reducing background tasks/stopping from opening - Droid Eris Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I am running CELB 3.9, and i noticed that if i watch my task list in systempanel, bunches of background tasks open after i use email/messaging that noticeably slow down my phone. They are:
maps
facebook
youtube
google search
pandora (wtf?)
shazam
Why are these opening when i do things not related to any of them? How do i stop it?

Most of those are probably settings you need to tweak in each app. Google search I just uninstall. If you get Titanium Backup pro you can freeze apps.

ah, i'll check in some of them to see what settings they have. If not i'll see what titanium backup has. Does goggles use google search or anything? I use that once and awhile and if i can keep it i'd like to.

I have never run into issues for lack of Google Search, you can back it up with TB, if you run into a problem restore.

Which of these processes are safe to kill?

Hi,
I'm trying to see which processes are safe to kill and which are not so I can put them on the ignore list so they don't get killed
I've already added a couple ones which where obvious, but I don't know what to do with a couple others...
1) The first set are "Gmail Storage" and "Calendar Storage". These processes are always running on the background. I have auto sync of the calendar and contacts but not for e-mail, why is the gmail storage running?
Anyway, are they safe to kill or should be put in the ignore list?
2) The second set are "DCS Utility Component" and "DRM Protected Content Storage". What are these for? Does anyone know? They are constantly popping up in the process list... Save to kill or should be ignored?
3) Lastly, "Settings" and "Messages" are always in the background too, which I don't understand... Why are they on the background why not "empty" as most other apps? Specially "Messages", why is that app always on the background, what for? Safe to kill these 2 or ignore also?
I'm not 100% sure about Calendar Storage, but GMail Storage should be fine to kill. It will restart when you open the GMail app... I would assume Calendar Storage is the same.
I'm not sure what DCS Utility Component is, but DRM Content Storage is something to do with the storage of DRM music (ie, purchased from the Amazon store, for instance.) If you don't use the Amazon store (or other DRM source) for your mp3s, this process should be fine to kill. Maybe even if you do...
I'm not sure about Settings, but Messages is safe to kill. It will start again when you receive a text message or you open the Messages app.
Yeah, I don't use DRM music, I don't use music at all for the time being so I don't understand why that process does even appear...
By the way, the "Gmail Storage" also shows up when running the calendar app...
Thank you for your help
i don;t know if this helps, but....
Don;t forget that many widgets use background provcesses to work.
Do you have a music widget on yone of your homescreens? cos that would start to e music process up when you start the phone.
Same for any other widgets you have on your screens. If you don;t use them, get rid of them so that they are not holding processes open in the background.
settings will keep appearing, probably linked to the wifi and mobile network switches.
Messages will appear if you have the message widget on a homescreen.
also, i think the gmail storage process is linked to all Google apps isnt it? or is that google services that i am thinking of?

I don't though... But texting is something I do a lot so I'll just ignore it too
Thanks for your input.
Welcome.
sorry it wasn't more helpful

[Q] Any recommended startup apps?

I have noticed that there are numerous services that would start up by themselves such as alarm, timer, email, messaging, my uploads, timescape etc, I would also like to disable off these default services since I'm using handcent sms and k9 for sms and email services and adw launcher.
Is anyone using any free app (that doesnt require root) similar to startup auditor to disable services from automatically starting up? I used the free version which only allows 5 services to be disabled.
Also what are the other services/apps that I can disable safely since I see other services like com.sonyericsson.xxxxx, or android.process.xxxx? Also what does "My Uploads" do exactly?
I personally use Autorun killer, but it doesn't list anything like com.sonyericsson.xxxx, only normal apk names.. You may have to fork out for the paid version of startup auditor!
Or I imagine that some of the custom ROM's out there would have modified autostart lists?
I have yet to root my x10 mini pro, so I'm unable to use AutoKiller, unfortunately. Its really annoying to have all these services started up.
So far, Startup Auditor doesnt seem all that effective. I have disable some of the apps but still they do occassionally show up in the Task Manager. Sigh.

[Q]Closing Programs in RAM for ever

Hi
i have a rooted android 4.0.4,LG Nitro HD
i installed too many apps in my phone
my problem is the programs and tasks which run in my RAM
for example i dont want yahoo gmail facebook apps run in my memory and check my notifications automatically when internet is available
it seems good but i dont want it happen
i just want to have these apps and run them whenever i need them
i tried to force close applications , but when i reset the phone all apps will run again
some application like google+ or youtube dont close at all
How can i manage my memory and apps in my favor ?
maybe go to settings, accounts and sync, and make sure that these apps aren't on auto-sync?
If as you say you have too many apps your best option is to uninstall those apps that you don't absolutely need.
It sounds like you're asking for two things: you don't want those apps to automatically sync and you don't want those apps to automatically start up. For syncing turn off the auto sync settings for those apps so that they will only update manually. Then use an app like Autostarts, SystemCleanup, or Gemini App Manager to stop those apps from automatically starting (on boot, after a change in your connectivity, etc.). If that doesn't work you could try freezing the app then unfreezing them as needed. You can use an app like App Quarantine to create widgets to freeze/unfreeze a particular app with one click.
Doing this will only get you so far. Like I said before you'll get the best results by getting rid of all unnecessary apps.

yes, it is
as long as you didn't delete playstore
I just had to uninstall/disable Google+ app to get rid of the annoying "Google Photos" app. I think the "auto awesome" is feature is f****** stupid. I just spent an hour crawling through my /system/app directory looking for the package to delete as root, after I found out that it wasn't easily disabled/uninstalled like any regular app.
I can't wait until Ubuntu mobile is more stable. When it is, I am ditching Android. I'm tired of how companies like Google, Amazon, Facebook, etc., all want to snoop on every bit of your private photos, emails, text messages, etc. They all want to be your "one and only" application, and that's unrealistic.
Sorry, I'm a bit annoyed right now. I don't mind Google+ as a social platform, but I do think it was stupid of them to force their stupid photo **** onto the whole world by making it a mandatory part of Google+ mobile app. Screw that...I will just use the mobile site if necessary.
Certain phones can bootloop if you uninstall the wrong Google apps. You should always ask what kind of phone and update before saying everything is ok. It is rare, but some LG phones will soft brick with the Security Error if you uninstall typically innocuous looking Google apps like Google Books.

[Q] Google Play Music Always Running In The Background

Hey Guys,
Is there anyway to stop Google Play Music from running in the background? I know I could disable the app, but I use it every so often. It is always on when I go to the task manager, active applications. Any suggestions?
I use Greenify to hibernate Google Music and many other apps. Get it from Google Play. https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.oasisfeng.greenify

I converted it to a user application with Titanium BU, it is now behaving itself.
