Getting closer... - Vibrant Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Background information in case you haven't seen my other posts:
Had to recover from softbrick with ODIN. Done
Updated to Eugene's Froyo with root through ODIN. Done.
Installed ROM manager and flashed recovery. Done.
I cannot enter CW recovery at all.
When I get to USB mode and I open the files to look at them, I have Avatar on e: and everything else on f:. I noticed I have on the f: drive an external-sd and another folder that shows sd.
When I try to install packages to get to CW recovery i get this error message:
e: can't open
/sdcard/update.zip file or directory not valid.
I thought f: was my external sd and f: (w/avater on it) was the external sd. Could something have happened from one of my earlier ROMS that is still stuck on the internal sd ( I had 2.1 Bionix 1.9 with Jac's OCUV/OCLF with ext2 enabled).
Need help. I would love to flash Nero V3 or Eugene's Gingerbread, but since I can't even enter CW recovery, it won't be possible unless I do it through ODIN and I barely got through that without losing my marbles (ODIN is way over my head, but S15724N and FEARLESS1964 got me through it (Thanks to them again).
edit: wondering what would happen if i changed drive letters, or if i added the update.zip to the external card where avatar is?

I may have fixed my own problem. I moved ROM Manager to the internal phone memory through the apps management and it seems to be working. Antone know if I need to leave the update.zip from clockwork recovery in the root directory or can it be moved?

leave it there...its not gonna hurt anything...keep update.zip on the internal sd....really nothing but avatar should be on the external

[Q] idiot (me) w/ empty sdcard & inaccessible ext-sd, can't get anywhere

My Vibrant's internal sdcard was reporting corruption, so I put a fresh ROM (Macnut 12) on the external SD, rebooted into Clockwork, and formatted the SDcard, system & data partitions. Then went to install the ROM, but it turned out it wouldn't recognize the ext-sd card either! I get this error when i try to mount:
Code:
E:INFO is WRONGError mounting SDEXT:!
I've tried a different ext-sd, and even tried formatting that one on the computer (MBR partition scheme, FAT partition). Nothing is recognized by the phone.
Also when I try "mount USB storage" nothing shows up on my desktop either.
SO: I have an almost empty phone, and no way of putting any ROM whatsoever on there. Can anyone point me in the right direction?
note: i have a Mac, so AFAIK ODIN doesn't work for me.
I'm in "Clockwork 2.5.1.0 lagfix edition", and was previously rocking Eugene's Macnut R12 with the JFS+RFS lagfix.
thanks!

I also use a mac. You need to be careful how you delete and format your sd cards. I just deleted some stuff off my sd card by dragging it into the trash and it didnt free up any space on the sd card. I have also seen problems with formatting them with the mac also. Also ODIN is a great way to put things back to stock. you will need to use bootcamp to install windows on the partition. If I weere you I would still ODIN back to stock and reflash to make sure you dont have errors in the future
Format sd card through clockworkmod recovery. Itll wipe everything, but it should bring it back to being usable. Also heimdall works with mac right? I havent used heimdall but read its an open source rom flasher replacement for odin.

I was going to suggest Heimdall as well. You should be able to flash back to a stock firmware, then sort things out from there. If you want to do that and then report back here, we could help from there.
Information about Heimdall is available in this thread along with a link to download the program.
Good luck.

[Q] HELP!! Can't mount internal SD card!!

Here's my issue: I wanted to start with a fresh "slate" for flashing a custom ROM (I originally had TRIGGER+OVERSTOCK). I backed up my apps/settings and the current ROM, disabled the Voodoo lagfix and unrooted the phone. Then, I ODIN'd back to JFD. At this point I downloaded TitaniumBackup and ROM Manager. When I tried to mount the Internal SD card, nothing happened...just the external card mounted. I went back and checked my ODIN settings an noticed that I had left the "Re-Partition" box checked. Freaking out at this point, I then went ahead and rooted the phone, and checked the file system through the Super Manager app. All my data was still there!!! So I went ahead and used ADB to "pull" the TB and ROM Manager data onto my computer just in case. My question is: how do I get the internal SD card to mount correctly?? Any help would be HUGE!!! Thanks in advance for everything!

I can't really tell by your post, are you trying to mount your external sd onto your phone or onto your computer?
I have Odin'ed to JFD with repartition checked many times, and have never had your problem. If I were you, I would just go through and Odin again using a different JFD image (maybe you just had a bad flash, what version of Odin were you using?) As long as whatever you are flashing with Odin contains all the essential bits, repartitioning should not do anything too deadly to your phone. (I learned this the hard way, do not try to Odin and repartition with JI6, for example, because JI6 has no dbdata image included).
If you just want to troubleshoot your current install, check the "/etc/vold.fstab" and "/etc/vold.conf". I can't actually tell you what those two files should look like as I am currently running a 2.2.1 rom (I think the files should differ between versions of the OS, but I'm not sure).
I am a pretty big Linux and Android noob, but I'm pretty sure that those two files are responsible for mounting both sdcards onto your phone, at least partially. (I would have no idea where to look to fix it if it isn't mounting onto your computer.)
Sorry if any of my advice is off, like I mentioned a little earlier, I am a pretty big noob, albeit very interested in Android.
Sorry for the confusion....I'm attempting to mount my internal SD to my computer. As far as ODIN is concerned, I'm using 1.7 with the flash files from this post:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=734475&highlight=stock+odin
I've used this ODIN flash before without any issues, so I'm still a bit stumped on why I can't mount my SD card. I can see the entire file system from within my phone as well as through ADB, but (for whatever reason) cannot mount it to my PC. I am leaning towards the issue of the SD card being partitioned wrong. Any thoughts? Any ideas on how to repartition the internal SD back to "stock"? Thanks again for any help provided!
-Oryon007
That's actually the same JFD image I use. I would just use Odin to flash JFD again with the repartition checkbox checked. I'm pretty sure that that will solve your problem.
Make sure you use the pit file too, without that you will have serious issues if you are repartitioning.
I'll try this again, just in case I missed something the first time...wish me luck!! I'll let you know how this turned out, too!
-Oryon007
Alright, good luck. Did you use the pit file when you originally flashed JFD and repartitioned? Not using that file may have been why you had this problem.
Ok...so, no change with the internal SD. When I attempt to mount the SD cards to my PC, the only one that shows up is the external one. After unmounting them, I can still see both cards with filesystems. Could the internal SD have been partitioned incorrectly? If so, how do I get it repartitioned right?
EDIT: I did use both original files from here...
Okay, I'm sorry but I have no clue how to help you. Are you sure its not just your computer? You may have to try and get help from somebody more knowledgeable than me. Have you tried flashing any other rom through Odin over JFD?
Not yet...I wanted to make sure that it wasn't something that I was doing incorrectly through ODIN. Again, my ultimate goal in all this was to have a "clean slate" to install a custom ROM on; the catch I'm running into is that I can't mount the internal SD card to place the files on to flash through CWM, even though I can see all the files through the phone and through ADB. *sigh* Thanks for your help though! It's always nice to have help when you run into these issues...
EDIT: After trying to ODIN JI2 files, I get the following error upon boot of the phone in Recovery:
E:Can't mount /dev/block/stl10
(Invalid argument)
E:copy_dbdata_media:Can't mount DBDATA:
copy default media content failed.

Look at what I said at the end of the second paragraph, on the second post in the parentheses.
EDIT: Just flash a rom using Odin that does have a dbdata file. You probably checked repartition while flashing JI2.
Last night I was having a similar problem. While I wasnt flashing back to stock or anything, I could only get G: (external sd) to mount to my pc but not the F: (internal storage). Eventually I disabled USB Debugging, plugged in the USB cable from the pc, and it gives you 3 options for USB Mode: Kies, Media Player, Mass Storage. Once I selected mass storage, both internal and external sd cards mounted to the PC with no problem. Just remember to re-enable USB Debugging after.
Finally got it!!
Finally found the issue!! Only took me a week....lol
Going to manage my disk drives found that my PC wanted to assign a drive letter that was already assigned to a mapped network drive. *duh* Obviously not going to work. Reassigned the drive letter and voila!! I can mount my internal SD card!! w00t!!
That's really terrible and hilarious at the same time. Why wouldn't windows just pick another letter to map it to?

[SOLVED] CWM Sd problem

Trying to root my cousins Vibrant. It's rooted, and i flashed CWM from Rom manager, but for some reason on the computer it doesn't show the root of the sd card, no android related junk, and then when I try and flash a custom rom it doesn't show the zips on cwm and if i click /sd it errors and goes back.
Edit: nevermind, figured out when it's in mass storage it shows two different ones.

Need help recovering photos from bad vibrant

I'm trying to get files (my photos mostly) off the internal storage of my Vibrant. I don't care about getting the Vibrant working again, just getting my files off it. I can get into recovery mode, but mounting usb storage *does not work*, even tried unplugging and replugging the phone but no dice. I can install zips from the sd card (though it takes 5x longer than normal) but any ROM I install, stock, cyanogen, slim, etc. won't actually finish booting.
Because USB mounting doesn't work, I'd like to use CWM to copy all the files on the internal storage to the sd card. Then I can put the sd in another computer and get the files off. In CWM I can do a backup to sd, but that doesn't backup photos, just the rom. Is there a way to generally copy files from internal to the sd using CWM?
Also, the entire time I'm in recovery mode my PC makes the sound for a usb device being connected and then disconnected, assume that has something to do with the Vibrant being generally busted.
In summary:
Trying to recover files from vibrant phone storage
Can't boot any regular ROM
Can get into CWM recovery
USB mount in CWM recovery *does not work*
Can install zip from sd card
Can backup to sd card
Have a spare working vibrant for charging battery
Any ideas?
Okay I'll see if I can help any. First of all, can you successfully use Odin to return to stock firmware? Have you even attempted using Odin?
Can try using recuva or there is another one too but the XDA search is missing right now. Moped_Ryder usually recommends that one that I can't remember right now, but once the search button is back, I'll let you know what it is. Works like a charm. Droid recover or Droid Files, ahh I can't think of it but there is a solution on here somewhere.
Try a program called Android Commander.
Ive transferred files in CWM with it all the time.
Agreed with android commander. It has always worked for me. There are other solutions too with these new kernels these days. You can download Devil kernel or subzero via PC(They both include new file manager in recovery).Put it on your external card, flash, reboot back into recovery. Mount your internal and external cards from mounts and storage menu. Go to file manager and copy/paste away.

Stuck on the Samsung text!

Hi SGP users!
Last night, I installed the Jellybean CM10 ROM (the Nightly one). I also installed the GApps that came with the post. So I booted to Recovery Mode, I tried installing the ROM (Install zip from sd card>Install zip from internal sd card>downloads>the jb rom), but it says "INSTALLATION ABORTED". I repeated to install but to no avail. I rebooted the system to research on this, and the user said that you have to format system and try again. I booted to Recovery Mode again, formatted the system (it says system formatted or something like that), and installed the ROM for the nth time. It still says INSTALLATION ABORTED. Now, I tried installing the GApps zip file, and it worked (I installed the zip file because I want to know if all the files on the internal sd card are broken). So I tried installing the ROM again. Aborted. I rebooted the system, and now it's stuck with the white Samsung text! I don't know why, so I just drained the battery with the Samsung text still ongoing.
Today, I'm pretty sure the battery is drained (there's no text anymore), so I tried charging it. Nada, it's stuck with the loading logo on the battery image.
I think my device is bricked, I don't know. I researched it and all I found was the BootLoop. Is that the error on my SGP? I want to know if my device is bricked, and what caused this. Help?
Its not a brick..reboot to recovery (home + volume up + power ) and install some ics rom for player ..boot to that rom and then go again to recovery and install jb rom. That is offcourse if you have 5.0

Thanks, and one more question: Is it okay if I download the ROM zip from my computer and just transfer it to my player with Download Mode? Because I can't open my player, just to Download and Recovery mode.

transfer the zip files to your SD card; use those files to flash. Also, now, can you get into recovery/download mode? Like after having removed the player from the USB?
just curious- did you originally download the ROM/app package to your device (ie /mnt/sdcard/????) and flash, or did you place the files in the SD card (ie /mnt/sdcard/external_sd [or something like that]) before flashing?
===
Edit: Ok, so literacy kicked in and I carefully read your OP. My guess, and I could be wrong, though I doubt it, is that the installation aborted because you flashed the packages from your internal SD and NOT your external SD (ie the actual SD card). Since the ROM rearranges directory tree (or whatever), it would stand to reason that the installation aborted during the installation process since it could no longer locate the zip. Ie it is no longer /mnt/sdcard/downloads (or wherever), but rather /storage/sdcard0/downloads. I'm guessing that CWM bypasses this and accesses your SD card directly, rendering installation from your actual SD card immune to these effects.
So, try again (assuming your device can still go into CWM recovery) and flash the packages in the proscribed order, but this time, from the ACTUAL SD card, and NOT internal. I "upgraded" directly from a GB rom, having flashed the zip files from the external SD card, and suffered no problems, so I know it isn't necessary to go through ICS. Good luck!
This is a helpful one! I'm sorry, but one last question, (I'm a newbie sorry!) how do you move the zip files to the external SD Card? And if I do that, and it flashed successfully, do I have to start again if I remove my SD card? Really sorry for the questions, but I really want to know.
Thank you so much! Since my computer didn't recognize my SGP (suckish USB cable lol), I placed my external SD card on my cellphone and plugged the cellphone into the computer to download the zip files (I downloaded them directly to the card). Afterwards I placed my SD in my SGP and flashed--It's working, thank you!!!

All you need to do is use a file manager to move zip to sdcard1. Make sure you follow the steps in op of rom.

Thanks for the tip! I switched to JB ParanoidAndroid already because the Gapps on CM10 Nightly don't appear. Thank you anyway!
