Ok...so I've been putting off updating my vibrant to a custom rom for awhile now. I know there is lots of info on how to install a custom rom...but I'm wondering what everyone does to prepare?
1. How do you backup your apps? Titanium? Just reinstall from market?
2. Other than installed apps, what other stuff do you backup?
3. Is there a way to do a 100% backup(like an image) so I can go back to my phone a it is right now? If for some reason I wanted to...
4. What else needs to be done to prepare before starting the update process?
5. How long does it usually take to backup, install new rom and then tweak and reinstall everything to get you back to where you were before beginning?

I typically flash in this order if things:
1. Update all my apps.
2. Open titanium backup and update busybox and check settings (i have my backup folder set to "/sdcard/external_sd/TitaniumBackup" cause I like everything on my external sd card.
3. Check filters in TB set to all.
4. Run batch "Backup all apps + all system data" (i have about 150-200 apps installed at any given time, it does take a while to process that many apps, so i make sure that "settings> applications> development> keep screen awake while plugged in." is checked.
5. Reboot into clockwork recovery and perform a Nandroid backup if you so desire, and then flash disable_voodoo if you have it and reboot.
6. Walk away for 20 minutes while voodoo is disabled, then reboot.
7. Boot back into recovery and flash a custom rom.
8. Enable voodoo and reboot for voodoo conversion then into rom.
9. Reboot again after letting freshly installed rom sit untouched for ten minutes or so then open market sign in to google account.
10. Open TB and settings were set to auto sync so were good to go after it loads all info from os. Run batch of your choice but I start with restore all user apps w/ data, then restore system data.
11. Once all is done reboot into recovery and delete cache's and reboot.
This is just what I do, I rarely make a nandroid backup image because I've yet to every need to restore from one and I've ben flashing since my htc dreem, feel free to critic.

EDIT: it usually takes a cpl hours to be back to normal operation where you have everything setup the way you had it.
EDIT: I also didn't mention that I also backup and restore my adw settings. (but not till after the second boot when I log in to google.)

the only thing i don't agree with the above post, is backing up and restoring your system data with titanium. if you inadvertantly restore system data to a different rom, it can cause lots of problems. there are a few pieces of system data that are safe, but not all. the system data i have successfully moved without problems from rom to rom are:
Bluetooth Pairings
[Bookmarks] Browser
[Calendar] Calendar Storage
[User Dict] com.android.providers.userdictionary
[Contacts/calls] Contacts Storage
and
Wifi Access points
Basically in titanium, the system data listed in green should be safe to restore, anything in red, let it be.

Yeah your right, Im selective when restoring system data, I typically only restore:
Bluetooth Pairings
[User Dict] Bluetooth Pairings
[User Dict] com.android.providers.userdictionary
[sms/mms prefs] Messaging
[sms/mms/apn] dialer storage

The items in red and with a check mark icon won't restore anything because there's no data according to the legend... I don't know why their included in the list? Or am i missing something. I'm sure there's a thread for this topic somewhere and I would look If I wasn't so gd lazy! haha but anyway I haven't had any problems restoring select system items in TB when restoring apps and data after a custom rom install. I've flashed between all the major roms on xda since the phone's release.

I just had a couple of questions about the whole ROMS and how to install them. I have my Vibrant rooted but I'm still not 100% sure how to root. What I looked up online is the following:
1-Use ROM manager to download recover image.
2-Download ROM and save it on the SD.
3-Boot into recovery (1st question can I boot into recovery through ROM manager or do I have to do it the manual way?)
4-Select option reinstall packages which take you to the ClockWork Recovery
5-Wipe date from phone (2nd question I've heard about NANDROID back ups but what exactly are they and what do they do? If i make a nandroid back up then wipe will I still be able to restore my phone to its previous condition through this back up?
6-install .zip from SD and Voila you have ROM.
So aside from the two obvious questions I just want to know if I have the correct steps?
The help would be greatly appreciated thank you!

1) Yes Rom Manager will let you boot directly into clockwork recovery.
2) Yes Nandroid will make a complete backup of your phone software and apps installed, so when you restore a backup it will be the same as when you backed it up.
3) Make your nandroid before wiping anything! Other wise your steps are ok.
Awesome!! And I can make the nandroid back up from clock work right? Also can I move the back up to like a usb or do I have to keep it on the phone?

Yes, you use clockwork to make the nandroid bakup. And if you like you can store the backup on your USB drive. Just copy the folder over and you will be all good. You only have to have the backup on the phone if you intend to restore a backup.
Whats great about Clockwork and Nandroid which works well with Clockwork is I have my stock rom all the way to my current. I just keep making backups and I restore if I want to compare. I have the following on my phone.
Stock
Vibrant4
Vibrant5
Vibrant6
Vibrant7
When I get a Rom just the way I like it I make a backup of it so if/when I have to leave it and possibly come back to it I just flash it. Also I would recommend Titanium Backup so you can backup your apps and reload them even if you go back on a rom. Makes reloading settings easier in your apps too.
Ok, so I just made a back up using rom mangers back up rom feature, am I supposed to specifically look for something that says "nandroid"?

You will only see "nandroid" if you boot your phone into clockwork recovery.
And, no, you don't specifically need to look for it.

Maybe I'm missing something, but wouldn't you want to keep your backup somewhere NOT on the phone? Because if you brick your phone, or corrupt it or something, wouldn't you have a tough time restoring with your backup file? I don't really get it.
Well I've done it I tried out Eugenes Vibrant Hybrid ROM and it was nice but I'll just wait for something else later on. my only question is once you install a ROM i would have had to DL all my apps again which is gay...
anyway i used Rom manager to create my back up of my stock build after playing with Eugene's ROM for a bit I restored my back up like a G.

Yeah, I loaded Eugene's ROM and played around with out a bit, then I downloaded rom manager from the market and restored the back up I saved on my sd. It was quick and painless.

2. Copy the entire backup directory to your PC for "just in case" scenarios.
3. Make a backup of your user installed apps using Titanium backup, and copy it over to your PC.
4. Download the ROM (i.e. Eugene's Vibrant9.zip) to your internal SD card.
5. Boot into clockworkrecovery (I use ROM Manager for that)
6. Install ROM.zip from SD card
7. Reboot into normal boot.
8. Verify the basic functionality of the phone, and make sure your satisfaction level goes a notch up.
9. Download Titanium backup from the market and install it.
10. Restore Titanium backup.
11. Crack a beer, enjoy your accomplishments, and DO NOT ask when CM6 comes rolling around

In regards to titanium backup... do you need the DONATE version to restore the apps properly. OR will they restore with all our data, but just not link the market? Thanks in advance!
Any way to get into clockwork recovery without rom manager or if the phone isn't booting up at all? I guess I could always leave an update.zip of clockwork mod on the phone. Is that what everyone else does?

I have a paid version, I don't think you would need the full version to properly restore the backup. I used it once to flash a different ROM, and I didn't have to re-purchase Titanium Backup again, I don't believe so.
Well every one tells me that the paid version of titanium is better because it updates your apps straight from the market or something like that. I just downloaded the paid version so I'll let you know how that works out.

You can also pack the backed up user apps into update.zip and re-install the packages from the recovery, so no need to re-download the Titanium Backup, it should be there once you re-install packages from the recovery after booting into your new ROM.

Well you may be getting ahead of yourself. Froyo-based ROMs have a built-in capability to move individual apps to your SD card. What version of KF are you running? If it's something recent, then go to Menu/Settings/CyanogenMod settings/Application settings and checkmark "Allow application moving".
You don't have to flash any zip for this. That would be for the "old" style of Apps2SD, which although not impossible to use with Froyo ROMs, requires some advanced steps that's honestly a PITA and not worth it in my opinion.
Note that not all apps can successfully be moved to the SD card, and you should not move any apps that have widgets you want to use, because if you do the widgets won't be available in the Widget selection screen.
To move the apps, go to Menu/Settings/Applications/Manage applications and select the app you want to try to move. After a slight delay, you'll see a screen with the option to "Move to SD card". If it fails then it just doesn't work with that particular app, press the back button and try it again with another.
There are apps for easier handling of moving apps in Froyo. There's one on the market I would have recommended but it recently (through an upgrade) became a crippled pay app so luckily I still have the old version.
You can use Titanium Backup to try to move all your apps to your SD card, and then you can go back in to Manage applications and move the individual apps that have widgets you want to use, back to the phone memory.

I just flashed the newest Workshed gingerbread rom (2.4). I came from 2.1 which is where I first started putting apps on my SD card. In flashing 2.3 I did a full data + dalvik wipe, flashed rom and flashed gapps per instructions. So there's the history, now to my question:
I'm trying to restore all my apps and those that I moved to the SD card in 2.1 are still showing up in the .android_secure folder on my SD card (as viewed on my computer) but not showing up as available apps on my phone. What I want to know is if I can restore all my apps from that folder or if I should just re-install all of them, which isn't a huge problem it would just be easier to restore and I'm lazy lol. Also, if I have to reinstall the apps, should I delete the ones from 2.1 that are in that folder?

This is confusing. 2.1 doesn't have native Apps2SD like Froyo and Gingerbread (2.2 and 2.3) have. The Apps2SD available for 2.1 ROMs use a separate partition on your SD card, not the .android-secure folder, which is only placed there by Froyo and GB (or yourself).
Do you have a nandroid of your old ROM from before you flashed GSB? If so, nandroid GSB and then restore your 2.1 nandroid and use Titanium Backup or My Backup off the Android Market to back up and restore your apps. If this is too painful without buying the pay versions of those apps (more useful, in TB you can do a batch backup and restore of all your apps instead of one at a time), then yes you should reinstall your apps manually. TB or My Backup will also backup and restore your apps' data, though, so you wouldn't have to re-enter all your apps individual settings.
Additionally, in the future, you should use some method to wipe the contents of the .android-secure folder when flashing a new ROM or a new version of a ROM, unless you are attempting a flashover (not wiping data, just wiping Dalvik cache), which is at least 50% of the time not completely successful (some things may not work correctly).
You can delete the folder manually, or...
There's an app called ROM Manager on the market. GSB (so far) also includes it. If you choose the option to "flash" the ClockworkMod Recovery from ROM Manager, it will not actually overwrite Amon RA (assuming that's what recovery you use currently), it will allow you to load CWM Recovery from Amon RA by choosing (in Amon) to flash "update.zip", which ROM Manager places there after following the above steps.
The reason I'm detailing this is because CWM Recovery, when you choose it's Wipe Data/Factory Reset option, also wipes the contents of the .android-secure folder, and Amon RA Recovery does not. Also, using the ROM Manager method, you can still keep Amon RA Recovery on your phone, so you can have the best of both worlds.
I meant worksheds GSB version 2.1 sorry. Yeah I'll definitely follow your advice to clean up my .android_secure folder for next time, I broke down and re-installed all my apps already and set up Titanium backup so I don't have to do that again. I just wasn't sure whether or not I should delete the contents of that folder or if I could recover my apps from it. Thanks for the help!

Im on my way to flash Axura 2.2.5.7 on my rooted vibrant . I titanium backed up all my system data and all apps using ‘back up all apps + system data’ feature of titanium. I, then, downloaded Rom Manager *free version… and flashed clockworkmod recovery…then rebooted into recovery and made a nandroid back.
I have now downloaded ODIN 3 v 1.70 on my computer.
I have been reading various guides (including vibrant wiki and bible) on how to root and flash roms.
Since I did ‘flash clockworkmod recovery’ yesterday..do I need to do it again?
Can any one direct me to a step by step process on flashing the Axura Rom.
I guess it’s the fear of the unknown while flashing for the very first time.

EDIT: I have copied the titanium folder from internal memory to my pc just in case. I also would like to make a back up of rom manager (nandroid backup or whatever it is caleld) onto my computer... How do I do that? I wasn't ablt to locate the folder.

The only other thing you need to do, is put the Axura2257.zip (Or whatever it's name is) on the INTERNAL memory card & flash via clockwork Mod or Rom Manager
sorry..a noob here and it might be a stupid question: Can I also use ODIN to flash the rom? I feel I would be more comfortable working through ODIN.

Im telling you!, its less the hassle and way easier to do it through Clockwork Mod

Just make sure you have two files on your 16g internal memory - Update.zip and the Axura.zip(can be named anything other than Update.zip for obvious reasons) file.
Reboot the phone into recovery. If it's blue then hit reinstall packages until it turns green with more options. This may take two times so don't freak if it's still blue after the first, just do it again.
Once in the green recovery go to install file from SD and select the Axura.zip file. Agree to everything and let it run it's course. Once done hit reboot now and enjoy.

Woah.. Were you on Android 2.1? Don't restore settings if you were.
Voodoo just converts to EXT4 (Which is faster)

You can't to my knowlege... 2.1 & 2.2 are very different, and if you restore the settings & apps then there are going to be allot of problems.. I would just reflash it and manually setup the settings this time, and then backup everything up for the next ROM you choose..
that sucks. I have alot of apps (around 70/80). I had customized settings on them. Its sad not being able to restore those apps and their settings. I can do with system settings.
But overall thanks alot for a great phone experiences. its extremely snappy now and im loving my phone again hehe...
Two things from my experience.
1. You should be able to restore all your apps you backed up in Titanium Backup as it seems to be able to tell what apps won't work with Froyo. You'll see them with a line through them in Titanium. Just restore missing apps with data using the batch feature. Do not restore the one with + all system data.
Then go to Backup/Restore at the top and scroll down to green [SMS/MMS/APN] Dialer Storage and click that and restore it too (this is your text messages). You must restart your phone now for it all to take effect.
2. After you complete #1 - Hit up the market for Voodoo Toggle Reboot app (free). Once it's open you can Enable/Disable Voodoo with it. Click it if it's not green and then hit Reboot Now to activate it. You'll hear Linda talking to you while voodoo installs which may take a bit so don't worry.
Voodoo changes the file system to ext4 which is way faster and very stable. Your phone will fly with it.
You will have to setup new settings for everything else this time, but if you use Launcher Pro you'll be able to backup your desktop settings for next time. Once you get everything the way you like it, backup with Launcher Pro and then with Titanium Backup for next time.
Make sure you don't flash anything else through clockwork with voodoo active unless the Dev says it's ok to do so. An example would be when Axura 2.2.5.8 comes out it'll probably be ok to flash without messing with voodoo (crosses fingers).
I tried flashing the Rom yesterday and was successful. The issues I had revolve around restoring my apps. I used My Backup Root for stock to Froyo, but this time it seemed as though the apps were on the phone and the card, which cause an error stating that I didn't have enough memory. What should I have done to restore the apps to preserve the memory? I also received force close error for SetCPU, SlideIt (which I love), and a few others.
Also, what is the benefit of partitioning my sd card and does doing so erase it's current contents?

Regarding your nightly question, they are full ROMs...the difference between them is the code that was committed within the previous 24 hours. Of course that also means that, in theory, some of the nightlies could be 100% the same...anyway, the nightlies can be a beautiful thing or a disasterous thing...usually if there's an issue with a nightly it is quickly found by those who flash each nightly and it is brought up around 3.2 million times and it is typically fixed by the next nightly.
Partitioning usually does mean a wipe of data on the SD. Careful!
When I upgraded to a 32GB flash from the stock 2GB from my Aria, I backed up the entire contents and restored on the new one. Apparently there is volume information stored somewhere (not sure where) and the phone couldn't recognize the card and asked me to partition it.
Because I had a backup, I decided to do so, but instead of partitioning for the entire size of the chip, it partitioned only 2GB!
So I had to stick it into a reader and repartition it manually and then selectively restore music, etc back on the card.
After that it worked just fine. So short version: yes it does.

You will need to creaate an sd-ext partition to fix the issue of installing (larger) apps with CM7.
The best way would be through ROM Manager.

Installed the RC2 and can't connect to a hidden SSID wifi network.
That is a known issue with the wifi driver on cm7 thus far. Not sure if it will be corrected though. Anyone else know if it is in the works?

I believe if you flash to nightly 14 all will be good, not 100% sure though.

As far as I know there are no plans to change it. But then again we weren't supposed to get fm radio working either...

Great input from everyone. Thanks! Following up on the sd-card partitioning... I have a new 8g card and want to more to CM7. If I partition it, what happens when I restore the backed up app using My Backup Root? And, what is the best partition configuration, why, and what info get store in each section (ext)?

The easiest way to partition is using your ROM manager.
Just select the max size for SD-EXT (I think it would got to 512MB), and none for swap.
I'm not sure if this would have any effect on your backup - I myself started out from scratch and got my apps from the market even though I had made an Astro backup...
You will store all your stuff - music, pictures etc in the normal partition. The SD-EXT will be automatically handled by the phone.
Tried flashing Nightly 22 on my Aria from 17. I spent a lot of time customizing 17. Is there a way to keep all of the old home screens? Also, GPS lock isn't working for me. Using MyBackup Root for Apps, but it seems to duplicate the apps?

You should be able to flash each new nightly without losing any of your settings/customizations/homescreens and apps.
While upgrading from ROM manager, just check the backup option, don't check wipe data and cache.
I can confirm this works transitioning from 14 to 22 because I just did it yesterday night
As for the GPS problem, thats a known issue - the workaround is to make a nandroid backup of your current cm7, then do a complete phone reset, then do a nandroid restore of cm6 or 6.1 (hope you have one), do another factory reset, and restore your cm7 from the backup you took in the 1st step

first of all, i would never suggest using rom manager for things such as that. historically it has only caused problems and has been more of an inconvenience than anything. second of all, when you boot into CWM and do it the right way, don't wipe data, it's suggested but not necessary that you wipe cache and dalvik, then flash the rom and you'll be good.
Thanks to both of you. Big help and not deleting the data did the trick. Looks like I'm good to go and GPS is working well again. Is there a way to ensure I don't have duplicate apps taking up space on the card and phone? I'm getting errors on moving some apps to the sd card.

Not all apps can be moved to the FAT32 partition on the SD card. Widgets also, won't work properly if moved to the SD FAT32.
If you need more memory, look into (read up) partitioning your sd card with a ext3 partition and installing S2E or Dark Tremor a2sd (DT a2sd).

Oh, I had no idea about that, thanks for the info.
I've been using ROM manager without any problems so far, apart from one lately, that when I reboot to recovery, I always get an error screen - exclamation mark in triangle...but I just pull the battery and reboot into recovery manually and it starts whatever command I had given it (backup/new rom) automatically...
So, I'm kinda new at this, as I was told by the forums when trying to post this question in the official gsb thread
I got an eris a few weeks ago for free, and its my first android device. I used it for a while, then rooted it and installed GSB.v2.0-CM7.0.0_RC2_STABLE
I've got it all customized and got some cool apps installed and am loving it. My question is, can I just go into recovery and install GSB.v2.6-CM7.0.0_RC4_STABLE and be good to go, or do I have to back up all my apps and settings and start fresh? I have most of my apps moved to sd. Will they be okay? Also, I went into system and changed my bootscreen, lock and unlock sounds, and added a boot script. I will have to back those up and redo them if anything, right?

You will lose your bootscreen during any ROM flash, plus whatever your boot script is I assume it's somewhere where it would get lost, too.
This may not work for your apps and system settings, but it's safe to try, then you'll know for sure if it'll work.
1. Go to your recovery and create a Nandroid backup of everything just the way it is.
2. Wipe Dalvik cache ONLY, do NOT Factory Reset/Wipe Data.
3. Flash GSB v2.6 and immediately after flash the GAPPs package, just like before.
4. If you had flashed the Cache2Cache script before you have to do that again as well, right after flashing the GAPPs.
5. Reboot and test everything to see if everything works to your satisfaction.
If it's doesn't then you have the Nandroid backup that you can restore. I can provide instructions that I use, and at least one other person has recently used and reported good about which uses Titanium Backup, but you'd really probably want to buy it off the market for it to be easier to do Batch backups and Restores (choose Menu/Batch from TB's main screen).
1. First, make sure the option is checked in TB's preferences to "Force to same location". FYI I do NOT use the checkbox for "Migrate system data". At THIS time (you can change it later), I suggest changing the Compression method to No Compression. This'll make sense in step 6.
2. From Menu/Batch, choose "Backup all user apps + system data".
3. Boot into recovery, do a COMPLETE wipe (Factory Reset/Data/Dalvik cache), flash your ROM and then your GAPPs (it's recommended at this time to NOT flash C2C just yet).
4. Reboot, SKIP setup of your Google account, go into Preferences/CyanogenMod settings/Application and check the box for "Allow application moving". I also change "Install location" to External, but that's up to you; this is just what works for me.
5. Boot back into recovery and flash C2C and reboot the ROM again.
6. Use File Manager, which comes with GSB and navigate to the TitaniumBackup folder (not TitaniumBackup-system). Find the Titanium Backup apk app installer file and reinstall it from here.
7. In TB, under Menu/Batch, choose "Restore all apps with data".
After this is done, reboot. If this works for you and you want to do this again in the future, you can make a copy of the Titanium Backup apk file to some other folder, that way you can re-enable compression in TB's preferences for future backups. I recommend LZ0.
I've been using this second method for the last 3-4 new versions of GSB, don't know how it would work with such a big jump in versions. If neither of these work for you, let me know if you still need help.
You will lose your bootanimation and any scripts you have but your apps will be fine. Like WRT said above just make sure you do a nandroid back up in recovery then wipe cache only. Once that's done flash 2.6 and gapps. Enjoy!

Awesome. I had done a nandroid and ti backup to prepare, but I never saw the option in ti for force same location. I know how to backup and reinstall my lockscreen sounds and bootani, so I've got that down. Now that I look there's a 2.7 release which integrates the sdcard speed fix, so I won't need my init script now
Thanks for clearing that up for me, I'll post back when its done and tested if there's any issues.
Update: Well everything worked great! Thanks for all the help guys
