I have a Moto Backflip atm but might upgrade to the x10. Now I can live with out Motoblur, but is there a similar feature on the x10? I was under the impression the motoblur type function of syncing contacts to social netowrking sites was only a motblur feature but my friend with a Samsung Epic said he can do the same thing and said he thought this was standard in android, or is this is a Samsung UI similar to Motoblur?
Another thing I love about the bflip is the ability to activate the camera LED as a flashlight. Is there an app to activate the light manually?
Also, with ATT locking down the backflip from installing apps directly from the SD card, I wondered if this lockdown applied to the x10 to? I know apps can be side loaded and this can be bypassed with software hacks, but just wondered.
What version of Android ships on the phone? What is the latest version available in a custom ROM that is actually stable?
TImescape will allow you to do the facebook-contacts thing. I do not activly use timescape but rather ran it thru the set up once and that was the link in the chain. Furthermore do not task kill timescape or freeze it with Titianium as this will break that chian.
Flashlight- http://www.androidzoom.com/android_applications/tools/xperia-flashlight_gowc.html The widget even looks like a tiny X10, It's kinda funny. Press tiny xperia and bam light is on.
I have it on my home screen near the middle, I work nights so I use it every night to make my way to the bed and not wake up the wife with the real bedroom light.
We get 1.6 out of the box, We have a nice stable Global Generic firmware flash for 2.1 . I am an ATT customer in the USA and I use this FW with no problems.
There is a 2.2 out but I hear more bad than good so I'm gonna chill right here with my 2.1
I see timescape does facebook and twitter. I assume it does myspace as well? This looks like it is standard on the x10. Is that correct? I have found video of it on youtube but the one thing i cant find is what the screen looks like when you click a contacts name in your phone book except one, and that only showed twitter. Am I correct to assume it will show a tweet/status and the contacts phone number just like motoblur? Does it allow you to write some one on say facebook right from with in your phone book with out launching facebook? Again I can live with out the social networking stuff but just curious to see how it works and obviously do not feel comfortable putting my data in the demo phone at the store to test this aspect of the phone.
When you say global generic 2.1, I assume you mean just plain ol stock 2.1 with out any modification at all? I use the Preclair rom on my bflip so 2.1 is a must for me.
Last but not least, how are things coming in terms of kernals for the x10? Is the 2.1 rom still using the stock kernal from 1.6 or is it newer?
What about installing apps? Do we have to sideload like the backflip or is there already a patch to fix this?
Thanks for your time AKA_Rizzo. I apreciate it!
the 2.1 upgrade has as "social phonebook" which syncs with social networks. don't know about Myspace though.. never used it..
I use the Facebook app that comes preloaded on the phone as it's a richer, more complete solution.
not 100% on this but I think that the kernal we had on 1.6 was the 2.1 kernal.. and we're still on it..
Global generic is the SE global generic, without all of the networks own guff added on top..

Ok, so I got my AWS dell streak (with the bands for T-Mobile 3G) and I absolutely LOVE it. Im coming from a mytouch 4g, so while I enjoy huge screen, there are some things that just dont work the same.... Im not new at all to android, but I am a staight up noob when it comes to the streak (dell products in general) I was hoping you experts could point me in the right direction.
To start the phone came with 2.2.2 out of the box. I installed clockworkmod recovery, and flashed streakdroid 1.8.1 Very stable and fast. However I cant figure out some little stuff, and im sure its easy I just dont know where to look.
1. Lockscreen is stuck in landscape. I installed adw ex to flip back and forth from my homescreen, but my lockscreen is always in landscape....is there a simple way to force it back to portrait? I dont need all the fancy unlock widget crap, just protrait lol.
2. Some games (gangstar 2) will only play on a tiny potion of my screen...If I wanted a small screen I wouldve kept my Mytouch 4G!... I tried the compadibility mode in spare parts but that didnt help.
3. Obviously some gameloft games wont work yet as said in the streakdroid thread. Is there alist of which ones work and which ones dont? Also if we install sd files ourselves instead of downloading them is there a way to "patch" them to work?" Ive seen different "packages" for different devices ex. sammy tab, nexus s, and desire will all have different sd card data.... is there one that would work with our device?
4. Notification LED app worh it? Just need some opinions, I miss the leds blinking lol.
5. Im also interested to see what settings you all use in your "install.txt" for streakdroid. Also wondering if Perfmod made your phone not as stable. Would perfmod help out performance on some games? Or not worth the trouble?
6. What kind of cases do you all use for your streak? I just ordered the otterbox commuter, it does seem kinda bulky on a phone thats not small already lol.... I assume I wont be using this as my mp3 player while I work out
7. What video chat program do you guys use. I dont like that oovoo requires you to be "signed in" at all times to get a video call...I liked Tango and Qik on the Mytouch, but they are not working yet. They have found a workaround for the mytouch, Im curious if this would fix our FFC issues as well..
Would this work?: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=975502
8. On my Mytouch 4G (CM7) there was an option under settings>applications that would let me hold the back button to kill the current running application. I enjoy using that over a task manager, is there a way to do that with our Streak?
There are probaby a few other dumb questions that I cant recall right now. Anyway, thanks for the input....this is my new baby haha
Hi just to say i have just installed the Notification LED i like it down side is every time u switch ur streak of u have to open it or it just mite be me

Odd, when I tango all I get is the back camera...it never detects my front...
Thanks for the responces!
Edit... tango does work, just not very good lol
OK I am having a new "issue"
1. When I use the volboost kernel (havent tried any other yet); my phone speaker volumes are very loud and high quality. But from the 3.5 jack my music is lower in volume and sound quality...any ideas on that one?
Hi everyone,
I must point out that I am pretty new to the whole custom ROM thing, I still have the stock ROM and everything on my xperia x10,
so my question is which ROM gives the best performance (ie less lag, good battery life, not many bugs, etc)? and can you give me simple instructions on how to install it because I don't want to screw something up and brick my phone, please?
Also when having a custom ROM installed, are you able to implement (install) patches given out by sony ericsson or you just follow the forum and wait for the developer of the ROM to make a patch, and if there's a patch from the developer how do you install it? (I presume you can't install the patches from sony ericsson, I'm just asking). And how often does the developer release the patches?
And do I have to delete everything with a factory reset from my phone before I do ANYTHING? at which step should it be done? can I backup everything using backup and restore program that's already aboard the x10 and restore it later, or the program will disappear when I install a custom ROM? if it wont, will it bring back my sms and mms effectively, and applications too?
Try this, Wolfbreak's CM 6.1.3 V54(fully working, very stable froyo 2.2 rom with CyanogenMod settings and themes.

I'm definitely a fan of trips miui rom. He also just came out with a miui gingerbread rom, it's a bit unstable at this point though.

use wolfbreak's latest rom. it's very stable with lots of things you can tweak and have fun with!

+1 for wolfbreak's
Hi there, as you can see from my post count, I'm pretty new to this as well. I've only tried wolfbreak so far but am amazed at it's stability. As far as I've seen you will lose SMS etc however lots of things can be saved to the cloud, so first thing I'd do is make sure all contacts are marked as Google sync
I initially found the flashing to be problematic, but that was mostly because I was an idiot and failed to notice that the flashing software also adds functions such root access and xrecovery when the phone is NOT in flash mode. Since. Then I've been able to upgrade to the latest version (06) without even using a computer. Simply downloading the file onto my phone, moving it with the included file manager and rebooting to the recovery menu
I know have a faster more responsive phone with lots of added features such as Flash, Voice Search and loads more customization options. IMHO well worth the twenty minutes or so it will initially take
Make a note of your favourite apps as well, as the market only remembers paid for apps not your free ones, but for me the change over was pretty seamless and after only a day and a half with it am more than happy. So much stuff is held within the cloud that setting back up isn't the mega ballache it seems before doing it
Wolfbreak's ROM is the most 'fun' to use, the most tweaks avaliable
TripnMIUI's ROM is one you need if you just want your phone to work. Also, it has an iphone-like look (IMO I hate it, but some people like it)
Jereplea's Gingerbread mod is for those who want to be active in making the ROM better and test Gingerbread and custom kernels. It's not really that stable, but it's getting better by the day and it's the most updated ROM.
IMO those are the 3 big ROMS, there are smaller ones and you're free to check them out, they're pretty good too, but those are just my opinions on the top 3 ROMS.

you can keep your sms, call logs, contacts by using mybackup root
Thank-you, that certainly makes me more tempted to try the other flavours out there, as I said I'm new to Android fiddling, appreciate the advice
Awesome ROM i'm using right now is Freex10 Beta 4 (Android 2.2), with the video recorder fixed. The ROM is stable and excellent. Runs really fast.

If you want a really good looking ROM, try the Bitsnacker 2.1 rom. It is basically the stock rom with the bitsnacker blue glow theme.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/show....php?t=1005636
If you mean THEMES, check the bitsnacker theme out for the x10 which works on android 2.1 stock and 2.2 Free X10 Beta 4 (for Freex10 ignore first post, check the second half way down the screen)

Finding the links took me ages, i got them all mixed up
If you like, it plz thank
the answer will always be it depends on what you want from a device and its really your opinion and your opinion alone thatll lewt you decide
another +1 for tripnmiui's rom, pretty well featured
for me TripNMiui is always the best
TripNMiui with custum kernel
I'd say Wolfbreak's so far...
It runs flawlessly...
I've been testing many custom ROMs for a while, and up to now, the ones I liked the most are TripNMiUI's and Wolfbreak's ones. It's hard even to pick up one of them... TripNMiUI's has a great visual and is very clean. Wolfbreak's, in the other hand, works flawlessly and very stable, and I love that ARC's style.
Actually, I'm using Wolfbreak's now.

Or use the app Titanium Backup to restore all apps and data when switching. Works like a charm for me.
I am hoping to find somewhere a good, stable, bug-free custom 2.1 Eclair ROM for the Streak. I have heard that the official European O2 version had bugs and issues, so I am looking for a superior custom one.
The reason I want 2.1 specifically is because all versions of Android 2.2 and beyond are hard-configured to close all background applications after a few minutes of not being used, regardless of memory use or availability. This effectively prevents all multi-tasking which is a deal breaker for me. Eclair doesn't have this problem, so it's the latest version of Android I care to use for hte time being.
Can anyone help me out by pointing me in the direction of the best 2.1 ROM available for the Streak? Specifically one that will work on the Rogers, AT&T or factory unlocked version that uses North American 3G bands?
Alternatively if no such thing exists, is there an easy way to get the regular 2.1 ROM onto one of these Streaks, and fix the issues reported to exist on it?
Thanks very much for any help...
To accomplish what you are talking about all you need is one of two different apps to be able to multi-task...
I was using Multi-Tasking Pro but for some reason it began to force close each time I tried to use it. Then I found a free app that doesn't have quite as many features but still lets me multi-task which is called Task XP, look it up in the market.

Thanks, I have checked out these two apps (and other similar ones) and while they allow you to switch between currently running apps/tasks, they do not override/disable Froyo's default behaviour of closing all backgrounded applications after a few minutes of inactivity.
If I leave Ebuddy and Documents To Go running in the background, and I go away for ten minutes or take a phone call, when I try to switch back to either of them, they have been automatically closed by the Android system. Android 2.2 and 2.3 do this on all devices, and the apps you mentioned above do not prevent it.
Ok, I see where you are coming from. Then I have to assume that if your phone is shutting down high priority tasks that you use often, you must have way too many others running in the background.
For a while there I was using a program called AutoKiller Memory Optimizer, where you can decide which apps are shut down first and white list those you don't want to shut down unless you are out of memory....
THen I switched from that to another app from the same developer called AutoRun Manager, which is a startup manager, but it also gives advanced functions for switching programs on and off depending what your phone is doing.
Like I don't need Skype and Fring to start up automatically, only when I select them, likewise Facebook and Twitter and things such as that, only start up under the conditions I want them too.
So if you have a program running that is shut down by Android automatically its only because something else is looking to occupy it's spot in the memory
GingerStreak (2.0) is stable when setting WIFI policy sleep to "NEVER". No random reboots after that. You might have to rebuild your APKs to avoid force close issues. Stay away from ROM Manager and Titanium Backup for apps; data is fine.
He can't use 2.0.0 because it is Android version 2.3. As for a stable 2.1 I would try either the O2 official (it might be the best you can do), the AT&T beta 2.1 (probably a bit buggier, but I'm not sure), or look at the earliest releases of StreakDroid. I'm not sure on the early releases, but they MIGHT be 2.1. For the official ROMs check the Streak wiki, you can find it on this site. As for tthe StreakDroid, you can look throught the Android Dec subforum on this site, or check on StreakDroid.com (I think they're rebuilding right now, so it might be a while for that). Any other questions just ask

I have two Android devices, both on basically stock roms, and both are having problems getting into Yahoo messenger (the official Yahoo app). I'm able to log in and out on my PC's, but both Android devices get as far as the contact list, and it keeps saying "Loading Online Contacts..." and hangs there... EVERYbody shows up as offline, and when you homescreen out and back again, it often leaves you at the login window.
I've reinstalled and rebooted and whatever... still the same. Two devices.. can't be just me, right?
I am having the exact same problem. Started by saying session timed out around 5 am today
here too.. hope they're just working for a new version.
+1 on the new version, the current one sux bawlz... inly shows account name and not real name like the desktop version... video calls only use the main camera (my damn Galaxy Tab has a front facing but still very useless camera!), and no file sharing.
With all the new Tablets running Android, you think they might see the light...
*knock* Is this thread on-going? I installed 1.0 and 1.1 without any problem but once i installed 1.3+video plugin it shows only offline contacts... Have you experienced this also?
Same for me
front camera dont work in my droid 3! :-(
it seems there's no fix. i really wanted to use video plugin on yahoo messenger and if it works there's a thread here that says "front camera now works... something like that"
hey guys.
tried LP2 out and while it isn't polished enough (let alone the bugs) for me to stay with it ...i really did like a few things, task manager, browser, and the gmail app in particular ..
will the ICS gmail app run ok on KL3 ?
i grabbed the first apk i could find online and tried it just before, but popping it in the apps folder did nothing ....and trying to install the thing ...get a can't parse apk error ..
:/
There is absolutely no way to get the ics Gmail app running on gingerbread, even if you somehow managed to get it to install, you would never be able to open it, it would just force close instantaneously. The app relies on a completely different framework than what gingerbread has. It is kind of like trying to install htc sense apps on touchwiz, it is never going to work. Sorry to say, but you’re going to have to wait for a newer ICS build if you want those new apps.
If I have helped please press the “Thanks” button
You seem like a smart guy. Able to flash roms and 128 posts since 2008, could be worse.
Why would you ever imagine that any stock app from any major revision would work on the previous OS. Certainly even by dragging and dropping the APK??
ICS is a major overhaul of the OS, we're not even talking about the fact that Gingerbread (2.3) stock apps wont work on Eclair (2.1) but ICS (4.0) apps will never work on Gingerbread (2.3).
Just sit tight, ICS will be out soon enough for us from samsung in non beta form..
yeh fair call, suspected so but really liked it so ... ah well, one can hope.
kinda the down side that when you get to the end of a cycle , with KL3 being soooo solid and near perfect .... get a few mths out of it then back to buggy roms with ICS.
but yeh, a mth or two out yet i guess .... just wee things like trying to get the edit point in the ICS browsers address bar to the end .... nightmare on the LP2.
any chance google upgrade the gingerbread browser and gmail app to be along the lines of the ones seen in ICS ..i'm guessing no lol.
fingers crossed sammy end up with a really clean ICS rom for us in a few mths then.
PS it works on xoom/honeycomb ...thats what got my hopes up
