Can this be implemented to the Streak? - Streak 5 Android Development

Hello all
I found something interesting http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=859419
Can this be implemented to the Streak?

Don't see why not
I'll try it and let you know.
edit: It seems your kernel needs to support some extra stuff and i have no idea whether steve's does or not. He might have to verify whether or not it will work.

Could we build 2.2 from source?

possible ?
Yes. I'm an Evo owner and compiled 2.2 for myself. Just download the source code and you have to modify a vendor tree (located in devices folder). I chose the Passion which is the Nexus One. Modify the vendor tree and bam, you can compile. Took me a bunch of tries for my Evo though and not everything works.
i have absolutly no idea how id go about doing this...
and everything doesnt need to work lol...
that will come if we can get one to boot its a start
luckily the post above is correct, its worth mentioning that there probably isnt a vendor tree for the streak... also worth mentioning that the OS could compile and be pretty useful, but we REALLY would need a kernel source from Dell (which they will HAVE to release to comply with the GPL) because we need a kernel intended for 2.1/2.2 because it interfaces with the hardware differently... so this can be hacked in, but its not really feasible to rewrite the drivers from scratch... wait till the 2.1 update, and Dell's kernel source for it, and 2.2 will be community supported well before Dell ever releases THAT update.
whhaaaaa?
What you think the time scale will be? Doesnt sound good
I was hoping xda cooks would be all over this...I have an hd2 and would say the streak beats it hands down for web browsing.
Have to agree on this nobody seems bothered to get 2.x on it maybe cos its only out in the uk at the moment but plenty of devs are from the uk ,? maybe it'll get more interest when it comes out in the usa.
i thought paul from modoca had a streak? I know he is a busy guy building roms for nexus? and/or desire?
we need to drum up support somehowl
we need kernel source compatible with 2.2
unless Dell have used generic components and I can't see that then it's not going to be a simple thing to do...
seriously, damn not good
I seen that a guy from modaco managed to get a Q&A will the Streak UI team and when asked about being updated to 2.2...they said this;
I can say that the team is busy working on the next release of Streak, and while I can't give specifics of what's in the release, I can say that getting Streak current with similar Android devices is high on our list.
So I hope they dont bork it with 2.1 instead
Few people works on new custom rom for it.

If they do its a quick 2. 2 port
once we have a 2. X kernel.

Im beginning to suspect a vanilla kernel may work, not that well maybe, but there's not that much different from the N1 and desire in the streak from what I can tell.
There the same except the internal sd and screen. And screen don't really matter as its same resolution. Could try the 2.2 kernel. Even if the internal sd doesn't work. Its to the same qual comm chipset

the kernel Dell are using is the Surf..
thats in the git. certainly a good place to start!
http://android.git.kernel.org/?p=platform/vendor/qcom/surf.git;a=summary
lazy dell...
so if we make a vendor...
from the surf and compile 2.2 .....
https://www.codeaurora.org/xwiki/bin/QAEP/
Have a play with that...
if I get a chance later I may do, otherwise it'll be later on this week, I haven't looked too closely, but I'm presuming it would also have the new HW 3d driver in there..
i wish somebody would do something with the streak coz at the moment its a doorstop, cant unlock it for a phone, cant use a decent rom on it coz there is none what a waste of £340

This is interesting - wish I knew what the hell it mean't ha !
Seriously though guys , good luck with this
Looks like there are some dell drivers after all. There is a dell_musiclibrary.so,
wonder if that is created by their music player apk..
I really need someone who knows their way around android to guide us through this, I'm learning fast but it's never fast enough!

Eyup, posted this on modaco, but will spread the love here
http://opensource.dell.com/releases/streak/
as of now its empty,
but they do have the Aero source available to peek at.
http://opensource.dell.com/releases/aero/1.5/
I've had a look, seems complete enough to build, but there's no references to proprietary stuff, whether that means its not able to build, or they havent used any I don't know.
without having an aero to build it for it's above my current level of knowledge to say whether it would work or not
That is great to know..
Hope they release it soon.
awesome, they need to get this up NOW!

[Q] Kernel?

As a n00b to the gTab, I have been doing a lot of research and experiments with the different ROMs available here trying to find what works best for me. My question is, why would I want to change the Kernel? What advantages does that have? I'm having an issue with my gTab not reconnecting the WiFi correctly when it comes out of sleep and wonder if a new Kernel would help.

Much like different ROMs have different features, so do different kernels. They just happen to be much lower level features that make up the core of the system. So it is very possible that a kernel change could change the behavior of your wifi issue. It might even replace it with something more... interesting... if you get my drift ;-)
I would carefully research the kernels you want to try and even ask the developers any questions you might have about their effect on the particular issues you have. Keep in mind that you may introduce new unexpected issues as well since we're talking about replacing the guts of the operating system.
I would love to know how to replace a kernel. I've done some looking, but see no clear instructions.
In general they can be installed like a ROM but you want to make sure by reading the developers specific information for their Kernel.

Development

Is there anything new going on in the development side? I havent seen much in the Dev section. Does anyone want to share what new projects they are working on?
most evs have developed what they can from what's available. Until Viewsonic, Nvidea, USMerchants, Google, or any other entity release something that can drastically change the way we Gtab, then there won't be anything else to develop. They may tweak a few things here and there, fix bugs, etc. etc. but as far as something "new" it will have to depend on VS et al.
When VS released their 1.2 bootloader, as it's become known, Roebeet made some new(er) romss based on previous builds (TNT Lite, Vegan-Tab, CM7). They aren't really "new" just updated versions of existing roms, to accomodate the new bootloader. (they are posted at another forum site)
There have been a few Kernel updates as well, but none based on the 1.2 bootloader (that I know of)
So, basically, the development section will be a bit on the quiet side until the developers are given something substantial to work with. All the roms we are using are based on something that was provided by VS et al., so until they release something, then there will be nothing to work with, besides what already exists (ie, tweaks bug fixes, etc)
Slower changes is fine with me. For once, I'd like to use my gtab for more than a couple weeks without flashing a new rom or kernel.
I've been turning to the CM7 for dev, as there is a lot of work going on for the Gtab there. It's officially supported, runs pershoot's kernel, and gets regular updates.

WOW!!!!! Where is the press release? I can't believe Viewsonic is supporting cyanogenmod. This could mean Honeycomb is in the near future!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
(yes, sarcasm intended)
Well that sucks. I thought someone would want to make a nicely themed ROM or continue to integrate new features into their ROMs. Vanilla ROMs are cool but sometimes its nice to see a pimped out ROM.
Several themes for roms out there. I was commenting on the officially supported
Oh ya, I dont think Viewsonic wants to support anything officially. Not even their own software let alone someone elses.

[Q] ITE Hardware Overclock Module Instead?

Good morning all!
I haven't received my viewpad 7 yet (it'll arrive tomorrow), but knowing my luck it will be hardware version 107 (I'm in Canada). So I've been doing a little research. I know the tj_styles' overclock kernel will not work with the ITE hardware, but how about something like this:
http://code.google.com/p/milestone-overclock/wiki/KernelModule
The link points to a motorola omap kernel module that sets the cpu frequencies at runtime. This means there is no need to have the kernel sources (or in this case the ITE driver sources). To quote from the wiki...
"The module has an interface in /proc/overclock/ that allows enabling and disabling of overclock in runtime without rebooting. It works by changing several parameters directly in kernel memory to fool both CPUfreq and its lowlevel OMAP driver."
Anyways... it has been a long time since I dev'd anything (think Commodore 64 and GEOS)... But I thought it interesting enough to point out. And maybe there is a dev out there able to tackle this. Or better yet, maybe there is a dev out there who can warn me off this. I'm gonna' give it a try... but I'm back to school next week (teacher, not student). We'll see how it goes.
any news on this?
This might be usefull. Only just now saw this post. I'll look into it, but it looks like there should be little risk in trying this yourself, as long as you have an idea of what you're doing.
NEW OC/UV Kernel
Hi!
There's a new kernel in the developement forum. But no ITE-Hardware support.
I have tried it but it doesn't work for me. What can we do next?
Any more news on this? anything to encourage ITE rom building would be great!
