[Q] Will Viewsonic ROMS work on Malata Zpad? - G Tablet Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

The Viewsonic is basicly a rebadged Malata Zpad, anyone know if the custom roms for the gTablet will work with the Malata Zpad?

They should be interchangable on the 512MB RAM v1 Malata devices. But I heard that the v2 (1GB RAM) has a different partition structure and might have issues.
The zPad firmware, for example, works without modification on the Gtablet as it's the exact same hardware. Rothnic cleans it up and removes some unneeded things in his zPad Clean mod, so its more palatable for those of us in the States.

I hope thats not the case with the 1GB Zpad as I've been able to get a deal on it $420US shipped. Might have to cancel the order.

Would repartitioning work?

I've been told that it does work, however you will only have access to 512MB of ram. One thing I would like to try is modifying the boot.img of TnT to support the extra 512MB. I know some of the zpad guys are interested in this.

Yes, I just recently recieved my Malata Zpad T2 with the 1gig ram.
I flashed mine using the Viewsonic Gtablet instruction. Firstly Clockworkmod V 08
and TNT lite 4.1.0 released today Jan 13th / 11 and It works flawlessly. Everything works perfect. I been tinkering with it for like 8 hours now, and cant find anything wrong. Extremely stable. And for the record, yes, the whole 1gig of Ram is used, not just the 512mb in above questioning. It is extremely fast, and solid.. If your wonderering whether to do it or not on your Zpad,... I would say yes do it.
This is where i got all the files and instruction i needed.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=865245

i wonder if that means we could theoretically open up the gtab and upgrade the ram to 1Gb?

good question, I bet you could...

In the teardown thread it was said that the ram is actually soldered onto the board so don't think it would be as simple as popping out a memory module and seating another like on a PC. I have no idea for sure because I'm not a hardware saavy cat, but if someone does figure it out there is no doubt in my mind that'll it'll be someone from this board

Hi.
Congrat on new tab. How about the screen? Its view angle look bad like gtab?
Thanks

I am a hardware guy and I can tell you that the ram is soldered onto the board but there are solder point for more chips so it would be possible but not something most people would be able to do.
Edit: Looking at the Malata ZPad I'd bet it's the same board with the missing things form the G-tab included

It missing bluetooth module.

I noticed with mine (zpad) that its viewed best when viewed up and down. (meaning, buttons are on bottom, zpad logo is to left, webcam on it is to right). However you can view it at any rotation of course. If I'm viewing it with the zpad logo on the bottom, and the buttons are on the right, it seems I pretty much have to look at it straight on. I believe that must be simular to what you mean or have experienced with the gtablet.
Nevertheless, its still very very good, and quite viewable. Based on the few other tablets I bought previous, this one really is bar none the best. Market is full and working, flash works, 3-d games work, movies are crisp, pictures are crisp. And did I mention the sound? WOW!

Does Malata Zpad T2 come with 3g module as an option?
Some places I find it for sale with no 3g and some other state with 3g.

The site I purchased my Zpad had 3G as an option I could add for some extra cash.
I bought it from:

GingerBread on Malata Zpad T2
Dear guys
I'm in trouble installing Gingerbread on my Malata Zpad T2
All Froyo ROM's I'm able to flash but I'm unlucky installing Gingerbread on this device.
I tried
- Cyanogenmod (bittrix-beta-06.43f-gb.zip)
- Vanilla GB ROM (gtab_full_vanilla_system_2010_11_09.zip / update-aosp-Beta2-Harmony-signed.zip)
I'm using CWM V 0.8 and CWM V3.0.0.6 always with same results.
First I wiped Data/Factory Reset / Cache Partition / dalvik Cache
installed the FW via install zip from sdcard
everything works well.
It's flashing all files and indicates FW successfully installed
Please reboot
Rebooting this device it starts and I can see the malata sign with Tegra II or Nvidia Tegra 2 logo.
Thats all??
I also tried to install other Gingerbread kernel's but with the same result.
Did anybody has an idea what's going wrong and how to install Gingerbread to this Malata Zpad T2
Thanx in advance

Yes it's same for me ! The last rom's working on my tab is vegan tab rom 5.11 !
If you find a solution, thanks to tell us

any updates here ?

yes i have installed the gtab.VEGAn.1.00.beta5.1.user.final.zip and works on zpad BUT with exception of 3G modem ( if you have it ).

Anyone have the new dual boot viewpad 10? I have one and loaded the New Update Andriod 2.2 for it but the Back key doesn't work. The wifi is not working correct.
Is there anyway to load drivers for this or is there other problems?
Thank you.
By the way I have opened mine up.
It now has 2GB Ram 64GB hard drive and soon built in GPS with Active patch Ant. You can also install the 3G modem if you like. All that is missing is the modem and Ant. Sims Card slot is there.
You make me want to sell my gtab and pick up one of these. Or just bite the bullet and give the gtab to the g/f and get a vpad for myself.

Couple of questions, my wife has a ViewPad 10:
- where did you get the Android 2.2 update? Was this from Viewsonic?
- do you know of a source for the mini-vga cable?
Thanks.

hmm... i'm surprised that there's actually a variant of 64GB SSD for this model because i could've sworn it only came w/ a 32GB SSD max built in for the VPad10... where'd you get your VPad10? also if memory serves... doesn't this tablet run on an intel pine trail processor and chipset (hence the win7 dual boot)? and where'd you get the froyo update? if i recall, current non ARM based processors only support up to android 1.6 (unless there's a ROM out there built from the ground up that runs on intel's hardware)

i don't think this was one of those frankenstein DIY upgrades since the VPad10 already comes w/ the specs mentioned
and while everything does sound great on paper, how's the battery life on it?

Thank you for your answer! Is your device rooted? Because only if it's rooted you can go to the folder where the file is. Or maybe you have the ROM? That will be the best way if you have the ROM to send it to me. Or to ask your reseller to send it to you? By the way where did you buy it from? That might help me to obtain the original firmware.
Thanks

How is the folder named? Let me look in to that first, i don't think the site allows direct company names that sell this product.
I'm surprised about the low info here on this tablet.
Maybe new info i found will help, it's also known as superpad.
And I'm sure it's no fake. Google it. I will not advertise here.

Who the hell gives names to this devices .. ? Flytouch 5 ? zomg!
this is the ONLY company that has the Infotmic SoC available for implementing into tablets:
http://www.shuoying.com/global/index.asp
http://www.shuoying.com/global/Product.asp?/3.html (tablet page)
I Know that, cause I personally visited the head of Infotmic SoC design (Shenzhen) and ShuoYing CEO, also in Shenzhen (Infotmic HQ is from Shanghai)
If there is any other tablet with "Flytouch" design, then they are tempered from the original tablet made by Shuoying, or they are so wild that it is really a mystery of it's origin.
My guess is that those are regular FT2 (since all have the same CPU) tweaked by some wild chinese people, Kernel and OS, and RAM/ROM
not to all - dont buy tablets from companies that dont show up in 1-2 hours search. You'll end up with tablet that someone assembled by hand and a screwdriver, and most probably extremely bad OS.

Use only Z4 to root the yospad. Can someone leave link for fw flash for yospad

I think your completely right there.
I use it for a remote control know.
Thanks for the input btw.
Digital Zoro - im sorry for your failed tablet device.
On the other hand - I find the FT2 design to be the best tablet design ever. it obviously lacks the fine finish, and better materials, but - 10 inch wide tablet, with every god damn port there is - pure win.
I saw the "actual" FT3 in Infotmic Shenzhen, and it looks awesome - capacitive screen, ARM Cortex A8 based infotmic SoC (about time dudes, you are sooo late) .. dont know why isnt out yet, cause all those named "FT3" dont have same specs as the one I saw.

My Flytouch 5
The design is not really bad and i like that it has the rj-45 port.
The screen I find bad. No multitouch and slow reaction when touched.
Its thick and heavy to hold.
Flytouch 5 should have GPS build in, but it doesn't.
The Flytouch 2 3 4 5 are all the same design. On one moment it lost the second mini sd slot.
Is this only with the fake ones?
No, they are all faulty. the forementioned Shuoying company makes crapy tablets
I took for bussines 30 units the first time around, and I still have 6 broken units. others had flaws, mostly of how they are assembled - everything is sticking out, and such. USB/SD slots die more often than you could imagine.
buttons are the biggest problem - they are not glued in & soldered - they are JUST soldered. so the only thing that holds them into place is Tin (Sn) and we all know how that is firm and solid
oh, there is also a screen problem - there are 3 types of ZIF wire-to-board connector types for the screen, so if you ever need a screen replacement - dont even think about it.
the best assembled chinese tablet is from a company Utopia, in my expirience. you can find them by the name "imx515" A8 or A10 tablet. it turns out that solutions for assemble is better than most of the branded companies.

[Q] gen8 vs gen9 comparison. others. rom issues?

Hi,
I've almost made decision to buy 101 gen8 for my girlfriend as a first (budget) tablet, but just wanted to ask for your opinion. Especially for specific issues/limitations that gen8 might have as opposed to G9.
I had 101 G9 for a couple of days for testing and we liked it. But it's a more expensive option and not really offering that much more I think. To sum up differences:
1. On G8 real-use speed (processor) should be fine, not much worse than G9 I hope
2. screen not much worse according to reviews ? (apart from the angles which are told to be much worse)
3. one less usb port in G8, not a big issue (the G8 port should work with 3G stick too I presume)
4. no GPS in G9, not that needed here too
5. android version and ram available- and this might be an issue as only ICS might be available and not officially I guess -what are the clear advantages of honeycomb over froyo? I still don't know..
6. flash support- on G9 it generally worked in websites, on gen8 I'll have to mess with it I guess and the result will still be worse ? Is it a different flash version or just less working due to system ?
7. firmware/rom issues - I read in some posts there were some unresolved issues couple of months ago in G8. What is the current state of buggy-ness there considering newest updates? :/
8. anything else? battery performance looks to be about the same..
Thanks
G9 is much better, at least for me...
I had a 101 Gen8 for about 1 Year, and now I have a Gen9 80, and for me it is much better :
- G9 CPU has 2 Cores, G8 only 1
- Screen is much better
- My USB Host Port on G8 was broken after 1 Month, this happens a lot (read Forum), 3G on G8 works if you install UrukDroid, not in Stock Rom (Drivers missing)
- All G9 has GPS
- Android 3.2.1 is better for tablet, and in real Live it's true
- On my G8 101, I never had Deep Sleep, that means my Battery drains fast in Standby. That was the biggest Issue for me and the reason why I changed.
On G9 I have Deep Sleep
Have Fun...
Nicusasch
yep, I saw these reports about usb. does it mean the hardware just stopped working ? what about your experiences of the warranty service of Archos ?
regarding the deep sleep I saw that in 2.4... (I think) firmware update it was finally working, or not ?
with new gen8 firmware
the Archos 3g dongle working on 101 gen8
yes the USB Host stops working, nothing happens on plug in USB Device.
My Last G8 Firmware was 2.4.80, and with this no Deep Sleep.
Remark : with the Cyanogen Mod from AOS, deep sleep is working, but in the Beta there are other Issues.
For a Month ago I decided to contact Archos Support about my two Issues (USB and Deep Sleep), I wrote the an Email and no arnswer until today
My Lucky was that I bought it by Amazon, I send the Device to Amazon and after 3 Days I became the Full Money Back. Since this, I am a big Fan from Amazon
With this Money I bought my new Gen 9 80...

usb died on my 101 as well. I mainly use it for surfing, so haven't sent in for warranty support yet. To get an RMA for your device it is best to call, as they are very slow responding to mail.
Screen on Gen 9 is way better than Gen 8 101. Also, unless rooted, there is a limit on the apps partition in Gen 8, so if you want to install a lot of apps and don't want to root, you may run up against this. I am not a heavy apps user, but I did run up against this limitation. No apps limitation, in gen 9.
Also, more RAM on Gen 9. Browser on Gen 8 frequently shuts down if you have too many pages open.
The gen 8 is still a good device for the money, but does have some limitations. Btw, I have the Gen 9 80, not the 101
OK can you just clarify what's the situation with flash support on gen8 ? is it working fine on websites after installing/upgrading to what is needed ?

Flash 10.3 works best on my gen8. However it is very stuttery when trying to play video from amazon. Flash 11 is worse. I am using flash 11 on my gen 9 and movies play much smoother.
You tube app on gen8 works fine.
You might look at http://forum.archosfans.com/index.php.
Now I'm confused. there's a problem with availibility locally with 101 gen8 and I found out about arnova 10 g2 (or 10b g2 which seems only different externally and weighs more) - these have 1ghz ARM like 101 but 512mb are told to be generally fast with 2.3stock and can play full hd
also may have better screen (IPS?). downsides are lack of bt and hdmi, but these are not that needed in my case
Not sure about battery life, not much detailed reviews on 10 G2 found
(Concerning emails to archos) Just send the mail twice, or 3 times and they will answer quickly, at least that's my experience with contacting them...

Did you see it in real ? I'd suggest to try to see all models running before taking a decision. G2 is IPS, but I've seen one and it appeared poor quality to me, certainly not equivalent to Samsung/Motorola or even Acer
I didn't have the 101 gen8 at the same time to compare, but in my memory they feels about the same quality.
my personal feeling regarding screen quality is: Gen9 > 70 Gen 8 > 101 Gen8, Arnova G2.
Regarding processing power, don't take ARM and GHZ value as a criteria. All of them are ARM, and GPU / # of cores / SOC (I'd say in this order for Android) are more interesting criteria.
Memory is a very important criteria, 512 MB memory is good, the 256 of Gen8s are a bit low.

This tablet has a 'T' icon on the lower left corner of the screen. I have no knowledge of Android but would it be possible to install a 'clean' version of Android to remove the Tesco link? If so, would it still recognise the GPS which is the primary reason for wanting this tablet ?
TIA Paul
Just bought one myself. Had a few HTC phones, tinkered with my first windows ROM (old version) with xda guides so have come looking for a guide to rooting. But not much when searching for hudl so my guess is to start there.
Sent from my Hudl HT7S3 using xda app-developers app
Modaco has a bit of activity in relation to these (including rooting guides) - have a look over there

Pop over to Modaco and get the edited systemui. It has removed the T icon.
You can also find CWM there

HI John,
I'm probably late to the party, but the instructions for flashing my custom ROM are linked from here: https://github.com/remay/tmf-hudl/wiki If you're still having problems with it then start a discussion here: https://github.com/remay/tmf-hudl/discussions

THanks Rob, I did find a link somewhere and managed to re-flash the tablet eventually, I think I got a bit confused over the instructions, but someone sorted me out.
Thank you for the info.
Take care and stay safe.

Hi,
In case anyone is looking for clear instructions on how to overcome the problem after a factory reset of the Tesco Hudl 1 & 2 you will find them here (works for Hudl 2 as well). Use a date between 27 June 2019 and 26 June 2020 :
HUDL bricked after factory reset and how to fix it - Hey Munky!
I did a factory reset on my HUDL and bricked it. Here's a quick step-by-step guide on how to unbrick it after a factory reset.
www.heymunky.co.uk
Or the same with pictures but remember to use a date between 27 June 2019 and 26 June 2020 :
Rob's stuff - Hudl - Fix
Update 23 May 2023: This mechanism for recovery of a factory reset Hudl 1 no longer works. Due to the Tesco server at https://device.tesco.mobile.com/ no longer responding correctly to requests this technique no longer works and will fail after Step 18. As far as I know my Custom ROM is now the
rob.themayfamily.me.uk
(If this date solution ever fails then another option is to create a new user in the settings menu and reboot into it.)
Post if it works for you
