Does this new update fix contacts blurred image problem? - XPERIA X10 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Is the blurry image display problem for incoming and outgoing calls fixed? I know the image doesn't look blurry if the contact has facebook account. But that image looks stretched hence looks ugly. Plus only few of my friends have FB account. Still I prefer to assign my own collection of photos to my contacts. In 1.6, the image displayed in great resolution.
I read about SE Sync solution but when I set up SE Sync account my Google contacts don't get sync'd from phone to SE website where I thought I can update the images. I have to create new contact on SE website and add image there. So, I basically end up with duplicate contacts grouped as SE Sync and Google Contacts which is a pain to maintain as I prefer to stick with Google Sync. But, even that solution has the same problem as with Facebook image problem which looks stretched from top to bottom.
I know about some apps that display high resolution images for calls but SE style is very cool. That feature worked so flawlessly in 1.6 and is such a basic and most visible feature. I guess SE developers and QA time completely missed as they probably used SE sync, Facebook, or never cared about using images for contacts.

the blurry images are an android problem, not SE

How come pictures updated with Sony Ericsson Sync on http://www.sonyericsson.com/user or Facebook don't have problem except for the aspect ratio issue?

Presumably because it's not using the google sync app.

Even if you don't use Google Sync, if you just create a new contact on phone and assign a image to it, we see the same issue.
Anyone know which folder has the images that get displayed when we make a call? Maybe replacing those files with higher resolution photos will solve this issue.

use the timescape pic, it's fine. when you create a contact, it syncs to your google account. once it's sync'd, it will be blurry. if this was an SE issue, you would not see this issue on EVERY 2.1+ HDPI device.

I am amazed reading about use timescape pic. First, I am talking about contacts who don't have Facebook or Twitter accounts. They don't show up with Timescape pic for my firmware version and I believe it must be the same for all. Second, even if you use the Timescape pic the person in the picture looks thin and tall as the picture aspect ration is stretched at the top and bottom. AND I am talking about the display of picture while the we are on call with the contact AND NOT when you view Info screen of the contact.

X10 1.6 it 's no problem about contact photo ,it's very clear.
Has one any inquired with SE to see if there is a certain resolution the pictures need to be? or even dimensions might make a difference.

This problem is caused when the contact pictures are synced with gmail. They upload in low quality. So when you download them they are going to be low quality

I have the same problem like ppp1974. It's very annoying, but I don't find any solution yet. Shame on SE

Sorry I'm new here, lurking for UK 2.1 update news, so haven't seen it myself, but... I believe the pixellated contact photos is an android enforced 96 x 96 pixel limitation. Certainly when syncing with google contacts, there are hoardes of people saying the limit should be lifted or a push from phone to google account, rather than google able to push the 96 pixel limitted one. Several threads / requests on google code website. It is dissapointing if SE have changed this, as indicated by posters here, it seems to work well on 1.6...

contact photos work well on X10 1.6
Anyone solve this?
It seems that 2.1 is trying to stretch the contact pictures from the native resolution (from the contact list) which is making them blurry.
if so then sux, anyone tried sync them with timescape and then use facebook sync??
dunno it that can help us
Problem solved..
I found that when joining contacts from phone with facebook contacts it makes a blurry photo.
BUT when joining contacts with facebook I had two choices:
- 1.st was Contacts name, facebook icon and my email address.
- 2.nd was Contacts name, facebook icon and just Facebook or Timescape.
The second option makes crisp contact photos.
It works for me. If anything unclear send me a PM.
(edit):
If you go to edit your contact and you see already two facebook accounts in there (one with email address and one just with Timescape under it) then just touch photo under Timescape facebook section and select Set as contact picture.
If you get the fullscreen caller id app and assign pictures from there it fixes it in the phonebook as well. Also i read that this is a general android issue and not only x10.

Bitte this is only a solution if you habe a facebook account.
Same here. Only the default pic from Timescape/default contact app works well, everything else is blurry in call screen (I am not using FB).
EDIT: It is a generally issue because Google only uses pics in I think 96x96. The solutions from other devices is to make another contact with the same name as you already have, but make it as a contact only in your phone (not google contact). After that when you edit this "double" contact, you can assign photo to the contact in the phone and after that phone uses this foto, not that one on the google. The problem is that this solution doenst work on X10 (at leasts not on mine), it makes pics look better, but still it is blurry.
EDIT2: Just for testing purposes, make whole new contact on the phone, assign any photo you want (I have tried photos from 4mpix camera as well as from 12mpix camera - doesnt matter) and still when in call in/out screen, its blurry and here I think the problem is on the X10 part.
it is not genral problem from google it's from se stupidity they were working in 1.6 and i have htc hero with 2.1 and every thing is ok so se should repair this huge mistake with some fix
This method is little strange, but it's working..
Install from market - "Full Screen Caller ID" app, then open and assign any new photos to contacts. Then you must uninstall Caller ID, and that's all.
I think that this application overrides default pics 96x96...

Timescape Facebook Contact Pictures - Need Help For 3rd Party Apps Restriction

Hello!
After the 2.1 update, we all noticed that even if we assign a high-resolution photo as contact picture, while on call still looks ugly.
After messing with the phone, I found that if we link Timescape Facebook contacts to the phone contacts and select to use Timescape Facebook as the contact picture, the pictures looks OK while on call.
Only problem is, third party apps cannot use those pictures, as they are restricted to Timescape and Phonebook. So, in chompSMS for example, pictures don't appear. They don't even appear on the SE Recent Calls Widget.
Is there any work around for this?
I also tried the Photo Unlocker (from Market) but didn't work.

Yes, I know...
Only I was actually asking about a way to un-restrict those contact photos in order for 3rd party application to use them too.
There is a workaround for pictures taken from the Facebook application,
but not for the Timescape Facebook application.
Some dev should help us out! That's the point of this thread.
EDIT: I change the title, as it was indeed misleading!! lol!
Sorry, missed that. I haven't found any work arounds for it sorry. Though I've also found that using photos that you have stored on your sd card yields some nice results. They just won't update with Facebook.

Picture contact is poor and blurry?

I have update my X10 to 2.1 and here are the things I don't like:
- Picture contact is poor and blurry when receiving and making calls even if you used high res pictures.
Is there a fx for this.
No actually cant be fixed but thats a Google Issue other Handsets have this too on Eclair and Froyo.
When saving contacts, save them to the phone and not Google. Of course this would mean no backup of contacts but its definitely a temporary fix for your problem.

I use SyncMyPix to replace the blurry contact pictures with HQ pics.
They also work on the call screen, no blur for me after all
The app syncs with facebook too each time you run it and it recognizes contacts pretty well - without renaming them, like the damn social phonebook does partially . If it links contacts incorrectly, you can easily unlink them and do it manually.
just download it for free in the market!
oh, almost forgot, you have to enable "maximum quality" in settings, otherwise you'll still have blurry pix.
What the he'll does this have to do with development???

I found the Problem skip the Crop and it works and looks good. The cropping is the Problem.
if i edit each contact`s picture, is there any app to backup those images? not all of my contacts are on facebook, so syncmypix wouldn`t do much for me, at least.

Facebook sync -> Contacts image quality

When eclair was officially released to X10, I synchronised my contacts with the facebook application. The resulting contact images were of very poor quality. But the images due to timescape were of high quality, as always.
Is there a way to solve this problem?
And previously, I had synchronised my contacts with SonySync & gmail. After the update, it led to redundant phone numbers and email addresses.
Is there a way to sync contacts with Sonysync, gmail, facebook but still see just one phone number under a contact name?

i have a different issue. my contacts images looks normal, but my timescape pictures are ugly.
A very good question worths a deep in investigation to get a balance resolution best fits to both applications, please post your two sets of resolution, saving our time working further the issue out, thanks.

Why not all my contacts have their FB photo?

Hi everybody,
Previously, I had an HTC Desire HD and when I installed the FB application, all my contacts got synced and the ones without photo started to have the FB photo.
Now on my SG3, just for a few of them appeared the FB photo, however, ALL of them are synced with facebook. I tried to enter on the profile of the person already, restarted the phone, sync, sync all contacts, but some of them just doesn't get the photo (and the name on FB is the same of the contact).
Does any one knows why that happens?
Nobody else with that problem?
Does the contacts of everybody always get the correct pictures from facebook? Or you guys don't use this feature?
Haxsync from Google play does that for you.
Yes, I looked that other applications can do that.
But I wonder if my Galaxy S3 has a problem on it. Because with my HTC DHD it used to work 100%.
Funny, everyone on mine since flawlessly. Only annoyance was when I ticked 'sync with existing contacts ' it synced my friends list with all their email addresses. Just tick display those with phone numbers and it's sorted but it's not perfect at any rate

HTC DHD was in Gingerbread version and facebook official app work pretty well, but devices with Ice Cream sandwich have got lot of problem with official facebook application, one way in order to resolve problem is download from the market a 3rd part applicazion like FriendCaster, it work well with 4.0.x android and also with my nexus one with 4.0.x custom rom =)
I'm not sure if this is what you mean but mine was showing old contact Facebook pictures with the little F in the corner. I had to open each contact, press connections and add the Facebook account. It's been fine since.

Haxsync also doesnt work for me.
The official facebook app for android has really bad syncing, use friendcaster, also has option to save high res pics for contacts.
I do have the same problem. No facebook app, just the sync with facebook option in the contacts account settings. Only a few facebook friends got their profile pictures displayed in contacts.
Maybe something to do with their privacy settings?
I had this too. It's the Facebook app sync feature being ****. Open Facebook and go to your contacts in there and it will refresh their pics and that in turns refreshes your contacts.

Yeah I bought Haxsync, such a waste of money. Are there any 3rd party apps that sync phone numbers from facebook?
HaxSync is mainly for AOSP based ROMs like CM9 and AOKP. Works perfectly on those and loads excellent high quality photos. It doesn't work with Sense 4 ICS devices like the HTC One series. I don't know if it works with TouchWiz ROMs. It'll work perfectly on any ROM with the vanilla Android UI and People app.
HTC devices have Facebook for HTC Sense, which is integrated with the Facebook app. When you sign into the Facebook app, Facebook for HTC Sense links your contacts and downloads reasonably okay quality pictures for them, and also syncs their status, photos and all that. No idea if TouchWiz has a similar feature, but maybe that's why you're not having the same experience you had with HTC Facebook sync.
Though with any ROM, just signing into the Facebook and choosing 'sync all contacts' or 'sync existing contacts' will download profile pictures for the contacts that it can sync, especially if the name matches exactly or you have added email addresses for your contacts. That's the reason only a few contacts got their pictures synced, because maybe they were under a different name than their Facebook name. But in my opinion the Facebook sync is crap, because the pictures it downloads look like 8-bit graphics.

Could Facebook's time line pictures be the problem? instead of people having portrait sized photos, they now have massive landscape pictures?
just a thought
I don't think so, because the Facebook app doesn't sync the cover photo. It syncs the little square profile picture photo, so it won't be any different from before because of the timeline.
