Ok, this thread is all about using Orb (or possibly other streaming media applications) on your Titan.
I currently use Orb 2.0 to stream all of my media (pictures, music, movies, videos, documents, etc) to my Titan. It works pretty well, but Windows Media player is the default player, and it's somewhat choppy and a resource hog. Some people have reported good results using TCPMP for playing media with Orb. I also use Pocket MVP for movies from my storage card, so I was wondering if that may be a good alternative as well.
My question is...what Codec is used by default to stream media?
What file associations do I need to change in TCPMP (or any other media player)?
What other codecs work, and how well (flash, etc.)
So far I have been unable to get Live TV to work through Orb, but I believe that may be a problem on the desktop app side.
With EVDO and RevA speeds getting better all the time, this is quickly going from a frustrating experiment (try watching a 2 hour movie with it stopping every 3 minutes to cache data)...to a very good replacement for having to store huge amounts of media using precious memory on your device.
I only have experience using TCPMP so I can't comment on Pocket MVP, but it works great and my be able to replace Pocket MVP for your sd card movies.
I use TCPMP v0.72 RC1 (attached below).
I check all the file type associations in TCPMP except picture files.
I set the "Manual A/V offset +/-" to -400 msec to fix A/V sync.
I change the video driver to "GDI".
Orb streams .asf files by default but if you're using WM6 or WM6.1 you'll need to copy the WM5 WMV9 codecs (also attached) to your pda's \Windows directory for Orb's .asf's to play. Be sure to restart TCPMP after this.
When TCPMP is used with the latest FlashVideoBundle (also attached) it also allows the playing of YouTube (and other) videos from pie. Just run the .cab from \My Documents, soft reset, and click a YouTube vid.
Not sure what your Orb live TV issue is, but remember only one application can have control of a capture card at a time.
Cool, thanks. I think that I figured out my TV issue. I set it up to use the ATI MPEG encoder thats built into my All-In-Wonder Video card, and it works. I'll just have to see how that works with Divix and MPEG movies, but I would think that it should be better since its a dedicated hardware encoder vs software.
I just began using Orb yesterday and it is great!!! My car stereo has built in bluetooth, so as long as Im in an EVDO area, I have access to my entire mp3 collection on the road now.
So, how well does the bluetooth work for you for stereo? With all of the bluetooth issues, I had put off buying a pair of stereo headphones....but there have definately been some improvements. At least now I can use Voice Command with some reliability
Well this looks very interesting as a solution. Does anyone have PIE remembering the password for ORB? I can not get my Titan PIE to remember the password no matter what I do, so I was thinking I need to switch to a different browser.

PocketStream Server:
This program comes with a GUI (although a bit choppy) for the phone, so all you need to do is connect to your computer with the app and it lists all your music/video files. It is streamed with TCPMP.
LobsterTunes:
This is what I use. Currently it only supports streaming music. It is a uPnP (Universal Plug&Play) app that can connect to any media server that supports uPnP (Orb, WMP11, TVersity). It auto sets up for you so you don't need to input anything. Just load it up and it will auto search for your computer networked sharing folder. The GUI is a lot faster than PocketStream, but it uses WMP as a backend to stream music (not changable).
Will Lobstertunes support the Internet Radio Stations under my ORB account, and thus stream them? I am all for trying something else that will work more efficiently with ORB (or any other pnp server software - as long as it works with all modalities of the pnp software).
wow... glad I came across this thread... lobster sounds EXACTLY what I was looking for... streaming media in car just isn't viable... the funny thing is, evdo is MUCH faster than streaming bandwidth but you never take advantage of that extra bandwidth when you're streaming...

Lobstertunes does support radio stations, but I'm not sure if it *sees* the ORB radio stations. Best thing to do would be to create a playlist with the radio station on it. I haven't tried it before because I use TCPMP for radio.

That's one thing I like about it. It always downloads half your available storage memory, so when it reaches that threshold, it will just overwrite previous files so you don't have to worry about wasting space.

and it looks pretty slick lol, but I'm not sure if it'll work on the Titan. Maybe I'll give it a try sometime tonight. I'm looking for something to replace LobsterTunes because although it works, it's still a little slow in my opinion.
I've been using ORB since the mogul came out and previously on my Treo 700wx.
I do have to admit my 4 year old has used it more than I have...the quality while traveling on the interstate is quite impressive.
I do have to try the tcpmp, maybe it will put it over the top.
My only failure with ORB 2.0 and the old version is neither will record for me, but I'm sure it's my fault.
orb is good... I like it.. I just wish there was a software front-end for it for the ppc..
I was really excited to get lobstertunes a try but it simply does not work on my device... not quite sure why but it crashes during the login process.

I found that error too, one way to fix it is to open up lobsterconfig.txt from within the install directory on your PPC and edit the line from /localtest=false to /localtest=true
Don't have the config file on your phone? There should be one in x:\program files\ElectricPocket\Lobster just edit the line and transfer the file to your PPC.

I wonder what program/codec pack I should use to be able to watch the films that I watch on my computer. On my PC I use Media Player Classic with K-lite codec pack and I can watch mostly all film formats, including .flv and stuff. On my HTC I can hardly watch anything. I currently have Core Media Player and Windows media Player on my phone. What do I miss?

I've used this for over a year now. It's not designed specifically for the Rose, but it works - that's all that matters!
Set the output resolution to VGA (640x480) and they will play fine. You can play the converted videos with HTC Album, no special codecs, or additional software required. I use it to converted .avi and .flv, but I'm sure it will convert a lot more than just those two formats
On my S710 (not tried on my S740) I use PocketTV Classic (free one) or TCPMP (Core Media Player) depending on the file type. Either is 100x better than Windows Media Player for any video I've tried but as grahamkdt pointed out you should use a utility to convert the source videos to a phone-friendly format: type (diff compression types require more or less CPU usage & may only work with certain players), resolution (pref match your screen res) and bit-rates that your media & phone can keep up so it's not choppy. Once you optimize video files & try a few players you should be able to get some pretty decent playback on a Rose considering I was able to on my old S710 which has a lot less power.

Cool thanks, hadn't seen that version.
As far as converting, why make your phone work harder than it has to & waste a ton of space on your storage card when you can just spend a few minutes converting videos to optimize for your phone? Especially with super fast computers these days it doesn't take a few seconds to a few minutes now. Of course you wouldn't convert in certain circumstances (like if the original wasn't very hi-res to start with) especially if you're only going to watch it once & delete to free up space but if you plan to keep it why not shrink it down and have it play even smoother? Besides they copy over usb or onto flash a lot faster when they're smaller. Plus not sure any phone can handle HD let alone blueray yet and who'd waste the space if it could.
haha yes i know bill, but in my case, unfortunately, i suffer from a serious case of laziness and procrastination so i just can't really be bothered with getting more programs and go through all the work to convert stuff, i dun even convert the ones that i want but can't watch on the mobile lol those that i want but can't i just watch them on the computer and curse my mobile with some nasty words

I have been reading alot of these forums and on the web.
Atm using Energy 26june 23569 with 2.10.50.28_2 (best for me).
Now i want to convert some VOB (Dvd) movies/files to the best suitable extention to play fullscreen on the HD2 (i can for example make .wmv with moviemaker).
The problem is, when i convert a file of 100MB to MP4 642*480 i CAN watch them fullscreen in the default CAMvidplayer (dunno how its named), without any problem .. but when i code a vid to 1.5gb mp4, it hangs on video, and only plays sound.
Hope someone can help me with this and give me a few good instructions/links to do so.
Dont know if this topic is in the right forum though, sorry if it isnt.

I always split fulllenght movies into 2 parts, cause file above 1.5g
tend to have hiccups every 5-10min (5sec freeze).
But i never have a full picture freeze.
What bitrate are you using?
What codec are you using?
I use h264 codec around 1600kb.
Get your hands on a program called Coreplayer.
And as for converting, try to convert to 800 by 480 as that is the devices resolution. Anything below will become choppy, above isn't bad but it may cause stuttering during playback.

I've sucessfully converted several videos and full length movies to mp4 to play on my hd2 using VLC, I noticed though it's important to make sure to select a maximum resolution of 720p. Still looks good on the screen, plays full screen and no stutters or freezes. Hope that helps.
I use "Any video Converter", for all my devices, here are a few reasons why I like it...
It's really easy to trim off the beginning and the ending of videos in the apps built in player to make the videos shorter and smaller.
Remember's my custom settings
Choose my Frame Rate, Video Bitrate, Video Framerate.
Many settings with the audio choices.
Can Place multiple files to convert one after the other.
It's free and they keep updating it regularly.
Video Conversion
I used "Format Factory" to convert some AVIs for the HD2. Not only do they play now they play in HTC's video player just like Transformers. Different settings and a few different resolutions and they all seem to play just fine...
"Format Factory" is free and a small download.

So I finally learned how to use NVFlash to get my device back to stock. Then I learned how to install Clockworkmod. Then I installed Vegan, after coming from TNT Lite. And overall I'm pretty happy. Except for the fact that nothing really seems to work
So here is what I need right now for my GTab to be of use to me in order of importance:
1) Streaming Audio from Shoutcast and bluetooth pairing to bluetooth speakers. Yes, I want this tablet to be my "Patio Media Player" and I'd like to get sound out to my bluetooth speakers. Alternatively I'd settle for streaming MP3's from my own PC where the mp3's reside.
2) Streaming video from Netflix, which I understand is in its infancy.
3) Streaming video from my home LAN, so it works like Air Video player. I'd spend $5 bucks on the PLEX application if it actually worked......does anyone know if it does, or is there a free solution to stream video.
Using Vegan, I can't get any of this to work. Winamp wont stream shoutcast, another app I tried just kept telling me "Broken Pipes" and so forth, no music was the result.
I can convert videos in handbrake so they play but thats not my ultimate goal, I want this device to stream music and at some point video.......can anyone help?
#2 -- there's a hack to get this to work, but it's not perfect. There is color banding issues, and I've heard that the fix also breaks the YouTube app. So it's an optional install, if needed.
#3 -- you'd want CIFS support. I though VEGAn had that buillt-in, but it's been so long I honestly don't remember anymore. The last major VEGAn update was early January, so keep that in mind. And the three guys who worked on it no longer update it (myself included).

Also, since you didn't comment on #1, and you are probably the GTab Guru of Guru's, does this mean I'm SOL for doing something as simple as streaming internet audio?
Nah, I'm not the guru of guru's -- I just know a few things so I wanted to pass on what I did know. I didn't respond on #1 because I don't have an answer for that ( I don't stream audio and I don't have a BT headset).
As for CIFS, it's SMB (Windows file sharing). If memory serves, VEGAn has that built in, you just need to get CIFSManager from the market and change the settings so that the support is loaded as a module. If you get this working, then you can mount a share onto the device as a mount point, and then run the content from there. There's probably quite a few threads on this, as CIFS was something that a lot of us wanted, early on.
Well in case you ever want to, I did find that the current version of DoubleTwist streams Shoutcast! streams just dandy and I now have a backyard streaming audio solution for my patio with some paired BT speakers
Now to find your hack on how to get netflix working on Vegan..

Just in case you don't see my reply on the other thread:
Give TuneIn Radio a shot, I think you may prefer it. I have yet to have a problem with it. It gives me shoutcast along with Internet Radio and probably much more. I have it running almost 24X7. It has a great desktop widget too.
It has been downloaded twice as much as Doubletwist and can record for you too. The pro version is only .99 compared to DT's $3.74
DT has also had quite a few complaints lately since latest update.

Now, the 64 dollar question: Are you doing any video streaming to your Gtab? Air Video Player is probably the defacto standard on the Ipad side of things, just install its server on your pc and, assuming your box has the horsepower to transcode video on the fly, it will basically play any video from any source and stream directly to the ipad/pod device of your choosing.
I am desperately seeking that solution for my Gtab. The best I have been able to do is this:
1) I seem to be able to stream any xvid of DVD-ish resolution just fine.
2) I seem to be able to stream WMV files at 720p just fine
3) I don't seem to be able to stream anything else just fine...
I can re-encode using HANDBRAKE and transfer to the GTAB but that defeats the purpose of streaming media.
Any thoughts? I heard there was a new app out that does a similar style of streaming for both Ipad and Android, but no idea if it works with the Gtab or not. I'm currently running Vegan 5.1.1.
I have enjoyed using AudioGalaxy for streaming music from my home computer library to my tablet. Tons of music accessible with no tablet storage use.
I checked out TuneIn......its a very slick interface, with one problem: It doesn't appear to be giving me any Shoutcast stations. Its giving me some major stations, its giving me local radio....but I can't get, for example, some crazy German trance station.
When I search the list of stations that comes back appears to be quite limited, also there doesn't appear to be a way to limit the minimum bandwidth (I don't want to see 64kbps mp3 streams in my search results).....actually, now that I think about it, I'm not sure i can search?
Anyhow, what am I missing....?
I copied a couple of 720p videos to my Galaxy Tab 10.1. The native video player says it can't play them. I tried a couple of other video players that generally do a good job and were able to play them using software decoding, but one had a really poor frame rate, the other ran in super slow motion.
Seems like the hardware isn't up to software decoding HD video and hardware decoding is finicky about formats?
These movies were both mpeg4 video, aac audio in a mp4 container.
When I copied them over it offered to convert them for me, but if I let it do so it seems to be very slow and would take over 9 hours. I'm sure I could do better using handbrake or something similar to recode as necessary.
But can someone summarize the requirements to get hardware accelerated decoding (or sufficiently fast software decoding) of 720p/1080p video?

Did you try Diceplayer and BS Player? Both are available from the Market for free (ad supported) and played all my 720p videos (most were .mkv).
I'd suggest giving them a try (you also have to download the tegra2 plugins for both players).
As for 1080p its a far cry - depending on the specific encoding options it might work fine or be really crappy. Best bet would be to re-encode the 1080p videos you want to watch on your tab, but 720p is usually manageable (and more then enough for our tab, since it's basically the resolution of our screen)

I like how they say the tab can handle 1080p video's, But forgot to mention "it would lag like ****" Youtube apparently get's played in 720p HD whereas getting a 1080p video to play is far from possible, perhaps ICS would make it possible, for now the stock decoders are horrible, HORRIBLE. Use the stock Movie Player/Video and it's like watching Lego or Minecraft graphics. Dice Player Ad is the best out there, and the only video player I use.
Just don't forget to download the Tegra2 plugin with it (Free ofcourse).
Thanks guys. I'll give Dice Player a try and see if it does a better job. I don't usually use 1080p so as long as it can decode 720p smoothly I'd be happy.
From what I've read, it seems that Tegra 2 can't decode Mpeg4 High Profile, which probably explains why the videos I tried don't work well. I'll also try recoding them with standard profile and see if those work. But apparently, most HD video (including commercially downloaded video) is high profile encoded so the fact that the Tegra 2 can't decode those is rather pathetic. I don't want to have to code/recode everything specifically for the tablet so that's rather disappointing...

Hence the name, BS player' It's BS cause they wanna market their stuff and make people pay, Their software acceleration is horrible. Dice player uses HW Accelerator which is why the video's are intensely smooth.

BS player also uses HW acceleration. In my experience it worked fine with most video - it has some problems in the first few seconds which Dice doesn't (since it doesn't start the video until it's loaded) but after it "warms up" it seems to work just fine for most of the stuff.
BS Player has some nice extra features like LAN mode, automatic subtitle downloading etc. But yeah, Dice player is usually better for playing movies "locally" (I'm using CIFSmanager to mount my media folder over wi-fi).
Every now and then you come across videos that Dice has problems with however, and then BS usually works (once I had a video that played at like double speed in Dice player, while the audio was normal speed. Changing the 1.0x 1.5x etc. speed settings on the right had no effect. BS player helped then ), so I keep both on my device.

A simple search: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1468498&highlight=cifs .
Basically, you have to push the cifs.ko module and then insmod it. Some ROMs (like the 3G ICS KANG) have the module included in the appropriate folder, so you can easily just modprobe it (open terminal: write "su" and then "modprobe cifs").
Then you just install CIFSmanager and set it to the appropriate IP/folder (for instance something like 192.168.1.42/Media - this would go to the comp at 192.168.1.42 and try to load up the shared folder with the name "Media").
You'll probably want to set up your router so it always gives the same IP to your media computer, as you don't want to check it's IP and change the settings every time
PS: Using cifsmanager is not without it's downsides though. I've noticed that if I turn off the wi-fi without first unmounting through the manager, the tab freezes (for about half a minute or so) when you try to show the folder containing the networked files. Mind you, I say show, not open - even just trying to see how many files are inside can lock it.
I worked around that by creating a CIFS folder on the root of the "sdcard", then extra folders inside CIFS for each mount. So I have /sdcard/CIFS/XBMC and /sdcard/CIFS/Music. Now I can safely look at my /sdcard folder without my tab freezing up (if I forget to unmount) - but if I try to open the CIFS folder it'll freeze up for a bit, then it'll give me the option to kill my file manager.
So basically, don't put the folder into which you'll mount directly on the root of your sdcard, or it'll become unusable if you forget to unmount
