Samrt phone smarter??? For free! - Vibrant Themes and Apps

Just saw this on Gizmodo, it's called Profile Valet. Basically you can set up your system to change based on location or time. Need your ringer off at work, set the time for vibrate only. Want your wifi to come on automatically when you get home, set it for that location. It does more (Dispaly, Sound, Wifi, and Bluetooth. Location, Time or manual. Check it out here...http://gizmodo.com/5728106/app-of-the-day-profile-valet-for-android . I just installed it and will report back. Oh and it's free.

this was one of the main features on the g1, now having a mental block on the name of the app way back then.

It was locale it use to be free also but now they charge 9.99

Doesn't Tasker do the same thing only better? It's a little more complex, but once you figure it out it can do some crazy stuff. I personally don't use any of those features much anymore. Never really seemed to help me 100% of the time. I do miss the old G1 free Android Market launch titles. It was so fun to watch the platform grow.

I haven't used any other app like this nor do I really have a need but I have seen some on here asking for something like this. I tried it out and the UI is real simple and straightforward, couple of clicks and you have different profiles set up and hey it's free which is always good. Strike that! Almost always good.

Yeah tasker does the same there's even a tread on here to share your tasker set up but thats a paid app also . I miss my g1 also got it when it first launched my things change

the interval on the gps check for location profiles seems to be very long. i left a given location to have my wifi on and it stayed on about a hour and a half after i left that place. maybe i have to set something up to turn off wifi once i leave the place?

Turn off all notifications at night?

I am looking for a simple app to automatically schedule my phone to be silent (no notification, no vibration) except for phone calls during the night, with different schedules for weekdays and weekends.
What is my best option?
Thanks
See if there's a version of "Sound Schedule" for Froyo. On 2.1, it does pretty much what you ask for $3.
Actually I just installed and set up timeriffic. Seems to do all I need, I'll test in the next few days. And it's free.
Yep ^^ i was going to suggest timmerific! Locale is another good alternative
I use the free version of Audioguru. Timeriffic's user interface was too confusing for me.
I was going to suggest Tasker. It can do that and a whole ton more.
I also vote for Tasker
I'm going to check out timmerific myself. I'm a Tasker lover, but my wife has zero use for Tasker but her freaking SMS and Email notifications drive me nuts all night, especially when she puts the the phone on the headboard.. blleep bleep bzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz.
In case anyone else has trouble finding it (from the spelling ) here's the appbrain link:
http://www.appbrain.com/app/timeriffic/com.alfray.timeriffic
I have my custom battery profile to turn off data after 15-30 mins and that does the trick at night without having any apps. Might want to look into that.
I use an app called Profile. I have a weekly schedule to adjust volume, bluetooth, wifi, notifications, etc based on time. Has worked flawlessly for almost a year, with plenty of updates & added features.
http ://market.android.com/search?q=pname:com.noimjosh.profile
won't let me post a link, because I haven't posted enough. Sorry.

Another vote for Tasker. Although I'm not sure I'd call it "simple".

Thanks to everyone for the vote of confidence re: Timeriffic.
We love hearing your feedback. For the poster who thought it was a bit confusing, as we look to make it better your thoughts are encouraged. We realize it can always be better, though in most cases it runs silently with no need for an interface other than occasional adjustment to a profile. Looking forward to hearing from everyone.
And thank you for using and sharing our little app.
As I said in another thread, I get a lot of use out of "Good Night!". You can set it to receive phone calls only and even narrow it down to who can call in. Set it to happen during certain hours and certain days of the week.
Phone Schedule
I wasn't satisfied with available apps, so i decided to write my own app that would do all the volume/wifi switching and other stuff automatically according to my own schedule. Several weeks ago i uploaded "Phone Schedule" to google play. It's free and free of ads as well.
Another Scenario
OK, I would love to find a way to turn off all notifications, with the exception of one app. My wife has a weather app installed and wants to use the weather alerts for that app at night but we don't want any other notifications coming across. Is there an easy way, or app, that will do that? I've not been very successful at figuring this stuff out in Tasker. Tasker looks extremely useful but the couple of minutes I get per day to look at it, I just can't get what I want to work.
Thanks
+1 for Tasker
I have mine set on silent at night, but I've also got a list of "VIP" numbers set up that it will allow through.
That's fine, but I'm not talking about cell numbers. That's a different ballgame all together, IMHO.

[Q] Wi-Fi networks screen pop-up

Anyone know how to get rid of the "Select a Wi-Fi network if you would prefer to run the app over Wi-Fi" screen?
I have to press "Do not use Wi-Fi every time and it's pretty annoying.
The only way I know how to get rid of it right now is to completely disable Wi-Fi.

Then disable wifi. Not sure why you'd have it going in the background eating power if you're not actually using it for something.

Thanks. But I was asking if there was a way to get rid of that dialog.
I know I could disable Wi-Fi, I even mentioned it in my first post.
But driving to the local Subway by my work place for my lunch break, I don't want to have to disable it and re-enable it for an hour.
If there is no way to do it, then a "No, there isn't a way" would've sufficed.

I'm going to assume you're either on uberBAMF or a Gingeritis ROM. I believe Chingy and TeamBAMF have attempted to address that issue, but to what success I'm not sure. Might check out themikmik.com threads for an answer or tool to fix it. That's the best I can tell ya. I never use public wifi because it's always slower than LTE.

I tend to use Wi-Fi at my work place to help from burning my battery too quick.
I'm not even on the phone while at work anyway, so sitting idly there with wifi on is a bit better than sitting idly with 4G.
Although I will be installing in a juice defender type app to do some battery testings later.
Hopefully it will help.

I'm not a big fan of task and feature killers. I consistently see a projection of over 40 hours standby on LTE with mine using none of that stuff. Additionally, they tend to hurt performance. I'd be more prone to just dropping a wifi widget someplace. Just my thoughts...

Yeah, I'm just doing some testings to see if it helps any.
Logically, I would think it does help, since while my screen is off, the data is disabled.
But who knows, there might be something within the app itself that's draining the battery life even more.
Thanks for your feedbacks!

Just from experience, some chat clients are simply abusive when it comes to data use. Yahoo was one of them for me. I also try to very rigidly control when certain things sync or update. Seldom used email accounts update once, maybe twice, a day. Weather only every 6 hours instead of EVERY time the widget is viewed which is the default setting. A lot of the sync setting are WAY more frequent than I think they need to be... the information just doesn't change that much. And it's largely stuff you'll never notice it not doing. Also, I underclock my bottem end CPU speeds and undervolt them to the limit. My phone spends the VAST majority of it's time at or below 245MHz, sipping .8volts or less.
I use IM+ Pro and FriendCaster for Facebook.
I do not let FriendCaster ever do any syncing, however, since I don't even check that thing too much and when I do, I can manually sync it myself.
Other than those two, I use Gmail which is on autosync and Moxier Mail for my corporate email which is on direct push mode.
Since we're on the subject, would you know if direct push burns battery unnecessarily also?
I'm not certain how push works, but do not want to put it on auto polling every 3 hours or something.

Real push email service shouldn't need polling at all. The entire idea behind push email service, as basically invented by RIM, is that a remote server serves as a proxy user to your account and allows you remote access through that service. As a result, nothing is sent to your device until the remote service has something to send. I'm not familiar with your email app or setup through the corporate account, but if it's actually real push email, it's the best possible setup to preserve battery life. Real push email service is one of the few sports BlackBerry can still say they own the game. Everything else is just pretending REAL hard, but the harder it pretends, the harder it tends to be on your battery too.

[Q] Who has used Tasker on their SGS2?

Hey,
So I've heard some pretty good things for Tasker. I like the options available, and the configuration seems very detailed and customizable. I've searched on these forums, but some people say that it caused their phone to freeze, and they had to re-flash their system. I'm not sure if it was because they added some stupid setting, or if Tasker genuinely messed up. Does anyone have any input they can add?
i love tasker. been using it for about a year now. i have set up several different tasks and automations....excellent app
I have no issues with Tasker, though I'm barely scraping its potential. Basically using it with Minimalistic Text to give me weather, missed calls and missed SMS notifications.
used it on my captivate for a year and now my S2 for the past 9 days. been very solid. i do some cool stuff. for example:
1. plug in phone between the hours of 10pm and 7am do the following:
phone says: silent mode on
then it does the following:
silent mode on
system, media, incoming call, notification volume all go to 0
when i unplug or go outside of the time window it says silent mode off and reverts back to my original volumes.
2. location based sound settings
when i leave my house it turns wifi off and all sounds up. when i get to work it turns wifi on and all my volumes to half so i dont blast people while in a meeting.
3. paging
at work we use sms as a pager. when u send something to ur att txt email address it comes through as 410 something something. so whenever i see a 410 number, it turns all volumes up, plays and repeats a sound 3 times, then puts the phone back in the state it was. i.e. if at night silent (see item 1) and if during the day whatever location based profile i was in.
basically, tasker is bad ass. it has a big learning curve. i am a programmer so conditional based logic comes more natural.
Very stable here.First time using it, there is definitely a learning curve but out it's quite logical and obviously powerful.
Used it on my Captivate and now on the SGSII, absolutely no problems. I just use it for turning on my Wifi when I'm at home, turning auto-rotate on when I turn on my browser and turning GPS on when I open up maps.
Tasker has been stable on every device I've used it on, including this one. It just may be my best paid app. Expensive (in comparison to other apps) and complex with a learning curve, but the immense functionality and potential make it worth it.
logic ?

Bla Bla, if it all came so natural you should set the phone to silence mode instead of setting all volumes to 0, its more logical.

Things id like to change

Maybe there are fixes for my issues. As I am new to android I'm not sure how to get them corrected. Here's a list. Maybe someone can land a hand.
How to keep screen on while on a charger.
How to make the GPS turn on and off when app starts and finishes.
How to set so it can detect a known wifi source, then activate wifi.
How to get the long lasting battery results everyone seems to be getting.
How to set the email app to open to the emails versus the screen to select which account to view as I have multiple accounts set up.
How to keep the lockscreen front turning off 3 seconds after I hit the wake button but not swiping to unlock.
That's about it for now. I come from an iphone ecosystem and am used to a few features my JB iphone provides. I'm sure ill have more "how to" questions.
Thank you all for the responses!

Depends on what email app you are using. Also, click the little icon in your notification dropdown. Brings you to the mail just received
How to keep the lockscreen front turning off 3 seconds after I hit the wake button but not swiping to unlock.
dunno... doesn't bother me. It takes me less than 3 seconds to come to a decision on what the hell I want to do

There's an amazing app called Tasker that will do a lot of your wish list. It's all about contexts - e.g. "on external power" "App {x} is in the foreground." It's the best ~$6 you'll ever spend, and never want to have another phone with out it. Almost all of it's awesome functions work without root, too.

How to make the GPS turn on and off when app starts and finishes.
>Android only turns it on when something is using it, so if you see that little icon on a lot of the time there may be something running in the background that you might not intend. This may also be the cause of your battery drain. Press and hold the home button (you will see your recently launched tasks) and hit task manager. You can then clear many unnecessary tasks that may be running in the background. If you don't see the obvious culprit there, you may have to dig deeper...

You can easily make a profile while connected to your wifi check for "state: wifi near (toggle wifi), turn wifi on. You can set it to run when you unlock your screen, for instance. Once you get more advanced you can try to do it yourself (then XDA is your friend). I have played with my wife's iPhone, and you will appreciate that the Market has apps that can do MUCH more cool stuff, and the vast majority are free because they were made by enthusiasts. The rest are usually reasonably priced. Once you root your phone there are many more options.

As to you wanting the lockscreen to stay on longer, there are several lockscreen replacements you could use. I'm not sure which ones have the option besides widgetlocker though. With widgetlocker, you can set the lockscreen timeout to various durations. I know it worked on my infuse, not sure about the note though.
The downside is that it costs a couple bucks and it will drain your battery a bit if I remember correctly because it keeps the device in a wakelock and does not allow deep sleep. Its not a huge battery drain, but it does some. However, if the timeout is more important than a tiny amount of battery drain, I suggest doing that.

I have noticed an improvement using JD and that's actual not placebo. I get your point though on an app that runs to save battery. But whatever its doing, its working better than whatever I'm doing without it.

I bought it when I was on eclair... it made a difference there... though not much
However froyo up... android does a better job on its own...
Think about it... running a program that is on all the time to "save" battery?

How to keep screen on while on a charger.
>It can be done, there are apps to do it, depending on what you want your screen to display. For instance, on my old phone I used "Gentle Alarm" to display a digital clock image while in a hotel or something. However the screen on this phone is apparently prone to having images burn in...
How to set so it can detect a known wifi source, then activate wifi.
>This is a funny question if you think about it, because how could it detect a known wifi source without wifi on? I use Tasker, too. You can easily make a profile while connected to your wifi check for "state: wifi near (toggle wifi), turn wifi on. You can set it to run when you unlock your screen, for instance. You can also set it up to turn on your screen based on location, but remember that if you use GPS too much...
Tasker is fun to play with anyway.
How to get the long lasting battery results everyone seems to be getting.
>You can try an app called Juice Defender, or similar. It has many battery saving features, including the ability to turn on wifi only when available. Its another fun app to play with, but most people here would agree that you should stay away from task killers.
How to set the email app to open to the emails versus the screen to select which account to view as I have multiple accounts set up.

How to keep the lockscreen front turning off 3 seconds after I hit the wake button but not swiping to unlock.
>No idea, but there are apps to disable the lockscreen if you want. I'm sure you can change the setting somehow, but probably at the root level. Search XDA...
That's about it for now. I come from an iphone ecosystem and am used to a few features my JB iphone provides. I'm sure ill have more "how to" questions.
>Easiest way to do stuff is just to keep searching the Market to see if somebody has made an app to do it (Android Market is your friend).
These phones quickly become a full time hobby. I hardly ever play games anymore, I just spend my free time tinkering...

[Q] GPS Data Collection?!

Hi, I'm new here, but I figure my question is as good as any other. I recently became proud owner of the Xperia Neo MT15, which is now rooted and thoroughly protected, but I noticed something about the GPS and Network Location that bothers me - each time I enable either one, it asks me to agree to anonymous data collection.. Well, I don't agree, and I see no reason why I should be denied the features, because of my belief. So my question is this - does anyone know which system apk controls this? I would really like to impose it some restrictions using Pdroid as to stop the data collection. Any input is appreciated, thanks.

Nope. Not the culprit, since I don't even have it. I do however notice a lot of calls for Network Location from com.sonyericsson.learningclient(which sounds logical) and devicemonitor(which sounds just suspicious). They start actively operating as soon as I enable GPS. I've disabled the access to most things for both and set GPS and Network Location data to be served as random. I don't think there are any other moles.
It's weird, because they both sound so harmless, when I look at their descriptions in the list you linked to. Maybe there's something else. I'll see if I can find anything.
Sony has a particular feeling to collect data .
Soon you will discover also that the sony Gps will not works without data at all, because is affected by a bug, and it drops every 5 minutes if you don't have data enabled.

Holy... why did I ever buy a SE in the first place?! I love the brand, and I've loved every phone I've had/used (those include K750, K850, P1i). I'll try to see if I have the 5 min. bug.
EDIT: I'm not sure if i observed the behavior or not. I didn't go anywhere, but stayed on the window with the GPS and nav software on. The software never displayed a loss of connection. I did notice the GPS icon went to it's unfixed state twice for a split second, 5 minutes apart, but I guess I'm supposed to be on the move to notice the issue. All the while learningclient would call for GPS location and be fed random data. The wifi and data connections were both disabled. I'm going for a drive, I'll test and report back.

Hm, you don't have it? You deleted it? I just run a search trough my phone and found a lot of files with idd in their names. Some are even in etc/security and in system/lib there is even one in framework
there's even one folder data/idd who also have output folder. It stores some files in there but can't figure out what trigger loging.
Hm there are also some iddd lib

Hm interesting, on link above, it says it "learns user typed words for default keyboard". I just opened up dex file from that app, looks like that app is for alot of things based on some strings in side of it.

I don't remember deleting IddAgent. The other two I track using PDroid. I just enable its notifications for everything and I watch what does what. learningagent seems very keen on getting GPS location, while it's on, and device monitor calls network location every once in a while, I see no good reason why.
If you are able to unlock your bootloader, and install a custom kernel like inteks, or nightelf ones (void guarantee), question about collecting data while you enable gps just dissapear. I dont know if there is a easier way.
If I wanted to throw away my warranty, I would have done it the day I bought it. I know a custom Rom would solve the issue, but I don't want to risk it with the warranty, not yet anyway.
