[Q] Newbie - Optimus One, P500, V General

I am enjoying my new P500 (LG Optimus one in India)
I am newbie to both Android and the LG Optimus one (P500). Forgive me if some of my questions are trivial
1. How do i install swype ? I cant seem to find it in the market place.
2. How do i exit any application. I use the back (or return key) to come out of a program ? I checked the task killer and quite a lot of program seem to be running. Is this the only place i can kill (or close) them ?
3. Contacts sent as a business card over sms are not received while via bluetooth its ok.
Would have more questions as I explore.

You will not find SWYPE in the marketplace. But you should be able to google it up Search for Swype HGVA version.
Use the back key to exit any app. And don't worry about the memory. Froyo deals with it intelligently and automatically exit apps if it runs low on ram
And oh! Welcome to the world of ANDROID

2. If you want to kill an application completely, It can be done through Menu button > Settings > Applications > Manage applications > Running Tab and look for the app you want to kill. select it then hit Force stop button.
3. yeah, unfortunately we can't send/receive vcards (business card) over SMS. I think there are 3rd party app that can manage this available in the Market. just search using keywords vcf or vcard.
Hope this helps.

Hey, you can read the article about how apps works in Android, and why you should'nt kill all of the process.
lifehacker.com/5650894/android-task-killers-explained-what-they-do-and-why-you-shouldnt-use-them
And I guess that you can't see all of the apps in your market, because you're from India. Just because of that - you should use Black Market.

Black Market...... Ooooohhhh, scaaaarrry....

flash player 10.1
how do I turn the flash player 10.1 in P500?

So, lets go through http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=841878
So, short: Turn on of Flash Player is not possiblem, becose processor on device is not supported by Flash 10.1

There's no flash player for Optimus One, but why do you need it? Maybie there's an app for that?

market only showing some apps

i have noticed that alot of the apps i have on my phone do not show up in the market on the nook. actually at most it only shows maybe 15-20 apps per category. i do a search for a app and it dont show up either. flash for instance does not exist in the market. anyone know why
turn the nook to landscape and more will show up. or install the new market.
Sent from my NookColor using XDA App
I don't know why this.is happening, although I am having the same problem. I just started taking the apks from /data on my phone and loading them onto the nook and installing them that way. Its more complicated than using the market, but not a whole lot more complicated.!
Sent from my LogicPD Zoom2 using XDA App
irnoically turning it landscape mode worked as for showing up more apps lol. no clue why but it worked. it still wont find half the apps i have on my phone. like flash wont show up which is kind of important when using the web to its full. can you use astro to instal apps on this like you can on a phone? or is there some different procedure
There's another post in the nook forums which basically states to install "fastweb installer" and "AppBrain App Market". This worked for me and allowed me to find programs like Trillian (but at that price, @#[email protected]#$ that).
I don't think there's an overly usable flash at this point. You'll need to wait for 2.2 from B&N or the NookDevs.
The market on the NOOKcolor, even if it looks like the new market, will only show applications that conform to the Android API 7 API level (2.1 and below). FroYo apps all conform to the Android API 8, so they won't show up on your nook unless you drop FroYo onto it.
Source: http://developer.android.com/guide/appendix/api-levels.html
Using Root Explorer, I changed the System/App folder to R/W and was then able to upgrade the current Marketplace to the newer APK that is floating around the forums. With the new marketplace all apps are showing without needing to turn the screen to landscape.

The problem stated in this thread isn't about the ability to scroll lists in portrait or landscape, rather it is about the ability to see apps that other devices can find.
Two I have seen that immediately come to mind: searching for Firefox, and searching for Trillian (which was a rude way to find out Trillian is both out of beta and now rather expensive, dammit).
Neither will show up on the NC, but show up as the first result on my Droid.
And my NC is also running the latest iteration of Market.

Well, I know flash doesn't show up because it's not (yet) supported on NC. Maybe Firefox and Trillian don't show up for the same reason?

Are these people that are running nookie froyo, or stock 2.1?
All the apps will show up in nookie. They shouldn't in stock 2.1.
Worked on Nootered and Nookie Froyo .59 with new Market
I had the same issue and followed these insturctions from (i think) the original Nootered thread, but cant remember for sure.
Settings->Applications->Manage Applications-> Market->Clear Cache (NOT DATA!)
then
Settings->Applications->Manage Applications-> Google Services Framework -> Clear Data -> Force Close
reboot
After that SliceIt, Minimalistic Text, and others that were not available previously appear.

Thanks this helped me alot! i kept forgetting to reset the Google one.... duh....
dont forget the part where its set to default to only show downloaded apps in the settings so you need to go to menu and filter and show all

Have had nothing but fun playing with the nook. Even formatting my microsd card in the nook and ending up with it not turning on for a day till I repartitioned the storage didn't make me think it was not worth the effort. Compared to a $600 Galaxy Tab the nook is a bargain and well worth all the love bestowed on it IMHO.
fyi just clearing the market cache made some apps i couldn't find before appear. so even if the google framework is non existent in some like mine clearing cache does help
Google framework is not listed on my apps list. Im trying to download games such as angry birds and rocket bunnies but they don't show up

[Q] There are Apps in the background

Dear Friends!
Glad to be here today (after 2 days! )
My dear Streaker is here!!
As the norm is, I have been busy tinkering with the stock material for couple o days, and I will continue to do so for some more time!
___________________________________________________________
Query: There are too many apps running (background) all the time!! I kill them, they resurrect!, How to do away with that?
Solution applied: Used Advanced task killer (but, apps resurrect!)
Another Solution tried: In Settings>Account & Sync settings> Unchecked Background data and Auto sync options. (Now, they dont connect to the net, but, they still restart!!)
Another Solution: Force close (from Manage apps) .. (Still same issue!)
Now, How can I tell the apps to come up only when I call them!?
(And some other apps I want to schedule them to come up every hour or so.. like my Gmail/FB)
____________________________________________________________
And, So far has been amazing experience!!
The screen is football field sized!! (Monster! yikes Scooby!)
Digging up all old posts to read some problems faced by new users..
Current hobby: Market and apps.
Future hobby: Roms and Flash!
Thank you all for your help!
care,
Sony.
Welcome to the cool kids club! I'm in a somewhat similar situation, I got my streak just before the massive snowstorm hit. Some of those apps need to be running... if you close some of them you may not get updates/notifications, or you can shut down your phone/data connection, or lose the use of multitouch.

from what i understand, froyo is really good with resource management and there is no need to constantly kill processes or apps, its best to just leave them unless your streak is slow like a snail

Lose multi touch!
How?
@rptw
So, It wouldnt really matter if there are apps running in the BG, and they start by themselves too!?
care,
Sony.
well in terms of the laws of nature (in most cases) stuff doesnt happen spontaneously so i think its safe to assume that your app that "started by themselves" were probably opened somehow either by you directly or indirectly by something else. if, however, you have a large number of apps that have started that you dont recall opening, maybe something is wrong with your software and you shouldnt try to cover the problem with a task killer.
So, what next!?

So, Now, can you or other guys here please suggest how to go to the "root" of this problem!?
Ok.
Look, these apps are open right now!
Voice Search
Email
Messaging
Maps
Astro
Assistant free
I use the Adv Task Killer free.
(It says 7 apps killed and 180 MB free)
I open Adv task killer after 5 seconds.
and these apps are running!
Email
astro
Voice Search
Assistant Free
and I am sure, If I wait for some more time, the other apps will join in too!
(Now it says, 3 Apps killed, 171 MB free!!)
care,
Sony.
have you tried using the stock app manager and killing the apps there? i just checked my phone and i have the same apps under the running tab using the stock manager, i think email and messaging are always running since you have push features on them, in terms of the others im not sure. whats so bad about email and messaging running anyways? im sure you use them often enough to not want to have to open and close them right?
Hey, you posted the same question over at Pocketables forum.
As stated earlier, 2.2 is really good at managing back ground tasks.
I can tell you if you use a task killer and you have a problem with an APP, which currently you do not, the programmer for the app probably will not help you till you remove the APP killer program.
What you might try to do is run though your menus and see what you have selected to run, such as locations and sync services and disable what you can. Also if you do not want some thing running, you may want to just uninstall it. I do understand that you want some programs but you only want them to run when you ask, not sure how to tell you to handle that.
But, are you seeing any difference when you have the background tasks disabled. Try to find the APK for the programs and rename them just to see if you have any issues.

Overlocking, Webtop Browsers, and Softkeys Questions.

Hi, I just got my atrix 4g for a couple of week. I currently using Alien rom and has hacked my lapdock to use full ubuntu. I got a few questions regarding the phone and the lapdock. Any help is greatly appreciated.
1/ Alien rom use kernel that has overlocking function. Do I need any special inatallations to use it or can I just grab one of those CPU control app on the market and use them?
2/ I followed the stickie guide in general section to upgrade my lapdock to use full ubuntu using webtop2sd. However, the firefox application on my lapdock keep crashing. The the google chrome browser cant access any of the google services. It keeps saying the the website was down or has been moved. How do I fix these issues?
3/ when you quickly press the home soft key twice, it launches the stock web browser. Is there anyway to remap this function to launch other apps? And apply it to other key also? Theres is an app on the market that did this, however it limit to only long pressing the search key. However, this seemed to be built in to os itself so I think we might be able to have a broader options to use softkey to launch applications.
Thanks.

settings/manage applications/double tap home to launch
your can only choose from what's listed on the options, I believe. don't know if there's any mods to allow other apps to be able to open with that method.
if anyone knows otherwise, that info would be greatly be appreciated.

[Q] safe to stop programs at boot? (soory if this has already been done)

I'm using Startup Manager (Free) and I wonder if any of you in the know kind folk of XDA could tell me which of the following I can disable launching from boot to try and save battery -
Camera (stop at launch until I want to use it? I take very few photo's)
com.sec.android.providers.down... (all I can see of the name)
com.sec.phone (I'm guessing this is needed)
Download Manger
DSMLawmo
Factory Mode
Google Contacts Sync ( I do not sync anything so to drop this if possible would be nice)
Google Partner Set Up
Google Services Framework
Samsung keyboard (I use swype so is it so silly to think this may be able to be stopped? lol I don't know)
Service Mode
SysScope
TwDVFSapp
If anyone would list the 1's I can stop or copy what I wrote and put a yes/no next to them that would be awesome.
Again I'm sorry if this is repeating what others have previously done, I hope a fresh thread won't hurt if so.
Thanks in advance guys

From my experience it's best to leave system apps untouched. For example when I disabled Samsung Keyboard because I use another one, I sometimes got fc's of it and sometimes my device freezes.
Contact Sync you can disable in Settings.

Only one google account ? (4.4.2)

Hi guys,
I have Amlogic S812 streamer Xtreamer Wonder and it's running on 4.4.2 Android.
In the Settings menu there is no possibility (no menu at all) to add another Google account in addition to the one that was created initially. As a result all Google apps such Play Market, Gmail, Drive etc, working with one and only account without ability to switch to another one if needed. It's especially limiting with Paid apps which was bought under different accounts...
I tried to search all over the internet for the similar issue, but surprisingly did not found any ...
All the rest functionality is as usual, I also have root, thanks to the Rooting Guide by C3C076
Any help is very appreciated!
This is how Settings menu looks like :
Unfortunately, this firmware disable this feature.
So, to change google account, you have to use adb tool and remove /data/data/com.android.providers.settings/databases/settings.db file (if box is root) and add another account.
If box isn't root, you have to factory reset this box to add new account

Thanks for your answer water275, but is what you mean is just removing existing and adding a new one, but there still will be only one account ?
I tried to use few different apps which can manage existing accounts and I had there the option to remove account, but not to add. So in order to remove i think i can use this way, instead of adb. But what about to have multiple accounts? Absolutely impossible ?
What is interesting is that those account management apps allowed me to go into sync options for existing accounts. So it looks like the Xtreamer just hiding required functionality (menus) and not completely removed them. I was thinking in direction of xml files which are responsible for menu layouts, but i have not too much knowledge with them...
You can use Gmail. When you slide left panel in, there's an arrow next to your profile name. When you expand it you will see "Manage accounts" menu option.
Alternatively you can use my simple app (attached) I created for this purpose.

Sorry, you are right. I got confused because of launching that app on my phone which runs lollipop. It unfortunately behaves differently on KitKat.
I'll try your app on my android stick in car, there is also 4.4.2 just to compare, but as i said earlier even that menu that your app shows is not available from the usual settings menu, so it seems like Xtreamer just hiding these menus for some reasons.

For some reason on my Android stick in the car your app can't be installed. I have Install and Cancel buttons, but Install not clickable. I'll try similar app from the store later.
Found solution !
The reason is that Xtreamer installed custom Gmail app that is not asking for update and installed as a system app (you can't uninstall it in usual way). This app have no option to add/manage account as I shown on the screenshots above.
Thanks to ROOT i was able to remove that app completely from /system/apps , and installed official Gmail app from the store. In the official app there is full managing functionality for accounts and i was able to add multiple gmails there.
I highly recommend to uninstall pre-installed Drive and Youtube apps too.
In the general settings menu of Android there is still no manage account section, but at least I can get there through Gmail now.
Thanks to everybody for your help !
