Hello, I'm learning java in order to be an android developer, but I'm still new to this world.
When I'm trying to reboot into the clockwork recovery from the ROM Manager,
after I'm pressing "reinstall packages",it tells in red:
"
E:Can't open /sdcard/update.zip
(No such file or directory)
Installation aborted.
"
What is that missing "Update" file, and where or how can I get it?
Thanks
Is your phone rooted yet? ROM manager isn't of much use unless your phone is rooted. To root your phone, if you are running 2.1, google search for "one click root vibrant" and click on the first link and follow the instructions and download the program. Good luck.

Yes, my phone is already rotted by the app "superuser permission".
I have the same problem
and I notice when my phone is connected to my computer my phone's internal storage is labeled "G" and the external SD card is labeled "F"
I was thinking the problem had something to do with the labels. When it fails initially, I can hit the home button and it seems to boot into recovery but then, when I tried to do a backup I also got a failure.
I don't have an external SD card...
What is that missing update.zip file?

the update.zip file is either the ROOT file you download and place on the internal card to gain root access through stock recovery.
it happened to me once... i had the update. zip file and deleted it.. i guess it was the root file.. so re downloaded it and put it back on the sd card and reinstalled pkgs and it was good.. try finding the root file and putting it back on your sd card
if you are looking for the cwm recovery update.zip I uploaded it, its in this thread:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=893824
but you should be able to just get it from rom manager, but whatever if it isn't working, you can get the update.zip from above.
that isn't the update.zip to root your phone, thats to get into cwm recovery.
In the rom manager app, tell it to flash cwr. And the tell it to reboot into recovery. Select reinstall packages, may need to choose that twice before it takes.

Here's the situation. I moved touchwiz launcer and odex to the root from system apps bc it kept launching even though I had an alternative home app. Didn't delete so if any probs. could restore. Phone was much better until reboot when I got an acore fc message that kept popping up,ok, restore touchwiz, not there anymore,I have no idea why.So I go to do a clockwork restore of my nandroid image, go to the file with the correct date in recovery,no data. Now I have phone that boots, boots into recovery, lock screen but a black screen on unlock, keys light up, notification shade works, dialer and phone work but that's it. So I mounted the phone to my PC. it recognizes the device, phone asks, mass storage, mount all ok. shows 12gig drive, so I try to push a rom by dragging and dropping but again in clockwork recov. it only shows all the folders present not the zips on the root. Now all this is user error on my part,I know I did something wrong, so you live and learn, but i really need some advice here. Beer for anyone who can talk me through this. I'm not proficient on adb. because I never had to use it so be gentle.
do you know how to restore through odin?
Are you booting into CW recovery? or are you trying to load rom from rom manager?
If you are booting in CW you should not see any files. You should choosing the zip file.

I am booting into the recovery menu, when I choose install packeges it takes me to the green CW recovery menu, I choose install zip from sd and it shows me the folders, but not the packages I want to flash. Am i doing something incorrectly?
That is the correct steps. Which rom are you trying to flash?
When in CW press " install zip from sd card" then "choose zip from sd card" the scroll down the rom and install.
Mr
First, thanks for the help! Let me try again. When I choose install zip from sd,then choose zip I am only seeing the folders, not any of the zips. When I choose the nandroid i made it shows the date of the image made but when i choose it it says no data. I am trying to flash fusion, but Id settle for the stock image which should be in there too which i can see from the drive when mounted on my PC. but not when in CW recovery.
ok man its time to flash from odin, its so simple. need help?
You don't put the update.zip on the sd card, you put it in the root directory of the phones onboard memory (so often mistakenly called the internal sd card).
Do that and try again...made the mistake myself so's I know all about it.

he said he dragged it to the 12gb drive plus would CW see the external sd card?
It'll see it, it just won't be able to install from it.
I'm not sure, but I think it has to do with permissions ?!?
Mr
Thats what I was afraid of. Im dl'ing it now, I think the slowest file host in history. I appreciate the hand hold offer, I may need it lol.
Ok, I have downloaded Odin through the all in one zip. I have watched some vids so I think Im comfortable using it,but I have a couple of questions I couldnt find answers to. Do you need to unzip anything from the all in one or just run Odin through the exe? The drivers are in that pack do i need to do anything further to install them?
Mr
Ok. My phone was acting like Loki, I learned to use Odin, and now I feel like Thor. It feels great to have a sure fire way to recover in all eventualities minus hardware damage. Hopefully my Titanium backup wasn't wiped. If any noobs want a walk-through for reflashing through Odin, shoot me a PM or post on this thread and I'll try to point you in the right direction. Now on to Fusion....
Hey everybody,
I apologize in advance if this post is a duplicate but I have tried searching for a solution and still lost. Here is what I did: I used the Odin to restore stock rom, then re-rooted using the one click method, then downloaded a rom from theunlockr.com, then used rommanger to install it. My rom has gave me no problems but now when I try to reboot into recovery to install something else(Like the 2.3 keyboard or a lagfix) i get this error:
E:Can't open /sdcard/update.zip
(No such file or directory)
Installation aborted
Can someone please help me? Thank you, BTW I have a Samsung Vibrant running axura-froyo-rom
I had the same problem too.
When I put update.zip at the root directory of internal memory... once I restart the phone (not get into the recovery mode), this file is missing / dissapear. So... I always got this message too :
E:Can't open /sdcard/update.zip
(No such file or directory)
Installation aborted
anybody can help us pleaseeeeee
I got my phone to factory settings using odin then i rerooted my phone and flashed the same custom rom back on and it worked. Try reflashing your phone, backup first, might work.

how to use factory setting using odin ? tick the "re-partition" box ?
can you explain to us step by step please ?

Did you guys delete the update.zip after rooting?
If you do not see
sdcard/update.zip using a file manager, download the update.zip from my noob guide, move it to internal memory and then try to flash CWR.
Also, look in the bottom of the noob guide (last few posts) for a solution to a RECENT issue with CWR... I assume whatever Koush did in the last update is causing this problem? BUT, there is a fix posted by another XDA user... just a matte of downloading the file and putting it in the right place.

yeah this, the update.zip is ESSENTIAL for your phone to run the clockwork recovery, it stores all the things needed, and when you click "reinstall packages" your system goes in update.zip and looks for what to boot up and finds CWR and boots that so you see that screen.
Don't delete it if you did.

When you usb into your phone it needs to be in the initial area of your sdcard.
You might have a bad update.zip file. Two things, verify the md5(if possible) from where you got it and check the properties and make sure it's not names update.zip.zip. The later is very common.
Try this method too btw, when I Odin back to stock I always use this one to root again. Follow the 'Automated Method' area.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=786877
you will need these drivers AND set your phone to debugging mode (settings/applications/development check USB debugging).

hey all,
Newbie here trying to flash a ROM, i am running into this same error, i have tried everything here and i have one question (might be a stupid question) but my root sd folder is called SD/, not SDCard/ ...is this a path error?
Please note it file must be in the internal card, not the SD card.
This step drove me nuts.
"2. Copy the update.zip (and the ROM) to the INTERNAL SD (not the external SD Card). sdcard/ " (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=732458)
i ran into the same problem...how do i get from 3e to CWR?
here's what's shown in my vibrant directory: Android, DCIM, external_sd, LOST.DIR
i dont have an internal sd (the card) so it's not shown?
the path i got error on: /mnt/internal_sd/update.zip
1. when i tried to "reinstall packages" i keep getting the error that the update.zip file cant be found. should i create a folder for it or something? i think it's a matter of pathing but i cant find out the right place to put the file...(to get from 3e to CWR)
2. i see people suggesting boot with odin or sth like that...does that solve my problem and how do i do that?

You definitely have an internal sd card. Use Astro file manager or something similar and put update.zip on the root of internal sd card, meaning not in a folder. It should look like sdcard/update.zip. If you are having the 3e mismatch recovery issue read this http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=833423

i go to the link that you linked and ran the script. then i download the update.zip file at the noob guide with a slimbean 4.2.2 rom and addons. this time i would just put it in the root folder (technically not in any folder). when i try to reinstall packages, the screen shows that it is "replacing stock recovery with clock work recovery"... but then it would go back to the 3e.
so...i guess putting the files in the root folder is correct. but someone it still wont let me get tot CWR...

You have to reinstall packages twice for it to work properly. It is normal to not work the first time, just reinstall packages again and you should be good to go. If you keep having issues you should just flash back to stock 2.1 with Odin and go from there.

My Galaxy S2 has been rooted for about 2 months now and has been running on the Lightening ROM no problem, but last night when i tried to install a new ROM through CWM it wouldn't let me. I tried to install Villianrom and Cyanogen mod and both failed. Both ROM s were shown on my SD card as zip files and when i tried to move them they failed to get a signature and now when i boot into CWM neither of the ROM s show anywhere it just says NO FILES FOUND. Luckily i had a titanium backup of my Lightening ROM that i could revert to but i am puzzled as to why these ROM s wont install.
Any help would be appreciated
You are not supposed to extract them. They are supposed to be left as "zip" files.
They are getting left as zip files. All i do is download the RAR file and drag it onto sd card and there is nothing showing on the sd card i done all the necessary wipes and then when i try to select a rom off sd card this is what i get:
Android/ Attachments/ DCIM/ Download/ GOLauncherEX/ Galaxy_S_Unlock/ GoStore/ LOST.DIR/ ScreenCapture/ ShareViaWifi/ Sounds/ TitaniumBackup/ Wallpapers/ WhatsApp/ bluetooth/ burstlyImageCache/ clockworkmod/ data/ external_sd/ media/ openfeint/ samsungapps/ usbstorage/ zedge/ update.zip
But never a ROM to select from!!

I have just this minute flashed it back to stock and i am about to root it again and try to install villianrom. If it doesnt work this time i am just going to leave it stock. Will let you know how it goes.
Thanks again
Hi just to let you know phone is now rooted and has villianrom installed without a glitch. Dont know what the problem was but seems to have fixed itself now.
Thanks
I also had this issue early when I got my sgs2. Here is how I fixed it. I used the "unbrick" method, http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1286432
So flash the package in pda that contains stock kernel and rooted rom or stock rom doesn't matter, then flash the code works kernel that contains cwm again, then you can boot into cwm and flash roms again. Not sure what the root of the issue was, I just know that this fixed my problem. Make sure that if you are flashing via cwm your are installing a .zip and not a .tar or other extension as the .tar are for odin. Let me know if this doesn't fix your problem I'll be happy to help dig a little deeper although I would bet that this will fix it
Edit: looks like you got it working while I was writing this

Hi just a quick question. When i install new firmware should i have to back out and reboot system once install complete or should the phone do it by itself??
Hi! So I've sucessfully rooted my phone using the SuperOneClick or whatever its called...I need help backing up my rom. Already tried to follow these instructions;
G. Flash Custom Recovery:
1) Push recovery-clockwork-5.0.2.6-galaxyace.img to your device using "adb push recovery-clockwork-5.0.2.3-galaxyace.img /tmp/" command
2) Turn off your phone
3) Press POWER+HOME BUTTON
4) Login to your device over "adb shell"
5) Mount /system using "mount /dev/block/stl12 /system" command
6) Flash CWM recovery using "flash_image recoveryonly /tmp/recovery-clockwork-5.0.2.3-galaxyace.img" command
7) Umount /system using "umount /system" command
8) Reboot your device using "reboot recovery" command to test your new CWM recovery
9) Reboot your device
This is great and all...except for the fact that this keeps happening;
C:\Program Files (x86)\Android\android-sdk\platform-tools>adb push recovery-cloc kwork-5.0.2.3-galaxyace.img /tmp/ cannot stat 'recovery-clockwork-5.0.2.3-galaxyace.img'
I've already moved the entire zip and folder into platform-tools. What is it I do now?
Would just like to know before I commence with downloading more apps.
Thank you in advanced,
WarDerp

Thanks. But which Zip? the one found on that website? I have clockwork but it doesn't recognize my phone model. Do I install that .apk included on? Some of these instructions are pretty vague to be honest. There's another version of that tutorial that goes more in depth but its for an older version. I don't really want to flash anything without knowing what I'm doing..
When you say 'you have clockwork', that's a very vague statement. Please elaborate.
The zip file on that website provides a version of clockwork that will 1. provide a backup of your rom and 2. works for SG Ace. Which is what you want right? If not don't read any further and do some more searching around!
So let's go over what the website says. Download the zip file to your computer, paste it to your SD Card (anywhere on your SD Card). When it says 'paste the zip file as it is', it doesn't mean 'paste the .apk included in the zip file', it means 'paste the zip file'...
Disconnect your phone from your computer. Turn your phone off. Reboot into recovery by holding down the middle button and then pressing the power button. That will bring up 'recovery mode'. In recovery mode you will see the option 'apply update from SD Card', select that option with the middle key. It will then show you a list, in which will appear the .zip file you 'pasted into the SD Card'. Go to it and press the middle button. It will then install Clockwork Mod Recovery on your phone.
This should appear as an app, with the Clockwork bowler hat symbol. In there you can then press the 'create backup' and it will automatically reboot into recovery and show you the process of copying all the files into the 'clockwork recovery backup' folder that will have been created on your SD Card.
Is there anything vague about that?

you may not install rom manager because it kills your phonw
you need to use
the cwm .zip file given on dev section
rom manager has bricked and killed a lot phones
if you want to back upp stock rom
first download
cf root
flash it in cwm
then
convert system to ext4
then make backupp
otherwise you cant restore it
or use odin

The samsung Galaxy Ace Gt-S5830D
But I'm not looking to modify it until I back up my ROM
*facepalm* Ohh spacecaker.....
Look OP , you cannot use ROM Manager because it bricks your phone .
You have to flash ClockworkMod Recovery through stock recovery (it's a zip file)
Herpderp Adreno + Tegra.
Ok, how do I do this? And from the beginning please
Step by step
Much thanks thus far!

You mean to tell me...that I'm supposed to flash another ROM before I backup my own?
What nonsense! I just want to do something so simple. And you keep saying not to use ROM Manager...but you recommend Clockwork Manager.
Sigh...

No there is a miscommunication here. ROM MANAGER will brick your phone but CLOCKWORK RECOVERY is fine. They are TWO DIFFERENT THINGS.
CLOCKWORK RECOVERY can be got FROM THE LINK I PROVIDED and installed via the instructions I repeated here.
Edit: For the record the link I provided will install CWM Manager v1.80 AS WELL AS Recovery. This is not the same app as ROM Manager and it simply provides a user interface that takes you directly to Recovery Mode and create backups without having to go into recovery mode manually.

1) Download the Clockworkmod zip
2) Place it in your sdcard , preferably not in any folder
3) Go into recovery mode in your Ace
4) Select "install zip from sdcard"
5) Select your Clockworkmod zip
6) Reboot , then go into recovery again
DONE !
Herpderp Adreno + Tegra.

YES!
The last part of his post is a 'sig'...the hint is in its repetition...
Edit: But if you have Rom Manager for the love of God delete it first, before you do anything else. It will brick your phone!!!!!
I am almost done rooting my HTC One. I am able to boot into recovery and get into TWRP but when i go to install it goes directly to SD (which I don't have). I have looked through all of the folders to find the .zip file that I need to install SU but it is not there. I have downloaded it directly to the phone as well as added it from "file transfer." File transfer that there are 3 zip files on the phones internal memory but nothing shows up in Team Win. Help?
Also when I reboot from Team Win, I get a message that tells me I am not rooted, and asks if I want to install SU.....I am afraid ill brick the phone if I swipe to install with no zip selected.
figured it out

I had installed the wrong package for TWRP. Got it changed over and it works fine now!
