[HOWTO] Modify apps to not go fullscreen and hide the notification bar - Nook Color Themes and Apps

this isn't a problem for those who are using a softkey app, but i wanted to see if i could hack the facebook app into not going fullscreen when viewing photos. i don't think it's legal for me to post my modified facebook apk (comments?), so here are some brief instructions for anyone interested. this technique should work for other apps too. please post if you have success with other apps.
1) use apktool to unpack your existing facebook apk
2) edit AndroidManifest.xml and change this line
Code:
<activity android:theme="@style/Theme.FacebookDark" android:name=".ViewPhotoActivity" />
to this
Code:
<activity android:theme="@android:style/Theme.Panel" android:name=".ViewPhotoActivity" />
3) rebuild the facebook apk with apktool
4) sign the apk using jarsigner and your own key
5) uninstall facebook and install the modified apk
if these instructions aren't detailed enough for you, then sorry but you probably shouldn't be messing around with stuff like this

Hey, thanks for tutorial. That's much better then just posting a link to a download. I'm not a Facebook user but I will try that on other apps.

ok, but note that Theme.Panel might not necessarily be the right theme for every situation. also, you only need to change the theme on activities that are full screen. you can find out the name of an activity by watching DDMS as you use the app. good luck.

Would it be possible to apply this technique to completely disable the notification bar system wide?

No, this is app-specific... Coming from a completely different place.

I was afraid you would say that, thanks anyway! Your guides are a godsend!

The only difference is the smali file that needs to be edited, Statusbarpolicy.smali, is in the systemUI.apk
Decompile that apk and you will find the file in smali/com/android/systemui/statusbar/policy

On a different device these days looking to do the same mod. StatusBarPolicy.smali doesn't appear to exist in SystemUI.apk and I can't find a reference to 'alarm' in any of the smali files that contain StatusBar in the name. Any thoughts on where else to check? (It's still Android 4.0.4)
Edit: Found the relevant code in SystemUI.apk\smail\com\android\systemui\statusbar\phone\PhoneStatusBarPolicy.smali

Wow, the OP removed all the content from the thread and replaced it with "Deprecated", locked the thread, and doesn't allow PMs. Never mind the fact that that information was still entirely relevant to all pre-JB devices...
Seems pretty crummy to just remove all the info. I wonder why he did it.
Sorry to bump this up, but I published an Xposed mod recently to hide the icon (permanently or based upon configurable time to next alarm). Will work on any rooted 4.0.3 or higher ROM.

[Q] Hide App From launcher, and still have the option to start it.

ok, im trying to hide this app, from the app drawer by editing the manifest.xml file, and i did it, to be specific i just remove this line from manifest.xml "<category android:name="android.intent.category.LAUNCHER" />" but i want to hide it, and still have the option to open it...
i tried to start the application using titanium backup, but it doesnt give the option to open app...
im trying to do it by editing manifest.xml. i know there apps to hide anothers app..
if you have any idea of how to, ill appreciate it...
(im not an expert on this, and i dont even know if im asking in the right forum)
Hey, did you come across a solution? I'm facing exactly the same problem right now: The App's gone from the drawer but no longer executable by no means.
Sorry for bumping this old thread, but I endured reading about 10 pages of search results without success.
Thanks in advance!
You can use my app "App Quarantine" to do the job. You can disable the app in question (so it's no longer in the application drawer) and re-enable it as you want. Therefore you could use the home screen widget for quickly launching the app.

Hey, thanks for the suggestion. Unfortunately I'm searching for a solution to get along without any 3rd party app.
Which means, I want the app to be "set invisible" before even installing it on the phone. I'd really like to know, which file of the apk has to be edited in which way to achieve this.
It'd be totally fine if it simply didn''t appear on the drawer.
Any other ideas?
I have an idea.
I have replaced the icons with a completely transparent .png image and recompiled the apk.
Remember you should not change the file name of the original icon, just replace the content.
I have used apk editor pro for this work.
The app will be in the launcher or app drawer but it will remain invisible.
You should also replace the app name with 3 to 5 spacebars.You can remember the position of the app in the app drawer.
Everyone will see you tapped on a empty space and a app started
I have tested this.
So you can be sure.
One more thing
If you see any folder like mipmap_anydpi_xxx in /res you should delete it

[Q] Add-On App - Remove / Hide Launcher Icon WITHOUT Removing Category Launcher?

Hi,
I have an add-on / non-stand-alone app that I do not want an app icon to be created for. It is not meant to be run separately, since it is an add-on, but I would like it to show instructions on how to actually use it if someone does run it upon downloading from Google Play.
I have searched around, and kept finding people instructing others to remove
<category android:name="android.intent.category.LAUNCHER" />
I do not want to do this, as not only does it appear to cause the app to not function correctly, but it also prevents people from still having the option to run which would display instructions for use. I have seen others do this same thing I am seeking to do, and been able to look at their manifests: they look basically identical to mine, containing the launcher category, and I have verified that no launcher icon is present, checking directly after the install.
Thanks for your help.

[Solved] Screenshot Button Help

I have an Apex AP-GS918 (Nobis NB09) tablet with rooted stock Jellybean Rom. There is an annoying screenshot button on the bottom bar next to the volume button that I keep pressing accidentally because it is in a bad spot. I wish to disable it or remove it completely. I have searched the forums but all the answers seem to be for Samsung devices. They say to change the quick launch in the settings which I do not have. And they say to remove or disable the system app that controls it, they have different names for the app like screenshotcapture.apk and such, but there is no system app with that or similar name.
If anyone knows a way to be rid of this annoyance, any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks in advance.

I was unable to find an app to disable, and you were correct that it was part of SystemUI.apk. But I found out how to remove it from the bar. I am unable to post where I found the method because I am not allowed to post outside links yet, So I kind of wrote a tutorial (if you can call it that).
I decompiled my SystemUI.apk using Android Multitool on my PC. I edited \res\layout\system_bar.xml.
The info about the buttons are there. I found the line labeled
Code:
@id/screenshot
and changed the following code after it
Code:
android:layout_width="@dimen/navigation_menu_key_width"
to
Code:
android:layout_width="0.0dip"
which makes the screenshot button 0 pixels wide, meaning not there anymore.
Then I recompiled it, opened the new apk using 7zip and copied the edited xml from it to the original apk to prevent signature failure (after making another backup of it of course), used ADB to push it, permission it, and reboot it. After that I was free of that %$#@ button. I now have to use a third party screenshot app from the play store, but it doesn't have a constant button that leaves me with 50 accidental screenshots a day.
It also works to remove the volume buttons, which are pointless when you have the hardware buttons. Those lines are labeled
Code:
@id/sub
@id/add
(on my device anyway). It does NOT work for the 3 dot menu button, but that one isn't so bad to have there.
Take that you cheap Chinese tablet.

Theming LGG3 Apps - Pure Black Settings - for MM stock

I have been theming apps on my phone to give them black backgrounds. The white backgrounds bother my eyes. I'm doing pretty well but I am having a big problem with the LGSettings.apk. I have decompiled the apk and edited the colors.xml, styles.xml and parts of the manifest that i thought might change the theme. I then recompile and run the settings app but I never see any changes. I am trying to figure out what I need to edit to achieve white text on a black background. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
I don't have the apks in front of me, but you may need to theme more than that one. I think you'll need:
LGSettings (which you currently themed)
Possibly: LGSettingsAccessibility/LGSettingsProvider
These two may or may not have anything to theme in them, so you may need to decompile to take a look.
Ok. I'm getting there. The background item and textcolor item were lurking in the lge-res.apk. I am still having trouble finding a way to change the blue action bar color (1) and the color of the white section headers (2). Anybody know what these might be called and what apk I need to look in? Thanks a lot!

Ok. I found the action bar - I used 'Widget.Material.ActionBar.Solid' to hard code the background color. Now I just need somebody to help me find those white section headers. Anybody? Thanks so much!
Well after two hours of poking around the apks I finally figured it out. Pretty easy to make all the changes in lge-res.apk. pm me if interested in doing this kind of theming

Hi. Please in the future don't use all capital letters. I know you didn't mean this in this case, but it's generally considered "shouting", and for longer strings it makes it harder to read. Thanks for understanding.

sorry man, i'm understand!
I definitely intend to share my findings. However right now i am redoing the theming trying to push all the edits into LGsettings. Since I did the editing in the lge-res.apk it has a lot of unintended consequences on other parts of the system

Hey there! Good to see you on this thread Minhas729. I'm really sorry for the delay, I have just been slammed on the home front and haven't had time to play around with this stuff.
I'm still not happy with the theming I'm doing but I plan on posting my work in process files in the next 5 or 6 days.
In the meantime, let me share my knowledge (it isn't much!)
I think I am going to change the thread title to Theming for Dummies (Like Me) (anybody know how to change a thread title?). so step one will be in the next post.....
OVERVIEW
(Ok - so here is a quick overview of the theming process as I do it. Again, I am just a novice and I just stumble around so if I get the terms incorrect forgive me.
1) The first step in theming an apk is to decompile the apk. Unzipping the apk is not going to work. This is because there are special files like styles.xml and colors.xml that are hidden in a 'values' folder in the res directory. As far as I know, you cannot access these special files by simply unzipping the apk.
2) To decompile you need an apk tool - I use 'Tickle My Android' (I'm going to call it TMA going forward) - it has a great developer with excellent instructions. The way decompiling works is you first have to create a mini-work area on your computer. You do this by decompiling and installing the framework-res and lge-res apks from your phone to your computer. TMA needs these files to decompile other apps because most apps reference a bunch of things in the framework-res and lge-res files Installing TMA is pretty easy and the instructions on the thread are excellent. The only issue I had was finding a good version of apktool.jar to use in conjunction with TMA - one that worked well with marshmallow apks. The apktool is the actual tool that does all the work - TMA (in my understanding) is simply a very well designed user interface to use the apktool. So you need an apktool that will recognize marshmallow files and be able to decompile them. I use "apktool_2.1.0-a64a03-SNAPSHOT"" as my apktool.jar file.
3) Once an apk is decompiled, all the apk components will be saved in a 'working' folder. You can then go in and edit colors and and styles using an xml editor.
4) Once you have made your edits you use TMA to recompile and sign the apk. Then you move the file back to your phone, place it in the proper device directory, fix permissions, reboot and cross your fingers.
Ok - that is the overview - go off and start trying it. One suggestion - dont try to push files from the phone to the pc with TMA - just use your usb cable.
more to come...

Edit your first post in a web browser. Choose Advanced mode and there'll be a field to edit the title.
Below are links to download the themed lge-res.apk and lgsettings.apk. MAKE A BACKUP FIRST (I'm not responsible for anything that goes wrong if you try these files). Once downloaded you will need to use a root browser to copy the files to the appropriate system directory and to change the permissions. Keep in mind, this is a work in process, if you enter settings and click on the bluetooth or wifi sections you will notice that the background is not themed yet. I'll repost when these are fixed.
lge-res.apk download link
LGSettings.apk download link
Keep in mind that you have to install both files if you want the full black background.
Ok. I think I worked out most of the bugs. The files are now set up in a flashable zip. Test it out and let me know if you see any issues. If it is working well I will start a new thread in the Themes section and work on the systemui as well. Thanks. Download link below:
