How to install custom ROM? - XPERIA X10 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I know there are tutorials on how to do this stuff, but I don't understand some steps, can someone list the steps like every one of them for me including backup which is really important to me, and also what to do after I flash the rom

Could have asked on whichever tutorial thread you've read, as it would be easier than having to rehash the same thing on a new thread.
Root your phone, install xRecovery, install rom with xRecovery, use rom.

Ya I know that but it doesn't tell me about backing it up and restoring after a flash

Your contacts should be backed up anyway, your apps can be done with Titanium Backup or AppBrain, and anything on your SD is unaffected anyway so you don't need to back it before, but should have one anyway.

Thanks man, one love!! Now imma flash your eminence LOL don't think I'm annoying, I do all this for your themes man.

Rom manager major problem!

Long story short: I soft bricked and went back to stock.
Rooted phone.
Then on rom manager I pressed flash clockwork.
Then selected vibrant. That's where the problem is.
It says error occured when downloading and that's it.
I'm stuck on stock how can I make this work or will it work if someone gives me their update.zip?
Also if that works can someone give me their update.zip?
This is the first time I've had this problem and I haven't heard any similar problems so that's why I'm asking.
Thanks in advance.
Delete update.zip, Uninstall/reinstall cwm and try again on wifi

Nope still same problem.
Look in one of the other threads for the zip file and flash like normal

oh... thanks master, your my favorite user here.
a Developer with so much time.... i love you.

Amon Ra????

Can anyone do the Amon RA for Vibrant??? My bro have the evo 4g and he told me is better than Tom manager...
its a great recovery, but rom manager does everything we need, and does it well.
hit up amon on twitter, but I doubt he will do it.....
What's wrong with Clockwork?
It's because I don't know how to delete a kernel with the clockworkmod and mybro told me he can do it with amonra... you know how to do it without use Odin to revert to stock the phone???

+1,
just flash a new kernel on top using SGS kernel flasher, its super easy.
Also, SGS Kernel Flasher can do a backup of current kernel, in case you want to go back after flashing a new one!
Amon_Ra is great (my N1) but CWMR is an awesome recovery...no need to go trying to fix what isn't broken.
I know that, I just want to delete it without flash another one...

im confused, why would you want to delete your kernel without flashing a new one. your phone would not boot....
One of us is really confused....guessing its not me
Really dumb to delete a kernel...wtf has happened to these forums?
I'd actually enjoy amon RA also, but cwm serves its purpose well...

Every Rom comes with a kernel, if you flash another one and you don't like it, you can't go back, you need to flash another one to change it... that's the point I'm talking about...

That's what you're supposed to do...or use sgs kernel flasher and backup the current before you flash...
you're confused man...what rom are you on?
Recovery is part of the kernel from what I remember. There isn't a seperate partition for it. Delete kernel u delete recovery. CWMR boots off SD if I'm not mistaken. I forget these things after 2days of parties XP

Is this guy trolling us? He's trying to delete a kernel and not flash another one? Thats like taking an engine out of a car... and not replacing it....

Can somebody upload GingerStreak 2.3 nandroid backup? Really appreciated!
thx in advance
I could just send you my passwords, email, contacts and anything else you want off of it in a nearly bundled package. Would that be easier?

Roms

I have meanrom v. 0.6, do I have to install v.0.7 or any other before installing v. 1.0 ??

Nope, you can wipe cache/dalvik and flash 1.0.
And the rom wipes the caches upon flash so you don't even really need to do that, but its a good habit to get into.

If you look on the mean rom thread, the developer of that rom has an installation posted for how to install each update. It also helps to ask questions in that thread, because you get a lot of users of that rom to answer questions like this, and it is a good community. I hope I have helped.
Figure this will be a good place to ask my question. how to i backup my launcher/layout if i want to wipe before flashing?

Little off topic but... I know you can use 'MyBackup Root' to backup your homescreens. Not something I make a habit of doing but it does work. You'll have to re add your widgets but it will restore most everything else.

You can back it up in titanium backup. It is a free app in the play store. Just back up [DESKTOP] HTC sense. If you are using a third party launcher then back up the app in titanium back up.

If you're flashing mean rom on top, all you need to do is dirty flash (no wiping) and all your apps, setup and even launcher/layout will be the same

if i may ask, why should i not make a habit of this. i just don't want to re-configure all of my launcher settings/layout.

You don't have to.just don't wipe and flash over itself. You won't lose anything

Flashing back cm7 from cm10. Is it safe?

So I've been reading through the forums in search of this answer but I've been unable to find a definite one. I want to try epinters cm10 but if I don't like it, is it safe to flash back neutrinos cm7 using CWM recovery? Will I brick my phone by doing this?
Thanks!
Sent from my MB860 using xda app-developers app
The answer to your question is yes. But the best way to return is by restoring the nandroid backup you will create before trying CM10 (or any other ROM). No brick fears unless you try to flash an sbf (which you should never do).

Thank you so much for the quick response.
Before I flashed cm7, I made a back up of my stock. Same applies if I wanted to flash back to stock using the nandroid backup, correct? Sorry, I just want to clarify completely before doing anything.
Thanks again!

You only have to backup your current rom if you think you might want to go back.
Always backup before installing new roms, or making any major changes, or even when you have your current rom set up perfectly. Using rom manager makes it easier because you can name them whatever you want. You can never have too many backups!

Awesome man. Thanks for all the advice. Downloaded rom manager and renamed all my backups with their proper tags.
Going to give Epinters CM10 a go.

+1 This
For all the lazy kids out there, always create a Nandroid before going to any new ROM.
It's only one extra step, and it beats flashing with a SBF and "hoping" for the best...
