Are all Galaxy S Model Roms compatible - Vibrant Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

hey i was looking in the i9000 section and noticed a lot of gingerbread themed roms that i liked, i was wondering if they are all compatible with eachother or does it depend on something?

No, only roms for a specific phone will work. Others may work, but not very well. If you have a vibrant just stick with vibrant roms

thanks in addition to that im wondering why specific themes and mods only work for specific roms. i tried loading a gingerbread theme that said it was for jk6 and it looks like a need to reflash with odin because the phones stuck on the vibrant screen

Because ROMs are based on different leak versions. so, a JK2 based theme will most likely be compatible with most JK2 based ROMs, depending on what your trying to change it may or may not work with other versions (more like try at your own risk and find out)

Galaxy S "Variants"??
Ok, so you guys say only use vibrant roms with vibrant model phones? I have a Galaxy S Showcase (SCH-i500) and do not see ANY mention of a ROM that will work... is the Showcase (Cellular South) the same as the i9000? Fascinate? Epic? Vibrant? Captivate? Tab? NEED SOME GUIDANCE / REFERENCE FOR INTERCHANGEABLE MODELS PLEASE!!!!!!??????

I tried darky's for the i9000 and LOL it totally screwed up my phone it literally wiped out everything from dcim to entire internal storage to contacts and all....all but the sd card inwhich only has avatar lol big woop about that.....I was able to odin back to stock, took a few tries but none the less I recovered...lesson learned..,if its not for vibrant then its not for vibrant,period...

I'd be interested in this as well. Would be nice to boot a mostly stable gingerbread and switch to froyo for things that aren't 100% in the gingerbread rom.

You already have the option. Sombionix posted a Gingerbread that will install on your SD card so you can play with it. To get back to froyo you just need to flash a Froyo ROM. Kind of dual booting.
But as far as other things go: WP7 will likely never (ever) happen. And most devs will probably not take this on because it's just so much work about ~20 of restoring your apps via Titanium would solve.
Oh thanks for the tip, didn't know it installed on the internal sd card.

actually,
the NS port that Sombionix posted installs Gingerbread to /data/gingerbread. Doesn't install to your SD at all.
To get back to Froyo, all you need to do is ODIN a Voodoo kernel, and ban. back to the Froyo rom you already had. Seeing that it is still on your phone, all of your apps are already set up.
To go back to Ginger, just ODIN the ported ginger kernel from the package. (voodoo must be enabled 1st.
The only reason you have to ODIN is due to recovery not working on Ginger yet, however, I am working to resolve that, and will make a package you can just keep on your SD to be able to switch back and forth.
That's exactly what I'm waiting for! You rock!

I think you might be in the wrong section. Do you have the I9000?
If you in fact DO have a vibrant, I wouldn't recommend flashing that. The only CM that I know of is the beta. Still buggy.
Just check out the development threads. All the roms you need right there.

Well i have a vibrant tmobile and im trying to get this rom

If you dont recommend this rom can you point me out to a good 2.2.1 rom like cyanogen
As of now, there isn't quite a stable 2.2.1 out there. Give it a little time. Jellette is working on it and will probably have something out soon. Also 2.3 is still on the hot plate.
Check out team whiskeys Nero, or masters axura, or jellette's goodies.

I tried 3 separate kernels from different Samsung Galaxy-S phones (2.2.1 firmwares), all ended up in disasters. A couple times almost unrecoverable, for example I was able to get into download mode but Odin simply refused to connect or see the phone.
Needless to say I would not try again after 3 times. My luck can't hold out forever... YMMV, Your GSM Telus Fascinate may very well be much more compatible than my CDMA VZW Fascinate.

I am on darky's 9.3 final with a telus fascinate. I put it on before I realized that there was a vibrant edition and have been happily using the i9000 verision since 9.2.
In case you are curious:
Install darky's 9.1 (stupid i know but do it) using the telus kernel,
this step i dont know if it needs to be done but i did it anyway: Install rom configurator and install darky's 9.2 no modem no kernel.
Finally install 9.3 with speedmod kernel and modem straight from the configurator. Thats how i did it. I am using the i9000 speedmod kernel because i find the battery is amazing with speedmod on ext2.
I have tried the telus modem and the one that comes with darky's and i can not see a difference so I am sticking to the one that comes with the rom because my phone is working perfectly right now.
The vibrant edition may work and may save you from investing in buttonremapper But this is what works for me

Are custom roms reliable?

I love my fascinate. But there are some minor things I can't stand about the phone, mainly in how limited some options are and inability to remove some stock apps.
I tried a custom rom before, frakenclean I think, and while I loved the options it gave me I could not stand the way the phone would crash. The phone crashed almost daily. So I went back to the stock rom.
I miss the option to turn the 3g on and off, not having the Is there a reliable/stable rom that won't crash on me?
Custom roms have never had issues for me, you might have gotten a bad build. You should try out the gingerbread roms, they have the best performance and awesomeness you can get for our phones. If you want to stay on froyo try powerwashed or comrom.

Hi SageDieu,
I currently have a Telus Fascinate (SGH-T959D) which is running Stock Gingerbread + Rooted.
I'm wondering if you could point me in the right direction to where I can find custom gingerbread ROMs for my phone.
I have yet to feel comfortable with some of the ROM's I've looked at here in the forums.
Any suggestions?
Thanks!
The only rom thats not on xda is tsm pool party. You can find that on rootzwiki. Anyway imo powerwashed ed05 and com rom are the 2 most reliable roms. The gb roms still have a few minor issues, but most things have been fixed. I will be jumping over to pwgb soon as a voodoo kernal is released.

Thanks for the info. I took a look over at the 'rootzwiki' forum and I didn't see much that really indicates custom ROMS will work with my Fascinate.
Has anyone here that has a Telus Fascinate (SGH-T959D) running Stock Gingerbread updated there ROM or Kernel yet?
I would really like to get CWM back on my phone

I don't think there has ever been a custom rom created specifically using a Telus Fascinate rom as a base. Just custom kernels.
I'm currently running Darky's Rom 10.2 RE , flashable directly via odin/heimdall
It's GT-i9000 based Gingerbread 2.3.4 with some tweaks and it's own custom kernel. You get to choose from stock Gingerbread launcher or Touchwiz 4.5 (launcher from SGS II with some tweaks).
You need to do some tweaking to get your home/back button fixed, but I find its insignificant to the benefits of running a (i9000-based) custom rom. I've never had the phone crash on me from normal use, so I consider it very stable.
I think the OP and others are talking about the Verizon Fascinate which is completely different from our Telus Fascinate. There has been confusion in the past which resulted in bricked phones so please be careful when talking about custom roms for "Fascinate"

Crap I looked over the fact your telus... I have not seen any rom development for you. Take a peek at the dark'y rom that Japots suggested.

Refer to this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1004314
Basically, you need to mopdi melfas_touchkey.kl (may be different in MUIU) file in /system/usr/keylayout/ to assign the proper function (ie, HOME, SEARCH) to the proper button key.
The thread has a flashable zip, but I'd recommend using a root-capable file explorer (like Root Explorer [padi] or ES File Manager [free]) to edit the file.
I find custom roms very reliable. Sometime more reliable then stock roms.

[Q] questions about root and CMW

I have experience with rooting HTC devices and the HP touchpad, but i am a complete samsung noob. Things seem to work completely different with recovery on the this phone. I managed to get cwm recovery on the phone by flashing the entropy kernal (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1289460); however, it also says this is for gingerbread non-aosp roms only. Does that mean the CWM will not flash an ICS rom such as ICScrewed?
I am just generally confused cause on my other devices, kernals were always flashed using CMW, not the other way around. If someone can clear this up that would be amazing. I tried searching and looking in the stickies but i still can't find the info im looking for. thanks.
ICScrewed is not an ICS rom, its just themed that way.
We do not have working ICS yet, check the sticky.
You can flash one but audio will not work.

o ok, thanks. thats clears that part up thanks. I'm doing this for a friend but it turned out to be much more hassle than i was expecting. So any rom suggestions? I don't like the idea of pretending to have ICS much. I'm looking for a rom that's debloated, faster, more battery life, and has some visual polish. I'm not a huge fan of the stock touchwiz look.
UnNamed and ShoStock have a few themes and are by far the most stable I know of.
Or you can check i9100 roms and port them over or grab one that already is ported.
Read the Sticky thread thats in the General Section.
