As soon as i got this phone I rooted it and flashed xtr rom because it looked reliable and stable. Which it was the rom was beautiful but i got the froyo bug and decided to move on to 2.2. I installed kaos froyo and love it but there are a certain things i miss specifically the htc contact app which allowed me to merge contacts from all my different sources and really minimize doubled up contacts. Is there anyway to get the htc contact app on a 2.2 rom without sense that doesn't involve flashing? Is there an apk or an apk for a similar contact app?
TLDR: Can i install HTC contact app on Kaos Froyo rom?

Unfortunately, there isn't any way of getting the HTC Dialer (which is what you're looking for) on a non-Sense based ROM. It would have to be ported, and noone has been able to do so. It may be hard or impossible without the original source code.
I have used Dialer One in the past, which is a lot more like the Sense Dialer. I don't know for sure if it has the feature you're looking for, but there's a free version on the Market. Check it out.
Edit: FYI in case you're curious enough to try putting the HTC Dialer on other ROMs anyway, forget it, I've already tried it. It's just not that easy.

What about xtr rom? It's a vanilla rom with the htc dialer. It might be sort of hybrid but it uses launcher pro (not sense) and the same dialer. I was kind of upset the htc dialer has so many little features that you take for granted until they are gone.

It is still based on the HTC framework, which is why so much of the HTC stuff is still present and works.
I really miss the HTC Alarm/Timer/etc app, too. Sigh...
Just flash xtrSense and switch to Launcher Pro or something.

I'm using Red Glass, Workshed's themed version of his FroShedYo v8: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=824160
I may switch to his Vanilla, just because it's based off a newer CM build.

I think he's hoping to get it or an equivalent on a 2.2-based ROM. As much as I like xtrSENSE and xtrROM, I like CM6.x-based ROMs because of the ease of access to toggle widgets in the notification menu, Froyo-native Apps2SD, and the Froyo-native USB tethering, which has been working much better for me than any other kind or method of tethering recently, and tethering is my only internet ATM.
I don't know if the OP likes the same things out of Froyo ROMs or not, but I would assume he doesn't want to go back to more stock for anything more than the HTC alarm clock and/or contacts.

Thank you for the help. Xtr sense with launcher pro is almost equivalently the xtr rom. You hit the nail on the head perfectly as well. I love the stability smoothness and just all around solidness of the xtrroms sense and not. I just feel like i'm missing out when i roll 2.1 there is not much but just a lot of little things above ones mentioned are big. I'm going to rock xtr again for a little then switch to a 2.2 maybe kaos again or possibly what you use and weigh out what i like about both. I would drop both options if we can get a daily use gingerbread though.

Hiya, I was using vanilla 2.2 for a very long time however I started to miss the great phone application in Sense so I have switched over to a 2.1 sense rom (Chocolate Eclair). I would however love to be running vanilla 2.2, so is there any way of getting the sense phone application in vanilla android or perhaps just an equally good phone application?

The HTC Phone application will only work on Sense ROMs.
Try Dialer One on the market.
Thanks
Ah, I remember someone mentioned that app to me before, was trying to remember it's name, testing it out now, looks pretty nice. Thanks a lot

This is the exact reason im not using CM7, if they could bring this feature I would use it but I doubt its going to happen because blur is not open source which makes porting any or all parts of it pretty much impossible.. Feel free to correct me if Im wrong.

No. There are other roms that will give you customization and Blur, though.
There are a lot of 'locate my phone' market apps
https://market.android.com/search?q=locate+phone&so=1&c=apps
One popular app with such a feature is Lookout Security & Antivirus. If you don't want the antivirus/wiping part, Where's my droid is way more simple and works nicely too.
thanks, thats a shame Blur is not opensource, i imagine if the devs here got hold of it it could be made awesome! which Roms do use it, and are comparable in performance/features to CM7, if there are any?
thanks
Aura is a great ROM. There is a Blur version which you would probably want, and also Accounts and Debloat versions.

Well, the easy part would be downloading parts of blur.
The HARD part, however, would be reintegrating all the frameworks and filelinks and etc etc etc etc into CM7 to actually have those parts work. It is so close to impossible to completely deblur a motoblur rom that it isn't worth the effort. The other direction is also true.
Your better off checking the market out for apps to see if you can replace those missing features without the hassle of trying to get MB back on first...

I could be wrong - and if I am, I'm sure somebody will speak up, but in general, anything other than CM7 and other AOSP projects will be based on the motoblur framework. They may pull out apps and stuff, but the framework is there.
I think this would include things like Alien, Homebase, Aura, etc.
CM7 is built from the ground up, so it doesn't have all of the blur stuff in it.
A lot of the other ROMs have versions that are less deblurred or have separate downloads you can flash that will include some of the blur apps and functionality.
As far as performance, CM7 is the best I've run, but that makes sense because it is lightweight compared to ROMS that include all of the additional blur framework/functionality.
Of course on this phone, there really isn't any ROM I've used that seems "slow". For me it is more about preferences and features.
Home base is a good rom too, with bur and deblured versions.
If you can install blur, you drops all good things from cm7 ;-)

Would it be possible to use the contact and dialer from an AOSP rom on a sense rom. I tried using the ones from CM7 and am having some issues.
Edit: I figured it out and have AOSP contacts and dialer now working on a Sense 3.0 Rom incase anyone wants it!
Not saying I particularly want it but why offer it but share no information on how to do it?
Sent from my PG86100 using XDA App
I did it that way because I didn't make the mod. The thread started out because I was having issues getting the AOSP contacts and dialer to work on my phone, so I was looking for help. After I figured it out I thought I would see if anyone was intreasted in this mod and I can send them the file or explain how they can get them. I used the contacts from CM7 which includes the dialer. If you use the dialer.apk from CM7 it will break your phone, Kills signal / service. I have the contacts pulled from that Rom if anyone wants it. I take no credit for it in any way.
im Interested!!! Hate the Rosie Dialer!!
I have a Rogers GSm version, dont know if that would affect anything
Here is the contacts apk. It is NOT flashable through recovery. Install using a file manager (like Astro) I did not create this so I take no credit for this. This came from CM7.

This is interesting. Many people including myself have wanted to have the option to integrate the aosp dialer/ contacts into a sense based rom since the good old Hero days but based on the way the two are integrated into Sense roms as a whole, this has never been possible.
I can't remember the technical reasons why, only that many concluded it wasn't much of a possibilty.
Anyway, if anyone else can confirm that we can now have these features integrated into Sense as the op states, that would be awedome.

There are a few issues with using the ASOP contacts with a sense rom. For instance joining contacts will cause a FC. I run a customized rom with as much sense removed as possible. To achieve this I have modified the ASOP contacts to work better on sense. I've never released the modified contacts because I don't have time to support it. The features I use work fine now (for instance the join fc is fixed) ; however, I'm sure there are other issues and at the moment I have no time to resolve anything found.
If people are willing to live with what you get is what you get I can post my modified contacts tonight after work.
HtcDialer still needs to be installed. I can also post a version of this modded to hide the icon from the app drawer and to stop it from being used for certain functions (a convenience feature so I don't have to select the ASOP contacts as the default)

I dont have a problem with sense or anything, I just like to have options and I really like the look of stock Android.
I havent found a solution as to why I cant flash Cyanogenmod 9/10 betas yet (keeps aborting installation), so I need to do this without flashing a new ROM.
Im currently running viperROM IC3D Beta 3. Im not sure if its promoted to be stable, but so far it is for me. And its also using Sense 3.6 so it should be the same if I was running the stock ICS OTA update, I assume.
So is there a way to disable/remove sense without installing a new ROM?
A launcher wont do it for me. All that does is change the home screen, not the actual shell of the OS.
Thanks is advance!
Get a new phone, or change your rom.
Since sense is integrated, you need a whole new rom if you dont want it.
The only thing you can disable with sense is the sense launcher.

There are some desensitizing scripts out there that you can find and tailor to your needs, but I would just find a ROM that is already desensitized. Some people swear by the scripts; others have issues getting them to work right.
Does anyone know how to add some sense feature to the google play rom ?
Mainly interested in adding sense camera software to a gpe rom, also I would like to know how to make the back button kill the current app like on sense, how to remove the battery icon like sense, and how to just show the battery percentage in numbers only with no battery icon around the numbers like I can on sense roms, also I like the sense dialer over the gpe dialer, another feature would be to be able to hold down the home button to bring up the menu at any time.
I had tried the gpe rom on my old m7 kit kat and these were features that I could not add or figure out how to do with the gpe.
But now being on the m8 I would like to run the gpe but I want the features I listed that I like that I have with sense roms such as the viperone I normally run.
Basically I like how the gpe didnt eat up my phones memory and runs a lot faster and smoother than sense roms.
Either that or if there is a way to remove as much htc crap as possible such as back up and all the garbage I never use, there is so much that it would take me a month to physically go through and try removing then see if it works ok or if I need to unfreeze the htc apps or restore a back up allowing them back on. I already have all the social media stuff removed as much as possible.
I just want a clean rom with no crap that is not 100% required for the rom to run, but yet I still want the sense options that I listed above.
If you do not understand why I want to remove as much bloat as possible, then please do not post on this page, because I do not want anyone asking why trying to say they do not think there is no need to, well please respect that this is my posting and yes you are entitled to your own opinion but you can post whatever you want just please put it on your own posting as I do not want any posting like that, so please respect my posting and post those opinions elsewhere thank you.
Short answer is that porting Sense apps (such as the camera) to GPE or AOSP ROMs can't be done. Longer answer is that the Sense apps are purposely heavily tied to the Sense framework. Technically, just about anything is "possible" but porting it would require many hours of tedious work by the right developer(s) for something that is probably not popularly demanded.
Your best bet may be to try a ROM like Viper, InsertCoin, etc. which have many options to remove various Sense apps and (when applicable) replace them with the "vanilla" Google versions.
Another possibility that I have seen on other devices, is that a developer would release a "de-Sensified" ROM which would still have the Sense framework intact, but remove many of the Sense apps, and giving the ROM an overall GPE/AOSP look and feel, while keeping the features that many folks desire. Of course, there is the rub: what some people may see as "crap" may be desired by others. The camera is the most frequent request. But what Sense components get removed versus what gets kept is subjective. Which just brings me back to a ROM like Viper, InsertCoin, etc. which give you the options to choose for yourself what to remove.
You are better off staying sense and using Google launcher and Google apps

The thing is though that with the gpe roms the phone is a lot faster and has more free memory. Right now I have to use google voice for personal reasons and with things skimmed down as much as I can the phone is still being slowed down with most of the memory being used. I wish they would have went with 3gigs of memory like samsung. I do a lot of work stuff on my phone and everything I use is what I require, nothing to get rid of other than some htc bloat that I could get away with ditching.

Try freezing the unwanted apps with Titanium Backup first. Then if you test for a while, and see no ill effects than remove the app in question. Or just keep it frozen. In fact, I don't think there is much benefit to removing vs. freezing in this case.

The only way around this, that I see, is for someone to tell you one by one what apps/processes are safe to remove or freeze. Someone might know this, and chime in. But the only way they would have found out, would be to do it trial and error as we've already discussed. So you can wait around for something that may or may not happen, or just start doing it yourself. Your choice.
