I'm just setting up my XDAII (actually a Dopod 696 which I re-ROMed to the latest O2 ROMs). Everything seems to be working fine. However, there is something odd about the "Storage Card" situation.
Even with the SD/MMC slot empty, my Settings/System/Memory/Storage Card applet reports that I have "Total storage card memory" of 14.57 MB. Where is this coming from?
Also, perhaps more worryingly, when I inserted an old SD card (reformatted 32MB one from my Treo 600), the system doesn't seem to "see" it anywhere.
Do any of you gurus out there know why this might be the case?
Thanks very much in advance for any information.
CM
By the way, when I try using Storage Mechanic, it "sees" the "ghost" Storage card, which it is not able to format, but doesn't "see" the real SD card that is inserted into the SD/MMC slot.
Wierd.
Anyone have any ideas?
CM
It's the spare 'flash' memory. When you put a MMC/SD card in you get an addition item in the dropdown list.
Duh. Thanks for the info. However, any ideas why it's not "seeing" my SD card? Do I need to format it in some special way?
AFAIK the card should be formatted as FAT. Don't know if you need to do it or even if it can be done on the PPC. I generally format mine on a laptop before I start.
Hmm. I've been doing the same. Format is FAT (no choice given really), and the notebook sees the SD without any problems. But the XDAII just doesn't seem to recognize it whenever I insert it.
Sigh. I hope it's just a problem with my SD card and not the slot...
CM
If anyone else has any ideas as to why my XDAII doesn't see my SD, do let me know. Thanks again.
What type of SD card is it?
If anyone else is using the same card on their XDAII without a preblem then you can put it down to your SD slot
Ah! .... You did say it was an 'old' 32MB one didn't you? Wonder if the XDAII only accepts SD cards with a certain speed (e.g. 2x, 10x, etc).
My 16MB [Don't laugh ] Toshiba SD card works fine in my XDA II. I haven't tried my 128MB Sandisk one yet.
I would certainly try borrowing a new SD card (any tech-savy friends?) to see if it is "visible" to the XDA II before concluding that the slot is bad. Also, a soft-reset with the card inserted might also help the device recognize it.
Or try the SD card in another XDA / Phone / Digi Cam / PC whatever.
Thanks to all for the comments. The old SD card works fine in my laptop and my Palm. Sigh. I'm going to go look for a new SD card tomorrow and just pray that it's some wierd quirk between this particular SD card and the XDA. I really hope it's not a problem with the SD slot on the XDA (actually a Dopod 696) as it's a nightmare to get things fixed/exchanged here in China.

Had a similar problem a month or two back with a work mates XDA1. He bought an 128MB SD Card (some odd make) which worked fine on his PC but his XDA didn't see it! My Sandisk SD card worked in his XDA fine tho!
is there a maximum size for sd cards in xda's... im having problems with my 4gb sd... is this a common problem?
Its the speed that is the key.
Hi, I had similar probs with Magician and 1gb,2gb, 4gb cards.
Seems that certain devices can't handle SD cards with speeds more than 60X. Most high end cards are 150X.
Finally I got this Kingmax 4gb SD40X card from Dabs.com under £50 and it works in my Magician ,Universal and Himalaya. Hope this helps
PS; If you can try your card in another device at least you can check if the card is faulty.I had one faulty card .I also had a faulty device which had backlight probs and had to go back under warranty for repair !!!!

Official answer from Qtek
After i had problems with TomTom:
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Had the same error {map not found} thought it was TomTom error so i bought Destinator (excellent software) but the problem was identical.
So bought a new storage card Contacted Qtek about it:
"Thank you for your E-mail. Regarding your query, please note that the SD card standard is limited to 2 GB and our devices are fully compliant to the standard. Cards with the capacity greater than 2 GB are not compliant to the standard and we cannot guarantee that they will function correctly. As to transferring speed, we recommend not using ultra speed SD cards with the speed more than 64x as they either will not work or may pose problems later. Also we would like to inform you that some SD cards need to be formatted using any PC / Laptop (supporting SD cards) before using with our devices.".
So put in a 45x speed 2GB SD card and still the same problems.
Contacted Microsoft and they gave me a hint:

How about XDA II? I heard it is only support 512Mb
Can anyone tried SD card bigger than 512Mb?
i think it depends on the OS
Hi guys
don't quote me on this but i think the supported size by enlarge depends on the version of ppc/wm you are running...form what i read people with wm5 on their himalayas were happily running 4 gig cards (i think someone may have evn been using an 8gig) but 2003 i think only really likes up to 2 gig.
if someone can confirm this it would be appreciated as i'm looking to get a new card for mine...i'm stuck down in 2k3 so i have full backpack functionality but i'm hoping i can get a 4gig working in there
if anyone is using the 2k3 and has a 4gig working all fine and dandy please let me know which rom ver you are using and which card you are using so i at least have some idea what is possible.

Hi, Flakey software from TomTom. I have XDA IIs with 1GB and 4GB SD cards. TomTom v6, Western Europe maps, two voices, GB postcodes and satellite images sneaks into 1GB card.
TomTom wouldn't install to 4GB card, using 1GB SD card and TomTom Home software product I performed a backup. Then restored backup to 4GB card. Yes TomTom and maps work with the 4GB SD card.
However, when attempting TomTom Home back up from 4GB card software message says "No data to backup". Thats what I call flakey software and where are software updates for v6.01?

TomTom Navigator 6 - TomTom - Home software product doesn't like the 4GB SD memory card very much. Then again TomTom navigator 6 doesn't like the 2GB SD micro memory card either oh what fun
2GB cards DO WORK with Xda IIs and XDA II mini
The issue posted on the Microsoft Site isn't really related to the size of the SD card inserted - here's the updated URL by the way: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/277742
I've found that my XDAIIs does support a 2GB card - the main problem that I had was formatting it. The trick is that the card has to be formatted as 2GB (or max capacity) BEFORE inserted into the device, otherwise problems will occur. When I formtted the 2GB SD card in my device, it indicated that the card was a 2GB card, but 1GB of the sectors on the SD card were marked as bad (just run a DOS chkdsk command on the card following such an operation on the PC). To format the card properly, you'll need a SD card reader/writer that copes with cards > 1GB. I've also got a SD card reader in my Fujitsu latop (built in), but it only supports up to 1GB. Most of the latest USB multi-format card readers should work with the large capacity. So, to get it to work:
1) Ensure that you have a SD card reader on the PC that supports >1GB capacity
2) Format the card on the PC in the reader/writer
3) Validate that the format was successful by running the DOS chkdsk command on the SD Card - ensure there are no bad sectors
4) Then insert the SD Card in your PPC
I know for a FACT that a 2GB card works in both an XDA IIs card, and an Xda II mini device, as I've had both working.

To the forum,
Lately I've been having an intermittent problem where Windows Media Player Mobile doesn't "see" the storage card anymore [where the songs are stored]. All other apps on the card run fine. Pocket Mechanic Pro v2.50.199 shows no problem with card. A friend stuck in his storage card & media Player "saw" the card??? I reformatted the SD card using Pocket Mechanic Pro and checked that Media Player could see the card. I have a /My Documents folder on Sd card.
Three weeks later, the same problem is occuring, Media Player can't see the storage card. If I remove the SD Card and reinsert it, a media player dialog box comes saying a SD card was inserted, do you want to search the card for music and video. I say yes and it finds the 45 songs but hangs in trying to build a library of them. It finally returns with no songs and unable to see the SD card.
The SD Card is a 1GB SanDisk micro SD card about 8 months old.
Any thoughts out there?

Another question for the group: Pocket Mechnic Pro (PMP) has the ability to set the FAT and Cluster size when formatting the storage card. Could it be I have the wrong FAT-cluster combination? PMP supports formating a fat of FAT12, FAT16 & FAT32 and cluster sizes from 1 sector, 512B up to 128 sectors, 64K.
Any recommendation on FAT/Cluster combination to use for my SanDisk 1GB micro SD Card?
Thanks Craig
hi all
i haven't use my xda2 for long time, and recent wm6 bring my interest back on.
The stoneage sd card i'm using is 256m, and all in suddent i found a tool which says support the SDHC with XDAII. and can someone have SDHC plz try this tool on the device. The tool is harmless I swear, and only designed for the SDHC, NORMAL SD CARD WILL DISPPEAR from the device after installation as I tried on my 256 card, after uninstallation and it works again.
Please post reply if it works(with your device) and i'm gonna grab a SDHC for my XDAII. Thank you very much in advance!
Please always run virus check after download for your own safety.
Hey Everyone,
I'm having a slight problem with my new SD card. I just bought a new 16 GB SanDisk Class 2 High Capacity Micro-SD card. Unfortunately though, my Xperia X10a is not recognizing the card. When I insert the card into my phone, the phone acts like there is no SD card installed at all. It's been properly formatted to FAT32 and my laptop recognizes it fine. My phone recognizes my old SD card, a 4 GB PNY Class 4 High Capacity Micro-SD card just fine, but refuses to recognize the new SD card. Does anyone have any ideas on how to fix this problem?
Thanks!
Format it on the phone....not on the computer.
Settings->SD Card....Unmount if it is mounted....and Format from that menu.
It needs to partition the drive itself properly.
I wish I could do that. But the phone doesnt even recognize that there is an SD card in the phone. It says that the SD card is missing even when I put the new SD card in.
Or if you have everything backed up....start from scratch.
Download and install SEUS from Sony. And reflash from scratch using SEUS.
If you had any app2SDcard app or any apps loaded on your old sdcard, they could be preventing any new SDCard from being added.
Thanks for replying.
I've tried going back to stock but it still seems to be not working. Stock firmware still fails to recognize that an SD card has been inserted.
Is the card any thinner than the old one? If so, add a piece of tape or piece of paper to the back of it, so it fits in the phone snuggly.
When you do a full repair using SEUS and install with the SDCard in the phone, it should auto format the card during the the reinstallation of stock 2.1
Did you actually reinstall using SEUS with the SDCard inside?
Otherwise trade in your new card for another card (make and model should be fine) this time....do not stick the card in your computer. First place it needs to go is in the phone.
Actually...an old post I read on another forum, one guy was successful after he stuck the SDCard in his camera, and formatted the card from the camera...and he was unsuccessfull when he originally formatted the card in his computer.
Thanks so much for helping. Somehow, I managed to get it working. Turns out that the cluster size of my SD card was set to auto, which caused it to have cluster sizes that the phone couldnt read. After reformatting it to 4 kb clusters and FAT32, it was recognized by the phone. Thank you so much!
So I purchased this Micro SDHC card when I was overseas thinking its a decent deal.
It was a Verbatim 16gb Class 10 (Verbatim 44010)
Long Story Short:
I had to format the card to exfat in order for my phone to write to it.
Using fat32, the phone can read the card just fine but can't write to it.
If I tried to format the card with the phone, I get the same problem (I guess the phone formats it to fat32?)
The card reads/writes fine in both formats when plugged into the pc
What do you guys think? Something is wrong with the card?
A its a question .
Probable faulty card .

I9300 and 8GB SanDisk Class 10 SDHC
This is the version that is branded as ideal for Android that came with a Sandisk application for you to download. The card has been working fine for 1 month and then suddenly while my computer can read/write to it just fine....the S3 can only read the contents from it but can't write to it. It is originally formatted to FAT32, now my phone can't copy files to it (whatever file types) using the stock file app and the camera won't even save photos to it with an error that says "copy failed" or "can't save to storage".....Having seen this post being the closest to what I am experiencing, I am wondering if I should try exFAT too.....
Hello,
So my sd card (16gb) appears to have stop working and the phone gives me the message “SD Card is blank or has unsupported filesystem.” This started yesterday after I changed default storage for my camera to sd card. Before that it was working just fine.
I restarted the phone, no luck with that. Turn off phone and remove and cleaned sd card, still no luck. I plugged in my phone to the computer to access the sd card, but did not show up, I guess its cause the card is not mounted? So then I thought I’ll just plug in the sd card to my computer and back up everything and then format to correct, but no that didn’t work… when I plugged it in my computer, my computer did not even recognize my card.
At first I thought maybe my adapter is broken, so I plugged in a spare sd card (1gb) I had lying around and that on worked just fine. So I googled what could be wrong and read that it could be that the adapter does not support HCSD cards. So then I plugged in my sd card into a USB sd card reader (which had a slot for micro sd which I used), but same thing – did not recognize 16gb card, but it did for 1gb card. I checked to see if it’s a driver issue, but it was up to date. Then I doubted the USB card reader didn’t support HCSD like the adapter, so I went out and bought a new USB card reader (one that works with HCSD cards) from bestbuy (Insignia SD/MMC Memory Card Reader). Still did not recognize card with new reader on computer.
I googled to see what my options were, but the solutions that I found all had the computer recognize the card – which mine isn’t doing… but I still tried a few things I read like chkdsk in command prompt, but I got “Cannot open volume for direct access” error.
Even though my computer does not recognize the card, my phone does recognize it but corrupt and offers to format. I also tried it on different phones (Galaxy S2 T989, and Blackberry Bold 9650) to see if it can read it, but same thing it recognizes it but corrupt and unreadable.
I’m still looking around for solutions, but if anyone can help me with this, please do. Please let me know if you need more info.

Sounds like the SD is toast. It's not easy to extract corrupted data from a micro sd card
