Changing the boot animation - Defy Themes and Apps

Got rid of the blur boot animation.
Grabbed this one:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=648555
And amended the timing for stock ghz
Just push it to system/media
Proves the concept. Need to work on some Defy specific artwork.
[Edit] -Now updated with defy specific art.

i know im missing something here...
I can rename the original bootanimation.zip to bootanimation1.zip using adb.
put when i try to push the new file i get
"C:\android-sdk-windows\tools>adb push bootanimation.zip /system/media
failed to copy 'bootanimation.zip' to '/system/media/bootanimation.zip': Permission denied"
do I need to do anything to make the file system r/w?

I think you need to be root to do that.
Sent from my MB525 using XDA App

you need root and you will need to activate su permission i imagine?
anyway the way i did it was put it on my sdcard rename the original using "mv" and then copied the new one over using "cp"

Thanks, got it working now.
I did mount it rw and could rename the files, just couldnt mv the file from the sdcard but cp seemed to work.

Just grab "Boot Animation Changer" from Market and boom, change all you want. I partial to the Super Mario one...

Thank you for this really nice boot animation, I really hated the blurry [blur].

Nice boot animation!!!
hope it had a defy WVGA honeycomb version~

This has to be specific to the Defy device correct? I saw the custom boot on the main page and wanted it but I thought it probably wont have the right dimensions and bootloop my defy or something...
Im going to try yours.

Yes, it's the Defy version.

I have been playing about with this a little, as a result i have created two edited versions of the above theme.
The first one lists a processor of 800mhz with the dates 2011 showing as well as 2.1 eclair being booted and the second is as above but lists a 1000mhz processor.
I know someone else has done a 1000mhz with 2011 dates (all though he has forgotten to change the 2010 shown on the bottom of the screen to 2011) also lists 2.2 froyo.
This theme is not mine i just updated it a little for users using 2.1 who want the dates updated with an option of picking a processor size.

Very nice. Thanks

hi.....so thx for instructions

Works great, thanks!

Custom Boot Animations

For anyone wondering how to replace your bootanimation, just mount your system partition either with Clockwork Recovery or root explorer and push a bootanimation.zip to /system/customize/resource/TMUS_bootanimation.zip
Here are a couple you can use:
My Evo 4g Bootanimation Thread - Sorry some say Evo 4g.
SamJamz BootAnimation Thread
Basically any bootanimation from a phone that is 480x800 should fit just fine.

Do you push the file while in recovery mode? Kinda confused about that part.
Edit: Got it, yep, you have to be in recovery to accomplish this.

Our phones are a little bit different... our bootanimation is located at system/customize/resource and renamed bootanimation.zip to TMUS_bootanimation.zip I did all this thru root explorer no adb required!
just incase, I also copied the original file I was replacing to my sdcard (if ever I wanted to go back)
Hope this helps
Here's one of my favs, R2d2 boot animation. It's already named correctly, just use root explorer, and make sure the permission is right. Ahh, can't upload zip from the app, I will when I get to my cpu
Thanks for this!
I now have a sweet Android (Cyanogen theme - in prep for CM release ) boot animation in place of the lame stock "my" scribble.
Now all I'd like to do for boot is change the stock splash screen. I've found one to use, but the instructions for applying are for the Evo and not sure I want to risk jacking something up if it's not right. It states to use fastboot to flash the splash screen onto the phone, replacing the stock. To those who know - does that sound right? Where is the stock splash located so I can back it up to my sdcard first?
Any pointers appreciated!
it looks like it u have to be permarooted for the changes to stick :-\

I am also in root explorer and went thru the needed folders till I got to bootanimation folder. How do you paste the renamed animation into that folder? (don't want to screw it up) copy from my sd card and paste it into the folder? Do i paste it into the folder and then tap on (mount rw)? Or do I tap on (mount rw) then hit paste. Rookie worried I might screw it up if do it wrong.

This is fantastic! I just put it on my NC and I love it! I might reboot just so i can see it. Thanks for sharing.
A handy command for testing (which should be done in ADB SHELL ONLY) is "start bootanim" and "stop bootanim". The reason I say adb shell only, is that you can't really stop the animation if you start it from within a terminal app on the nook.

Kit, have you posted the CM7 one on the CyanogenMod forums? Who knows, maybe they'd use it. It's really nice, the only thing I don't care for is the text you used for the "POWERED BY"... but that's just personal preference.
Out of curiosity, what software do you use to create those?
How come when I use the "start bootanim" command the animation is so laggy?

But I also made one with an eclair logo instead of Cyanogen one:

I create these in AfterEffects, by the way.

if you're using rootexplorer, or similar app, you could go into /data/local and delete the bootanimation.zip, then paste the bootanimation.zip you want to use there, and reboot, it should work just the same
just make sure you rename the animation zip you want to use to bootanimation.zip

[Q] Boot animation without AT&T logo?

Does anyone have a working bootanimation.zip without the AT&T logo? I tried editing the original one but I ended up with a blank boot animation screen.
you should be able to search the forum for whatever boot animation you want. Granted they won't be the proper resolution if you pick one with black edges you will be fine. I was using one on a previous flash just fine.
I'll try to find the thread where I found mine

I tried those animations and they worked fine, but I still wish I could keep the original animation.
Boot Animations, while can be tricky and a headache, are customizable if you can adjust the image sizes, etc.
For example, the Motorola Atrix can use up to 540x960 for the resolution. You can also add custom sounds at load by saving an OGG audio file to /system/media (same location as the bootanimation.zip) and adding it accordingly to the desc.txt file. Below is an example.
Code:
540 960 1
p 1 10 part0
s autodestruct.ogg
p 0 0 part1
The first line is the resolution and the frames per second.
Code:
"540 960" Resolution "1" Frames Per Second (each individual image)
The second line defines a Part. For example, the first animation you want to play. So far for me, this is the animation AFTER the Dual Core logo that plays when I've made mine.
Code:
"p" Depicts this is a Part "1" Repeat this many times (0 is infinite) "10" is the delay in frames before the next Part "part0" is the directory within the zip to load this part from
So far easy right? The next line, is for the audio file. If the OGG has a loop point, the audio will loop until the Part is over that it plays within.
Code:
"s" Depicts a sound "autodestruct.ogg" The filename to load from /system/media
A few more examples of loading parts............
To load a Part that is a single image, that loops till boot is done, use this
Code:
p 0 0 "directory_name_here"
I'll try to post some example bootanimation.zip files with explanations if I get time. I've only made a couple so far for my company out of boredom.

I recommend using your file explorer to rename the original bootanimation.zip on your phone to something like bootanimation_original.zip then put in your custom if you have any worries.
That way, if you go to update just rename custom to bootanimation_custom.zip and restore the original.
Personally, I do not know if the boot animation file will affect updates, but that is a failsafe for you just in case.

Ohh, so what you want is the default bootanimation without the ATT part!
I've personally never worked with bootanimations before, but using MrSER's guide above, i'll try to do that for you.

EDIT 2: figured it out. if you're using WinRAR, when you go to make a .zip, choose "store" instead of "normal" compression, and it should work just fine. I have attached the Default bootanimation.zip without the ATT part

My bad mate, forgot to mention that. I make mine with Winzip 15 Pro and set it to No Compression (from my experience, no compression is a requirement).
I may end up doing a tutorial on all this on my blog. If I do, I'll post a copy here and link as well (I like screenshots on my blog, lol).

Just find a boot animation that you like, download the zip file, rename it to bootanimation.zip and then go into your system/media folder and change the name of the current bootanimation to anything you want like bootanimationold.zip. Then put the new zip file in the system/media folder and there you go. You do not need to move the old boot animation file as long as you change the name.
of course, the method I'm describing is relevant if you have rooted your phone and you have something like Root Explorer, otherwise you will need to use adb, but still you need root.

Edit: works, awesome thx
this is by far my favorite boot animation, thanks so much for this
i have two questions though, one a lot of times when booting up the animation can lag slightly, is there any tweaks i can do to improve the performance or is this generally how it goes for everyone?
my other question is more of a request actually, I would like the version that you had mentioned that did not have the spinning 3d letters, is that still available somewhere? i didn't see a link
I assume it's because it's loading stuff in the background.
Edit: I just installed it, and yeah, it is noticeable. You can clearly tell where the AT&T Logo is supposed to display because it gets real smooth.
But if you look at the original loader, its noticeable that its also laggy. It's just less because there isn't much to look at. It's like if the Windows 7 boot animation lagged, you can't really notice since there is almost no noticeable difference between frames.
OMG I LOEV YOU NOTACH!! you've answered my prayers! now to dl and try this out
edit: wow looks beautiful man good job!!! still a bit laggy initially i wonder if there are some tweaks i can do
edit2: second and third boots were much faster, but still a bit choppy

Maybe try downloading the bootanimation again? Sounds like you're doing everything else right...... I have seen that some roms have the bootanimation in /data/local.
Added the blue one, looks nice, just need to add a sound to it, lol
Thanks given!
There's a zip file on the 3rd page of that thread. Is that okay to flash through recovery?

I wouldn't just because it was made for another phone. If you decide to try it, make a nandroid backup first!
I'm just having trouble covering the basics. I try renaming the original animation to .bak, but I'm getting denied. I can't swap files through Astro or ES Explorer.

It's just a boot animation, doesn't matter if it was made for the G1.

I got time to loose, Ill try the green android one and report back once done...
Hmmm, Installed without issues, But made no change on my evo. Still has the ViperRom boot anim.
Yeah, I flashed the blue one through recovery with no problem, but no changes were made.
I do like the animation and hope to get it on my phone.
You have to mount the system as R/W to make changes. Also, not all roms have the bootanimation in the same place and/ or named the same thing (i.e. a Sensation bootanimation flashed through recovery isn't going to replace one named Sprint_bootanimation.zip).
Alright,
So after I remount, I can pull the original zip from /system/customize/resource
The new animation is on the sdcard. What's the proper syntax to push?
adb push / sdcard/Sprint_bootanimation.zip /system/customize/resource?
I got it, nevermind...
I just switched out the files from my PC once I pulled the original file.
It works now.
Thanks for sharing!
