[Q] Accessing files on Internal Memory of Soft Bricked Phone? - Vibrant Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Greetings,
I have two Vibrants - one I bought from TMobile (and running stock everything), and one I later bought on eBay (running Froyo thanks to TeamWhiskey). I bought the second phone so that I could mess around with flashing ROMs and be able to brick a phone without it mattering. Hah.
Last night, for no reason I can discern, my stock TMobile Vibrant phone spontaneously soft bricked itself. My eBay test phone is fine.
I don't hugely care WHY the Tmobile phone bricked itself, but what I do care about are the pictures that are on the internal storage area.
I used Odin last night to flash in T959UVJI6.tar (but I did NOT use the 512.pit file). One of the posts I read said that doing so should fix a soft brick, without messing up the internal user storage area where pictures are located. No change - when I power on the Tmobile phone it hangs at the Galaxy S logo and then goes black.
Does anyone have any suggestions of how to access the internal storage area of a soft bricked Vibrant? And/or, can someone explain or point me at an explanation of what impact using a PIT file (vs not) and checking the "reformat" box in Odin (vs not) will have on the internal storage area? I don't care about overwriting the apps - I am just hoping there is some way to pull off the pictures or unbrick the phone WITHOUT deleting them.
Many thanks!

Wrong section..probably going to get flamed. Odin again with the pit file and you still wont lose pics and stuff. But next time...Q and A section...not being a ****, but that's where you ask all your questions.

Thanks for the reply. Is there some way I can move my post to the Q&A section? Or is that something only a Mod can do?
Also, do I check the reformat box or leave it unchecked?
Thanks again.

No need to reformat.
That's only for special occasions, really. And yeah, as far as I've seen, only mods can move posts.

yeah i would also like to know to that. the other day i deleted the 3d gallery app apk odex files because it was annoying the hell out of me with it's referenced folders - i tried clearing the default folder and but it was still showing random pictures from the shutdown folder and where ever else - so what did i do? i backed up the apk and odex file then deleted them from the system folder. rebooted w/o any issues - then i tried installing the apk... nothing - kept giving me a failed app install notification. i tried this 3-4 times then gave up. at this point i restored the apk/odex file to the system folder and rebooted the phone - nothing... gets past the galaxy s animation screen then screen goes black... nothing....

tried multiple reboot and keeps getting to the same black screen of doom - the other odd thing is windows do recognize it after it gets past the galaxy s boot screen and into the blank screen when i check in the device manager

ADB pull /sdcard/"whatever u have on ur phone"
Learn ADB
Reading is Fundemental

I'd also like to know if there are anyways to access the internal memory of a soft bricked phone. I know I can use ODIN, but I could fix the problem right now sans computer or USB if Clockwork recovery could access my sd card; I flashed a new kernal on stock JI6 and apparently needed to to flash a backsupport.zip first.
So, I don't have a cable with me, so can't use ODIN, clockwork recovery doesn't restore kernals and doesn't access the SD so... I'm screwed until I get home (not a huge deal). Alternatively, I could also not get clockwork to USB mount so I don't think that works either.

lol thanks man. but i also tried that. adb can't recognize it - and i found out it's the hard lock t-mobile version where doing the three button power up does not get you into the recover screen. unless i read that wrong? lol

Update: I used Odin again, this time with both the TAR and the PIT file. Same result as last time. Odin appears to have completed copying everything over successfully, but upon reboot, I still get the soft-brick Galaxy S that doesn't go away.
I didn't try ADB earlier because all the posts/various docs I read thus far seemed to imply that ADB needed a normally functioning phone - not one that got stuck at the Galaxy S logo. I was wrong.
Here's what I did, hope it helps someone else. [Commands below assume you're using windows, and want to copy the entire contents of the internal SD memory (called "/sdcard") on your PC that you created (e.g., "c:\sdcard"]
1. Install ADB
2. Plug in soft-bricked phone and power on
3. Run command prompt and navigate to the directory where adb.exe is located. In my case, it was C:\Program Files (x86)\Android\android-sdk-windows\platform-tools.
4. From the command prompt:
adb pull /sdcard c:/sdcard
NOTE: the c:/ slash should be as shown - not c:\ as you would normally type under Windows.
392 seconds later, I had all 8G of photos on my PC.
I still don't know why the stupid phone won't boot properly, but now I don't care and can blast everything away. Thanks to everyone who contributed. Next time I'll be sure to post in Q&A instead.

[Q] Just Rooted, Now trying to downgrade cannot get into recovery please help

I just currently opened my box fresh out and installed z4root to root it... Sucess!
Now im trying to downgrade as i am "supposed" to according to this thread.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1036956
This is what is in my about screen under settings so you know what version ect i have http://img546.imageshack.us/img546/1476/20110427032325.jpg
from the aforementioned thread i downloaded the 4349_Downgrade.zip and placed it on my sd card... Renamed it update.zip and closed usb connection, and then powered off and powered up first pressing and holding the "+" on the volume rocker on the top of the tab. and then pressing power.. When i say "+" i mean Volume + witch is on the top left of the tab closest to the right in the direction of the search home menu and back keys...
When im holding this combo of buttons the screen boots up after a second or two says recovery key detected or whatever in the top left for a few seconds and then goes to the g tablet white screen... THen it shows a box with a downarrow on it and a progress bar for a few moments and then shuts off and reboots into the homescreen.......
I read in this forum a topic how the guy experienced the same results but turned out he was holding the Volume - key... I made certian i wasent doing what he did and literally just held the Volume + key on the right edge with the tip of my nail and held power... Same results..
I have tried with the program root explorer going into the file manager... (Why is there a file called sdcard2?? never seen that before) i go into /sdcard find the update.zip i put from the renamed 4349 file and then back up to the "/" dir and mount as r/w and paste the update.zip in there then mount as r/o back out to home power off.. i repeate the aforementioned process and still the excat same thing...
The origonal update that was put on there when i first put in my newly formated fat32 sd card i deleted.. i have searched and search and have no idea what is wrong or how to fix this... Certianly i couldnt be the only one with this issue?
Please help, im just killing time sitting here waiting for help lol.... Thanks..
My end result is im trying to get CWM 08 on there and a great and stable rom witch i choose that RC1 of vegan.. Unless u know of a better one. And once this is all done is there a good kernal i should be flashing? Why and how do i do it.?
Thank you in advance..
1) The downgrade is only necessary if you were on 4349 to begin with.
2) what you described is exactly what should happen in stock recovery for 3588 and older.
3) No... it is not exactly what others have said about holding the wrong volume key because when you do hold the wrong one the screen goes black after a few seconds.
4) SDCARD is your internal storage. SDCARD2 is the mount point for your external (MicroSD Card) storage.
5) It sounds like nothing is wrong...
6) Install CWM... http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=865245
Ooook
The thread i mentioned in my first post the first link if u click it the title of tje topic reads
[STICKY] [ATTENTION] - 3991 and 4349+ VIEWSONIC-LOCKED BOOTLOADER INFO here
Also it has a link to a pic of my about phone so cant u tell from that?
I am lost i did excatly to a T as described in the tutorial in step 6 in your reply and im getting the same thing i hold down volume + it says recovery key detected for a few secs in goes to gtablet screen and flashes to that down with a down arrow.....
What am i missing? Surely i dont have the only tablet with this problem..
Yes, I can... Your TAP UI version is 3391... LOWER than what you are trying to downgrade to. So you don't need to. You are seeing exactly what is supposed to happen with the version you have. This is the normal behavior for that version.
The only thing you are missing is the knowledge that nothing is wrong...

There is nothing wrong with your tablet.....[mod edit]

Then why can i not flash CWM? I went to your link tried both internal and sd files mounting on "/" and on "/sdcard" /update.zip or /recovery.zip in either folder and im still getting the same issue when i hold Volume + and power...
I cannot get CWM and a Rom on there.

From what i gather from that link is that i am to take the files insides cwmod_microsd.zip witch are update.zip and recovery folder that houses command and physically take the microsd card out and mount on my computer witch is technicly SDCARD2 and place those files in that root directly... and then the power down insert card and vol up and power.....
I am getting the same issue same box and same nothing.
Most likely because you aren't following the directions. Take some time to learn at least the basics about your tablet. Then read the instructions again.
you can do it on either the internal or external. It depends on what the line in the command file says. Once you boot once whether sucessful or not the command file is deleted. Your making this harder than it is
Then what am i missing? I got this tablet yesterday at 2 pm and stayed up till 3 am trying to get CWM on it!
I cant imagine what im missing, ive read dozens of posts tried atleast 15 times putting either the downgrade or cwm sdcard update files in the internet "/" or "/sdcard" or "/sdcard2"
And yes i noticed that it deletes the update and recovery folder if i drop it in /sdcard2 or "/", ill put the files there either directly to sd card from the computer or thru root explorer and when i hit vol + and power it does the same thing.
This has to be the most frustrating tablet/ android device ever!
The last time i had something this hard was when i bricked my iphone in early 09 and figured out i had to reload the ipw file via a brand new install of itunes from a virgin computer (that computer turned out to be me using the librarys lol)
so i just got both the internal and external cwm files from this post
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=865245
and put them in both /sdcard and /sdcard 2 for some reason when i used root explorer i noticed that for somereason in /sdcard2 there was a recovery/recovery/command so i pulles recovery to /sdcard2/recovery and pasted it there and deleted the other recovery folder.. re did the whole process and low and behold i was lookin at a CWMN screen! so... i have no idea, but if i ever meet the man who created the Vewsonic g tab ill kick him in the nuts.
Now i followed this guide
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=865245
and i mounted the usb put the Vegan Rc1 rom in the ROMS folder and choose zip from sd and installed... and im just stuck at the view sonic screen, so i powered off did a wipe data factory reset and wipe cache and then went to advanced and fix permissions... Then to choose install from sd card choose my vegan rom and installed then backed out to home and hit restart and again its been ten mins or so and im still staring at a viewsoniv screen still..... Is this normal or any more suggestions?
There is a fix but as much trouble as you had installing clockwork I'm suggesting you avoid that fix so I'm not even saying the name. Stick with froyo roms
Thats not very helpfull... Just please tell me what it is i can ifgure it out on my own, i obviously did with the CWM now i just cant get the rom installed for some reason i have a tablet that just boots to the view sonic screen at the moment
Just to update...
I fixed it. THanks for your help and no thanks for your sarcasim.
Was stuck at the viewsonic birds screen
So i did so more, searching... its now 5 am and figured out what nvflash is and
via this thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=861950
and making sure u extract EVERYTHING in all the zip files with the exception to the USB folder u drop in the nvflash folder as directed, because if u dont u will get a error when u run nvflash_gtablet.bat
Once that is complete follow this thread
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=865245
Word for word to install Vegan from stock... It may save a lot of confusion to just nvflash from stock and then drop the CWM recovery and update on the sd card and go that route..
Hope this helps and newbs...
See...the search function does work

[Q] Need some help with my galaxy s 2 situation?

So ive had my galaxy s 2 for a few months now, downloaded hundreds of songs, taken near a thousand photos, and yesterday the digitizer/lcd was shattered after being sat on. I can't replace this phone, and my parents who own the contract didn't purchase insurance for it. I am nearly broke, and the repair costs for this part is over 200$, and my parents refuse to pay for this. All I need to do is copy all of the files from my phone to my computer, but i cannot enable mass storage to access the pictures/music on the internal storage because the screen is out. Does anyone have an idea as to how I could fix this, or move the files off of the phone? A thousand thanks to whoever could help me in this/:
1) Questions belong in Q&A.
2) You can probably pull the files off your phone using ADB on your PC despite the screen being broken, as long as the phone boots.
I'm not going to tell you how to do this because it is detailed, somewhat complicated & is a very steep learning curve if you've never done it before. Do a Google search with "broken phone backup files with ADB" with XDA appended to your search terms & you should get a veritable mountain of results (I did).
Unfortunately, if you're looking for an easy way to do this, there isn't one. It's going to take a fair bit of work on your part if you really want those files.
Good luck.

Can't he just adb pull /sdcard/ ??? I've used adb pull /sdcard/DCIM/ to pull the whole dcim directory with all files in it.

Yep. Absolutely.
I was trying to convey that using ADB tends to be a bit of a stretch for n00bs & requires a bit of thought/reading/effort. Plenty of people find it difficult to get their head around it, and I'm not about to answer 20 questions about the process.

THAT'S whatcha get for not having a backup of your SD card, which is just like having a backup of your PC's hard drive.
But yeah, your ONLY option to the best of my knowledge is to do an adb pull:
adb pull /sdcard/ "where these quotes are you put the name of the folder where you want all that stuff offloaded to"
So since you didn't research before you screwed up then you will have to research now to learn how to use adb and how to enable it without the phone being on

As MB said, if you really want them it's going to be hard work.
3 other possible ways to do it:
1) Easiest way without adb - connect to your TV via HDMI/HML cable. You can now see your screen on the TV. If touch is somehow still working then copy the files from the internal card to an external one. If touch doesn't work, this won't help. Unless you already have Bluetooth on and have previously paired with a Bluetooth mouse.
2) Very messy way - If you've got a very good friend with an s2 who will allow you to swap motherboards over then copy your stuff to PC. Doubtful though.
3) Messy way - If you don't have an sd card or access to one, flash an ics rom like lpq with Odin. Yes I know you can't see the screen but boot into download mode using a jig or the 3 button method. Just hold them together for a while. Then flash once Odin detects the phone. You will lose your apps but music, pics etc will remain.
The reason I say ics is that when I was on it, it automatically displayed the sd cards on pc without me having to select / touch anything.
But I believe USB debugging may need to be activated, but not 100% sure. If not, your in luck.
If it does, connect via HDMI to your TV. That way you can see the screen and check the debugging option, assuming touch still works. Then connect to PC and copy/paste.

The best and efficient way is to flash a kernel with recovery that can mount your internal and external cards.
Just ask someone who uses similar kernel recovery to make note of the number of.key press and direction required to mount your SD via recovery and follow the same for your mobile and now you can copy all the files you wwant

You can try doing it in recovery. But you'll probably need to mount the internal SD card before you can pull from it.
1. boot to recovery
2. plug in your phone, start adb shell
3. su (if you don't have the "#" prompt)
4. mount /emmc (if you are interested in what is on the internal SD card. /sdcard is your external SD card while you're in recovery)
At this point, /emmc should show your internal SD contents. You should be able to exit from the adb shell and do an adb pull on /emmc/<whatever folder>
EDIT: BTW, I just tested this on my phone. I have CWM recovery installed via Siyah, turned USB debugging off, rebooted to recovery, and did all this, and was able to pull multiple files off my internal SD.
why dont u just buy the parts cheap off ebay that u need ?? and install them urself ... if not ... ull hav to do as every1 else has said and pull those files :|

Does adb on your computer see your device, since it's not fully booted?
Connect your tablet with USB cable.
On your PC, in the same folder as your adb files, open a command prompt in that location (shift+right click).
Type "adb devices" and see if yours come up as connected.
I doubt it will though, sounds like how I bricked my first prime, when I pushed a deodexed framework to it.
Might also want to try looking in the Dev section, under the how to unbrick your device thread, and see if you can attempt to revert to a different firmware via installing a blob file, but if you can't access your internal or external SD cards, to read/write the blob file (b/c your device won't fully boot) you may be SOL.
Next time unlock the boot loader first an make a nandroid backup, before messing w/ system files, that way you can easily restore. If your still in your 30 day window of purchase, you might consider a quick return/swap... would be the eaisest thing to do.

If you can access the internal card, its weird that adb can't see your device... oh well... try reverting to a earlier/different firmware via a blob. See thread in dev section.

[Q] Major Problem, Need Major Help!

Today I tried to flash the CyanogenMod 9 Nightly 06-30-12, coming from Build 35 of AOKP and after factory resetting and clearing Dalvik I went to install the zip and while flashing it I got a build-prop related error!
All of my NANDROIDS gave me a data error when flashing and now I am pretty f'd! I /really/ need to fix this ASAP but have no idea how.
-Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 Wifi-
-CWM 4-
On a second note, does anywhere know where I can get my screen replaced for cheap? I dropped my tab a few months back and the screen got MAJOR cracked, though it still does technically work (I still use the screen, it works but it's cracked is all...) and after calling Samsung and waiting for over 1 and a half hours they told me they wanted $150 to fix it, which if I recall is about half of what I payed for it anyway...
To be honest, I'd be lying if I said I was happy with Samsung over all.
I mean, bad customer support, the proprietary connection cable, and lack of official updates (along with the ugly TouchWiz that I'm not sure /who/ likes ) don't make me that happy...
Anyway, can anyone help me please?
Thanks in advance!
Update your recovery: http://droidbasement.com/db-blog/?p=2655
If you have a GT-P7510 (p4wifi), in this post are flashable zips (with your current recovery) of CWM and TWRP, in case you prefer this method: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=28051448&postcount=29
After that, flash your ROM like always.
Yeah, thanks, were it so easy. I fired up ODIN multiple times, no matter what, unsuccessful. Like always, my computer would not recognize my tablet. Yes, I have the bloody Samsung drivers, yes I've tried reinstalling them (several times in the last few months), yes I've tried using different USB ports! And what? Nothing. Nothing at all. For the last few months I have not been able to transfer movies/music to my tablet via file transfer and I can't even get the stupid odin download thing to work. To be honest, I really am pissed off with this broken pile of trash. Would trade it in for a similar tablet any time.
Did you try any of the flashable zips for a new recovery?
About the USB, it sounds like a different problem, but for the file transfers, are you sure you have MTP selected? (answer #5 --> http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1642009 )
If you haven't tried it yet, you could use a different computer, another OS (some Linux distro and check that adb works), change the USB cable.
I can't use a flashable zip since I can't copy files onto the tablet >.>
Also, yes, for file transfers I /do/ have MTP selected always and it doesn't work eitherway.
Essentially, I am stuck with a $300+ ugly and broken thing that I can only use as a paperweight for the huge mess I call my desk. Yay.
>Rage sidenote; Samsung, go take the money I payed for **** and shove it.
And I guess you don't have your old ROM (AOKP build 35) in your tab.
Try with adb (in recovery), but if you can't get a working USB connection (using other computers or OS), maybe there's something physically wrong with your tablet.
No, I don't. I'm stupid enough to delete the ROM zip after flashing it to save space on the tablet...
How do I do this ADB thing? I've heard of it before alot but never used it or looked into it...
Read this: for windows -> http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1387527 , for Ubuntu -> http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=921169
After everything is installed, boot your tablet into recovery and try running in your command line application (CMD for windows):
adb devices
If it shows that a device (and ID number and the actual state, e.g. recovery) is connected, your golden!
If you have another android device, try it too, to be sure that is working.
To transfer a file the command is
adb push /path/to/file /path/in/tablet
In windows I guess is something like this:
adb push C:\path\to\file /path/in/tablet
so I'd do something like
adb push C:\ADB\CWM-5.5.0.4-p4wifi.zip mnt/sdcard/ ?
Im dling the ADB files right now
adb push C:\ADB\CWM-5.5.0.4-p4wifi.zip /mnt/sdcard/
You need the slash at the star and end of the path of the tablet.
While installing PdaNet it failed, said it couldnt connect through to the device or w/e
Also,I don't recall having ADB on when I had the tablet. I might've but I don't think I kept debugging on for the general time...
This is so frustrating >.>
I'm not sure about that error in PdaNet, I can help you with adb but I don't use Windows, so there's things I can't test.
If you didn't select ADB debugging in your ROM it doesn't matter, you're doing this from recovery.
BTW, do you have other android device?
adb seems to be working and copying, but I can't find the file in Recovery while doing choose a zip to apply!
Yes, I have an LG Optimus V on Virgin Mobile running tdm's AMAZING Quattrimus Alpha 10 on Ice Cream Sandwich/ Android 4.0.4
this is what I get
C:\Users\Mikoyan Gurevich\Desktop\LG Drivers>adb devices
List of devices attached
43C800340009517 recovery
C:\Users\Mikoyan Gurevich\Desktop\LG Drivers>adb push C:\CWM-5.5.0.4-p4wifi.zip
43C800340009517\sdcard\download
1328 KB/s (4147569 bytes in 3.048s)
C:\Users\Mikoyan Gurevich\Desktop\LG Drivers>
If you connect your phone and execute
adb devices
What's the output?
If you do the same with your tablet, what's the output?
with the tablet it's
C:\Users\Mikoyan Gurevich\Desktop\LG Drivers>adb devices
List of devices attached
43C800340009517 recovery
with my phone it doesn't wanna show up in Recovery or not.... Hmm.
Well, it shows fine, then you should be able to transfer the files
First, in your recovery, go through the steps to install some zip file, but just go as far as selecting the directory, then go back
Now in your PC try running something like this, change your path in windows:
adb push C:\CWM-5.5.0.4-p4wifi.zip /sdcard/
The in your recovery, select install and should show there. The thing is that most likely the sdcard wasn't mounted in your tab
Edit, to mount your sdcard in recovery do: mounts and storage > mount /sdcard > Go back
The do the transfer in your PC.
Hmm
While I was holding it to my gut, pushing the end of the cable into my stomach (It was the only way to get it to be recognized) I fooled around and went into download mode, hoping that on the contrary I could do that, turn it off, and when I went back into Recovery it would be there when it finally said the cable WAS connected and then I rushed to open Odin and wrote it through, and it frickin' wrote CWM v5 right on and it worked, I'll be damned!
Maple, I can not thank you enough for helping me with this, I am in great debt.
You're welcome, I'm glad it worked. Knowing how to use adb is really useful. And now you know that something is wrong with your cable.
Or in the connector pins or w/e of the tablet... The cable works fine for charging though....
You are my savior, bro.

[Q] Android Crash on boot and red exclamation mark

Hello,
Last night, I tried to modify the Screen DPI on my tablet ASD Digital MID 162... After the device restart, splash screen not ending... I reset my build.prop to the default value, and make a wipe cache with Adb and instead of write wipe /cache, I write wipe only... And my device don't boot and I can't use adb shell... The error is : "Permission denied (13)"
Someonee can help me ? Please ><
(Sorry for my bad english, I'm french)
How did you modify the DPI exactly?
Through an app?
Editing the build.prop?
Laughing at you while eating Jellybeans
Sounds like a messed up build prop and the device is bricked..
Yes I've modify the DPI in build.prop file...
What can I do for repair the boot ?
One help ?
Gonna have to reflash. You pretty much wiped your device so you will need to reinstall the os
Wayne Tech S-III
I know that, I have to reinstall the OS.. But I don't have recovery mod on my tablet... The only one I have it's an recovery stock (I think, I'm not sure).. I can do "adb ls/", "adb pull and push" , that's all... One idea ?
[I've tried to push a shell in /system/bin in recovery mode, but I've got a error (permission denied), I want to push a shell for execute "flash_image" tools with an new OS .img file for solve the problem ]
I've had similar problems with my myTouch when I've done things it didn't like. Providing that you can boot to the stock recovery that gives you the options to reboot or apply update then your almost saved. Because if that's the case then ya can
copy the custom recovery.zip file over to the root of your sdcard (I used a computer for that as when I killed my phone it wouldn't boot past sock recovery or boot-looping)
rename it to update.zip then boot into stock recovery,
apply the update from sd and your device should, hopefully, temporarily start the custom recovery so that you can
wipe re-flash or restore from backup.
This all assumes that your device has a way for you to access the sdcard without your device.
Hope this helps/use at your own risk

I go to make a meditation on this idea... The problem is that I can't do anythings with the "stock recovery", It's just a screen with an open [dead] droid with red exclamation mark, and that's all. Nothing to do when I push one touch like Volume - or +, but when I boot with another key as Power Up, A black screen appeared, and it's all... (I want to show a photo with a screenshot, but I'm a new user, I can't :'( , I've no luck !!!! >< )

That is not recovery that is the kernel panic screen. Only option is an Odin install of stock

Ok so I read the post about kernel panic screen and agree mostly, however, I've seen the panic screen and gotten past it with a combo of volume + and power button at the same time, it then returns an error message on how recovery wasn't able to be read from its expected source, it then blanks out for a moment and boots the stock recovery, from there I apply the update.zip that I renamed and placed there with a computer, and then everything is good again.
Note: I don't have the specific device you do, or know the method that you usually used to use to boot into recovery.
Usually, its a combo of two or three buttons like on my htc product it's volume up and power button and on my Samsung its volume down and power and camera button. Note: when I do actually get into a custom recovery on my htc the power button then changes to turning the screen off and on instead of selecting things, which made it a hair pulling experience until I figured out that the directional pad on my device was the select button. (Moral of the story, power button sometimes controls the power to the screen, sometimes its used for selecting things, odd but be persistent and try combos because I thought my phone was killed till I hit the power button a second time and the screen came right back on.)
Odin should resolve the issue though for sure if fiddling around with your devices' buttons get to be frustrating, I just figure that any time I touch a computer to re-root my phone I've not done enough trouble shooting.
One other thing you can try is a targeted google search
Eg: 'solved [device name] [issue with device] site:[address of site to search]
So for example when I had a problem with my Samsung I used
'Solved epic 4g bootloop site:xda
Note I had to shorten the site as I'm not allowed just yet to post links but you'll want to include the .com
You can also replace the site: with similar: to search sites that are like xda with similar results.
What's the name and manufacture of your device? I'll see what I can dig up for you.

You could try it, though I wouldn't as internal hardware can differ inside identical devices, you could end up 'super' bricking your device which I don't think is a real term it just sounds less scary than 'muten' bricking. The phonomonon can be observed when someone flashes an epic 4g touch rom on to an epic 4g and things are never the same. Not saying that's the case just my perinoa speeking up here.
Actually I think there are guides floting around on how to make and scrub your own custom rom, maybe you could do a full copy of the working device though the usb debug bridge, scrub the user data and dependencies from the copy and push it to the not-yet working device... or you could blase the path allready well troden.

now when you're going to your sd card are you talking removable sd or internal?
Some devices don't have an external or its inaccessible,
other devices make it confusing by also having a partition on the internall memory labled sdcard which looks a lot like the sd card that can be un mounted and re mounted (I believe it to be confusing because the sdcard is also lables sdcard),
And yet others are really easy to spot because its the only thing labled and removeable as an sdcard
Any who if your talking about viewing your sdcard with prisice then likely what your viewing is the old contents of the card (what ever you had on it before this learning experieance snuck up on you) and I would treat it like pizza from last night's party. Meaning that the backed up apps could be used and there could very well be a good backup in there if you made one in the before time, but I wouldn't force my device to choke down leftovers when I could start anew.

You're Welcome; knew you weren't out of options.
Make sure to reroot from the start of what ever guide you used (as a gard against myself and the decisions I make I always keep my costom recovery flash zip for all my devices in the root of my sdcard and labled as update.zip or whatever the manufacture's recovery software by defaults to looking for. That way I can always reinstall if the device still turns on.) as you'll likely want to flash and mod with furver, I know I always do, keep a clear head and it should all work out.

Yeah just spent the last hour or so looking for asd mid 162 tablet in google, tried a few modifide search quaries, and such to no avail. Saw your question on a few other boards too. I've a feeling that you've run into the same problem with low popularity and lack of documentation. If you got any other discripters I can use for searching I'll be back on the case after work today

On recovery screen, is marked "SDK : MID-A13-Android4.2-V1.0-20130121"...
This tablet is the 9' inch model of ASD Digital 142...
Looks like that's the rom, could try flashing it again, just google the 'a13 9 inch tablet' and you'll find info on allwinner.
Happen to know what the ASD stands for? All I'm getting is autism results. (Which putting the word autism in this thread and adding '[minus sine]autism' might help)

I haven't understand...
I don't understand what you say... :/
Can you use easiest word or terms ? (If possible)
Sorry about that.
The first part of last post was discribing a search quary I used to find info on the rom you may be using. Looks like a cross platform compatible rom on the face of it but I'm still looking into it.
The second part of last post was stating that when I search for your devices' model 'asd digital' I'm getting results for human medical problems and not hardware related information. So I put the main word that was triggering that into this thread so that I can then search 'asd digital -autizem' and cut those results automaticly from the google search results.
Still working on this with you, just have split atention with trying to finish my first guide for android/linux dulebooting (unrelated to the issuess that curently plage you but still may be worth a look at when you've a system up and running again.)
At this point doing a restore from a working device's backup like you where saying might be the best bet on reviving the simi-bricked device, but I'll have to do some more reading before I really feel comfortible sugesting that you go though all that.
Now that you where able to boot a recovery screen; have you tried anything to get it back up and running? Such as restoring from a backup created after rooting the first time around?
