Toggle2G? And I Got a Signal Bar Question! - Droid Eris Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I'm running Tazz Vanilla v22 right now and Toggle2G don't work with this ROM. Any suggestions? Also the signal bars seem inaccurate in 3G mode but I notice it seems like it's more accurate in 1x.

I recall investigating this inability on our phones and if I recall correctly, you can only switch to 2G mode on GSM phones, not CDMA phones like this.
Anyone correct me if I'm wrong or there's more to it than this.
I know you're often an answer man, though, so perhaps you know something about this that I don't. I know I've tried switching to 2G before and I couldn't on various ROMs.

okay this is seriously getting annoying

im losing service all the time
when my phone is sitting there it says 1 bar and 3G
but when i try to use anything that uses internet its cuts off and loses service,
then goes back and says 3bars and using 1x, which works.
So basically it wont connect to 3G and says it only has 1 bar when my sisters works n 3G and says she has 3bars. and when i tether its extra slow since its running off 1x, and it loses service randomly while surfing internet, or texting, or when making a call. but when im on the phone the service never cuts out and shows 3bars
any ideas?
ps happends with EVERY rom
update prl?
Every ROM at any location?
Perhaps posting in General will get you more answers.

I've had thus problem on occasion also. A ton with cyanogen rom. Seems better on ic3. And also since I used a newer radio. It does still happen though. Kills battery quick when it does.

The radios are a bit of a finnicky thing. Some people love the newest and some love the original.
Location is the most important factor when dealing with reception. You can try all the different radios and see which works best for you. There are threads on these forums with all the different radios attached.
*FYI - Be very careful when flashing radios as you could brick your phone if done improperly.

That is the latest radio, but as I said before some people swear that the older ones work better for them. It doesn't hurt to try others and see if anything improves for you. Here is a link to the radio thread.

If you're not getting good signal reception it could be your rom like someone mentioned. Some roms have signal bugs ive heard. Do you normally get reception and good signal strength when this happens? I see you updated your prl, but one thing that worked better for me was flashing the verizon/alltel hybrid prl. Gives me a much better signal, but some people have reported opposite effects. Cant search too well with tapatalk so I cant give you the link but its on here somewhere.

[Q] Radio for CM7

So apparently since I have less than 10 posts im not good enough for the CM7 Thread
I have been using CM7 RC.2 and RC.3 on the Thunderbolt and I have been having a problem with 3g and 4g connectivity. From what I have been reading in that forum, the Froyo radios are supposed to be working well.
My problem is that the tread devoted to Tbolt Radios doesnt make any sense to me. I wouldn't say that I'm new to this community but I don't really understand the difference between the images, nor which one is considered "Stock".
I Tried the radio that was listed in the CM7 OP (1.16.00.0223r) and I had horrible results. Many times when I was driving I had no connectivity at all.
Can anyone send me a link to the radio image that im supposed to be using?
Thank you

I had poor radio experience while on CM7. I am not to sure if the ROM has anything to do with it, but I had tried flashing various kernels and still had poor radio performance. I am on the GB MR2 and hit 4G for the first time in my house. Granted it was on brief. I am also running BAMF 2.0 #5
download lte on/off from the market. switch between cdma lte/whatever the hell (i don't remember but you'll know what i'm talking about) and cdma auto then go back after you get 3G. also try fix permissions.
Well I have been using the switch from the market but it doesn't seem to have the option to turn 4G back on. Right now I'm on CDMA auto so only 3G. Instead of saying LTE/CDMA Auto or whatever it just says unknown. Which is why I assume that I'm using the wrong radio image.
Again I am using the radio image that is listed in the cm7 forum OP.
And I do know that it is still a very early build so if this is just random bugs that are specific to my phone I would not be surprised.
Thanks again for the help guys

Do Kernals affect signal and 4G/3G

I was just wondering, Ive ran a couple different ROMS lately based on the newest leak and it seems that my 4G signal is not as good. I see 3g more it seems to even get stuck in 3g for periods of time for no apparent reason and doesn't seem to change as fast.
Now with the current ROM I'm running its a bit better, but still I'm on 3g where I got 4g before. I was just wondering if a different kernel would have any effect on this. Im not really sure it would because the kernel controls the processor and battery, stuff like that doesn't it? Radios control signal. Im wondering if the issue may be 3g/4g switching though and not an actual issue with signal.
I'm really not sure about any of it

The kernel shouldn't make a difference. Did you upgrade your radios to the latest leak?
I have this problem with the latest leak radios. I actually went back to gb radios because of it.
On the past few ics leaks I spent more time in 3g than anything.

[Q] Why do AOSP roms have less signal?

I've noticed when going from TW roms to AOSP roms that the service signal is dramatically lower. I can be running a TW based rom and have 4 bars of signal but then when I switch to an AOSP rom the signal indicator is at like 1 bar.
Why is that?
Any explanations are greatly appreciated. :good:

It's not less signal per-say but it's the way it's reported. Aosp reports it correctly where as tw it's exaggerated

Oh really. So if I go into settings and check the status where it displays signal strength would it be similar there? Or does that differentiate between the two types as well versus the visual signal strength in the status bar?
I appreciate the response.

I highly disagree with you. I can't stream any videos with AOSP without videos freezing and needing extra time to buffer. Touch wiz does in fact have a better signal because I've flashed back and forth enough to make that confirmation.
And that's in the same spot. Aosp in fact does not have better signal.

Go into settings and look at the reported dBm for the signal strength and see what it is, then compare it to the reading in the same location on TouchWiz. You would need to do this as close to the same time as possible to limit as much variability in the signal as possible. You can't trust the signal bars, they could be set to show you full service when you have none if one really wanted to.

I actually disproved my initial issue with this now.
I have been running Jelly Beans BLD 12. The signal strength was -98 to -100 dbm 40 ASU LTE:14
I just flashed the new release of Liquid Smooth V2.1.. The signal strength is -99 dbm 40 ASU LTE
This is the first time i've flashed between the 2 types TW and AOSP and have had the signal strength both in the settings status and displayed on the status bar.

How can that happen when the radio's are the same? All your flashing is a rom, and a rom CAN NOT change your signal strength.

You may get a slightly different signal strength, but it wouldn't be significant, only a few dBm. The RIL related java items are different between TW and AOSP, and there may be a slightly different modem driver in AOSP based ROMs as well, both of which could slightly affect signal, but again, nothing significant. I'd guess you'd have a 5 dBm change at most, which isn't something you could really even say is ROM related, as signal could vary that much just moving your phone 5 feet.

I have the same exact issue. This is not a reporting issue. Where there is low signal on TW, there is NO signal on AOSP. In regular or great signal areas on TW, there is acceptable or great reception on AOSP.

I must agree with you, before the sbrissen started trying to fix the RIL it was better but not by much. I am missing calls and texts left and right, to the point I am going to have to go back to TW.
I can't wait until everything gets worked out with the RIL though. I would rather run AOSP with the PA mods built in instead of them being hacked into a TW rom, its just better all around and much easier to deal with. This phone doesn't look right running in phone mode, it needs to run in phablet at least to look good!

i dont understand what RIL is. But i do use my phone a lot, at home and work. I notice signal strength weakened with AOSP roms not doubt about it. I don't even need to flash back and forth to notice or check the dbm or whatever. Spots that are usually weak inside buildings i wont have any at all. It cuts out often. like no signal at all. its unfortunate because i was starting to like stock android. You'd think there be a port from the google edition S4

AOSP signal vs TW

Today I moved over to a 4.4aosp rom, and I noticed that the phone switches to 3g a lot, and always when I put it in my pocket. Never had this on TW. Is this common with aosp?

Samsung has the proprietary drivers for cell signal. The RIL for CM Roms cannot obtain the same level of signal. I've compared this countless times with CM vs TW, and TW will always have the better signal/data strength. This is especially pronounced in areas of weaker signal. You'll notice that you'll drop LTE, and it will take a while to get it back. It has been much improved, but if signal is a must for you, TW cannot be beaten. Sometimes you can compare the dbm side by side and it will show the same, but real world use will have AOSP roms suffering more with their signal. Sucks, but it is what it is. I used to always flash aosp for speed and then signal issues would annoy me (work in buildings with poor service to start) and would end up on TW again. Ymmv

Understandable and thanks for replying back but I am still a little bit confused. This almost means that everybody who is on CM roms have only a 3G signal at best. And from what I have been researching TW roms pretty much do not exist anymore (or at least are not updated) I am just having a difficult time finding a rom that has everything I want as well as my LTE/4G data speeds. I have tried over 10 different nightly PacRom builds and its the same thing. If I mess around with the different "preferred network types I can get it to trigger LTE but then I am unable to make or receive calls. I would post this in the PacRom thread but I do not have enough posts to do so.
Thanks again for replying back.

Do you get full 4G when you're on a TW rom? I run nephilim right now after trying all the roms and I think it works quite well. Theres no perfect rom out there, so you'll have to decide what you're willing to sacrifice
What I noticed on AOSP/CM/AOKP roms:
Battery life is dismal - even on airplane mode I drained my battery to 20 in 6 hours.
GPS performance is lowered - even though I get locked on, it doesnt seem to track me as well. (this could be coincidental or biased.. lol)
Signal - definitely lowered, but barely not very noticeable. (You might want to check on a TW rom like I mentioned earlier)
Camera - some roms are super buggy, crashing every other shot then unable to initialize my camera afterwards
Text reflow is gone
Random bugs all around, usually not bad if I'm working in the office, but for weekend excursions, I'd rather have the stability of TW overall.
Let me know what you think, and definitely try switching back to a TW rom to see if your signal woes are resolved. Could be a hardware issue as well.

I need to locate a TW rom and go back to check. I am not seeing any that have been updated to 4.4 yet so I guess I will just have to settle with 4.3 because the signal and now that you mention it the battery life is very dismal. Thanks again for your assistance!

I tried Trent's and nephillim ROMs and I still have only 3g on both. This has just started happening recently too but it stays on 3g no matter how many times I wipe data and factory reset. Im starting to think that I may need a new sim card. Also I didn't realize the WiFi issue with the other two 4.3 ROMs until I already flashed them and then reverted back to 4.4
Thanks again for the assistance. I'm gonna get a new late sim card and see if that helps.
