the official froyo release came along and most of my cures were answered. In an attempt to get the froyo upgrade to take (I had the dreaded update failure issue), I've rooted my fascinate and experienced the joys of custom ROMs, kernels, and mods.
So, now, I am LOVING the fascinate... But the signal still seems to suck compared to other VZW 3G phones.
So... What radio versions work best? I have the ED01 running on mine using the Evil Fascination 3.5.1 and OTB 1.3 kernel.
Do any seem to get better reception?
Thanks, guys! Keep up the good work!

I have updated PRL... Haven't tried EC01. Is it better than the ED01 that comes with the froyo OTA?
I'm using ED01 with the Community ROM. My device seems little faster with GPS lock than EC01 was but every device acts different.

The conventional wisdom is that ec01 was just a leaked-and-renamed version of what was shortly thereafter released as ed01.
It's possible that ed01 was a slightly later build... I've seen no consensus on either being better than the other, but ed01 was the one that got officially released.
More recently (last week), vzw pushed an ota update to ed03 which included a new modem. you can get ed03 by following the same instructions found here to "get to ed01 quickly". We've not yet seen a flashable packaging of the ed03 modem afaik.
I'm running the ed03 modem, it runs fine but I can't say I've seen obviously better reception than ed01.

Hi all,
I'm getting very low signal in my phone, only one or two bars with passion v13 and now with ICS euphoria even when being next to the window.
I get excellent signal in a HTC G2.
Does anyone have a similar problem?
Sent from my SGH-T959 using XDA App
Flash a new modem. Scrizz has a bunch especially for ICS.
I forgot to mention that I have already tried several modems: ka7, ka6, jksomething, but nothing changes.
Try a different city or a different phone... or a different cell company
sent from the xda app on my android smartphone.
I'm right around Chicago it is an ICS issue. My gf has miui and kb5 with 3 bars of H. I have currently 1 bar 3g same setup on euphoria.

You could always try the CM9 alpha or icssgs, see if there is any difference
If changing modems makes no difference, then it must be the rom.

Unfortunately its all of them. The only fix I have found is getting off ICS. Once the newest glitch kernel is back ported for cm7/miui.us I won't be able to careless lol.
P.S. this reply would not be possible on ICS, I am at work right now.

Interesting. I should have mentioned kernels (many to choose from), but it sounds like you might have tried a few of them also. Good luck.
You might want to discuss it in one of the ICS rom threads, or the modem thread:

Phoenix Down.
Every ICS I experience this on until Docs V5. My phone is useable at work again on ICS. It's worth a shot if low signal is what is holding you back from 4.0.

I am also in Chicago running Euphoria no issues with signal strength. I also work for T-Mobile and can tell you a bad SIM card is the most common reason for signal issues ;-)

If someone requests a new SIM card from T-Mobile, do they get to keep the same phone number? Also, I've had my Samsung Vibrant's battery since around Oct 2010. How much longer would you think this battery will be good 'til?
