Android Live for phones. - Android

Hello all,
Was thinking if there could be way to have some android live versions of the rOM images similar to the OSes having Live CD/DVD Where in you could boot up your machine with the Live CD/DVD and work on the OS from the CD/DVD.
We could have all the different ROM mods being put on the SD card, boot up the phone via SD card and test the ROMs before really flashing them on to the Phones.
I know the Gurus and geniuses here can make it happen.
Waiting for this to happen.

I am not sure if its version 1.5 or 1.6 but after one or the other Android stopped being able to boot to x86 chips. Which means you could build a live CD to do this but it would have to be a relatively old version of android. I believe google did this because if I remember correctly they were starting to support x86 architecture on chrome.

I am not sure If I was clear. What I am talking here is about having a mechanism for the Modified Phone ROMs to be on the SD card, boot up the phone with the ROM on the SD card and test the ROM before flashing it on the Phone.

I believe he want's a way to test the roms on his phone using some kind of a virtual machine type of program on his phone.

I do not know of anything like this for the phone itself, but what you can do is get the Android SDK and use the emulator to run the rom you want to run and test it out that way.

Cody,
Thanks for the hint. I do have the andoid emulator installed on my machine and will try your suggestion. I have interest in developing some apps or even compile the android ROMs . Will have to start somewhere.

Android on the HD2 - is it just run from the microSD card or an actual "ROM" ?

Android on the HD2 - is it just run from the microSD card or an actual "ROM" ?
I'm not new to ROMs (been mucking around with cell phones and PocketPCs for many many years now) but I'm a bit confused about the Android situation with respect to the HD2 (just found one, literally found one, and if I can get it functional I'm keeping it).
I see all these "ROMs" here and I have to ask the question:
Are they actually ROMs that I'd be using to replace the Windows Mobile stock factory ROM, or all these just "ROMs" that exist in a folder on the microSD card and I simply run some executable that fires up Android as though it were just another application running on top of Windows Mobile?
Trying to make the question simple so I hope that's enough. Wasn't sure exactly where to put it so Q&A seemed the best choice.
Thanks for any information anyone can provide.

the latter...you fire up haret which shuts down windows and loads android. android does not / cannot (for the time being) exist without windows. if you remove the sd card, android ceases to exist on your phone; windows cannot be removed.
hope that answers your question.
Ok, so when you say that one app "shuts down windows" does that mean that Android fires up and is in complete control of the device as though it had actually booted off it directly from ROM, or is it running as an application on top of Windows Mobile, that's where I get confused.
I saw a reference that some Android builds on the HD2 actually run faster or at least they benchmark higher than a real Android device like the Nexus One. I find that tough to believe but hey, if the HD2 can do it, awesome...

my understanding is it shuts windows down - it is not running as an app on top of windows, though uses the hardware to fire android. when android runs it is in control of the device. you cannot have windows and android running at the same time.
"But Maaaaaaa" (ala Eric Cartman, South Park)
Ok, so we can only run Android from the SD card. But this begs the question....WHY? What is it about the HD2 that precludes the ability to remove Winjunk altogether?
To be able to run android directly from ROM, Android needs to use NAND.
AFAIK NAND is available, but noone knows how to use it directly.
Developpers are busy trying [thread], but until now without success, however signs are it is nearly completed.
As far as I understand, NAND preloads some drivers needed for Android. (like CLRCAD which is needed for sound)
Someone knows answer to folowing:
If NAND is possible/available, will booting Android be faster? Will the "Linux boot output" disappear or not.
Until now I think Android is booting (very) slow, partially due to the "Linux boot output" (scrolling lines)

[Q] PSFreedom for HD2 that ALREADY has Android on it

Just a quick one as I haven't been able to find a post about it so far...
For those who have heard of PSFreedom, there's a build for the HD2, but it has Android bundled with it because it's aimed at WinMo users.
I am already running Android on mine and dont want to inadvertently copy over vital files so does anyone know/has anyone tried and managed to get it to work?
Pav
Its not bundled with android because its aimed at winmo users, It has android because the whole android build is custom and needs to be that way(currently). I'm sure sometime soon it will be possible to add to a current android build but for now you have to use it this way.
The easiest thing to do is to download one of the multi loaders for winmo, which lets you have multiple builds of android on you sd card and select which one you boot into. I currently have the PSfreedom build plus four other builds on my SD card and I just select which one I want to boot.
Nice one mate, thanks! I'm gonna trawl for a multi loader and give it a go now
what exactly does this app do? have a ps3 but never heard of this...
Its a custom build of android that allows you to "jailbreak" the ps3 so that you are able to run homebrew and backup games on it. It needs to be used each time the ps3 is turned on to re-jailbreak it.
It started out as a usb stick with a processor on it that you plugged into the ps3, each time it was turned on. but it has now been ported to many devices.
Heres the link for the android build that has been made for the hd2.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=777120
With the multi-loaders that we have, it's not really that inconvenient to boot into the android build each time. It would be nice though if it could somehow be added to the current full android builds that we have, though I'm not sure if that is even possible as I don't know how it works.

[Q] How to install newer os on this tablet

Hi everyone
I have the following tablet made by Mach Speed Technologies:
Trio Stealth G2 7" display
1GB RAM
CPU: Dual Cortex-A9 Dual 1.5GHz Multi-Core (its a dual core with a total of 1.5GHz)
its not rooted yet, I don't know how. If it needs to be rooted for this can someone quick explain that?
It came with Android 4.0 and has never updated through the settings, and the factories website does not even mention this tablet. The guy at Radioshack said I could install the update myself so here I am trying to figure out how.
If possible my original plan was to just instal the newest Android release. But today I just found out about ROM's.
So how do I install the newest Android release or if that's not possible a very secure custom ROM?
On one website it just said to put the rom image on a sd card (or in my case a microsd card) and put it in the tablet, then the tablet would use it as an update after asking you with a pop up. Is that true?
I have a bit of experience with Linux and coding but none with Android
with that update through sd card is true but most of times you need to have specific app or recovery as it may be treated as a rom and in that case you need to be rooted and have recovery. if you have experience u good with android as it is based on unix core
Well, I guess the first step is to be rooted then? How do I go about doing that?
I have the "Root with Restore by Bin4ry" downloaded on my computer and the usb driver installed from the google sdk manager.
But my computer does not see my tablet at all.
I have the same tab I have got adb to somewhat pick it up an it has aml flashtool and safe mode this shows u how to get into all those all but for safe mode copy this an past after youtube.com

I have the same model. Great hardware, lousy os. Crouton with ubuntu trusty build runs well if you are a little computer savvy and dont mind typing in terminal commands. It runs parallel to chrome. I have heard you can install linux native on this model, but have never tried.
Hello, If you find a way how to install android apps on Acer CB5-311 chromebook, will be great. Thank you!
Yeah, it is possible.

I know you porobably solve your problem, or change your device, but i want to reply to it, if anyone else are searching for answers.
Because of drop of support for this device a have decided to move to linux.
On internet are some scrips, which can do it by one or two clicks, but they are old today and it's i bit more tricky today.
In general, you can use arch linux, which instalation still work, but graphical session doesn't start (i don't know why, i'm not expert on arch). You can use Clifford script, which don't work for today, because chrome os karnel has been changed and it is more difficult to use it.
So i install arch linux, with working kernel a delete it's rootfs. Into it i installed ubuntu-base 18.04, update, instal basic packages and kubuntu desktop.
Suprisingly it work very well, even graphic acceleration works.
If anyone wan't to know, how did i do it, i can help.
But i think no one is using it today, except few people like me.
Hy! need help cb5-311

I need help to change chrome OS with linux on my old acer cb5-311. [email protected] Thank you!
In case no one has known yet, the CB5-311 is running an Nvidia Tegra K1 processer if I'm not mistaken. Therefore, because it is an ARM-based device, using another OS other than ChromeOS is impossible as far as I can tell.
Good to know about the Tegra k1 processor...
Hey, sorry for waiting.
Here is some linux images for this device: https://github.com/hexdump0815/imagebuilder
It is prepared to flash on SD and boot from it. From this awesome develeper can be also found the linux kernel for this chromebook.
It is also posible to did something similar like chrubuntu did earlier, it means flash kernel to KERNEL C partition and boot from internal storage (but my 16 GB internal storage is i bit small)
Good luck, with this.
P. S . only problem is with graphic drivers. Drivers provided from NVIDIA is for ubuntu 14 and they are too old to use. So you you have to regret hardware acceleration (or find another way how to make it work).
Read also the the issues and releases on github.
Second way is to use archlinux. There is and script, which will do anything for you.
https://github.com/RaumZeit/LinuxOnAcerCB5-311 even if this script isn´t for my CB5-311-T23S, it works.
If you don´t know how to resize internal storage and flash working kernel, it is posible to use this script and install arch linux and later back up kernel modules, format partition with root and there install ubuntu base. ArchKernel work fine with it, but latest working version is ubuntu 18. (Snap don´t work on this old kernel). If you want ubuntu 20 (or newer), you will have to use kernel from hexdump0815 mentioned earlier)

Is it possible to dual boot an Android phone?

Dear XDA Community,
Sorry, this is probably an odd question, but is it possible to run multiple ROMs alongside? Similarly to dual booting Windows and Linux on a computer. If it is possible, is it something you would not advise or could it be a difficult process to get it running smoothly? Thank you in advance.
@jason.mix
You can run multiple ROMs if device supports this. Read more here.

Thank you for your response and sharing the link. I am wondering whether you could also create a new partition through TWRP recovery and flash all the ROMs directly on your device rather than using an external SD card which has slightly lower read speeds.
And would you be able to tell me whether I could run a custom ROM in a virtual machine or in an emulator on a computer? How do developers test new builds? Thank you in advance.
@jason.mix
With regards to an emulator:
Oracle's VirtualBox emulator allows you to install and run Android-x86 / x84 custom ROMs. Example here.
