[Q] Unable to root - Vibrant Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello All,
I rooted my Vibrant many times with the One Click Root by TGA Gunman. But this time I could not get root.
I tried Nero V3 with Voodoo. I wanted to go back to Obsidian V3, great battery life. I disabled Voodoo. I flashed back to stock T959UVJFD with Odin, let the phone sit for 10 minutes. I tried rooting it many times and failed. I got this error code:
E:can't open/sdcard/update.zip
(no such file or directory)
Installation aborted
My phone came with stock T959UVJI6, rooted and install Nero V3. I used T9595UVJFD to flash back because Odin won't recognized JI6.
Any suggestion?
Many thanks!
P.S does any know where I get custom ROM, pre-rooted, in tar

Mod - please close thread
I am going to try S15274n Root for Noob

So I'm assuming you're getting that error while trying to Reinstall Packages? If so, then the root was unsuccessful for some reason, push the OCLF app to your /system/app directory and there you can install it using Files or some other file program like AndroZip.
Link to OCLF App:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=784691
The app is outdated but it will still root your device just fine.

Thanks!
HI bobbbb,
I tried OCFL as you suggested. Installed, but cannot run, required Root. I read s15274n post in Q&A , Root for Noob. I placed update zip file, follow instruction. Here is what happen.
I download ROM Manager, able to use it and goes into recovery. I tried to install a ROM, but it stuck on looking for update zip file. Don't have one.
But still cannot install Titanium Backup, no root access.
Very odd.

The EXACT thing happened to me last week. I used ODIN to go back to JFD and then used Kies to go flash JI6. When I tried to flash later on, I started getting that message. After I got ROM manager on my phone I tried flashing CE recovery and it said it flashed, but I could never get into CW recovery to flash a new ROM or root. I tried a bunch of things like moving update.zip to my other drive, renaming files, etc.....It all went away when I went to settings/manage applications, then moved ROM manager to the internal card. Apparently it got transferred somehow through screwing around earlier with the phone. Don't know if that helps, but I couldn't find anyone who had the same issue, just got lucky...good luck.

[Q] Unable to root update.zip in recovery mode.

I rooted many times before and this is the first time i ran into this problem.
In recovery mode it says E:Can't open /sdcard/update.zip (no such file or directory). I even tried the one click root/unroot program to no avail.
I think the problem started when i was on Bionix 1.4w/Jacs OC/UV/Voodoo kernel and JI5 modem. I decided i want to upgrade to JI6 from bionix 1.5. I did the disable-lagfix in the voodoo folder, restarted my phone and check with terminal and typed mount to see if it was disabled which it was.
Now here is what started giving me problems. After the voodoo was disabled i notice a whole bunch of my apps including the market, clockwork recovery, titanium back up, setcpu and all rooted programs was missing. So before i decided to upgrade to bionix 1.5. I removed the disable-lagfix and rebooted my phone. When the phone was rebooted the missing apps are still missing.
Next thing i decided to do was restore my phone back to stock rom following the steps in the bionix 1.5 thread, which requires flashing it w/ eugene froyo rom then flashing it again w/ stock vibrant 2.1 rom.
Now since im on the stock 2.1 rom i havent been able to root my phone either doing it the manual way or using one click root/unroot program. PLEASE HELP me find a solution
that happened to me once, I just went through the option to flash a zip file and browsed for the file and it worked instead of doing the update.zip option
Yeah, I dont have that option to flash because I cant get rooted.
I figured it out. Close thread please.

[Q] "Not rooted", yet I'm running a rom.

I downloaded and installed this rom a few weeks ago: Vibrant AOSPish JK2 v1.1
(link: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=832532 )
I had a HARD time getting into recovery, so I decided to use Rom Manager. Once there, I realized I need to reflash a recovery image (who knows why I got the stock recovery screen).
I rebooted, then RomManager states that I'm not rooted, and that "superuser was not found at system bin su"
I'm CLEARLY using something other than the stock rom, so I don't see how I'm not rooted.
Any ideas?
cant you just re-root it again? i mean it takes one click and a couple of mins..
You probably just managed to unroot yourself sometime after installing the ROM, if you use RyanZA's OCLF unrooting is too easy.... I've done so in class.
Anyways, use the OCLF to re-root and ROM Manager to install clockwork, and flash away!

[Q] Rooting Help

Stupidly someone had my phone and went onto oclf and unrooted my device and now I am not sure how to re root the device. I tried to adb reboot but it goes straight to clockwork and when I try to clockwork-update zip nothing happens. It was rom'd to Eugene Ginger Clone R2 Froyo Edition. Please help? thanks

This is what i use every time I need to root.
Usually its after I have odined back to stock. I dont know if it will work if your on a froyo rom.
I've tried used that actually. but I haven't been able to do anything it just goes to clockwork reboot not stock so I can't reinstall packages.
Did you actually check to see if you lost root?
If you did just backup your apps, odin to jfd and root with the update.zip file.

[Q] Options in the reboot menu

I have rooted my Vibrant using ROM Manager/Flash CWM Recovery. (I'm running 2.2, Kernel 2.6.32.9, Build FROYO.UVKA6.) I used this method because no matter what folder on the external or internal sd card I could not use the 'reinstall packages' option on the reboot screen. Now, I'm trying to place the Bionx or Nero ROMs on my phone, but can't get anything to install no matter what I do.
I don't think I anything wrong with the root because I kept getting the same 'E:signature verification failed Installation aborted' message everyone else seems to be getting. I'm wondering if Samsung/T-Mo didn't put anything in to prevent rooting and adding new ROMs.
I have rebooted my phone multiple times and have not gotten any results. Along with ROM Manager, I have Busybox installed.
Please feel free to ask questions for more details. I'm a noob to rooting, so I definitely allow for the fact that I might have screwed something up and will need to start over.

This is because you are now on 2.2. Samsung patched the exploit from 2.1 that allowed cwm recovery to be flashed. The best thing I can tell you to do since you have root would be to either
A) ODIN down to 2.1 ROM then root again, then install rom manager and from there you can install cwm recovery OR
B) Use this method I posted based on Supercurios voodoo kernels found here:
http://forums.t-mobile.com/t5/Samsung-Vibrant/on-steps-to-flash-Bionix-V-1-2/m-p/720803#M5807 (look for the answer marked solution - and because you have root skip ONLY that part and download the proper supercurio's zip not the tar).
Supercurio's vibrant kernels found here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=870480
Do this before you try anything else, this is your quickest and least painful solution:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=833423
Then:
When you boot into recovery and hit Reinstall Packages, the phone might reboot back into recovery, Reinstall Packages again and it will take you to the mod recovery, no more sig. verification.
Congrats!
Thanks.....
roumenjr and mavsfan.
I was able to get the root done. I took roumenjr's suggestion and it worked once I figured out that I was placing the ROMs in the wrong folder.
Now running Bionix Obsidian v2.
oooops..............

Help with samsun infuse 4g

I have a rooted samsung infuse 4g. I tried to follow the 3e video to get to clockwork mod recovery. When at the step to flash rom manager and reboot phone it reboots into recovery and bypasses the "check" and when i click "reinstall packages" i get the e: error about file no valid. I have tried to follow everything and do everything over again and still the same error. I don't know what I am supposed to do. I am so stuck with a rooted phone and no way to backup or put roms on without CWM.
It has been a day, I have viewed every possible thread on this topic I could find. I have no root problem, and no loading problems, only when I try to reinstall packages do I run into the e: error. I really dont want to go through odin if i dont need to.
I rooted with superone click, then put the modded 3e file in the system/bin directory, rebooted phone, and tried to reinstall packages but it doesn't work. I would love cwm on my phone so I could backup my stock rom. I have no way to backup currently.
Check out the super thread in the infuse section of the site. Huge how to section.

I got everything working now and have refuse 1.7 on my phone with a backup just incase. I want to know if I can use one of the roms that don't list as froyo? Will it just update me to the next update of 2.3 or does it ruin my phone because i am on 2.2.1?
So I finally got it all working, runny caty 1.5 rom right now. Seems pretty smooth. I can't wait to have ten posts so I can post about the bugs in the dev forum so they can be fixed in the nxt update. 2.3.6 is so smooth.
