I tried searching the forums and the Wiki but didn't see anything quite relating to what I'm trying to figure out.
I just got my hands on an HD2, previously I have a MyTouch 3G. I'm wondering if there is a way to move over my text (SMS) and MMS messages from the Android MyTouch 3G to the WM6.5 HD2?
The only way I could think of right now would be to use Sprite back up on both and do it that way, but I don't feel like shelling out $5 for the Android version and $30 for the WM version.
Any suggestions?
a way to do this (NOT THE BEST WAY)
- is backingup the sms/mms messages to your SD card
- add the sd card to your HD2 and copy a andriod port on you sd card
- with the dualboot to Android you can import the messages again.
now if you need you older messages .. just booti into Android and your set
maybe you can find a good backup application for android on appmarket (google it, download on your pc and drop on your sd card and install on your phone) now all paid apps are free to get
for WinMo you can use Omarket
I saved my messages on the SIM card, then I moved them from the SIM in Windows. I do not know of a cross-platform backup software Yet

I know this question has been asked before, but never answered and I was hoping that things might have changed by now.
I was wondering if there was any way whatsoever to get WM6.5.3 to store the SMS database on the micro-sd card, thereby not forcing me to keep trimming my sms messages as frequently as I have to.
I have a Tilt 2, running the latest NRGY ROM.

I am not so sure about your phone, but I am positive you could find out on the respective thread. I know for my Excalibur, there is a 'hack' (mod really) that allows for a larger number of SMS to store ... I don't think it re-routes it to the SD card though.
The issue is primarily that the SMS database file is the same as the Phonebook, Recent Calls, and VoiceMail records(?)...I honestly forget. I did some digging into this a while ago, but stopped. Its rather inconvenient since its all partially encrypted, or at least not that easy to just parse through.
I have been contemplating starting a project (which I have already started conceptualizing) that will replace the dumb CE MAPI once and for all. It would be a suite of programs [Replacement SMS/MMS/EMail/etc. Transport DLL, Replacement tmail.exe, Replacement database] ... with end-users in mind, such that data is easy to obtain. I would probably store it as XML or something similar. If I do go through with this, I will be sure to consider storing to Storage Card AND/OR main memory

Now looking at the ups and downs of this proposition it looks like it will do everything I want out of the box (Give or take a bit) the only concern is the ability to run apps from the SD which doesn’t appear to be available until upgrading to 2.2.
If I want the phone unlocked and free to do as I say, I obviously can’t go downloading a carrier specific Rom, so need either a factory default or Home baked number.
So… What Android 2.2 ROM is available that is as close to the Unlocked factory default as possible? Or can you download the Unlocked Factory Default from HTC direct (I have tried and failed)

Also, how and where are you getting your phone?
Most of us (it seems) in this forum got our phones when they were running 2.1 and we were able to easily root them with unrevoked. People who have gotten the Gratia or warranty replacements recently with the official 2.2 system in place have not been able to root.

Thanks for that mtnlion. I thought this was my last hurdle but then I considered the implications of syncing outlook contacts and calendars… It appears that you need a third part application to do that. FFS why can’t someone port WM6.5 to the Aria HW? It would make life so much easier.

Maybe I just have to cross my fingers and hope that HTC keeps supporting the small form factor and wait for there next round of releases, and hope something fits.
I haven't used it in quite awhile but I'm pretty sure the HTC sync software will sync outlook and calendar when you plug in your phone.and there are apps on the market also.

Thanks again mtnlion, but this still leaves me with the issue highlighted by stone ship that some systems won’t let you root break them and put on non official ROM images. The Aria as a solution is so close I can taste it… But I am just not confident it is going to be without issues.

Well... after rereading your post it seems that you may not be aware of this.
The phone you purchased will most likely (if new) come with software preinstalled from the factory that will prohibit you from rooting it via software methods.
You will need to send the phone to someone else to downgrade it for you. Then you can root it and install the software above.

Cross your fingers that you got one with 2.1 on it so you can root it easily. If not I can point you to someone who can s-off it for you.
The Aria is a great little phone and once you get things sorted out I think you will find you can do what you need with it. Syncing outlook contacts and calendars should not be an issue either through activesync or HTC sync regardless of official or cooked rom.
You say Active sync or HTC sync??? Does that mean that M$ Active sync can sync with an Android device? That would be weird.
The device is advertised as unlocked and 2.1 As long as it is unlocked then I am good even if it is 2.2 I don’t expect to need it rooted in the immediate term, though I do expect I am going to have to hack around a little to get the Audio on my Cardo Scala headset sorted (it doesn’t support A2DP) so I may be eating those words in short order.

Seeing I am asking these questions I may as well outline the Bluetooth issue I have and see if any one can shed any light on the Android solution.
As I said in my previous post my Bluetooth headset doesn’t support A2DP, so to get music playing on it (or get GPS spoken directions) I need to perform a couple of hacks
The first one is to combine the stereo channels so on my Windows mobile I do this by applying the following to the registry.
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Bluetooth\A2DP\Settings]
"UseJointStereo"=dword:00000001
The second (And more important) is to change the Bluetooth channel behavior which is done by making the voice command attribute do nothing (remove the path of the executable) and keeping the channel open for an indefinite amount of time (VoiceCmdDuration being a large number)

Well I now have my aria in my greasy little hands, and for better or worse… It has 2.2 loaded.

The Limitations of Android are really annoying. (Unrooted)
I can’t Leave the device Synchronizing and also copy files back and forth (I Can in WM5)
I can’t copy files directly to the device only to the SD Card (I Can in WM5)
I can’t access the SD card from the device while I am accessing it from the PC (I Can in WM5)
I can’t edit configuration files to alter how it interacts with things such as Bluetooth (I Can in WM5)
I can’t store resources such as ringtones on the device, only on the SD card (I Can in WM5)
I can’t control the phone from my desktop computer such as MyMobiler (I Can in WM5)
And these are just the limitations I have found in 3 days when comparing it to a 6 year old Operating system.
And because it came pre installed with 2.2 I can’t root it…
It really appears that if it isn’t rooted it is pretty F#$ked.
Android is not really designed to be synchronized over USB. Yes, you can do it, and HTC makes a program for it specifically, but I suggest abandoning that habit and getting used to wireless syncing instead. The only reason I ever connect my phone to a computer is to copy a file, and even then I sometimes choose to do it with Dropbox instead, or send the link to the phone through ChromeToPhone.
Even if you don't want to use Google Calendar/Contacts as your primary calendar/contacts manager, you should be able to set up Outlook on your computer to synchronize with them. I don't personally use Outlook so I can't say what the best method for doing this is, but perhaps someone else can chime in with a suggestion.
As for the SD card, I don't think there is really any significant disadvantage to storing files on the SD card. Assuming you just leave your SD card in the phone, what's the difference? Some Android phones do have internal memory you can use for copying files to though.
As for the bluetooth issue, yes, that sucks. Good luck finding a solution for that if one exists.

It is O.K. But does have a nasty habit of rebooting the device if you don’t shut it down properly before disconnecting the bluetooth connection.
It still doesn’t allow me to initiate actions from the headset other than picking up calls, but at the end of the day this is all I require.
After my torrent of negatives I have found a few starters for what Android is doing better…
When you mount the SD card to the computer it is fully available, you can read & edit files not just copy to and from (I Can’t in WM5)
Once you throw a file manager on the device it browses UNC paths well
Though It does appear I am getting some really weird $hit happening with my Outlook calendars.
And I have noted that I can’t have different screen timeout behavior dependent on weather it is plugged in or not.
If I could have the best of WM, and the best of Droid, I would be a happy little camper.
[Q] Old SMS "simbackup.dsb" from early android, need to read them, no idea which app!
Long ago (2008 ish) I got my first android, a T-Mobile/Google/HTC G1 "Dream", I think. It had a sim backup function, or maybe an app I downloaded that did SIM backups, can't remember which. It may have been an integrated function within Android, from memory, accessed via import/export. But that's a very vague memory, quite possibly wrong.
I just now found some old contacts weren't ever moved to my current phone. I'm pretty sure the phone numbers were originally from messages I received at that time, so the sim backup files I have from those days (10 of them dated 2008 - 2009) should contain either the contact details, or SIM messages originally containing the phone numbers.
But does anyone have an idea what app might have created these, or what app might be able to read them? I have no idea the format used, it seems to be not plain text but I can't tell anything else.
A quick google search suggests "Sim Manager" but apparently that was on Windows Mobile only, and I've only ever had Android.
Hi all, I just received my new handset, a Sony Xperia Z3 Compact as an upgrade to my Samsung Galaxy S4. I'm not a noob per se, but these are noob questions I have, any answers for which I would be most grateful. My otherwise stellar google-fu has failed me these past two days and some clearer, direct advice and answers would be immensely helpful.
- A general question re: the Play Store. If I purchase a paid app, does it remain available to me to re-download and update forever after? Does it last between multiple/new devices? I want to buy Navigon Europe, but wanted to know if it's a once-only deal or remains available to me to download permanently.
- Contact syncing. On my past android phones, I've always somehow managed to import all my contacts from various online accts (eg. FB, GMail, etc). I have all my contacts (up-to-date) in Outlook on my PC and ideally want them, and only them, on my device contact list. I don't want the phone to synch anything with anything except my Outlook contacts but don't know what steps I can take to avoid that.
- Battery: I've had mixed messages about the first charge (currently in-progress at the time of writing!). Do Li-Ion batteries need to be charged for 16hrs or just until they're full?
- Converting the SIM Card: My S4 uses a MicroSIM, the Z3 Compact a NanoSIM. I heard they can be cut manually...is it safe to do that, or should I wait 3 days for TMobile (UK) to send me one?
I have two last questions that are more general advice than anything, but answers still appreciated!
- What apps/services are best to transfer my data over from my old handset to the new one? I can figure this out, but any recommendations from experience in doing the same would be welcome. Paid apps are transferrable between devices, assuming you use the same Google account that it is linked to.
When you sign into Google (and your other accounts) it will ask if you want to Backup and Restore. Just leave it unchecked and then when finished importing Outlook contacts, you can go into your Google account and just make sure to only sync the options you're interested in by checking/unchecking whatever boxes you need.
I find a good way to transfer texts, call logs, apps, etc from device to device is by using an app like Go Backup. You were on the right path with the idea of backing up on the phone, transferring to PC, and switching it to a new phone. If you don't have access to a PC at the time, you can use something like Wifi File Explorer Pro to connect to it, assuming you have access to wifi or can wifi tether between the 2.
Cutting of the SIM is possible manually, but if you don't have access to a good SIM card cutter tool (obviously you don't have one in your possession, but any respectable repair shop or cell phone provider will have one. It only takes 5 seconds, but still there is a slight risk of damaging the card. It is best to get a new one. It is possible to cut with a sharp Exacto knife or something of the sort, but when going to nano, the margin of error is so small that I don't recommend.
As far as root and Barclay's, I don't believe it is an option. There have been attempts to bypass this restriction, but I believe that it has been without success. See:

Thank you for your helpful reply! I've moved most of my data over successfully, installed/copied most apps and setup most accounts. I did however ruin my MicroSIM in my attempts at converting it to Nano size. Have ordered a replacement but currently unable to call or text. Ah well!
I took the plunge and blew some money on the Play Store. I have the apps working now, and hope that they will remain available to me hereafter.
Thanks for the info on the Barclays App. I think I will skip rooting again *sigh* It's very annoying. There's a bunch of bloat I cannot freeze/quarantine, the ability to move apps to the SD card isn't available...all for one app If I found an APK of an old version, from back when it worked on a rooted phone, that might be an option?
Only issue I now have (apart from getting used to a few changes!) is with Email. On the S4, I set up my email as follows: Email: Forwarding Address - Incoming Server: BT Internet - Outgoing: Gmail (Set to send using my forwarding address). It worked fine. Now on the Z3C, I no longer have a box to enter my "Email address". Only "Username" and "Password". I can get my Emails from BT, can send via Gmail but it comes with "On behalf of..." in the sender field which is driving me mad! These are the little things that reallyget aggravating. Spent 2 hours already trying to work it out
Me and my parents both have Android TV boxes. I have a standard Android TV MXQ quad-core box and my parents have a specially programmed Albanian Android TV box called VIP TV. On their box they have an app called AlbAppTV which gives them Albanian channels to watch. I bought my Android box specifically to get this AlbAppTV app, but I learned that the only version that worked is version 4.0, which was removed not only on Android app stores but there were also no more APK files on the internet for this app besides versions that don't work. But I realized that 1) Of course, my parents' box has version 4.0 and 2) The box came with an SD Card. I was thinking that I could put the app on the SD Card and go put it on my box, but I don't know if it will still be on my parents' box if I put it on the SD Card. So that's the only thing that concerns me, because I'm afraid I could mess up my parents' box by doing this. I'm not looking for any alternatives to get Albanian channels, I've tried many and even if there is more ways, I'm not interested in them. All I want as an answer is how I can transfer the AlbAppTV app from parents' box to my box while my parents still keep the app and don't lose the app. Please help, without this my Android box will have totally gone to waste! Thank you!
UPDATE: So I've gotten a lot of help from a different thread I posted on a different forum with the exact same question. I learned that I needed to install a backup version to install on the SD Card. So I downloaded an app called Android Backup and Restore. But when I tried to install the backup version so I could get it onto my SD Card, it said that it would replace the original version with the backup. Unfortunately, that person couldn't help me anymore, so I came to this website. Can anyone please help? Thank You!
