so my question is... will all the existing ROMS and ports and some tweaks work on Gingerbread?
or just installing Gingerbread alone will make a better over all improvement of O1?

Hope the official update gets rid of that annoying LGMITS error and the SD card which randomly becomes unrecognized.
I also heard that Gingerbread should make power consumption more efficient compared to froyo (apparently the price to pay for being snappier than eclair).
Great news indeed.

Yeah, that LGMITS error. It annoyed me for a while, but suddenly it stopped popping up on my screen. Weird.
So you mean power consumption compensates for the touchscreen's accuracy? I just knew that now, seriously LOL. Hopefully that isn't the case with "our" Gingerbread update.

This just made my day ^____^ Guess I'll postpone using a custom ROM until Gingerbread.

Hope I made a right choice to choose OT.
Other than AWS and wifi calling support, I'd like to see flash support on future 2.3 update.

I thought there's already a Flash support for Optimus One....?

Apparently, the browser does not have the flash plug-in or it is disabled or inaccesible...
by the way >> you can enable plug-ins from the browser settings menu
oh.. and i think flash is really missing in the phone..

Im starting to love LG

I emailed LG Romania Support today and the answer was: "the P500 can't be upgraded to gingerbread because the processor and the memory will not allow runing the 2.3 version" )) So if LG Romania doesn't even know that their phone can be upgraded to 2.3 than they surely don't know when will this be possible

They are complete morons. Because of the memory ? This device has 512 mb, same as Nexus S, same as Desire, Nexus One, Galaxy S, all high-end devices.
I'm 100% positive that the upgrade will be released !

Will this update fix the sd card problem?

what's wrong with the sd card? i never had any problems with it.

I'm having trouble detecting the sd card.
I inserted a sandisk 4gb class 4 and my phone didn't recognized it (i got the 'SD card removed. Insert a new one.' notification). Then, i inserted back the original 2gb sd card from the box, but that notification is still there and it can't be recognized. But both my PC and a another android device (a galaxy tab) can detect it. So, i tried formatting both the 4gb and the original 2gb with the galaxy tab and inserted it to my O1 but nothing has changed. I tried updating to the official V10E firmware but it makes no differences. Any help please?

does our sga is capeble of getting the android 4.0 ice cream sadwich update or we have to be happy with gingerbred only???????????
Just wait for cm8.
We'd be the last family of devices to get ICS TBH if ever
I believe it has the chance of getting ICS but definetly not from Samsung. SGA has a very large amount of users and skillful developers who could make it happen.
We may have to be patient though.. Even Nexus S, which has the official support from Google, hasn't even recieved the upgrade yet. CMIIW.

They won't be pushing ICS to Nexus S when Prime hasn't even been out and ICS unveiled in Hong Kong on Wednesday.

Yeah.. Lame old marketing tactics lol.
By the way, I've seen some leaked videos of Prime and S running ICS and from there I could understand that even S wont have the exact same version of ICS the Prime will have... Well at least for the GUI.
Have a look at this.

couldnt agree more
If I had to choose I'd rather have a completely stable and optimized Gingerbread instead of an ICS. Stable meaning every feature working the way it should, like my wifi actually reconnecting after sleep.
The main advantages on ICS are:
1) dual core support and hardware accelerating
2) New UI.
Because neither of those are relevant to Galaxy Ace, I'm fine with Gingerbread.
But XDA developers are really fast and they will port ICS even if Samsung wouldn't.
but i have heard taht the update will be for 1 yr old devices i think galaxy ace is 1 yr old only...so we can get

Yeah maybe for some high-end devices that is..
And really, I wouldnt expect much from Samsung in the term of firmware updates.
Maybe we could just put our hope on a new ICS-based CM instead
google announced that it will be available for the first 18 months for existing phones...

im hoping it would come to our devices.
Yup there's a new agreement for companies to provide software updates till the 1 year or so is up. We're probably getting it but of course they will prioritize.
New version of OS is one of marketing tricks to lure people into buying new phones, I'm quite sure that we won't see ICS stock from Samsung, but nevermind, we have great developers, so just wait for CM 8 an' see

It'd really be pointless though. ICS is a much more optimised version of HC which should bring full SMP support through software, something that has gone begging for quite a while to take advantage of phones like the S2. Maybe they are adding GPU rendering as well. Another useless perk for the Ace as the GPU is ****.
Also, why bother porting ICS to ARMv6? It's a complete waste of resources when it's almost likely to provide little to no benefit.
My opinion at least. Don't get your hopes up for ICS/ICS-based CM8.
I know (SGA even don't have flash) but at least they'll take some interface tweaks and eyecandies

Best we may see is a theme.
And what about some battery improvements in ICS? Maybe the phone won 't go faster but battery life could be higher. Or am i wrong?

[Q] Jelly Bean Specs

So I was wondering about Android Jelly Bean, here are my phone specs:
512 MB ROM
256 MB RAM
CPU MTK6573 650MHz+ARM116-507MHz
Android 2.3.4
if there is anything more you need to know, I will reply, since i can't post outside links.
Now what i wanted to know is if my phone could support Android Jelly Bean, if it can, how can I install it.
I really hope that answers won't be something like "I don't know" or "you can't install it"
If anyone can help me, please do. Much appreciated.

Well... you can... as long as your device has a custom rom that run based on CM10... and a swap partition with at least 512 MB ram.
LG gt540 has the same specs and it can run ICS (dunno about JB).

If you're phones not popular enough chances are you won't be able to get jelly bean, purely because no developers have made a ROM for it.

You're right, I'm sorry. My phone name is X15i you can find it on Dhgate, just add this:

I thought considering that one android version can be installed on all sorts of phones the specs of my phone would be enough, since it doesn't have a company manufacturer (samsung, lg, etc.) but a Chinese phone. If they can install Android operating systems on other Chinese phones, I'm sure that there is a way for me to install another Android on my phone.
On a computer, when you install an OS, you don't look for manufacturers and developers, you look for hardware specifications. You can't install Windows 8 on a Pentium III and expect it to run smoothly, instead you put Windows 95.
The problem is I don't know whether JB is Win 8 or Win 95 and will my phone support it.
It all depends whether someone port jellybean to your device.
BTW which device do you own

CM10 is a custom after market firmware based on Android 4.1 It's basically JB with a lot of features and improvements. You can check if anyone has made it by using Google. Also it doesn't matter what company made the phone, but if no developer made a custom JB ROM for it then you're out of luck. With Android it's a bit different than with computers as far as OS installation goes. And for your swap question, the windows counterpart would be Page file.

When you install Windows on a PC you have access to multiple drivers (even generic ones) for all the hardware that comprises the PC, no driver then that piece of hardware won't function. An Android build includes the necessary "drivers" for a specific device so you need a build built specifically for your device for everything to work.
Your phone, by looking at specs would not support Jelly Bean. The processor isn't fast enough to run it very smooth in my opinion. As said before, swap partition (windows page file) would fix the RAM issue because JB would never be able to run on only 256MB. Look around on Google for a ROM for your phone but honestly, the most I see your phone running smoothly and without problem based off its specs is Gingerbread and MAYBE Honeycomb but that's it.

The specs aren't that bad to be honest. Its a dual core/CPU phone and there are single core 600MHz phones running ICS just fine.
RAM is definitely and issue although even with 256MB it should run okay provided you don't use too many apps. My old X8 runs ICS and JB decently with only 192MB usable RAM. And Thad bit about honeycomb is irrelevant seeing as its a tablet OS.
Have a look around on the Chinese forums, there should be a ROM lying around or at least instructions on how to root

Also it's impossible to run a Honeycomb ROM simply because there aren't any. Google never released the source for it.

No it got released along with ICS. One of our devs even managed to make a honeycomb ROM for the X8 lol.

Android aint like a pc you that can install any os. Android phones need os like ics or jellybean to be made by the phone manufacturer. If there's a dev for it, it can make a custom one like cm10,aokp, or muie, by hacking it, to run all hardware in phone.
Technically the stock honeycomb version is a ROM. Also, I know it's a tablet OS but I'm saying from a hardware specification perspective it would run it. And as said, source was released.

[Q] Need help understanding android

Hello folks, i'm new to this forum and new to the world of smartphones. own a windows phone but have an inquiry about android which i'm sure my genious brothers here will have an answer to. if i buy an android device that has android 2.3 gingerbread and is not upgradeable to version 4.0 ICS, will the apps work fine on the phone. i have the habit of using my phones for atleast 2 years. so if i'm using an android 2.3 version phone for the next 2 years, will the apps work on my phone? like they wont ask for update of the operating system of the phone?
like in Iphone you need to have the last ios to install and use instagram. is the same case with android too?

Google will be phasing out old versions of android, and developers may make the switch to newer android systems as well. Currently, about 60-80% or more of the apps currently can support Gingerbread, since Gingerbread devices make up 50% of android devices in the world. (More info here.) I figure, your phone could probably be supported for another year.
If you are clinging on to a phone for 2 years, get a good one! Most ICS Android devices are not too expensive. If your phone is a popularly branded one (Samsung, HTC, Motorola), and if you are willing to take risks, you might be able to upgrade the firmware in your machine, unofficially though.
Now let me type this out for you....
Every time Google releases a new os they release the platform sdk along with the actual source code.... Next developers download these and start building their apps.... Assume that you are a developer and you set the build sdk to a higher android version say ICS then if your phone is on gb you can't run it so it is at the helms of the developers to decide to support an older platform or not.... And forward compability is possible in android reverse compability may or may not work.... Any doubts post it below I would be happy to respond sir...

Should I buy a Galaxy Player?

I am looking for a device mainly as a VOIP device. I can get a Galaxy samsung S for around 70-100 around here average from craigslist but was also considering a player 4.0 or 5.0 - problem is the 4.0s go for a little bit more (right now I have a guy willing sell me his mint one for $85). However, I've seen the 5.0 for around 120-150 refurbished or like new used and really like 5" screen. What would you guys do?

Do you also want to use it in long trips or for GPS? If then the extra battery capacity from the galaxy player 5 suits the needs. Because honestly all of the following works perfectly well for a VOIP. Also if you are looking for development support from XDA you might consider the galaxy s. I would personally get the galaxy s because of the better custom roms and the capability of using a backup battery, which a player 5 cannot do

The Galaxy Player 4.0 is based on the Galaxy S1 so I'd go with the S1 because there are way more devs for it. Spec vs Spec the only thing in favor of the GP 4.0 is that it has duel stereo speakers and that's about it lol. The S1 has a much better screen and better camera. Now the 5.0 is a little different. It has of course the Screen Size, LED Flash, and a much bigger battery. Also it has a bit more devs, however it's screen is actually worse than the 4.0's and it uses a Yamaha DAC so it's sound quality isn't as nice as the GP4.0/S1 (whom use the same DAC). So like I said go for the S1 and be careful shopping on craiglist.
5.0 is worth it with reservations - old rom and no updates

hi
I've already bought a 5.0 from new and overall I'm reasonably impressed. It's a good vivid player with all the flexibility of Android to boot and a microSD card slot!.
I decided to purchase a separate music device rather than run my phone that way to avoid running my battery down...
However I would warn you that for the UK version that I bought, it seems to be stuck running Android 2.2.2 with no sign of an update any time this century. It's starting to be restrictive with regards to apps. Furthermore although some will tell you "just root it and update the rom"...I've yet to see a simple (for a noob) rooting process and set of roots that would at least match the stability of the stock version for the 5.0/4.0.
I've searched the fora and there's a lot of info to digest....
Did you try superoneclick?

Just some food for thought. I noticed that the Galaxy Player line is no longer available to buy, brand new, from Amazon (only third party sellers) and that Best Buy shows any of the players as "not available for shipping". I was curious what was going on and begin to find that it is possible the Galaxy Player line is being entirely discontinued. I hated to hear this, but think it is important to keep in mind as Dev support could become continuously smaller - it isn't large by any means at the moment.
If you are okay with the possibility of no support outside of forums, I would say to go for it. They are great devices as media players and even a type of 'wifi only' phone. Good luck with your decision!

I looked up kies mini and it seems they are device specific, I've installed kies regular and it says I'm on the latest firmware already.
I know I could try updating to 2.3 with Odin, and from what I understand that would be to the stock 2.3.5 that the US 5.0 Wi-Fi comes with. This is how: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3EYjIyVXRGM
I just don't know if it might break something, is there a big improvement to updating to gingerbread? Like how is the performance?

I know I could try updating to 2.3 with Odin, and from what I understand that would be to the stock 2.3.5 that the US 5.0 Wi-Fi comes with. This is how: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3EYjIyVXRGM
I just don't know if it might break something, is there a big improvement to updating to gingerbread? Like how is the performance?

uninstall Kies regular and try Kies mini. mini upgrades basically all the galaxy s products so it's safe to assume that it would work on the gp. plus it was mentioned by Samsung themselves in order to upgrade the galaxy players.
gingerbread is not exactly a huge improvement in terms of performance, but it gets way better app compatibility. for example you don't need to root your gp if you want to use the power button alternative if the button ever breaks. and it's a more appealing to the buyer's eyes.
um... that's all the differences I know of

I've just given it a go and kies mini isn't recognizing the device, if I connect it in mass storage mode it tells me to reconnect in kies mode, when I do that it just sits there completely unaware I have even plugged it in, while the computer makes the 'connect' sound followed shortly afterwards by the 'disconnect' sound.
Thanks for your help anyway

Ok. Well.......I might be beating a dead horse or something right now, but did you try installing the separate samsung drivers as well? They are on the Samsung website. Haha....I feel so nosy..

I ended up getting a mint Droid X for $45 after flashing ICS I was really satisfied with it as it seemed just as fast as my old G2x (that I killed trying to fix - so many probs and bad battery life)... however while battery life was decent 6 hours screen time, I decided to try a GB rom and its at 49% after 10 hours of almost continuous usage.... the phone, while not as powerful as the latest dual cores or even the galaxy S is very smooth and fits my needs... highly recommend anyone who is in my shoes to check out used phones to use as a VOIP cuz there's really good devices/deals out there!

In the menu of kies mini was an option to reinstall drivers I tried that but after leaving it for 20min at least it was still at 0% so I canceled it. Are the drivers on the Samsung website different? When I look at the support section for the YP-G70 it doesn't give any drivers.

If you want stable look for custom roms that are based off of stock, like Chip v1.5. These ones provide mostly, if not, all the features that are available for the default rom and provide extra features. Check this out for more details. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1720457

What about 4.2 or 4.3 from LG on our Phone...?

No one seems to talk about it... ? Does anyone know any time frame when we might get stock update?

Very few phones received more than one update, and a lot were never updated.
Doubtful that we will get an official update. LG never was the greatest with updates, as we saw with Jellybean for our device.

Not likely, given the relatively small user base of this phone on ATT, and the fact that it's now 2 generations back on terms of LG devices on ATT (OG pro and G2).

That sucks... The whole F'in purpose I bought into this phone was for the 2GB Ram + Quad core so that we can at-least get 2 updates.(2 versions of Android)

Of a norm LG doesn't provide constant updates. Take a look at how long it took us to even get JellyBean? The odds of us ever seeing a legit update to 4.3 are highly unlikely. As someone mentioned two whole other phones have come out since the time of the Optimus G.
Luckily our phone is powerful enough to support the 4.2, 4.3... and possibly whatever new versions may come out in recent time.
At the end of the day though, phone suppliers aren't making phones to last or constantly survive years from now. In the long run of things, they budget it that by the time your plan expires you'll likely upgrade phones.
When I got my LG Optimus GT540 (Donut - Android 1.6) in 2010 I got it with the assumption of regular updates. Boy was I disappointed. Currently I still have it as a spare in the worst case scenario I brick/destroy my Optimus G... and guess what? It is presently running on JellyBean[If memory serves...SlimBean ROM] with no major issues.

It's not a safe bet, for ANY phone, to count on more than one official android version update. Occasionally it happens, but not often. If you are counting on multiple updates, you have to be willing to get on custom ROMs.
With the exception of nexus devices.

Not going to happen officially . I bet lg already stopped working on are device in favor of the pro and g2

Samsung and HTC seems to fit this exception as well. In either case, I believe it's time to dump this phone, and get a Nexus 4 instead. Only $240 shipped for the 8GB version.

Why would you get the n4. Lgog has more to offer hardware wise and we can boot n4 kernels n Roms.

Also AT&T has a record of not releasing updates supplied to them by manufacturers. I know this from having a Dell Streak 5, and Sony X10.

How can we boot Nexus 4 ROMs? The only way to do it is to convert the Optimus G to a Nexus 4 last I checked. Same goes for kernels. My E971 has 32GB of internal storage, and everything else is the same as the Nexus 4, minus LTE support, which I don't use. The only downside with the Nexus 4 to me is the smaller internal storage, which OTG might fix, and the on screen navigation buttons.

My aosp kernels are n4 kernels with device specific fixes. The n4 kernel will still boot without the fixes but in the case of the e970 you loose captive buttons, sdcard and the volume buttons are backwards. The aosp Roms are all n4 sources with device specific changes. The changes are very minor. The changes are too support what are device has and the n4 doesn't. In theory ( don't do it ) you can flash anything in the n4 forums if you use an update script n binary from are phone.
Otg ain't 100% on the n4. Are micro USB lacks the pin to power a USB devices. The otg cable needs to be modified to supply power. I can easily add the changes for otg to are kernels but I don't have a otg cable for testing.
So what do you gain by going to the n4. I plan on being here for awhile. I can compile Roms if I like but choose not to. If I'm the last standing Dev then I will. I still got another 1yr+ before I'm eligible for an upgrade

Would you be able to figure out what in the flashing process break GPS for some devices/ROMS while others work? I have tried everything to fix it. GPS works great on some stock ROMs but not on any AOSP ones.

It's the efs partitions. Back them up when you gave working gps, and flash it when flashing a Rom breaks gps.

Did this already. I made sure my GPS was working and I was on fully stock because I had just got my phone when I made the Backup of the EFS. Still doesn't fix the GPS.
Also, It still doesn't explain the issue. The efs partition shouldn't just get corrupt unless there is an issue with the recovery and/or ROM being flashed.

I glad many dev's are are trying to port N4 roms and I'm thankful to them.. But it's Not the same as stock to be frank. there is always a compromise.. for e.g if something works.. something else doesn't. I can live without LTE but the main issue is lack of signal strength.. I tried every single radio out there... Same issue. I have even posted the pictures in some of the threads here comparing Stock vs ASOP signal strength, and This issue is not only for our device.. Its for all the devices. If your home/work is located in High signal area then you are fine, but for ppl like me where the signal is very low (on AOSP its zero) at home. NO AOSP Rom is go. Also look at the camera.. LG stock is better than AOSP (Many might agree some may not). These are few things which are a must for the phone.. As I told screw LTE but lack of signal? Anyway Its sad if they dont push another update for this beast of a phone.
The following PSA is brought to you by, "how not to brick you phone":
DO NOT FLASH N4 zips/roms/kernels
without changing the edify script so it uses by-name instead of flashing the boot partition by number. The nexus 4's boot partition # matches our rpm partition. Thus it'll hard brick it. If you adjust the script to use the by-name nomenclature then you are good to flash, minus the few features already discussed above.

Well that ain't very useful. I thought you meant it was like back with the Samsung Galaxy S and Samsung Galaxy S Captivate. All you had to do was flash a reoriented/Captivate kernel, thus you can run Samsung Galaxy S ROMs.
