This is an automated nooter file to streamline the rooting process for the NookColor. This has been tested by myself and others.
Thanks To: pokey9000 for nooter, Mistar Muffin for Market and GTalk Fix, clockworx for the hacked framework.jar used to get androidID, mastapsi for testing and coding, lewellyn for coding, [mbm] for ABI Fix, Suteru for the new custom Boot Animation,Hotaru for the Gingerbread keyboard, rpollard00 for DroidX keyboard with bigger font, bpk for Soft Keys, Ben74 for NookColor Tools which enables Non Market Installs, Freenode's #nookcolor chat for dealing with my crap and checking my code.
Please Note: If I'm using your app within AutoNooter and you'd like it removed please send me a PM stating so and I will do so for future versions.
DO NOT USE THIS IF YOU ARE 1.0.0
There are a few bugs before I can release 3.x.x that need to be worked out.
This is the only officially supported AutoNooter by those working on AN
Changes:
Added: Gingerbread Keyboard.
Deleted: YouTube.apk from /system/app
Update: Busybox has whoami
Update: Installs Soft Keys 3.0.0
What it does:
Installs su and Superuser.apk
Installs Busybox
Installs Softkeys 3.0.0
Installs NookColor Tools (To Enable Non-Market Installs)
Installs Calendar and Calculator.
Installs Android Market, Gmail, Youtube
Enable Multi-touch for Android Apps
Enables Live Wallpapers
Enables Android Market and Gmail.
App Auto Install (Open up NooterFiles from sdcard drop in /data/app)
Still Needs:
Custom Kernel to display something while working.
How to Use:
Before you begin:
* To update to 1.0.1 you must do a complete wipe.
* You must update to 1.0.1 to use AutoNooter 2.12.25 Instructions Here.
1 You must already have a registered NOOKcolor
2 You must have a Gmail/Youtube linked Account. IF you used a Gmail account for B&N Registration you should use that one for this process.
3 You must either have dd (Linux) or WinImage (Windows) software.
4 You must have an external microSDCard reader or this will not work. Do NOT use the NC.
5 You must have enough intelligence to follow instructions.
Let's get started:
1 Download Auto-Nooter from here: auto-nooter-2-12-25.img.zip
2 Linux: Unzip and use dd if=auto-nooter-2-12-25.img of=/dev/sdcard
2 Windows: Unzip and use WinImage to "Restore Virtual Hard Disk Image" to your SDcard.
2 Windows Alternative: https://launchpad.net/win32-image-writer/+download
3 Unplug your NOOKcolor from computer. (If Plugged in.)
4 Insert AutoNooter SDcard into your NOOKcolor.
5 Plug the USB cable into your computer and your NOOKcolor. (This will boot up the NOOKcolor.)
6 Your NookColor will reboot when it's done.
That was the hard part, now to the simple stuff.
7 Upon boot unlock your screen.
8 At the Android Welcome Screen skip Sign In.
9 Enable Location Services when given the option.
10 Connect to Wifi and launch Youtube from "Extras".
11 Click the Menu button (The one RIGHT of the Up Arrow).
12 Select "My Channel" and Login using your Gmail Account.
13 Exit Youtube and Launch Gmail from "Extras".
14 Sync your Gmail Account and Exit. (If it fails to sync that is fine.)
15 Open up Market and Accept Terms and Service.
If you made it this far your nook should be successfully Rooted. Go Download an App to make sure.
16 Enable Non-Market Installs by running the NookColor Tools App.
17 If your Youtube fails to launch Uninstall and Reinstall Youtube from /data/app
18 Go to Settings > Device Info > SdCard > UnMount > Format
Complete Wipe:
1 8 Failed Boots > Wipes /system
2 Factory Reset > Wipes /data
You must do both of these to completely wipe clean your NOOKcolor.
Is it safe to try this after already having done Nooter 0.2?
The manual market install hasn't done the trick for me. Every time I have to restage the thing, if I'm not at home, I have to run out and find a wi-fi point to re-register it (argh).
I've had no ill effects from running this over an already nootered system with Market already fully functioning.
Link broken? Not finding it.
Never mind. Got it. You've got an extra j on the end BTW
I already have the market hack working but I don't have calendar and live wallpapers and some other stuff listed.
So just to be extra clear, this is save to just install over what I have already?
EDIT: WOW, this worked really WELL! I didn't mess up my already done hacks
And a little surprise in in store! It has the NEW market installed!
EDIT: Never mind, tired.
I'll be your guinea pig...will try it now.
Thanks for pointing out the extra j. Took it out.
While you're at it, you might as well include the ADHOC fix...

Wow. I've got an Android setup wizard. Should I run through it? I haven't seen this before on the NC.
"Learn how to use your LogicPD Zoom2"
Ohs you can try, but it should fail at "sign in" you want to skip it so that you can enable location.

I dunno. Some people don't tether and probably don't want to hassle switching back and forth. I think that one is kinda optional right now. Probably better off waiting for a good, permanent ad-hoc / infrastructure fix.

When installed, it defaults to the "stock" Infrastructure (AP) only wpa_supplicant that shipped with the NC. This simply gives them the option off switching to ADHOC mode if they need it.
I've been watching the progress on adhoc and it's currently unstable. As soon as there's a more stable adhoc solution it will most definitely be put in a future version.
Same server error as before for the Market.
"! Attention"
A server error has occurred. Retry, or cancel and return to the previous screen.
Anything else I should do?
This is the same thing that occurred with the manual Market enable process.
I'm convinced there's still something wrong with this whole process for some of us. I know there's 3-4 people getting the same server error as me for the market.
Should I try the manual editing of the packages.xml file?
You can always try to do a factory fallback then rerun autonooter or go look in freenode.net's #nookcolor, others have confirmed that Market works with this so there may be another issue someone in there can help you figure out.
There's been some suggestion that the androidID may not have been properly create, this may of happened if you messed with the db that holds it.

Yeah, there's a problem with the process still somehow. This is the same results as the manual process.
This is much easier though and faster to redo. Maybe they'll find the bug in the process for those of us that it doesn't work for.
EDIT: Just a note. The Auto-Nooter didn't change my packages.xml file to remove these lines:
<sigs count="n">
<cert index="n" />
</sigs>
Not sure if it was supposed to...but it's in the manual install instructions.
Well if you can come into the irc chat maybe someone there can help you figure out the issue and we can see about adding the fix the next version.
Thanks to auto-nooter I was able to get farther than I did before with nooter .2 version. However, I've got a new problem.
After rebooting the NookColor, it started the Android tutorial. Then, when I tried to set up my Google account, I couldn't click on the "Enter Account" option since I already have a Google account. When I tried the enter account in the future option, Android seemed to immediately crash on me and the NookColor went to the normal B/N interface.
I power cycled the NookColor. However, now it immediately goes into the B/N interface, and I never see Android.
Any ideas?
Robert
Well you were suppose to skip the entering info so that it'd ask you if you want to enable location. I'm not sure if it's possible or not to get SetupWizard running again. I don't know anyone that's tried either.
Awesome! Market finally works. Thanks a lot for this! It didn't even break my previous mods.

UPDATE - Version 1.1a - 4/27 - NOW WITH MORE ROOT!
I'm happy to announce that I now have a much improved version of apk-enabler all packaged up and ready to install. This version will work much better than the last one, and should provide much better application compatibility.
Version 1.1a:
Major update...
* Added Edify code to clean up old versions before installing or re-installing (either version)
* Updated su (version 2.3.6.1 - thanks dascud)
* Updated and relocated Superuser.apk (now lives in /data/app so updates will not complian about it being a "system application" anymore.)
* Added Zeam 2.9.2 to /data/app
* Added NookColorTools to /data/app
* Added SoftKeys 3.06 to /data/app (in case anyone needs this - some apps don't display the nook status bar properly.)
* Added latest busybox binary to /system/bin
* Added a crapload of symlinks to busybox functions in /system/xbin. Almost everything works now (grep, mount, etc) without having to run through busybox or toolbox. (thanks RileyGrant)
* I have attempted to perma-enable adb by setting the adb_enabled value in /data/data/com.android.providers.settings/databases/settings.db. Unfortunately it appears that this setting is ignored - at least when auto mounting is enabled. See notes below.
Notes:
Now that we have busybox and a current version of su, we now have what resembles a "normal" android shell environment. More apps should work with the updates, and we can now get a shell (then su) via adb. You can also run the Android Termainl app and su from there.
Also, since Zeam and SoftKeys now baked in, the first boot will now ask for your preference of default launchers (Home, SoftKeys, or Zeam.)
To get ADB working, you need to update your drivers, and play with settings in NookColorTools (development section) to enable USB debugging.
I have validated this install via a fresh install and over-top of existing installs. The only requirement is that the Nook has been turned on and registered. You can flash this over older versions, the script cleans up cruft from prior runs before installation.
Original Post:
So I went about fooling around with the stock 1.2 ROM, and like many I was frustrated by the lack of certain apps in the Nook app store. So here's a little work-around until we get a properly rooted solution in place:
What this hack does:
* Updates the SQLite Settings Database (data/data/com.android.providers.settings/databases/settings.db) with a hacked version, enabling the install_non_market_apps and adb_enabled settings.
* Installs a version of "su" in /bin and /xbin.
* Installs busybox to /system/bin and sets symlinks for most shell commands in /system/xbin
* Installs SuperUser.apk, SoftKeys_3.06.apk, NookColorTools_0.2.apk, and zeam-2.9.2.apk to /data/app (you may uninstall any of these if you wish.)
* With these in place, the stock browser (and other Market apps) are fully capable of downloading, launching, and installing .apk files of your choosing.
Is this safe? What if I brick my Nook?
The Nook Color bootloader will boot anything you throw at it. There are no signature checks anywhere, and even their own code is signed using test keys. If you get a bad flash or whatever, you can always boot your Clockwork SD card and restore from there. Remember - this is not a phone - there is no subsidy or baseband to protect. So, no there's no S-ON, locked boot loader, or any of that other silly crap the carriers do to screw their customers. You can flash forwards, backwards, sideways, whatever you want, as long as you can put it on an SD card.
Overall, this is no more dangerous than running a stock android device with the "Unknown Sources" setting enabled. Nothing is happening yet that is uncharacteristic of a "standard", vanilla android device.
That said, you should probably make a backup while you are running Clockwork, just to be on the extra-safe-side.
So, is this a full ROM that I can use to flash the 1.2 update?
No. This is a stand-alone update to 1.2 that overwrites one file and adds two others. You need to have 1.2 up and running in order to use this.
How to install...
First, you must have a microSD card already flashed with ClockworkMod. I'm not getting into that, you can find a good guide in this post:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=987735
(thanks fpga_guy)
NOTE - THIS WILL ERASE YOUR SD CARD - SO YOU MIGHT WANT TO PICK UP A CHEAP 2GB CARD FOR THIS.
* Once you have Clockwork set up, drop the attached zip in the root directory, and reboot your Nook Color. Once Clockwork is booted:
* Select "install zip from sdcard", then "choose zip from sdcard"
* Select "Yes - Install apk-enabler-1-1a-signed.zip". The install process will begin promptly.
* Once flashed, you will be prompted to Reboot,
* The Nook OS will almost certainly crash on the first reboot - I'm not sure why as of yet... If it does, hold the power button until the Nook powers off completely, then turn it back on. It should continue to boot normally after this point.
* Once you are back up, you can use the browser to download and run .APK files from anywhere. Some apps do not work, others do. Fortunately for us, Superuser.apk is one that does
As for launchers, you will not see your installed apps in the Extras area of the stock launcher - B&N is doing something shady here... Instead, you will need to install another Launcher. Zeam seems to work well, while ADW doesn't.
Once Zeam is installed, you can hit the "Home" button and select it as your Launcher (permanantly, if you like...) This is where you'll see all of your downloaded apps.
I have attached the flashable zip file, plus links to SuperUser.apk and Zeam. Use the built-in Nook browser to install both of these to your device. Once you download an APK file, tap the notificaiton in the lower left corner and select "Package Installer." The usual Android install screen will appear, and you know what to do from there...
What's not working?
Probably lots of things. I know ADW doesn't work, and the open source Terminal emulator doesn't either... Superuser.apk detects SU, which is a good thing. It isn't "full root access" until I hack /etc/fstab to mount /system r/w (probably tomorrow.) B&N hacked up the frameworks pretty bad for this, so there are probably lots of issues with non-market apps. However, this should open the door to someone willing to port Nookie Froyo (or something similar) over to the stock 1.2 ROM.
Credit where credit is due:
First, thanks to everyone on XDA, the official Nook forum, CyanogenMod, NookDevs, some kind folks on IRC who helped me sort out the partition layout, some helpful folks in this thread, and probably 20 others that I'm forgetting. This would not have been possible without your help.
Where do we go from here?
I suspect we will have something more like Autonooter in a day or so... However, this is a fully usable solution for the time being. You have su, busybox, Superuser, SoftKeys, and a Launcher.
Also, someone needs to look into getting side-loaded apps onto the home-screen and/or into the Extras screen. My fear is that B&N is checking signatures there - but hopefully I'm wrong on that one....

GApps don't work because framework.jar needs to be ported from another release. B&N broke it.
Alternative keyboards and things like that will probably break (again, due to dependancies that have been broken by B&N.)
Fortunately, B&N left enough of the package installer intact to allow us to get this far.
(feel free to add to this list, I'll only test what I personally plan to use.)

You're welcome. I'll look into Root Explorer - I'm not sure if it's a root issue or an issue with that software. Superuser thinks it has root, so I would think other apps would as well.
FYI /system is not mounted as read/write yet - perhaps that is what Root Explorer is complaining about?

Right. As I mentioned, I need to fix fstab to mount everything with read/write permissions (which I plan to do tomorrow.) This is really more of a work-around to get apps on the device. We will gain better control of it over time.

I'm guessing, very much likely, that you didn't include a Superuser.apk into /system/app which allows Root Explorer to request use of su in xbin. I'm going to try and get an AN version going for 1.2 in a day or two.

I didn't include it because it wasn't necessary. su is present, Superuser in apk form works. The only thing missing is to re-mount everything as rwxrwx---. That would satisfy the root explorer requirement without having to go the full autonooter route. For now, anwyay....
What you describe is simply a tweak to /etc/fsatb and possibly some changes here and there in some init scripts. It shouldn't be a difficult update, re-mounting file-systems isn't exactly the hardest thing to do in Linux.
The big headline here is "load apps from untrusted sources" - something that the Nook Color is physically incapable of doing out-of-the-box. In fact, their plan is exactly the opposite. Entangle the user with app purchases that they can't get anywhere else, and cannot transfer in or out of the Nook ecosystem. That problem is solved for now, and it should do what 90% of users want right out of the box.
We can discuss the next phase after evaluating the changes to frameworks and whatnot that will get Gapps and other crucial stuff up and running - that will prove to be a more difficult task than simply breaking in to the stock system. Judging by work that was done for previous iterations of Autonooter, there are enough framework changes that it's going to take some time to work out the details.
BTW, if anyone on that team would like to share information, please contact me and I'll see what I can do to help.
If there's no R/w toggle it means somethings wrong with Root Explorer, you should look into that problem as opposed to just fixing it by remounting system in init.rc this is not a good fix for something like this and shouldn't be acceptable. There's a reason the toggles built in and that's to help protect the /system folder.

Good work Ham. The apps used to show after rebooting under the Extras section(Now called Apps), they are not now after the framework butchering they did. However, I installed Applanet and all I had to do was a search on the device and there it was. It launched fine and downloaded apps no issue.
First, props to TeamWin, joel.bourquard, theintelligent, and maybe a few others I'm not aware of...
Second, these are Windows instructions. If you have another OS, you can open the batch files and type the commands inside (or paste them) one by one.
Third, keep in mind that the current temp root is NOT a full root even WHEN it is in place... so don't expect too much! This method has also been modified (by others) so that it does not "randomly" reset and it sticks until the next restart. As a result of how that works, however, even fewer apps recognize root with this method but some do!
Most of this is just other people's work: stuff from several different posts repackaged in a way that I found very easy to use. So I don't take credit for most of the contents, although I did modify the batch files to take care of a timing issue that was causing a fail on most machines. In the end, you should be able to use the attached prepare.bat file to prepare your phone once and then you can use root.bat after each reboot to restore temp root. Create a shortcut to root.bat on your desktop and you can just plug your phone in, click the icon, and you're (re)rooted in about 8 seconds.
The instructions are simple but I elaborate below to try to hit all the stumbling blocks. Basically you just run prepare.bat the first time you do this and from that point forward, you only need to run root.bat after every restart.
Here are the specific instructions:
THE FIRST TIME ONLY:
(1) Unzip contents of the attached ZIP to a folder you'll remember on your hard drive.
(2) Plug your phone in via USB and set it to "charge only" with "USB debugging" under "Settings", "Applications", "Development" turned on. It's best to do this after a fresh (full, not fast) boot. Your phone should be in this mode each time you connect it to root it. Trust me, if you've been using your phone for a while, reboot it first, then wait a few minutes for it to stabilize, THEN do this routine... saves a lot of headaches.
(3) Go to the folder where you unzipped the files in (1) and run prepare.bat. I prefer to do it in a DOS box but you should be able to just use Explorer and double click on the prepare.bat file.
(4) The first thing these batch files do is a check to make sure your computer can see the phone. If your phone isn't in the list, Ctrl-C and break out of the batch file. You'll have to correct the problem which will most likely be an issue with the HTC drivers. If your phone is not found, try these x64 drivers... or these if you're running a 32 bit OS. To install these, go to Control Panel and click on your Android device and do "Update Drivers" and browse to the location of the drivers you downloaded.
(5) Assuming your phone is on the list, everything should be ready to go. Press enter and the batch file will proceed and it will root your phone.
AFTER DOING THE ABOVE ONCE, AFTER EACH REBOOT:
(1) Attach phone and double click the root.bat file.
(2) Again, verify that your phone is on the list (proves your PC can see the phone). If so, press enter and the phone will be RErooted.
That's it! Works for me. Keep in mind that temp root is NOT a full root! Many apps will not run (won't see root) but that's just the nature of the current temp root. But some apps do work. Barnacle WiFi does for example: although sometimes it take two "start" presses to get it to connect as the first one sometimes produces errors. People say Titanium Backup and some other apps work: I haven't personally tested them. As temp root is really for dev and testing, test what you want and see if it works.
Hope this helps some of us to get a quick and easy temp root. If any issues are found, I'd be glad to modify this initial post and/or modify the batch files if any errors are found.
Mike

Really! Anyone out there? I expected to come back from lunch to find questions I needed to answer or maybe a suggested modification or two. This has been working for me for over 12 hours now. No restarts. No reverting to non-root. Barnacle Wifi Tether is still working. And the best thing is, if I have to restart the phone for some reason, I connect it to my computer, click, and 8 seconds later it is rooted again and I unplug it and go on my way.
Mike
can you run a wireless tethering app after temp root?
edit: see mikeyxda's post above this
I was hoping to be able to help some people with the Barnacle WiFi Tether app because a lot of people complain that they didn't get it to work and I suspect I got it to work with some combination of settings. Only problem is: I don't know how my Barnacle settings differ from those other people are using so I wanted to compare with others. Short on time right now but later I'll try to post my entire list of Barnacle settings. They work for me.
Edit: Oh Hell... I have a few minutes, here are my settings:

i ran batch files as OP directed, they run successfully, but when i go to start barnacle tether it doesn't have root. same for the "wifi tether for root" app. tried full reboots several times, no help.

Try making sure fast boot is turned off and then power the phone down and power it back up. Then use the root.bat to reroot. Might not work the first time.
For those having trouble with the driver links, try this link. It's kind of a convoluted mess with countdowns, etc. but seems like the files are there. I haven't verified them yet though.

What is it that isn't working: the rooting process itself or Barnacle? I was hoping to give enough feedback in this thread to get things working for the people who say "it doesn't work" because I've been watching other threads and most of these methods seem to be very inconsistent, meaning, they don't work for a lot of people. My intention was to find the kinks and get it working for the vast majority. If you can give me details like what you see during the process, whether any error messages display, and so on, we might be able to get a more reliable temp root.
Mike
Titanium backup is definitely not working with this.
So what's going on with this? Anyone got it to work?
OK, let's try this. This is a "cleaned up" version of a different method posted in another thread. Comes with 2 batch files. Run root-init the first time and then root-redo each time you restart after that. Let's see if this works better.
Mike
Ok...My guess is that people are scared and don't know exactly what they're flashing. Would you mind sharing the source of your find, Mike? If this does indeed work, I can't see people not using this method. HmMm
*EDIT* I found the source is from XHAUSX
*EDIT 2* IT WORKS!!
I was wondering if anyone has figured out a way to get HULU to work. Thanks!
For WebOS there is a work around, search from it. For CM7, just as simple as downloading the app

There was a recent work around after the patch failed, never tried it, never cared enough too.
As for CM7, why flash anything? There's an app. Granted you must be a subscriber..

Ahh never knew there was a fix for the fix.
Edit: Mind linking?
was working till the webOS upgrade to 3.0.4
this workaround was working until the new webos 3.0.4 the new update...the patch says ” could not find area to patch (unknown file version)
claptop dot com/2011/08/make-hulu-work-on-hp-touchpad/comment-page-1
I fixed hulu with a patch for 3.0.4...
It's an alpha, it's quick and dirty, but it works. Find the patch itself here:
forums DOT precentral DOT net/3218146-post139.html
For some reason I can't upload it here (maybe not enough posts or something).
Ok, after much annoyance and a couple webOS doctors, I think I FINALLY have an all-in-one fairly idiotproof patch...
WARNING!!!!!! If you have already done this patching process manually, this patch MAY NOT WORK! You may break your flash player if you run this patch after having performed the manual work and require a visit to the webOS doctor! DO NOT RUN THIS PATCH UNLESS YOUR TOUCHPAD IS COMPLETELY BACK TO STOCK ON IT'S USER AGENT AND FLASH IDENTIFIER STRING.
Please note, this is an ALPHA patch. It will likely throw an error or two but it should work. You should be able to run this patch and it will install the hulu user agent fix AND the flash fix without requiring a reboot. Again, this is an ALPHA patch and I am not responsible if you install it and it magically borks your touchpad. This will do nothing a webOS doctor won't fix, so gauge your willingness to test this patch on whether or not you'd be ok running a doctor if things go wrong.
To install:
Step one: Download the file attached to THIS post and EXTRACT (unzip) it to an easy to find spot (like your desktop).
Step two: "send" this file (tools > send file) using webosquickinstall to /media/internal
OR: put the touchpad into USB mode and drag/drop this EXTRACTED file to your touchpad (that will automatically put it in the /media/internal directory)
Step three: open a linux command line (tools > linux commandline) in webosquickinstall
OR: open a terminal window on the touchpad itself in xterm (you will need to install xecutah, xserver, and xterm from preware to do this).
Step four: type this exactly into the terminal window:
/media/internal/hulu
The device will very likely pop an error or two (again this is an ALPHA patch), but it should finish up without any real trouble in under 30 seconds. There is NO reboot required.
TADA, HULU works once more! Your app catalog is now broken.
If it's still not working (black screen on videos) you need to remove any adblocking patches you have (adblock or max blocker), delete cache/history/cookies in the browser, and reboot the touchpad. Now Hulu will work.
When you want to fix your app catalog so you can download new programs, go back to the linux command line again (in webosquickinstall) and type:
/media/internal/hulu uninstall.
This will break hulu and fix your app catalog. It'll take 30 seconds or less to complete and you're back in business.
The patch will stay on the device, so you can easily flip back and forth from hulu installed and uninstalled.
Perhaps he doesn't want to subscribe??
There are patches and fixes etc etc for other phones, and I'm sure ultimately its all the same.. its just like the WebOS packages.. Im sure you can apply it on the touchpad, but I haven't done it or anything.. this is to allow you to watch it within a browser of course.. app is great if you pay for it..
Ya Im a poor college kid so I was really wondering what was the latest and greatest modded flash zip file. There are a few million online and I didnt want to have to flash 20 before I got one that worked. In the end I was able to find one that works like a charm so thanks guys!
Hulu!
Uninstall what ever version of adobe flash (if any). Search Vgeezyflash 74 in google, it should be the first post on a "toshiba Thrive" forum. Download the modified adobe flash 11 .apk ("apk" is file for you noobs. Install, and reboot for good luck. Then open the android stock browser (i could never get it to work right on any other), change the user agent to IE6 and delete all cookies, etc. This process worked for me on the Touchpad and on my Nook Color.
or...just go to

it seems to work better if you click ignore...but still works either way
hulu on WebOS
takes a few tries but it will go eventually - I've tried either way as well - sometimes shows crash in the middle of the episode and you have to start over - as well as restarting the instance randomly - hit Menu and select TV - starts to spool and eventually will take you to start again
It should be noted that this is the current script, however, i am working on a cross platform java program that will do all of this for you
[NARS] is the Nook Automated Rooting System FOR MAC and LINUX
This program has been a WIP for myself for about a month, and I developed it so that people whom wanted to work with the adb development, and “bricking” of devices could quickly restore their devices to root. This program can also be used for a new user to, backup their programs, restore their programs, Root, Unroot, and Full restore.
Initializing ADB:
Download any app, and attempt to install it.
You can use this app if you need.
[*]Click on the Package Installer, and then a prompt will pop up asking if you want change the settings to allow 3rd party apps.
*DO NOT ENABLE 3RD PARTY IF YOU WISH TO ACCESS ADB*
I am working on a way to have it enabled by default.
[*]In the settings page you should see *2* USB Debugging modes.
*NOTE: if you disable automount, Debugging will maintain through unplugs
[*]Press them both and accept the prompt.
[*]PLUG IN YOUR DEVICE.
Note* You should see the Android Development icon on the bottom of the screen.
ADB will now be able to see your device. How ever you will need to restart the server before it sees it.
As it stands right now this scrip has 4 functions, and a video will be made for it tomorrow.
USE THIS SCRIPT AT YOUR OWN RISK!!!!!!!!
Using the script:
Download Start up script (Inside NARS):[/I][/B][/CENTER]
Check to see what operating system is running for which adb to used
[*] Inject the product id into the adb_usb.ini file.
[*] Start the adb server and look for devices.
[*] Verify that chosen devices is actually a Nook
[*] Load Menu

do me a favor and go into the NARS directory and type
Code:

also make sure you have adb debuging setup. To do this read the post in http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=19653967&postcount=3 Enableing adb Connection (eab1) part 4 through 8
I lost track of when I'd had the debug settings enabled. Between all my windows boxes, which all loaded a generic driver before I could use the custom drivers, and getting the linux box set for android development, I lost track of the last setting on the nook - I forgot to "measure twice and cut once" - I didn't go back to make sure debug was still enabled.
The reminder about the debug was the key.
Thanks.
Did not work on a mac running Lion. My nook is never detected. Clear, detailed instructions that are self-contained in the first post would be appreciated.
Not sure if any prep work is needed or if your script really should be this easy.
Thanks
UPDATE: YOU MUST COMPLETE THE FOLLOWING STEPS BEFORE BEGINNING NARS.
Cut and pasted from another t-r-i-c-k's thread at http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1358051.
You must complete the following step before using NARS:
Code:
On the NOOK
Disconnect from USB
Factory restore & initial setup
Browse to this:
[url]http://goo.gl/vTNpJ[/url]
Click on notifications center, wait for the file to finish downloading.
Press on downloaded go_launcher_ex_v2.66.apk file
Select Complete action using package installer
It should say "install blocked"
Press settings
Tick unknown sources (press ok)
Pick Development
Tick USB debugging (press ok)
Tick the other USB debugging further down
Untick Automount
Back/Back
Connect the Nook to the MAC. On the nook you should see "USB debugging connected" in notifications center
Now follow the instructions in post #1 of this thread.
After you have run that script, reboot your nook tablet (you can turn it off all the way by pressing and holding for a few seconds the power button. Then turn the nook tablet back on).
You need to make sure that you install golauncherex, which I forgot to do. Just find the .apk that you downloaded (go_launcher_ex_v2.66.apk in your notifications center on the nook) and then make sure to install it. This will give you a new homescreen with all of your regular apps.

Block OTA?
Does NARS block OTA like Indirect's script under Windows?
great script, fails on option7 install additional apk's
would turning this into a full linux distro with say puppylinux for modding/tweaking and development for NC be useful?
Loglud: I've rehosted these files on XDA.
http://devftp.xda-developers.com/files/AdamOutler/NookTablet/Market-8009011.apk
and
http://devftp.xda-developers.com/files/AdamOutler/NookTablet/NARS.tar.gz
I just put in some changes on my domain so;
APK:http://nook1.adamoutler.com
tar.gz:http://nook2.adamoutler.com
This should make it substantially easier for us who are restoring frequently.. now to try this sucker out.
All of the lines like this:
Code:
read -p "Press any key to exit..."
should be
Code:
read -n1 -p "Press any key to exit..."
So that it takes a single key press instead of "Enter"
Also, here's some more stuff to add http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1424811
Scripts are already written, you just need to modify them for ADB.
Thanks adam the script has been updated
Nice job devs. This nook is open like a brothel on payday!
I've been working on this for days and I'm on the verge of giving up and send my android tablet back to the retailer but, on the off chance that someone can help, I thought I'd post a plea for help.
I have been playing with my mother's birthday gift, an android tablet, in an attempt to put a bird watching app on it. I'm not used to this OS, so it took me a few days to get the hang of it, and then the wifi stopped working.
From a user perspective, you turn on the wifi and, after 20 seconds, it turns itself off and the tick disappears.
I decided to look a little further into the problem, as I didn't believe it was the hardware so soon, and used LauncherPro and SuperOneClick to root the tablet and ddms to see what was going on.
Anyway, I think I have tracked the issue to the wpa_supplicant file. I can load up the wifi interface from the command line:
insmod /system/lib/modules/8192cu.ko
busybox ifconfig wlan0 up
But when I ran the original wpa_supplicant in /system/bin/ it simply said "not found"
The file was there - I could copy it onto a usb stick and open it in a hex editor on my PC, but whatever I did, it would say "not found" if I tried to use it (chmod 777 as well).
When I got no joy from that, I started to look for alternative wpa_supplicants (there was no sign of a direct replacement for my disgo8100 2.3.3 version) and found the ad-hoc enabled ones.
I have tried a selection, but the one that comes closest to working (I mounted the system rw and replaced the original before mounting it ro again) insists on running as "wifi" (or 1010) when the original ran as "system" (or 1000).
This seems to mean that, although the supplicant runs happily, it doesn't create the /data/system/wpa_supplicant/wlan0 file in a form that other programs can access (wrong group/permissions, I think).
So, this has become very frustrating (but I've learned a lot about android, and how it differs from linux).
Can anyone provide an explanation for why the original file says "not found"? Could it be corrupt? If so, could someone provide a replacement from the disgo 8100? Could it be relying on a library that's not there?
What about the ad-hoc version I have? Can I force it to run as system.system instead of wifi? Am I wasting my time and should try to get disgo to provide a whole replacement rom (they have an update apk, but I believe you need to connect to the Internet to do an OTA update, which I can't).
As I said, I'm ready to send this tablet back, but I hate to admit defeat!! Any help would be gratefully received.
Cheers.
Never mind. Made some progress with the ad-hoc supplicant in this thread:
http://www.freaktab.com/showthread....pa_supplicant-file&p=3600&viewfull=1#post3600
Disgo 8100 Rooting
On the basis that there doesn't seem to be much information about the Disgo 8100, I thought I would post my findings.
I initially tried z4root, universalandroot and gingerbreak, but none of these worked. However, I didn't understand that I needed (or how) to enable USB debugging.
Once I did, I installed LauncherPro-0.8.6.apk and configured a shortcut to the development tab, which let me enable the USB debugging option.
I then downloaded android-sdk_r18-windows and modified the android_winusb.inf file by inserting the following at the end of the [Google.NTx86] and [Google.NTamd64] sections:
;Disgo8100
%SingleAdbInterface% = USB_Install, USB\VID_18D1&PID_1F00
%CompositeAdbInterface% = USB_Install, USB\VID_18D1&PID_1F00&MI_00
When I plugged in the Disgo 8100, windows XP asked for drivers and I pointed it to the edited .inf file so that they could be installed and the disgo was recognised.
I then used SuperOneClickv2.3.3-ShortFuse on the PC to root the tablet - it all worked perfectly and reported success.
Installing term.apk got me a terminal emulator and I could su into root. Hopefully you can get yours rooted, too.
Disgo 8100 Android Market/Vending/Google Play
Whilst I managed to root the tablet, I couldn't get any form of the vending system to work.
I got the play dot google dot com site to recognise my tablet as a T-Mobile Samsung Nexus S using the information in this thread:
http://www.techknow.t0xic.nl/forum/index.php?topic=770.0
But market 2.3.6, 3.4.4 and the latest Google Play all fail with various errors (although I noticed that play only [email protected] out when the wireless is enabled - the others may do the same).
I have taken a log capture of google play failing using ddms and will look through it.
By the way, grabbing the hwver for this tablet gives:
console=ttySAC3,115200 androidboot.mode=normal mem=512M hwver=81.1.0.0 mtdparts=imapx200:[email protected](ramdisk),[email protected](kernel),[email protected](resv),[email protected](system),[email protected](userdata),[email protected](cache),[email protected](Local-disk),[email protected](panic) androidboot.mode=normal
Google Play working on Disgo 8100
Drawing this one to a close, in case anyone is interested:
I have Google Play installed and working. I downloaded com.android.vending-3.5.15.apk from the link in this thread:
http://www.theandroidsoul.com/download-google-play-store-apk-3-5-15/
I renamed it "Vending.apk" (the capitalisation may be important, not sure), mounted /system as rw (mount -o rw,remount -t yaffs2 /dev/block/mtdblock3 /system) and copied it into /system/app. I changed permissions to "666".
I cleared the data/cache from the YouTube application and deleted YouTube.apk from /system/app (because it kept locking up) and replaced it with signedy244.apk (renamed as YouTube.apk) from http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1529715 (the WifiHD version).
Rebooting the tablet, I connected to the WiFi and ran YouTube (in order to confirm my gmail account), which worked fine, and then Google Play, which (to my amazement) worked fine too.
Hope yours does too
Excellent thread! Wish I could thank you but I don't seem to have a Thanks button. Anyway, do you mind if I ask a couple of questions re. rooting the 8100:
1) Was your tablet running Android 2.3.3, kernel 2.6.35.7, build number GRI40?
2) Could you explain in a bit more detail what you did when you "configured a shortcut to the development tab"?

i. Press ok
You should now have a desktop icon that lets you turn on USB debugging.
Enjoy
Thanks. Everything worked as you describe except the signedy244 version of YouTube. Whenever I launch it I get an error message "There was a problem with the network [400]". Searching on the net, it seems a lot of people are seeing this error and there may have been an update to the app which isn't in the signedy version. Are you still able to run it?

Yep, didn't have an issue - dropped it into the app folder, chmod and rebooted; worked first time and tested it a few times. The file I downloaded was 2,554,313 bytes, in case you want to check.
FYI, the issue I was having with the YouTube app was that it was making requests to the server with "restriction=ZH" in the uri. The server was replying with a HTML 400 error (bad request) because ZH is a language code, not a country code. Anyway, I've patched the app further to remove the restriction parameter from the request. I've posted details in the YouTubeHD thread (about half-way down page 36) if you're interested.
