[Q] Entering Bootloader Without Vol. Down - Touch Pro CDMA

This one may already be a lost cause but I'm going to ask anyway.
I was in the midst of a Task 29 with splash screen at work on my TP getting ready to flash a titanium ROM when my supervisor called me over to talk. When I got up, my foot got tangled in with my USB cord and my phone fell side-first on the ground with a lot of force. I picked up my phone to see that I had cracked the battery cover and that the volume rocker was detached from the phone. At first, I didn't think too much of it and I tried to just put it back in it's slot but it kept falling out and it didn't actually touch the circuit board in the right place anymore.
It wasn't until I was ready to try to enter the bootloader again that I realized that I needed the volume down button. Currently, all my TP can do is just show the splash screen that I flashed on it but that's it. I can't enter the bootloader at all. Does anyone know any other way that I can flash a ROM on the phone or at least enter the bootloader from a splash screen flashed phone without using Volume Down?
I've asked the good folks at PPC Geeks the same question. I'll update folks about this if I get an answer ever there...
Thanks.

try endkey replacement, you can read and download it at http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=704631 hopefully it can help you

Thanks I'll give it a read now and let know you know.

It would have been great, the problem is that I flashed a splash screen during my task 29 and not a radio, I can't get passed that "touch pro" screen. I can't install any cabs at all.
Thanks though.

Bricked FUZE!!!

How does att find out if your phone is bricked or not?
When I start up my fuze it stays at the Att boot screen.
Any help?
Try hard reset? Hold volume down button, press the select button (center click of the d-pad), and then put the stylus in the reset hole. If it still screwed up, you might try what I've seen mentioned on here....kind of radical, but 2-3 people say it works. Pull your sim card & SD mini card (if you have one), now get this....stick the phone in the microwave for two seconds. It fries it good and apparently (I've not done this) they can't tell you've bricked it. Then you can request a warranty exchange.
If you haven't already tried hard resetting your phone you can do the following:
Hold pressed the volume down button together with the round "OK" button and while holding those press the reset button with the tip of the stylus (it is located right next to the usb / charging port) until you see a white screen with blue letters. It will ask you to press volume up to restore the original ROM - just foolow the instructions and you'll be fine! Hope i've helped!
yea ive tried holding vol down button and the center and tried restoring it, but it still doesnt boot up after that. How do they find out if it bricked or not?

Rather than trying to hard reset, have you verified whether you can or cannot enter Bootloader mode? If you can, you should be able to flash a stock ROM to your device.
That has happened to me a while back, here is what I did.
Put your phone into Bootloader mode,
press and hold the volume down button, then press the reset button with the stylus. Release the volume down button when bootloader tricolour screen appears**
Plug your phone back into your PC and flash another ROM.
How will ATT know if you bricked your fuze? Well, if you send it in for service, that's how they'll know if you bricked it. More to the point, what did you do to your fuze to get it into the current state? Have you flashed any cooked roms on it, or are you on the stock rom/spl/radio/etc.? If so, you shouldn't have too much to worry about from a warranty perspective. Have you flashed any roms onto your fuze? Did you flash hard spl (1.90.olinex)? Did you flash a cdma rom onto your fuze (in other words, one you downloaded from ppc geeks or the cdma forum here)? Did you flash a non-compliant radio? You might as well spit out a little info if you want any help.

Pumpiron579,
Thanky you and all who has helped me. Worked in bootloader screen. Phone now works.
I wondered about that myself, but, I've seen a couple of posts on XDA about putting the phone into a microwave for 2 seconds. I'm sure the magnatron tube in the microwave will "really" appreciate it LOL

I would pull the battery, that's most likely to explode.
I know I saw the thread before on how to revert your phone to send it back to warranty, but I can't find the thread. If anyone can be kind to please post that link here.

Actually, I had a friend brick his verizon touch pro. He nuked it for two seconds and they exchanged it. No questions asked.
if you put anything metal in your microwave for very long, especially electronics, you can kiss that microwave good bye. my baby brother put a gameboy in the microwave and 5 seconds later the microwave was dead, the gameboy miraculously survived though.

[Q] Is my Vibrant dead?

So I plugged my Vibrant into Odin to revert to stock. Apparently everything went wrong, and now my phone is stuck at the Phone---!---computer screen. It seems that my phone won't respond to hardware methods of entering download mode, so am I screwed?
Keep reading on here. This has happened to many people. Keep trying things and hopefully you will get it.
1. Remove SD and SIM card
2. Remove battery
3. plugged the phone into USB (connected to PC)
4. held down vol-up and vol-down
5. popped the battery back in while holding vol buttons
I've tried that, and many other methods, multiple times already. It seems that none of the volume/power methods do anything for my phone. I'm certain that if hardware-locks do exist for certain vibrants, mine just so happens to be one of them (Date on box is August 13). I just want to know if anyone with a similarly dated phone has ever been able to access download mode without adb.
If anyone knows of more methods, please post them. If all else fails, I'll go complain in my local T-Mobile store that my phone died. I have no idea if that'll get me anywhere, but it's worth a shot.
Does anyone who has had a problem similar to mine know of any fix? By that I mean, has someone who has had a presumably hardware-locked phone ever been able to boot it into download mode without adb? I'd really like to know if I can salvage this thing, or if I have to try my luck with T-Mobile.
Try holding volume down and holding power button and plug in USB while this is happening.
Sadly, I've tried that method as well, thank you though for responding. I will continue trying since it seems not to be a 100% thing for some people. Anyway, for the Volume keys + Power method, can anyone provide a more precise time of releasing power than "When it goes black". I'm hoping my inability to enter download mode is human-error, so I'd like as much input on this as possible. Thanks in advance.

When you see the " !---> (pc)" symbol, plug your USB in. Hold down volume +, volume -, and power. As soon as the screen turns black release the power button only. Continue holding Vol + and Vol -. You'll enter Download mode.
I've tried that multiple times, but I will continue to try it. It seems as though my phone won't register that buttons are being pressed. All that happens is the phone reboots to the Phone--!--Computer screen every time the power is held and released (As it should). No combination of buttons seems to have any affect on this. Oh well, I'll continue trying and hopefully someone will post a working method.
I have the same problem and the hardware button method isn't working and I am stuck at the Phone ! Computer screen, and I read around the forums and they say that some Vibrant's have the hardware method locked, so you can't boot into Download mode from using the buttons. Since adb cannot find the phone when its stuck at this screen it seems we are both screwed. I have found no other solution other than returning it Tmo, not sure if they will exchange since it might be a violation of warranty.
I'm just going to play dumb when I go to T-Mobile. I'll say it just booted into that screen, and I can't get out of it. The hardware lock appears to be a defect, since it's not present on most Vibrants, so that should be able to warrant the replacement phone. I've been with T-Mobile awhile, and they're usually pretty good with replacements. Besides, the phone would be easily fixed if it wasn't broken in the first place.
But before I go to T-Mobile, I'm going to try and talk to Customer Service. If it's a common problem, then I'm sure it can be covered under warranty (Even though MOST ways of getting it require voiding warranty). Again, on the basis that this wouldn't be a big deal if my phone worked like a normal Vibrant. Besides, I'm sure T-Mobile can flash it without requiring the hardware method, so even if they only charge me some sort of service fee, I won't really mind.
As final moral reassurance for myself, I only tried to flash it because apps started FC on me and the phone constantly acted weird. The only thing I've done is root it, so it's not like I really set it up to fail.
Let me know how it goes with Customer Service. I would to get this problem resolved as well with the least amount of trouble. I don't want to have a brick and have to pay like $500 for a new phone. And I think the hardware buttons thing might actually be a defect. I tried doing the hardware buttons thing to get to recovery mode once before and it worked. I did this to install an update.zip to root the phone. It only worked that one time and now the buttons don't boot into recovery mode or download mode. It if works once then not again, there has to be something wrong.
I'll be trying them tomorrow (It's 10PM where I am). If all goes well, I'll try and contact you. I'm pretty sure I'll be safe so long as I don't mention rooting it. The firmware flash they'll have to do should help me on that front, so unless they catch on, I should be safe. Anyway, hopefully tomorrow I'll be good news, otherwise expect some post from me on Monday or Tuesday, depending on whether I have the time to deal with them or not.
Hey Generic112, I got with T-Mobile customer service. I told them about the screen I was seeing but did not mention rooting or attempting to flash the phone. They said they will replace my phone by shipping me a new Vibrant, but I have to return the one I have. I am not sure if they will do a check to verify if the Vibrant was rooted or not after they receive it, but I will have my new Vibrant before they receive the one I have. I won't know what will happen for awhile because its going to take a week for the new phone to arrive and when it does then I will be returning the one with the phone ! computer problem, unless someone thinks it is a better idea to tell them what happened and have them repair it?

This method actually worked for me. I was beginning to think I'd have to build the USB jig, but tried this as a last ditch. Thanks!
The above method has worked for me numerous times with the same problem, my old bricked one, and my new one. Try holding down power button as well once or twice, never know. You have to keep the volume buttons pressed the whole time for it to work.

In some cases that I've read they say, TMo charged them 600$ for the Replacement after finding out that it was bricked due to hacking. Before replacing try to get it repaired by them.
I would also like people whose phones were replaced to confirm what I've said above.

He should be able to get the phone woking again, what happened is not a big deal. If he sends it in the way it's sitting right now, t'Mo's techs won't have a problem getting it working again. (IMO) Especially if they find out the phone's rooted, I wouldn't be surprised if he gets charged.
I bricked my phone so bad, it was beyond recovery. I erased the bootloader, therefore it was completelly dead. No life. I got a replacement under warranty for free, never got charged for it.
My advice would be to try and get to work again before sending it in.

Cant scroll down to flash from sd in Recovery

I was trying to root my Eris and i went to the 1 click eris root thread, downloaded it, followed all the directions, now when i hold vol up and power it boots to the recovery thing. From here im supposed to scroll down to flash zip from sd. I cant. Ive tried the track ball, the volume keys, everything. All it will let me do is press the trackball to select "reset device" or whatever the first option is. Any help? Like is there any way to flash that zip without using that recovery thing? Sorry if this is some simple noob mistake. just got my eris last week.
Anybody? Is there a different bootloader/recovery program i could load onto my phone to flash the "rootme.zip"?
EDIT: i think my trackball might just be broken or something, is there somethin i could edit to make it where the vol keys move the selector up and down instead of the track ball? i can still press the trackball, just cant scroll with it.
Sounds like a broken trackball to me. Mine broke a month after I first got my Eris, it would only scroll left. The phone was under warranty so I got it exchanged no problem. My younger brother had the same problem except his trackball would not scroll down.
The trackball on the Eris seems to be really sensitive and any pivoting force placed on the usb cable when it's plugged in seems to be the culprit. Just swap out your phone for a new one at a Verizon store and you'll be good to go.

This is a method for technically sophisticated users; if you are intimidated by it, then DON'T USE IT.
(The author of that method - me - will not offer spoon-feeding services.)
There is a chance that ROM Manager/Clockwork recovery will work without a trackball, but I don't use that, and in any event you need to be rooted to install that, so there is a chicken-and-egg problem in proposing it as a work-around.

If your trackball is rooted please do not go further in the process... simply run the RUU and go back to 1.5 or 2.1 and return your phone for a new one/ Incredible.

I was going to offer the OP the same advice, except for one thing: he didn't mention whether or not the trackball problem is also present with the stock O/S booted.
In addition to lots of reports from folks that clearly have broken/bad trackballs, there have also been multiple reports from people that experience scrolling problems with the trackball only when Amon_RA is booted - those folks are sort of SOL when it comes to a return, as they can't demonstrate the problem occurs with factory software.
But, yeah - if it is broken in both Amon_RA and the stock O/S, the OP should try and get a replacement phone. (Ugh! From the looks of recent reports, the OP might just end up with a "refurb" that also has a broken trackball)
bftb0
No way i can return it. im not the original owner, i bought it off of a friend for $20 lol, he thought it was broken but it just needed a new battery. the trackball scrolls left and right just not up or down, and it does this whether im in Amon_RA or not. its just the track ball is broken. I consider myself pretty "tech sophisticated" so ill try bftb0's first word of advice and see if that will work. Thanks for the help guys. if it doesnt work i guess im just SOL on getting my Eris rooted. Oh well, im due an upgrade and will probably get the droid 2 anyway but i was hoping to get the eris going.
EDIT: LOL go figure my luck here...my USB port is also gimped, like as in doesnt work at all, i charge my batteries on battery cradles that plug in the wall, and the method of flashing a zip without using the trackball requires you to connect your phone to your computer with usb cable, so im SOL. Thanks for trying guys, any other help (doubtful there is any) would be much appreciated.
So i opened up the app drawer in landscape and had an idea. is there anyway someone could mod the 1 click root thing so that the recovery operates in landscape? because since my trackball scrolls left and right i could then scroll "down" to the flash from sd card option, if it was in landscape.
use clockwork mod. be warned tho people have reported that using that their phone has bricked. but i didnt have problems with it when i was waiting on my referb with a working trackball. Call verizon and tell them your trackball is screwed up scrolling or not scrolling whatever its doing.

How do i install clockwork on an eris? ive looked around but everythings for the facsinate or aria or EVO
i had similar issues with my trackball not responding in recovery earlier this week
did some searching and found that i had to connect the usb cable and try some gentle wiggling - the usb port is so close to the trackball that it sometimes affects how the ball's movement is read
doesnt need to be plugged into PC, just the part that connects to the phone
i wanted to update Kaosfroyo to v38 and i had no control when navigating recovery screen or it would scroll to the bottom of the list without me touching anything
after doing some investigation i booted into recovery with the usb connected and held the plug where it connects to phone and tried holding the cord at different angles until it responded as i needed it to and presto! now running KF38 with no trackball issues
XDA has had all of the answers to my Eris problems so far, just have to do some digging

[Q] hardware lock vibrant bricked

Okay, so I installed the hardware unlock update.zip but flashed eugene's unofficial jk2 which removed it. Unfortunately, it is now bricked as well, no voodoo or anything, have no idea what went wrong. Can I send this to tmobile on account that I had a hardware locked phone for replacement in this state?
Have you tried Odin yet? That has saved my ass when I bricked my phone. Vibrants are pretty tough. I'm sure you can fix it without getting a replacement.
Sent from my SGH-T959 using XDA App
Yeah, I had a ROM break recovery, but you're good as long as download mode still works. Give it a shot. My method is to remove the batt, plug in the cable, hold down both volume buttons and pop in the battery.
How can you check to see if your particular Vibrant is hardware locked?
I just bought one (after migrating from the HD2) and I'm trying to wrap my head around all the new flash tools, etc. Android seems much more complicated than Windows Mobile via HSPL.

Hardware locked means the hardware doesn't respond at all. I've never heard of any genuine case of someone getting their Vibrant hardware locked except developers. Even then it is EXTREMELY rare.
Most people end up with their phone going into a bootloop which can be fixed by reflashing a rom in recovery or restoring through Odin.
The rest are "soft bricked" meaning they have no recovery or boot. General this is caused by people flashing non-voodoo roms/kernels on top of a voodoo-enabled kernel or flashing a 2.1 nandroid on a 2.2 rom/kernel. In this case you can still get into download mode (hold both volume buttons then plug in usb cable) and restore through odin.

hardware locked is referring to vibrants that cannot go into Recovery Mode, or Download using the volume, and power buttons.
To test this, Turn off your phone completely.
Then PRESS AND HOLD BOTH VOLUME KEYS ALONG WITH THE POWER BUTTON
it will boot up, it will give you the normal VIBRANT samsung screen, wait a while, the screen turns black, thats when you SHOULD let go of all buttons, but if you don't no worries, keep holding it, and it'll go back to vibrant and samsung screen and let go this time.
If this doesn't work the first time, then try it a few more times, you may just be doing it wrong and not having the hardware locked.
I had a Vibrant with USB connectivity issues, and when I called t-mobile, I lied and said my phone was unresponsive and would not turn on. They said they would send me a replacement right away, and I got it within 3 days. This was without insurance btw.
Just tell them it won't boot.

[Q] Asked With My Apologies: Factory Default an HTC EVO 4G LTE with No OS from TWRP

Dear Whom Can Help,
My sincere apologies if this thread feels redundant, but other threads dealing with restoring this phone are starting from steps well beyond an initial, and/or are using jargon that is at opaque at best from an outsider...
To reduce to salient points:
I bought a used HTC Evo 4G LTE through Glyde.com to port it over to Ting. The previous owner must have been one of your folk, a phone modder / tinkerer / developer / what have you, because it came in an obviously altered state. (Something called Beanstalk loading, terminal apps, etc.)
I don't want any of this. I respect those that want to root and modify their phone, and as a security and a network design consultant I understand the concepts behind all of it, but I also know when and where I want to apply my time. And I don't want to spend it learning about rooting and messing with my phone. And even if I do want to root it someday, I want to root it from scratch myself, not hope that the last person to have the phone didn't put anything nefarious on it (unlikely) or just did stuff I don't understand (likelier).
So I want the phone back to a completely clean factory state. But I don't know any of the precepts and assumptions that all the "unrooting" conversations I've seen have and make. (Basically, all the unrooting stuff assumes you were the one that rooted it, and so already know the jargon.)
Here's where I'm at:
HTC Evo 4G LTE. The phone is in TMRP v2.3.1.0. There are no packages to restore. There is no external microSD card (I can certainly buy one if it's required). I cannot even reboot, as there is "No OS Installed! Are you sure you wish to reboot?"* I can connect the phone via USB to my Windows laptop, if I would need to copy files to it or something.
So, I'm looking to, whether within TWRP or copying a ROM and rebooting the phone or whatever, have the phone back to naked, like I bought it fresh and new, state.
Can someone help me do this? The other questions along these lines point to websites like shipped-roms.com that have pretty names listed like Runnymede and Puccini, but nowhere to explain that my phone is Shooter or Supersonic or what have you. And while I'm pretty computer-savvy, I don't pretend to have any idea what the referents are to statements like "Like how do I get back to fully stock? Or should I be trying to re-root to RUU again? Moonshine doesn't recognize my device in fastboot us..."
I appreciate anyone's time, so I don't have to return this phone. I have already spent a good three-plus hours trying to tackle this, and I fear when I die and my life is flashing before my eyes, this time will be the most boring of the whole lot of it.
Thanks greatly for anyone's time,
Me
* Now, I am aware that I pretty much brought the phone to a worse place, with no OS / no restore points or whatever you kids these days call them, probably while I was trying to restore it to a factory default, which I thought was going to be as simple as clicking on the factory reset option within Android. In any case, yes I made it worse. But I'm at where I'm at, and it's still the dude's fault who sold me a phone without reverting it.
Power the phone completely off. Once off, press the volume down+power button and list all the info displayed on the screen. Then we'll go from there.
If you need to get your phone up & running right now, click the last link in my sig.
Also, I've never flashed to a different carrier, but I believe your phone must be rooted to do so, so at this point you just need to get your phone up and running by flashing a ROM.

Thanks for your insanely quick reply. Luckily, I just got this phone and haven't activated it yet or anything, so there's not a huge time pressure, though I may have to return it.
Unluckily - this is going to sound like incompetence but I swear it's not - I powered off and rebooted but it's simply hanging on the "HTC quietly brilliant" splash screen, rather than listing any system attributes. This may be because the volume down button (I've just noticed now) may not be depressing properly - up has an actual 'click' feel, but down does not.
I'll keep trying to reboot it with the volume down button depressed.
Thanks much for your response!

Ting is a Sprint MVNO, and normally doesn't require rooted phones, just a Sprint-compatible one. There's a little work you have to do on the front-end to activate it with Ting, but it's usually minor. I was worried that the rooting that was done to do this phone could actually **prevent** activation with Ting, which was one reason I was looking to restore to factory state.
It shouldn't affect you being able to flash to Ting.

Audible sigh. No luck on the reboot - I hold power for ten seconds, screen goes black, then a vibration and the "HTC quietly brilliant" splash screen, but it stays there. Holding the Volume Down button before, during, or after seems to have no effect; again, it may be because the volume down button is bad - I can feel volume up click, but volume down is mushy. (Since it wasn't my phone until today, I don't actually know if the button was working or not.)
ACK
Once the screen goes black hold the volume down button in. If nothing happens, well, there are obviously other issues.

The phone simply reboots to the splash screen.
I guess I'll just return the phone to the seller. Thanks for your time!

Make sure fastboot is UNchecked in setting->power then try again.
If fastboot is checked it won't go to bootloader

I appreciate that, but with all due respect I don't know what that means... there's nothing to check or uncheck. I was once in TWRP, if that's where the 'fastboot' option was, but after FinZ28's recommendation to "Power the phone completely off. Once off, press the volume down+power button and list all the info displayed on the screen", the phone simply boots to the "HTC quietly brilliant" splash screen and does nothing else. I can't re-access TWRP, or anything else, for that matter.
Thanks for your time!
Ok try this, power down let it go completely off then press the power button and vol down button release the power button after 3 seconds while still holding the vol down and see if it will boot to bootloader

The phone doesn't have a ROM installed, it seems.

Thanks. I tried that / trying right right no, to no avail. I hold "power" and "volume down", let go of "power" while still holding "volume down", and it simply goes to the "htc quietly brilliant" splash screen. It stays there until the battery dies.
When the phone's battery died, and I plugged it in again, the three 'hard' buttons at the bottom did flash, but then again the phone goes to the splash screen and stays there, seemingly no bootloader / other information.

No ROM, I wouldn't think; there was one when I first got the phone yesterday, but clearly I inadvertently deleted it when trying to revert the phone back to a clean slate. My bad on that, though the seller should never have sold me a rooted phone with a bunch of unknown apps on it in the first place (at least without indicating it was a rooted phone, which I wouldn't have chosen to purchase in the first place).
Thanks for your time!
