I just had a couple of questions about the whole ROMS and how to install them. I have my Vibrant rooted but I'm still not 100% sure how to root. What I looked up online is the following:
1-Use ROM manager to download recover image.
2-Download ROM and save it on the SD.
3-Boot into recovery (1st question can I boot into recovery through ROM manager or do I have to do it the manual way?)
4-Select option reinstall packages which take you to the ClockWork Recovery
5-Wipe date from phone (2nd question I've heard about NANDROID back ups but what exactly are they and what do they do? If i make a nandroid back up then wipe will I still be able to restore my phone to its previous condition through this back up?
6-install .zip from SD and Voila you have ROM.
So aside from the two obvious questions I just want to know if I have the correct steps?
The help would be greatly appreciated thank you!

1) Yes Rom Manager will let you boot directly into clockwork recovery.
2) Yes Nandroid will make a complete backup of your phone software and apps installed, so when you restore a backup it will be the same as when you backed it up.
3) Make your nandroid before wiping anything! Other wise your steps are ok.
Awesome!! And I can make the nandroid back up from clock work right? Also can I move the back up to like a usb or do I have to keep it on the phone?

Yes, you use clockwork to make the nandroid bakup. And if you like you can store the backup on your USB drive. Just copy the folder over and you will be all good. You only have to have the backup on the phone if you intend to restore a backup.
Whats great about Clockwork and Nandroid which works well with Clockwork is I have my stock rom all the way to my current. I just keep making backups and I restore if I want to compare. I have the following on my phone.
Stock
Vibrant4
Vibrant5
Vibrant6
Vibrant7
When I get a Rom just the way I like it I make a backup of it so if/when I have to leave it and possibly come back to it I just flash it. Also I would recommend Titanium Backup so you can backup your apps and reload them even if you go back on a rom. Makes reloading settings easier in your apps too.
Ok, so I just made a back up using rom mangers back up rom feature, am I supposed to specifically look for something that says "nandroid"?

You will only see "nandroid" if you boot your phone into clockwork recovery.
And, no, you don't specifically need to look for it.

Maybe I'm missing something, but wouldn't you want to keep your backup somewhere NOT on the phone? Because if you brick your phone, or corrupt it or something, wouldn't you have a tough time restoring with your backup file? I don't really get it.
Well I've done it I tried out Eugenes Vibrant Hybrid ROM and it was nice but I'll just wait for something else later on. my only question is once you install a ROM i would have had to DL all my apps again which is gay...
anyway i used Rom manager to create my back up of my stock build after playing with Eugene's ROM for a bit I restored my back up like a G.

Yeah, I loaded Eugene's ROM and played around with out a bit, then I downloaded rom manager from the market and restored the back up I saved on my sd. It was quick and painless.

2. Copy the entire backup directory to your PC for "just in case" scenarios.
3. Make a backup of your user installed apps using Titanium backup, and copy it over to your PC.
4. Download the ROM (i.e. Eugene's Vibrant9.zip) to your internal SD card.
5. Boot into clockworkrecovery (I use ROM Manager for that)
6. Install ROM.zip from SD card
7. Reboot into normal boot.
8. Verify the basic functionality of the phone, and make sure your satisfaction level goes a notch up.
9. Download Titanium backup from the market and install it.
10. Restore Titanium backup.
11. Crack a beer, enjoy your accomplishments, and DO NOT ask when CM6 comes rolling around

In regards to titanium backup... do you need the DONATE version to restore the apps properly. OR will they restore with all our data, but just not link the market? Thanks in advance!
Any way to get into clockwork recovery without rom manager or if the phone isn't booting up at all? I guess I could always leave an update.zip of clockwork mod on the phone. Is that what everyone else does?

I have a paid version, I don't think you would need the full version to properly restore the backup. I used it once to flash a different ROM, and I didn't have to re-purchase Titanium Backup again, I don't believe so.
Well every one tells me that the paid version of titanium is better because it updates your apps straight from the market or something like that. I just downloaded the paid version so I'll let you know how that works out.

You can also pack the backed up user apps into update.zip and re-install the packages from the recovery, so no need to re-download the Titanium Backup, it should be there once you re-install packages from the recovery after booting into your new ROM.
My girlfriend has a Vibrant which is not hardware locked. I rooted and installed Bionix w/voodoo on Sept 28. I can't tell in her 'about phone' which version of Bionix she's running, but I believe it's 1.3, as the zip file I downloaded has 1_3 in the filename.
The first big problem I have is that nandroid does not work. If I try to restore to her stock backup I made, it gets an error when trying to mount data. Same error if I try to make a backup of the Bionix ROM. What am I doing wrong? Until I have her phone properly hacked I was just going to keep a backup of her phone and let her use that in the meantime, but can't do that now.
I am familiar with Android and clockwork as I've owned a Droid for half a year and flash new ROMs frequently but I've never encountered that error before. I want to install the new Bionix but without being able to make a backup I don't want to. I don't think it will install properly without being able to mount data anyway. Can someone tell me what I'm doing wrong?
You have to remove voodoo in order to use clockwork.

Yeah in the bionix thread it says nandroid doesn't work with voodoo and shows how to disable it.

It takes the data, and moves it to a virtual ext4 that it creates, so when nandroid is trying to backup or restore it is looking for the data folders in the wrong place, so it does not work.
You need to follow the voodoo thread, you need to place the file in the voodoo folder, if you delete the folder it may cause you allot more issues, you must install it the way they say in the thread or you can softbrick the phone. And you cannot flash a new ROM with it installed or you again will mess up the phone. The only thing you can do is create the file, put it in your folder and restart the phone, let it do its thing, once it reboots then nandroid will work again.

How-to Disable the Voodoo Lagfix:
1. Once again, you MUST disable the Voodoo lag fix in order to flash any other rom, kernel, or perform a nandroid backup. If you don't...well....lets just say I warned you.
2. Its simple. Create a folder on the root of your sdcard called 'Voodoo'.
3. Now, open notepad or something similar and save the blank file. Name it 'disable-lagfix'. This file cannot have any file extension, so remove it if it does.
4. Place your blank file into the 'Voodoo' folder you made on your sdcard.
5. In order to disable, simply power down your phone and power it back up.
6. FINISHED! You can now flash anything you'd like!
How-to Confirm Voodoo Lagfix is Disabled:
1. In adb shell or terminal type 'mount'
2. If it is disabled is should read '/dev/block/mmcblk0p2'.
3. If it is not disabled, it will read '/dev/block/mmcblk0p4'.
There is also a flashable .zip file that does this for you, if you care to search around and find it. Otherwise, the above will work fine. Once you disable Voodoo and confirm that it's disabled, you'll be able to backup/restore nandroid backups again.
I hadn't done much with my Vibrant and now I want to take advantage of it! What should I do? I'm a complete novice. I've only rooted and used Odin. Is there a good rom that doesn't wipe because I like to keep my data.
The only thing i've done is ODIN to the JI6 update and rooted my phone.
I would say look through the bible in the dev section, it has good options to read through and do to your phone. But to take full advantage of your phone, i would say flash a good rom ( i recommend axura or anderdroid's aospish jk2 1.1) and flash either a voodoo, or an overclocked kernel, or both! Thats really all the major improvements i can think of right now. You can also read up on how to flash roms (if you dont know already) in the bible. sorry there might be other things, but my minds a blank

Most of the ROMs will wipe your data. This generally means that your apps and associated data will get wiped. As a general rule, other things (like photos or videos or music) tend to stay. But always make a back up, just in case, because the general rule doesn't always apply. You can use something like Titanium Backup to backup and then restore your apps (and associated data).

no, a nandroid doesnt backup your texts. And im not really sure how to backup texts, but if you have an important picture (nudes?!?!?! jkjk) then i guess you can just transfer them to your computer. sorry i cant be more helpful haha
Smsbox is free in market, saves all texts and calls to online logs. You cannot however restore to phone. Handy app though, you'll never misplace a text you want to save.

Im on my way to flash Axura 2.2.5.7 on my rooted vibrant . I titanium backed up all my system data and all apps using ‘back up all apps + system data’ feature of titanium. I, then, downloaded Rom Manager *free version… and flashed clockworkmod recovery…then rebooted into recovery and made a nandroid back.
I have now downloaded ODIN 3 v 1.70 on my computer.
I have been reading various guides (including vibrant wiki and bible) on how to root and flash roms.
Since I did ‘flash clockworkmod recovery’ yesterday..do I need to do it again?
Can any one direct me to a step by step process on flashing the Axura Rom.
I guess it’s the fear of the unknown while flashing for the very first time.

EDIT: I have copied the titanium folder from internal memory to my pc just in case. I also would like to make a back up of rom manager (nandroid backup or whatever it is caleld) onto my computer... How do I do that? I wasn't ablt to locate the folder.

The only other thing you need to do, is put the Axura2257.zip (Or whatever it's name is) on the INTERNAL memory card & flash via clockwork Mod or Rom Manager
sorry..a noob here and it might be a stupid question: Can I also use ODIN to flash the rom? I feel I would be more comfortable working through ODIN.

Im telling you!, its less the hassle and way easier to do it through Clockwork Mod

Just make sure you have two files on your 16g internal memory - Update.zip and the Axura.zip(can be named anything other than Update.zip for obvious reasons) file.
Reboot the phone into recovery. If it's blue then hit reinstall packages until it turns green with more options. This may take two times so don't freak if it's still blue after the first, just do it again.
Once in the green recovery go to install file from SD and select the Axura.zip file. Agree to everything and let it run it's course. Once done hit reboot now and enjoy.

Woah.. Were you on Android 2.1? Don't restore settings if you were.
Voodoo just converts to EXT4 (Which is faster)

You can't to my knowlege... 2.1 & 2.2 are very different, and if you restore the settings & apps then there are going to be allot of problems.. I would just reflash it and manually setup the settings this time, and then backup everything up for the next ROM you choose..
that sucks. I have alot of apps (around 70/80). I had customized settings on them. Its sad not being able to restore those apps and their settings. I can do with system settings.
But overall thanks alot for a great phone experiences. its extremely snappy now and im loving my phone again hehe...
Two things from my experience.
1. You should be able to restore all your apps you backed up in Titanium Backup as it seems to be able to tell what apps won't work with Froyo. You'll see them with a line through them in Titanium. Just restore missing apps with data using the batch feature. Do not restore the one with + all system data.
Then go to Backup/Restore at the top and scroll down to green [SMS/MMS/APN] Dialer Storage and click that and restore it too (this is your text messages). You must restart your phone now for it all to take effect.
2. After you complete #1 - Hit up the market for Voodoo Toggle Reboot app (free). Once it's open you can Enable/Disable Voodoo with it. Click it if it's not green and then hit Reboot Now to activate it. You'll hear Linda talking to you while voodoo installs which may take a bit so don't worry.
Voodoo changes the file system to ext4 which is way faster and very stable. Your phone will fly with it.
You will have to setup new settings for everything else this time, but if you use Launcher Pro you'll be able to backup your desktop settings for next time. Once you get everything the way you like it, backup with Launcher Pro and then with Titanium Backup for next time.
Make sure you don't flash anything else through clockwork with voodoo active unless the Dev says it's ok to do so. An example would be when Axura 2.2.5.8 comes out it'll probably be ok to flash without messing with voodoo (crosses fingers).
To put it simply when I boot up my vibrant, it switches to the galaxy s GT-19000 screen then fully boots into what seems like a completely different phone. My contacts were still there until I factory reset, but none of my apps or anything. I also believe that my calls and messaging do not work. I just recently rooted my phone but where things went bad is when I tried installing voodoo lagfix. I tried adding the link where I got the dl for voodoo lagfix but because I am a new user I can not add links, but i got it from the project voodoo website and it was the second link in their dl section, the one for froyo installable with clockworkmod recovery and rom manager. When I try and go into recovery mode ClockwordMod Recovery v2.5.1.3 - Voodoo lagfix is what comes up and is completely different from what the recovery was before. I just want to get rid of voodoo and get my phone back to how it was before. Im sorry for the terrible description, if there is anything else I need to add just let me know, but please, what can I do to fix my phone? any help would be greatly appreciated.
Can you get into download mode?
If so, ODIN to stock JFD.
you may need to use Vol Up + Power, unlike the normal way which is both volume buttons pressed in.
thank you! I used your guide in your sig, which was very helpful, phone is back to normal, however, all of my apps and what not are gone. I am an idiot and forgot to backup before I made changes, is there any other way that I can get back to the way my phone was before? And after going back to the stock JFD using odin, will I still have voodoo on my phone?
If you used titanium backup, your folder of backups should still be on your internal.
If you did not backup, sorry... hope you have them backed up.

^ Ti Backup needs root, so grab the update.zip from my guide and root (incredibly easy), move it to internal, go to stock recovery, install, reboot, you are rooted.
At this point, before you restore, you need to update to a more recent version of Android. you do NOT want to be stuck on JFD (2.1). I'd suggest a ROM like Trigger... crazy stable, faster and themed (I like it).
THEN you can restore your apps after downloading titanium backup (assuming you have them backed up on your internal already).
also, when I connect to my pc and look at my internal sd, the voodoo folder is still there

Sounds like somebodies got a lot of apps to download againlol. Now you'll remember to get TB and make a backup, heheh, but oh well its a learning experience really! If you have any apps that you paid forl at least gmail will remember that and you will see them as purchased, but unfortunately you'll still have to search for them individually.

^^ the voodoo folder is there b/c you did not format your card *no reason to*
when/if you flash trigger, it will convert you to EXT4 file system (voodoo). This IS okay and not a big deal. Not sure what site you went to, but I have 190% faith in the Trigger ROM and voodoo.. both have very talented people supporting it.
^ Paid apps do not need to be searched for. Look in My Apps, they are all there. He also apparently DID make a backup at some point so lets not go bashing the guy.
I do agree to backup often.
I don't think theyre on my internal anymore, I did a clear cache, factory reset when my phone was initially messed up and I think thats where my problem lies. and as for the rom, what are your thoughts on the TW bionix rom? I initially was trying to root and install this rom

Your call man. I made my suggestion for speed/stability/appearance. Don't delete the voodoo folder, even if you did, it will be there after you flash your rom.

You can do whatever you want with it if ur just gonna ODIN and re-flash. I just thought this was funny my bad. I wouldn't be too concerned with it really. Just leave it alone.
- If in fact you made a backup with TB and moved it to ur PC you could replace that back into the /sdcard/ and when you re-download TB just run the restore batch. BOOM! good to go. If not then oh well.
- The "myapps" will show you all your purchased ROMs so you will not need to research for them, just need to re-download them but any "free" apps will need to be researched and redownloaded.
- My friend has a Nexus S and she says that when she does an initial setup after flashing any ROM the gmail sync automatically downloads all her purchased apps. Thats what I was refering to cuz that would be friggin titz!
- Team Whiskey ROMs are proven and stable Bionix is a great choice to flash.

^ GB restores automatically, while good for some.. I hate it. Takes longer to download/install than restoring AND it doesn't restore the data (boo)
