1. place the .apk in C:/AndroidSDK/tools on your PC
2. connect phone to to PC via USB, do not mount, make sure debugging is on.
3. type these commands in command prompt in order:
cd\
cd AndroidSDK\tools\
adb devices
adb push nameof.apk /system/app
.......and youre done
keep in mind, when typing the the name of the apk in the command, it IS case sensitive.
also, im sure its the correct version, but even if its not, it wont mess anything up. just uninstall if it isnt.
Also, if you have root explorer, you can just copy and paste the apk to /system/app
good luck

Thank you so much! i really appreciated it TopShelf. iused the root explorer method as i couldnt get the sdktools going for some reason. took me some time to figure out i had to mount to r/w too bu ti got it. thanksagain!

glad to help.....make sure you memorize both methods though, because both come in handy when messing around with system apps

Is it possible / OK to uninstall default apps?

Hi folks,
I have installed the Steel web browser and like it much more that the one supplied by HTC with the phone... is it possible to uninstall it and just leave Steel?
The above is just an example, my HTC hero has lots of stuff I don't really plan to use, ever. Is there a way to get rid of them FOR GOOD?
Thanks in advance!

I'm so with you on this one...I've added Twidroid and turned off Peep but would love to completely delete it in order to avoid any conflicts. Also the default messaging program is a bit of a dog when compared to Handcent SMS.
There used to be a way on the WinMo 6 phones to change the registry values to allow deletion of TouchFlo UI programs but I've not been able to find anything online yet. Maybe it's too early in the phone's life for anyone to have cracked this.
At the moment, the only thing I can do is to make sure that notifications from default programs that I have replaced with better ones are turned off so that they only come from the new software.
I realise this doesn't help you (or me) very much but I'd pay good money to have an add/remove program that works on the default apps (ASTRO, Appmanager and OI File Manager do not seem to be able to access the default programs for uninstallation).
Does anyone with modding experience (obviously I don't ;D) have any suggestions on how to achieve this?

i have installed QuickUninstall app and it offers all the built in apps as well as the added ones....didn't try to delete any though, they don't bother me that much to toy with it just yet
Kewl...thnx for the heads up. QuickUninstall is downloaded. I'll try to get rid of Peep and the inbuilt message program and if something goes wrong I'll be back here begging for more help

I've had some success with Root Explorer - I've successfully removed the stocks app and the stocks widget.
Big pointer before you start on removing default or stock Rom apps is to MAKE A NANDROID BACKUP!! You can do this by booting the temporary Recovery image from the rooting thread here
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=543571
That way, if you do mess up, you can restore the Nandroid Backup.
Just ask Auntie Dayzee (BTW I wish I was this sensible with other stuff in my life!! LOL)
I need to partition my hard drive and install Windows in order to use Nandroid and root the phone (you need to root it in order to use root explorer right?).
As soon as I find a way for the installer to find my hard drive I'll poke you for advice, thanks dayzee
Does anyone know what's the name of the web'n'walk app? Can't find it in the app folder.
It's not an app afaik, it's just a shortcut.
all it does is open the default browser to the t-mob web and walk homepage.
Oh.. do you also happen to know where I can remove it?
Nevermind, found it in the app folder as "urlshortcut.apk"

As far as i understand, ADB works in Mac and Linux as well, you just need to prefix the commands with ./
or have i missed something?? there's no point installing windows if you don;t have to....
how did you do it?

Hi Dayzee,
noob here. i just rooted my htc hero and i have root explorer running.
can you explain how you removed those apps?
I want to ditch peep, footprints and possibly pc synchronization (if this is safe).
I am a little lost in this file directory structure...
...or could you point me to a really great link on this topic?
thanks so much,
sprinkles
had success using Paul's method on Modaco...all credit to him in my case.
http://android.modaco.com/content/htc-hero-hero-modaco-com/291521/if-you-want-to-remove-htc-sync/
Used a file explorer (astro in my case) to view the folder /system/app so that i could see what needed to be removed, but am now happily without Peep, Learn More, Stocks,HTC Sync, Mail etc.
adb remount
adb shell rm /system/app/xxxxxx
replace xxxxxx with the app you want to remove
HTC Sync - PCSCII*
HTC Stocks and Widget - *Stock*
Peep - *Twit*
Learn More - Learn*
Footprints - *Foot*
Mail - HtcMail*
there's plenty of others in there as well if you have a look. Just be sure to be careful what you delete, and remember that the app names are case sensitive.
The rooted 2.73 rom from Modaco works fine with this command, and i expect the Modaco custom roms will as well.
I used a similar method to get rid of some HTC app which kept bugging me since I upgraded to the new ROM (Peep, Stock, etc), works perfectly and no problem so far.
It's pretty straightforward, even for a newb like me, but if anyone is interested in the steps I followed :
0- Before doing anything that can mess up your phone, it's recommended to do a nandroid backup.
I'll explain how to backup each removed app individually, but we're never cautious enough !
1- Load the recovery image and mount the system:
Code:
fastboot boot cm-hero-recovery.img
adb shell mount /system
2- Get the list of app installed, spot the files you want to delete
Code:
adb shell ls /system/app/
3.a - First alternative : Backup on SDcard and delete
Mount sdcard.
Create a folder saveHtcApp.
Move (copy + delete in one go ! ) files from system/app to saveHtcApp
Code:
adb shell mount /sdcard
adb shell mkdir /sdcard/saveHtcApp
adb mv /system/app/Stock.apk /sdcard/saveHtcApp
adb mv /system/app/Stock.odex /sdcard/saveHtcApp
adb mv /system/app/com.htc.StockWidget.apk /sdcard/saveHtcApp
adb mv /system/app/com.htc.StockWidget.odex /sdcard/saveHtcApp
Then check that all worked right by doing some ls (Yeah, I'm found of double-checking)
Code:
adb shell ls /sdcard/saveHtcApp
adb shell ls /system/app/
3.b - Second Alternative : (don't do it after 3.a !) Backup on Computer and delete.
(on Windows, I assume Linux's folks won't need explanations to do the same on linux.)
Create a folder saveHtcApp : in the following example, in the working directory.
(Of course, you can make it anywhere, but it make the path smaller to work on working directory... and move the save folder afterwards)
Then pull (copy) the files from the phone to the computer.
Just to make sure, a little dir to see that all files were actually copied on the computer.
Code:
mkdir saveHtcApp
adb pull /system/app/Stock.apk ./saveHtcApp
adb pull /system/app/Stock.odex ./saveHtcApp
adb pull /system/app/com.htc.StockWidget.apk ./saveHtcApp
adb pull /system/app/com.htc.StockWidget.odex ./saveHtcApp
dir
Then, delete them :
Code:
adb shell rm /system/app/Stock.odex
adb shell rm /system/app/Stock.apk
adb shell rm /system/app/com.htc.StockWidget.odex
adb shell rm /system/app/com.htc.StockWidget.apk
4 - Reboot the device !
Hope that could help someone.
Tested on Brown French Hero, 2.73.405.5 ROM offi.
Brill stuff - I'm rubbish at the coding stuff - where does this back the apps up to? and what does the dot do? and if its pulling to the PC, does the slash have to go the other way?
Dayzee
Good question, I should have explain that a little
I'll update my previous post.
For the slash-thing... I'm always switching from windows to linux to windows, so I'm always confused between which slash use.
When I have issue with /, I try with \.
BTW, in the present case, I run all those lines on Windows 7 without any issue.
Edit : post step-by-step edited. Is it clearer ?
If anyone see anything to change or explain, just say so.

I backuped them too, just in case...
For the suggestion, the list to remove is pretty simple : anything you don't use at all.
As long as you keep the backups, there shouldn't be any problem to put them back if there is any issue.
Of course, any app used by other apps must stay on the phone.
I removed :
Stock
Peep
Footprints
Tutorial
HTC Sync
rhedgehog says he removed HtcMail too.

technically, if you wipe the device and start over all these apps are reinstalled from the get go.
this list is great. i am going to do some more cleaning and move onto the next task of partitioning my storage.
dayzee did a wonderful job for that newb root posting...i wish there was locked how to list that was easy enough for anyone to:
-1- root the htc hero (completed)
-2- remove and replace htc's crapware apps (maybe this thread is part 2)
-3- partition storage (not seeing an easy way yet but downloaded apps2sd)
-4- recommended replacement apps and next steps
i'd be glad to help put this together, make it easy to read, make it pretty, etc.

I agree - I've added Tweedeldee's method to the Hero Wiki which is here
http://wiki.xda-developers.com/index.php?pagename=HTC_Hero
and has some other guides - Sprinkles, there is also a Dayzee Walkthrough for installing MoDaCo Roms, including some tips on Aps2SD partitioning methods.

UTILITY: SuperNooter 0.1 - Root your NC + Superuser

In addition to enabling ADB, SuperNooter will also mount the NC /system partition and copy over Superuser.apk and the su binary. This means you do not need z4root! You should see Superuser in your Extras/App Drawer after booting from the SD card.
Tested with WinImage under Windows and dd under Ubuntu.

Thanks for making things even easier!

Do we just write this to the sdcard like nooter? Install it like nooter? Do we need to wipe anything if we are previously rooted with nooter? Any adb commands needed?
A little more info and/or a tutorial would be really helpful

Yup...do exactly what you did with nooker only use this image. Same steps.
Ok but do we need to wipe anything if we already used nooter? I don't want to brick my NC. Who is going to be the first to try it out? I would but I don't know anything about programing so if I messed it up I would be screwed
You can use supernooter on top of an existing nooter to gain Superuser. I would not try it if you already have Superuser (why would anyone?).
Mistar Muffin...you are the man!!!!
Just picked up a NC today and have been prepping for the past couple days...and pleasantly surprised that the steps have diminished with this.
Thank you!!!
How safe is this? The other utility you created seems to be bricking devices. I'm not saying your a bad guy or anything I just don't want to brick my NC

OK. The other utility Mistar Muffin created does not "brick" devices.
(1) I've yet to see a NC truly bricked. Only people who crap their pants when things don't go perfect.
(2) The script that is having problems is not Mistar Muffin's script. It is one that someone else (rboatright) created for people who run Winblowz and it is only based on Mistar Muffin's script.
Seriously folks... You REALLY need to watch the tone here and at a minimum, get your facts straight.

Setting me straight? LOL I simply asked if it is safe. I didn't need setting straight all you had to do was say yes its safe and that you didn't write the program people are having problems with. The other thread you started has people in it that are getting "bricked" devices. I didn't know you didn't write the particular program that was causing this. I was not implying you were doing anything wrong I just don't want a "bricked" device.

Novarider, I think that it's just the frustration of people coming on the forum and making posts with big bold red letters that say "YOU BRICKED MY NC!!!" and the like... As many others (including myself) have already stated, it's very difficult to brick a NC. I've yet to do it and I've done some VERY off-the-wall stuff with mine. My personal frustration comes from those two things.
So, sorry if you felt wrongly persecuted by my post. It wasn't directed only at you but at others who have screamed, yelled and lamented about one thing or another "bricking" their NC.
Friends?
Fair enough.
I have a question about this Utility. If I install this will I be able to gain access to the data folder so I can drop some apks into it with root explorer? I would like to be able to use a different keyboard and I was reading I need to be able to rename a keyboard and drop it there for it to work.
I had used adb to install superuser but it didn't do anything once installed so I deleted it

This should do it since the script installs Superuser and Root Explorer can perform the functions mentioned (you may need to hit the button on the top of the program for R/W). As with any mod - proceed with caution or find a step by step to guide you.

I got the droid-x multi-touch keyboard working a few days ago but that was several resets ago as well. Things didn't go exactly perfect for me and there were several reboots where I didn't have a keyboard at all. I can't remember the exact steps I took but, I eventually side-loaded the droid-x keyboard and it worked. I'll tinker more tonight on that. It's beer-thirty now though!

Asus Transformer Browser APK - Working Labs

here's asus's version of the browser apk.
you get the thumbscrolling and working labs.
you lose being able to back page from a flash site (takes about 4-6 quick backs to go back) and you lose some ua strings. only tablet, desktop and mobile-phone are available, so since you can't pick ipad some html5 sites won't stream right since they haven't added android tablet recognition.
back up your browser and browser.odex files.
would it be possible to come up with our own custom browser when source is released?
why dont you just use the one from your tablet?

missing labs option so no quick controls for those who may want it and missing thumb scroll bar.
No offense but you might wanna return your tablet then.. Which version do you have and why would you wanna lose those features??? Just saying..
Those are very nice features but not worth keeping a transformer or xoom over the tab 10.1.
I'm wondering though now that I'm rooted if I can just use this to replace the stock browser completely.
Woohooooo. Replaced the stock browser that came with it and installed this one into the system/app folder. Working great... man I missed my thumb controls. Moreso because of the fullscreen mode...I hated how the address bar took up so much real estate.
Nice!!! Congrats!! I'm glad it all worked out..

What is the best way to go about installing this ?
@madsquabbles: If you have enough patience to read and write Dalvik bytecode, you can make your own mods to the Honeycomb browser today. I modded my Galaxy Tab 10.1's browser to use Duck Duck Go instead of Google as default search, and it works fine. (For the patch and helper scripts, see github/Sakurina/mitsuki. I'd link, but not enough posts for that yet.)
@xManMythLegend: Back up the browser, uninstall the browser using the commands from CyanogenMod's wiki (the "Make a barebones system" page linked on the front page), and then installing the apk should work via adb. If you don't uninstall the browser beforehand, you'll run into an inconsistent certificates error message.
The downside is that using a custom browser breaks delta updates such as the 3.1 update; it tries to modify the browser, can't find it, and bails out.
Thanks. Without root wasn't sure ...it'd been awhile

but thanks for the tip. i'd have quite a bit of learning to do in order to start playing with the code. maybe i'll dig around for the heck of it and see what samsung did to fix the back page button for flash sites.

Cant install this. Tried adb and terminal both telling me read only.
ADB finds device adb shell doesnt respond to remount
terminal just says read only file when i try to remove.+
Rooted earlier today , updated sdk. Any thoughts ?
i believe you have to type "adb remount" first then you can write to the system.
i use root explorer b/c is easier for and i don't have to use a pc.
here's the link for the xoom browser. i didn't get a chance to try it out yesterday.

I have not tried adb for quite some time so perhaps there is a problem with commands or the order I am trying. It always finds the device. Adb shell starts fine but fails on remount.
Root explorer also gave me read only but I was trying to replace the apk as I failed to uninstall per cyanogen wiki.
you have to click the r/o r/w button at the top in root expl (if this doesn't work then you're either not rooted, haven't installed su, or haven't given root expl su permissions). then rename your browser.apk to browser.apk.bak (or whatever) and same with the browser.odex. it's probably safer to back them up to you pc too.
then copy over the other browser.apk and fix the permissions.. forgot what it is, but it has to be the same as all the other apks 644 i think. reboot and launch the browser.

then copy over the other browser.apk and fix the permissions.. forgot what it is, but it has to be the same as all the other apks 644 i think. reboot and launch the browser.

Thank you. Got it working with root explorer.
Had to look up what 644 was.

Enable multi user / guest account feature on Lollipop

The multi user and guest account feature is not available on either of the two recent releases of Lollipop for the Z3v. I did some research and it appears this is the case, not only on other Verizon handsets like the Droid Turbo and the Galaxy S5 / S6, but a few other non-VZW devices as well. I'm not sure why it was removed but apparently it's just hidden. It can be enabled and I followed the instructions for doing this for the various other devices and can report that it works for our Z3v (see attached screenshots).
I've kind of cleaned up the instructions and put them below. Usual disclaimer - I'm not responsible for anything that may happen to you or your cat if you choose to do the following. You DO need root access to edit and write to the system file.
** To be safe, please make a backup of your phone and/or a copy of the build.prop file that you are going to edit.
Get ES File Explorer. Run it and enable Root Explorer setting. (You may be able to use any file explorer and editor with root access but this is used most in the instructions and works.)
With ES File Explorer, go to device/system/ and find the file: build.prop
Choose to edit it with ES Note Editor.
Scroll to the end of the file and type in the following:
fw.max_users=5
fw.show_multiuserui=1
Save the file.
I'm not sure if the next step is required but it was in half the instructions I saw, and I did it myself: Click and hold the file, go to Properties, and then change the permissions to Read, Write & Execute. [all three]
Reboot your phone.
When you're up and running, access multi user mode by pulling down your notification shade and then clicking on your user icon at the top right corner.
Notes so far:
A guest user does not have access to the original user's files on the internal drive - the guest user has their own file directory. The guest CAN access the External SD Card, though.
Therefore, an app such as Movie Creator can and will create a "highlight" movie that is composed from photos that are saved on the external SD Card. Just keep this in mind as far as privacy.
There is a per user option that lets you decide whether or not the additional users can use the phone and access the text messages. If you disable this ability, while they cannot open the phone app to make a call, the CAN receive an incoming call.
You can find out more about the nuances of additional users with your Google Fu.
Enjoy!
Wow! Great work!

Thanks! I really wanted this feature and it seemed like not many people care too much about it. It's my way of circumventing the awful permissions control we currently have in Android. That is, there are apps I want to use but refuse to install because of their overreaching permission requirements (contacts, etc) and so I can now create a second user with a new "dummy" Gmail account that has no sensitive information and install these apps without worrying.
By the way, something neat I figured out about this. Additional user accounts are not allowed to side load apps (the toggle to install from unknown sources is grayed out). I figured out that if the main user / owner restores an app through Titanium Backup, any other currently existing user will have it installed for some reason. I don't know why this happens but it's a neat glitch that gets you around that restriction.
Well I think most people simply don't let others touch their phones and so don't have a use for multiple user accounts. I find that my phone, as big as the screen is, is becoming more and more of a computer / tablet replacement. I like the idea of a multiuser functionality, but mostly to hide my own stuff. I'll silk never let anyone else touch my phone!
The use for multi-user that I've seen that makes the most sense is people with children. They will create a user profile for the child so they can't get into any of the parent's stuff or settings. That or the guest profile which will let them do whatever the heck they want without screwing up the phone.
Aside from that I have read that devs find the feature very useful for testing. Heck, that's not a bad idea to install and test apps, in general.
uh oh.
Well something didnt work. Maybe a certain build I have to be on or what. I followed the instructions to a t. Now stuck on endless boot loop. Only bad part is I'm on as hotel room working out of town without a laptop Or pc to fix it. I used a one click root just today and didn't install a proper recovery. Any thoughts

I had a problem with this also twice cause I'm always doing stupid things to my phone my guess is you didn't change the system to r/w but modified it anyway or you used a editor that would let you input the correct values I used s manager I think. As far as getting your phone working you could try safe mode or maybe a factory reset if you can hold power and the volume button down and enter recovery.

I believe the mistake was made when i changed the permissions per instructions. I finially got to my house and im using adb to freeze the loop then going to push a script over to fix the permissions. I will update when i get it done and I will post my fix. Also I used ES file explorer, which i have already used it for years now. Never had anything like this happen before. it just baffles me. I have never got any instructions off of XDA that led to any malfuntion of my phone. But oh well, sh!+ happens.

Hey! I'm so sorry! I got a couple of new phones (Droid Maxx 2 and LG G4) and have been using those phones so I haven't been checking these forums like I was when I just had the Z3v. Really sorry to hear that you ran into that kind of trouble . Thing is, the instructions above are culled from 4 or 5 different sets of instructions for various devices that I found across the web. I performed them step by step myself while cross referencing them to each other and combined them all to the instruction set above as I did it. Did you ever fix it with the method you mentioned? I'm curious if it was the permissions thing (odd, because it worked for me).

it is guys if done right your system needs to be switched to r/w then go back to r/o after modifying the build prop if you modify in r/o you will get bootloop to a hard brick it depends.

Well I kinda fixed it. I went and bought a HTC M9. Lol but not yet, I'm still working on it. I have found scripts to run, even a specific build.prop fix to push, but I have windows 10 and couldn't get adb to find the device. Plus I'm a little rusty. So I broke out my old windows 7 laptop I have used just for rooting an modding phones and tablets. I did get adb and fastboot to find it once. Then some reason lost it. I didn't have it ready to go. But I'm almost 100 percent sure I can get it. Just need to play around with it a little bit more. Having trouble with drivers etc. I will let you know when I have it.
And didn't really hurt my feelings getting the phone I truly want. I never had problems with HTC since I was flashing roms on my old window phones. I just want my pictures I cannot replace.
"Run it and enable Root Explorer setting. (You may be able to use any file explorer and editor with root access but this is used most in the instructions and works.)"
Alas- I am not rooted, and therefore can not enable "Root Explorer" option. Unless someone has some other suggestions- I think I can't do this unless I'm rooted.
Well this is probably what I did to brick my first z3v.
I don't suggest anyone do this at all. There does seem to be an issue with the permission setting on the build.prop file. If it's not reset correctly after editing, you'll get stuck in a loop or worse. I'm stuck in bootloop, but can get into recovery. I made a backup hoping to learn how to edit the build.prop (delete it and rename the copied original to set it back as it was). But I can't even run the original zip that GigaSPX made up for us. (I don't have a backup like I hought I did.)
Anytime I try to install the flashable prerooted zip it tells me it's done after 2 seconds and says;
set_perm: some changes failed
I'm typing this on my z2 tablet, which has the multi user feature enabled. I'm going to see if RootExplorer will give me some clues as to why this doesn't work.
In the mean time I'm hoping someone can help me out?
If love to get this feature to work, but it has to be safe.
Just checked the build.prop on my tablet and got no clue.

a backup usually means going into your twrp and hit the back up button and make a copy of your system including data and all that. This is mandatory before messing with the build prop. If you want Pm me your build prop and I will send it back to you. With multi user enabled.
Yup, I know what a back-up is and how to do it, and I know it's a must before messing with the build.prop. I just really thought I had done it recently...
-and I had! But I forgot that a few days ago I bought myself a Christmas present; a 200 Gb micro SD, and copied most of the contents to the new card from my old one. I chose not to copy the backup because I had planned to make some changes and create a more recent backup. Never happened though because I got side tracked loading music and such. Lol!
So I'm all back together, but would still like to play with this feature. So I'm going to give it another shot.
A guest user does not have access to the original user's files on the internal drive - the guest user has their own file directory. The guest CAN access the External SD Card, though.

Perhaps the wrong thread but: enabled multi user on a Cube T8 only to find that guest and other user can access INTERNAL sd but not external sd. I'd rather have it the other way round. So the kids (other users) can use the whole of 32 GB sd card rather than me having to share the small internal sd with them.
Any ideas how to fix this? Phablet is not rooted btw.
got bootloop..... but i'm safe as i've backup.... through recovery..
I've inserted two lines and fell in bootloop
Thanks bro.. working....!!!! but second step is not needed...

LG G8X Thinq(Sprint) adb shell

So i got the new G8X and have been trying desperatey to just access the system files to remove some bloatware.
Problem is it only gives me access from \User\0 and on. I tried to delete them through adb on windows but everytime i try and run adb shell the phone automatically disconnects.
I know i have all the updated drivers cause it recognizes the phone through windows and adb when i type adb devices
but as soon as i execute adb shell it disconnects. Does anyone have a solution for this?
Any sort of feedback would be greatly appreciated. i Have a 30 day return policy in effect if i cant gain access to any of that i plan on returning the phone.
Thanks for reading
Edit: Im dumb switching ports and usb cable resolved issue.
If anyone hears anything about root access please advise. Thanks all
I have had my phone on ADB and sending and reading data from it two nights in a row, I have not seen this problem at all. I can run adb shell no problem. Sorry! I know it's a stupid suggestion, but can you try a different USB cable/port on your PC?

The problem might be that if you run from power shell command, first type cmd and press enter.

I bought unlocked but i'm using it with T-Mobile and its getting WiFi calling and HD Voice and everything. Works really well and am getting good service/signal with it on T-Mobile.
Yeah, as suggested, I also used it in CMD and not in powershell…

As simple as your suggestion was it lets me command it through cmd now., switching the cable worked.
Still through the phone itself i cant access system directories. and its not like i cant change things it just flat out wont let me view them at all.
The end goal is to get root/custom recoveries so i can install magisk and xposed, if you hear anything let me know. And thanks again!

No problem! Glad that worked.
I can view system directories, and I read them as well. However, I definitely can't change anything and don't have write access either.
Will be open to suggestions/attempts in the future!

I use Solid Explorer. So, some of the files you can physically see in the explorer, but if you try to open it, the text is garbled. It was only after I started doing adb pull that I could actually see/read the files themselves.
