[Q] TG01 or LG Optimus One - TG01 General

OK, so i have an LG optimus one, and i can trade it for a TG01. Is it worth it? Going from android to WM, and from capacitive to resistive?
But TG01 has 1gb procesor, and a 4.1 inch screen vs the 3.2 screen on the LG.

Ouch!
What a question mate!
a) 1gz processor - worth trading
b) 4.1 inch screen - worth trading
c) light weight - worth trading
d) sleeker design - worth trading
e) thinnest 1gz processor phone (I've known) - worth trading
f) multitasking - worth trading
g) toughness - I have dropped it at least 14 times (am counting yes!) not a single scratch or damage - worth trading
h) customization (oh yes!) - I will die if I can't customize and tweak my phone - worth trading
BUT
It's windows 6.5 or 6.5.5 (using one of the custom roms) - Windows 7 is out already. Are you ready to trade for an OS which might not be supported at all in few months? Windows 6.5 is already down sized to few pages on Microsoft website.
HOWEVER, XDA itself is a huge Microsoft replacement where you can keep TG01alive definitely, without Microsoft's support.
Android - not a complete OS according to me. It's still in development, but so is every other OS out there.
Resistive screen - I LOVE it - only reason being, I can possible take any object around me and get tapping on the screen, but with capacitive - you will kill it!
The list will keep going on and on and on ..especially when more users show their input. The main question is - Economically is it what you can afford? What will you use for phone for?
Have a look on the polls in my signature, you will see what 'we' use our TG01s for

i use my phone for talking, cheating on examns, games...internet...gps from time to time...but the only thing im afraid is that resistive screen,i tap with my fingers mostly ; and wm wich i never used before

its up too you. imho, i find the resustive screen alright, but sometimes when i switch from my Orange San Francisco, or ipod, i forget and have to tap my tg01 screen much harder!
My friend has a lg optimus. the screen sensitivity is alright. i wouldn't say it is the best capacitive screen, so if you switch to the TG01 there won't be too much noticable difference

lol @ cheating on exams. The TG01s snapdragon should help in that for internet purposes. I have tried both resistive and capacitive and even though i own a TG01 (whose resistive screen isnt bad at all), i prefer capacitive screens. In the games dept. i would think that android has more support for it.
and a quick advantage list-
TG01-
-Snapdragon processor (1ghz vs 600mhz)
-4.1 inch screen (definitely the best from all the wm ive seen )
-WVGA(480x800) vs HVGA(320x480)
[email protected] (vs VGA @18fps)
-9.9mm thin (vs 13.3mm thin, but the optimus one is less wide and tall)
-True multitasking(while i believe android stops the app where you were, which is not as bad as it sounds)
Optimus One-
-double the RAM (512 vs 256)
-3.5mm jack built in (usually tg01 comes with adapter, but having a jack is just that much better)
-capactive screen (usually an advantage)
-a not dead OS thats (officially from GSMarena)2.3 upgradeable and seemingly more XDA support (from what i see we have a few ROM makers and android development is on hiatus atm)
-i would assume that this has better battery life (bigger battery 1500 vs 1000 mah, use the start menu mod for the tg01 if you want your phone to last half a day at least)
thats all i can think of right now. plus compared to android, imho windows mobile wont be as easy to get into right away as android, but its not too bad.

Yeah it does look nice. the only con I can see from the specs is the 64MB SDRAM. It should have been loaded with a 128MB and it will be the godzilla of all ATOMS hehehe
some little add-ons left by MWg that was not integrated with the atom v
* a standard 3.5mm jack would be nice as well
* where's the IR? no more novII remote hehehe
Very nice...love that it has gps!
Seems it will be released in feb...I'll be getting one then
and its quite cheap! AU$839. htc touch cruise will be $1159!
Looks like it is QVGA (320x240)
thinks the Zinc II is nicer...
It be great if CPU up to 624Mhz and 1GB ROM like Atom Life and plus 128MB Ram
Love that camera is 3M Pixel
Don't know why they put gprs onto it but not increase cpu speed/ storage for big gps apps/ RAM for fast cache
Is it 520Mhz cpu perform faster or better than Atom Life??
Although i like the look of Atom Exec than Life or V
In my though
It will perfectly for me if
- CPU Better than or Equal 624MHz
- RAM >= 128MB
- ROM >= 512MB
- OS >= WM6
- GPS built in
- Camera >= 3MP (Better if 4MP or 5 MP) with better Zoom function
- Better Speaker than current Atom
- Less power comsumption (Conflict with CPU Speed) or Greater Battery
- LCD more than 2.8"
- Better HeadSet and can use with 3rd Party stereo earphone with FM enable through it
- Better Bluetooth Stack for Better music via bluetooth stereo with FM enable through it
I'm greedy ..... he he he
hehe, I like your suggestions! Also needs:
- 640x480 resolution screen
- Infared (only so I can use novii remote)

I have said I won't buy any other Atom, just look at the popularity of AtomExec and its supports that we are getting.
You sure want to go there again?
MWG stated, that the new devices are from Arima and Gigabyte and they don't longer have a partnership with Quanta and Asustek.

had an 02 Atom for 20 months now and very happy with except the IR cover fell out... kept 02 ROM updates and has been stable with very little resets (could go many months with one). As with anything that becomes popular (aka iPod) there are going to be issues. Believe they really need to get their service game in order and hopefully MWg is more than a name change and fix that ... but they are coming out with some good looking/spec devices... Zinc II, Orbit II (HTC Touch Cruise) Atom V etc... because of my experience would consider but understand others may not .... we can only base on our own experience and mine is yes would go there again

Not going to argue with you. One of my friend is very happy running with his Windows 2000 and couldn't get him moved to XP even with a gun pointing at his head. Different strokes for different folks. But, being a Computer Junkie, I can guess what majority of the people like or dislike in gadgets and very seldom err.
AtomExec is very sexy, I paid HKD5,900 for it so you can estimate the time frame. Mind you that I already had an Dopod 818, an Treo650 and an O2 xda (818pro). The logic of wanting an AtomExec is like wanting a hole in my head. Tat tells you I am an early adapter and don't mind to pay for something I like. Its screen is smaller and darker screen than I would like. But the built quality and size is perfect for my taste. I also bought a custom high capacity battery and a nice leather case for it. However, AtomExec freezes quite bit, not fast enough even with 520Mhz because I have to hang another language platform in it to use in China. The company hardly put out any updates. If they had responded to any question, the answer was usually "No' or "We have not planned for it." or similar. I am fairly sure non-geek phone users will go for iPhone. Geeks will go for HTC's more advance phones. Of course there will be some left for Atom's family.
My Kaiser has 3 meg pixel camera which can take a picture of a business card and put the name, phone numbers .... , company name into the contact book directly. When I am lost, I turn on its GPS and walk 10 Meters and I know whether I am on the right track. I have the entire China map in it. It supports 8G microSD card and I put hours of MP3 in it. Its bluetooth support stereo.
Scrolling command dial, many hardware buttons, screen is bright, response is quick, good size storage memory. Qualcom 400Mhz CPU has dual-core, an ARM9 and ARM6 built-in. Plus, important for some folks, ton's of fans keep making it to have better and better features or looks.
Yes, there is something I don't like about it. It does not have an infrared port. Integrated mini plug does not allow charging and listening music at the same time while sitting at a desk (need to get a 3rd party adapter RMB25) and I don't need the sliding keyboard.
-------------------
There are only two guys, wonderful people in AtomExec circle who dedicated their time putting out two near-final WM6 ROM's but all other HTC phones have more ROM's than you want to count.
Again, if Atom V has the Kaiser hardware, I won't mind go for it immediately. But with its middle of the road hardware and past customers supporting records, unless its price are low enough, I would wait...
It is just my 2 cents, I respect your feeling toward your Atom!

For a confessed tecno person a liitle bit upset you are trading in old currency and such a low denomination like your opinon should be worth at least a 1930's penny's value also like new technology...
if the atom v comes in at $835 (as have seen) it is cheap with the specs as i paid $1200 AUD for the original atom ... but will upgrade after seeing the short list of Atom V, the zinc II & touch cruise but from there who knows... might be happy like your mate in 5 years saying .. nah, why upgrade it does all i want it to do ... then you can roll your eyes at our buying for needs mentality and say get with the program ...

palah, everyone has his own opinion, but most of what jychan28 said is right. I am an O2 Atom user since Atom. However, O2 has a lousy after sales service. I am stuck up with Atom Exec at the moment (cause I spent my last cent on it ) and now waiting for good times to change this to an HTC device most probably Tytn-II or Touch Cruise and good riddance from O2.

Agree 100%... like yours my williness to buy again was based on own experience so after two good (not perfect) 02 products so will consider another... if i had your experience would more than likely feel similar... but also be aware HTC, 02, MWg, Nokia etc etc all produce dogs every now and then...
although the aotmV so beautiful ,i do not change the exec until it die~hehe
I would say yes, it is a downgrade in terms of speed and rom size on the Atrom V, but what about the hi-price paid for HTC devices. Also you can always expand it using sd cards, and personally i never like choking up the internal memory.
There are reviews on the Atom V already. And a video review on the 3D/Video performance.
If you ask me after watching the video, I'd rather trust the Atom V over the Touch Cruise.

What phone would you ditch the Titan for?

In looking at the latest offerings from phones, I am curious what people (who own a titan) would upgrade for?
The Touch Pro is the upgrade for the 6800/Mogul. But, It's not that great of an upgrade at this time because know the Touch Pro 2 is on it's way by end of year.
So would wait for the Touch Pro 2, or would you gamble and see if we have an Touch HD2 with keyboard?
My concern is that the new HTC (and it has to be HTC....XDA forums is what adds value to the phones when carries don't) devices are not leaps and bounds upgrades. No 3d acceleration is a big thing as we round the corner on new device OSes.
The Qualcommm procs at 528mhz seem too slow, so I hope HTC has some mid year suprises for us.
Well with verizon it doesnt matter what phone it is, they somehow screw things up and get things a year after the fact, but, I cant believe Im saying this, if the PalmPre comes to VZW and gets video recording...might look there.
If a Touch HD 2 is coming out, it's a ways off. The Touch Pro 2 was just announced. HTC doesn't announce phones often. The original Touch Pro was announced almost a year ago
im digging the samsung omnia by verizon..
i have sprint now..
but with the family plan and data plans (2) it would be $176 a month.... screw that... im at $85 a month now...
http://www.verizonwireless.com/b2c/...t&action=viewPhoneDetail&selectedPhoneId=4366
I would totally ditch my phone for an HTC Touch Pro2. That thing looks so sexy and anything has to have more memory than the Titan. If only there was a way to add more to it.
Touch Pro is close but it has mediocre battery life.
The TP2 has an odd sized screen that would lead to compatibility issues.
Right now, Nothing. The Xv6800 does pretty much everything for now. They might get smaller, more memory or maybe a little faster but, it's not a major change.
The current phone, tho is low on the memory scale, does GPS, all WM features, even newest builds of WM 6.5.... I find no need to sign a 2 year contract and not get any really new features in a phone...
When WM 7 devices start showing up (muti-touch, more like iphone feature set), then I will start looking for a new phone...
but, that is just my 2 cents....
David,
I think I am with you on this. The "upgrades" of the Touch Pro and the Touch Pro 2 are not compelling enough to spend 5 bills on, or sign a new contract over.
If only the Titan had more memory, I'd be fine with it. It drives me crazy using Opera or the new IE with all of the low memory issues.
Also there is a good point about the screen size. The current titan is QVGA, and there are many other devices using QVGA. The Diamond/TP are VGA. The new Diamond2/TP2 are WVGA.
So will WVGA be the new "standard" resolution apps are written toward? Will VGA fade quickly because there are not that many phones that have it today, and may not have many with WVGA coming down the route.
If someone could offer a legit upgrade to 128+ megs of memory for the Titan for a reasonable price, I think they could make some serious cash to tide people over.
A Titan with 256MB ram and a new processor. I just realized how much I love the form factor and have come to terms with it's thickness (though I'd prefer thinner), and I am in love with the hardware buttons which make me say that.
But I will likely get a vogue soon because my titan's power button is broken (detached from the main board) and I'm having charging issues. I might replace the xv6800 but verizon has discontinued it and the vogue is free. It's also thinner and I don't know how I'll get over the keyobard and the wifi, but my xv6800 might become my wifi device since I don't need an internet connection constantly, and my 6800 would probably work when I do.
However, I think the touch Pro 2 looks really nice. It has a better keyboard and bigger screen-which I have wanted, but I really would having that ok button. But with the bigger screen it might not matter that much. I want the touch pro 2 to be the iPhone...really.
No one makes the phone I want, no one ever will I think (though the Blackstone and TP2 are close), but I also want iPhone software and a capacitive screen. So if my 6800 didn't have problems I might be lusting a bit over the touch pro and of course the touch pro 2, but the titan should just be given the TP's internals!
I like the 1Ghz Toshiba phone . . . not sure if it will be offered CDMA. I'm locked into VZW with family plan. I'm up for free2 in August, so I'm excited about all the new handsets coming out. I just hope VZW lives up to their promise of open architecture hardware and brings some of the better ones to their customers.

256mb ? What do we live in the dark ages ? What would you really want on a phone ?
I'd think at least 2-3gb to start with for memory. Files these days are big, and with all the multi-media features they support I would think we should start seeing phones with much larger memory built in, personaly I kind of expect it on my next phone.
I got my 6800 when my 6700 died for the 3rd time (thank god for insurance), so not under a contract here. My 6800 does almost everything most of us need as of now.
Come on WM 7, get here with some cool azz phones !!!!!!

I dont have that long to wait.... I WANT IT NOW..
plus it is probably like when the cd rom first came out..
they released the 1x but had the 52x designed and made..
1x then few weeks later 2x then 3x to 4x to 8x, 16x etc..... all in the name of making money....
There is nothing out now that makes me want to upgrade. The TP is great but has even poorer battery life than the Titan. The Omnia is on VZW and would cost me almost 2x what I'm paying now per month. I'm also about fed up with WM in general, the promise that the next version will fix the performance issues and improve and simplify the interface has become old. I like what WM can do, but it requires way too much attention and 3nd party software to do it. I'm interested in what the Pre will bring and what Android will become. I'm a bit disappointed in Androids progress though, it's much slower than I thought. If I stay with WM, I will wait for the TP2 at least. This is of course predicated on the continued life of my Mogul.
I jumped for a sprint touch pro (on verizon) and have to say it was worth paying ~$400 off ebay to have the device. It is faster, more stable and a huge step up from my titan. I had to send it back to get the usb port fixed and it is almost painful to go back to my titan. I love my titan, don't get me wrong, but the Touch Pro was worth the upgrade in my opinion.
Not saying I wont run out and get the TP2 or HD when its available!
There aren't really any phones out now that interest me enough to replace my XV. I love my xv, it's the best phone I've ever used. Sure it has its quirks and needs a soft reset every now and then, but I can live with that.
The TP is a great device no doubt, but I can't get over the lack of hardware buttons. I use my "OK" and "Messaging" and "Start" button all the time. The TP just isn't better enough to warrant changing devices. Also, VZW has a neutered version, which bugs me.
That being said, what would make me upgrade? It will take a WM7 device with significantly better hardware or possibly a new Android device. Sorry G1, T-Mo sucks and I don't like your hardware. And as cheap as RAM and flash memory is, I expect the next generation of devices to have at least 512 of RAM.
Touch Pro 2 .. but I would still keep the Titan to play with
as the new phones has just about everything .. not much fun..

It is also important to note that more memory (memory = RAM; storage = ROM) means lower battery life. Sure, memory may be cheap, but battery tech hardly ever changes and battery life is a large complaint about current gen devices as is.

My next phone is going to be an Android, screen larger than 4.3inch, has at least 1ghz, and a da*n good GPS antenna
If the HTC Evo 4G arrives in europe, then I want that one!
Or a HTC HD7 if it will have Sense UI.
But for now, my HD2 will be with me for the coming 1 or 2 year(s)
i've not actually thought about it as for the first time ever im actually in no rush to upgrade my phone. i'll see whats about in a years time and go for the best at the time.......
Everything about that phone is a step backwards from the HD2.
Lets see.....
Who wins
CPU: (HD2 - 1ghz) > (Windroid - 624mhz)
Screen: (HD2 - 4.3") > (Windroid - 3.2")
Resolution: (HD2 - 800x480) > (Windroid 400x240)
Camera: (HD2 - 5mp) > (Windroid - 2mp)
Video: (HD2 - 640x480 30fps) > (Windroid - 320x240 10fps)
Thickness: (HD2 - 11mm) > (Windroid - 14mm)
WinMo: (HD2 - v6.5) = (Windroid - v6.5)
Android: (HD2 - Froyo) > (Windroid - Donut)
RAM: (HD2 - 576mb) > (Windroid - 128mb)
ROM: (HD2 - 1024mb) > (Windroid - 82mb)
SD Max: (HD2 - 32gb) > (Windroid - 16gb)
Battery: (HD2 - 1240mah) > (Windroid - 1200mah)
Other: (HD2 - Proximity sensor, G-sensor, Light sensor) > (Windroid - ???)
Damn... did I miss anything?
I'm still not sure which one would be better though...

Oh wait.. they do both run winmo 6.5 so... yea...
Dell Streak is my personal choice - that's the next port of call for me for sure! More or less the same specs as HD2, but the differentiating factor....a huge 5" screen, plus a dedicated camera button & running Android Froyo 2.2 now. I've had my HD2 for exactly 1 year now so it's time for a change.
It's all about the screen real-estate for me really, now that we have reached this current height in convergence of handheld devices. I don't really see many revolutionary technological advancements in devices happening in the next 6months, although Samsung will be releasing a dual-core mobile chip next year which may bring about a new wave of innovations & accompanying devices from all the smartphone manufacturers in the race to dominate the handheld market.
But my guess is that will probably only happen at least 12months from now - just in time for another upgrade . Meanwhile we have to keep ourselves entertained somehow and I'm hoping the Dell will do just that for me in the interim!
that dell looks amazing, but god dam at 220g its a lot heavier then the hd2,
right now with WinMo and Android on the phone HD2 is still at the top of its game and even if i would buy a new phone such as the desire HD i would actually be loosing value as it cant run win mo and i need that to connect to an open enterprise network
next phone will be that has a higher processor and hopefully a slightly larger screen

I think 60g more won't pose too much of a problem (even for a shorty like me ) - it's more the size of the Dell that I'm a bit anxious about. I say anxious, because I've just ordered it, for better or for worse. Like I mentioned in my previous post: it's time for a change!
The thing with the HD2 is that despite the novelty of having both Android & Windows on one device, the Android ports to date are still too buggy & problematic for serious use. Hence I found myself booting back to Windows frequently. However, Windows still hangs regularly which was my primary reason for wanting Android (...I know there are other good reasons too).
So if the Dell can bring me stability, then that alone is a justified upgrade from the HD2 in my book already. The larger screen, 32gig SD, new/different interface, etc are just added bonuses. A rock stable phone plus Internet tablet rolled into one ...surely that's a worthy upgrade in anybody's book?!
I'm getting a a nice fat cheque off insurance company for my damaged HD2....so i'm gonna get the desire...I only ever ran Android on the HD2....winmo is fu**ingc crap!!

Admittedly, the Desire HD certainly has Android going for it, but it's just too similar to the HD2 in some respects (also have Android on my HD2 at the moment), that I fear it may not spark the excitement that I expect when upgrading my kit. It's like changing your car, but buying the same model & colour as you just had - just feels kind of... like nothing's changed.
The Streak on the other hand is a completely different beast to the HD2, and should keep me entertained (for better or for worse) for quite some time before I become bored wrestling with it - after all, we're XDA members here, not your ordinary end-user who justs wants a device that fulfills a practical function and that's it. For us it's as much about the technology & the tinkering, as it is about the essential utility of the device.
Don't get me wrong tho, I think the Desire HD looks to be one helluva desirable piece of kit, but just not for a current HD2 owner. But that's just my personal opinion, others may see it differently....
Ooh lots of feelings coming out.
I should have been more specific when stating a "natural step". I was referring to the dual boot. Before you say it I know that function is available for the HD2, but this is apparently designed into the phone. Which is, as pointed out, a heap of .... so I take that point head on.
Incidentally, I'm eyeing up the Desire HD as my (wifes) next phone.
Still waiting on WP7 to be commercially available before considering it.
This starts me thinkin'....
[Dreaming on]
My next phone will be a v8 5 Liter turbo charged model with 8-core processor 16Gig memory, 1 Tb onboard storage, Wifi, Bluetooth 3.0, GPS (militairy grade accuracy), all fitted into a segway able of runnig 150 mph, fitting in a small suitcase.......... and weighing just over 200g (excl fuel) and running 700 miles /liter of ultra high grade fuel (priced at $2 a liter)
[Dreaming off]
Now that would take care of:
Battery problems, transport problems, localisation and connectivity problems
and kill the occasional elephant
For me this would be the ideal next phone..........
let me know how you get on with the weight of it, or the size!the hd2 is just about perfect size for a phone IMO
Well I plan to keep my HD2 for a couple of years and who knows what tech we will have then. Imagine, now you can play PS1 games on your WinMo phone at 50 FPS, smooth, nice and responsive. PS2 games after ~5 years? PS3 after ~15?
Damn...

Why No Qwerty Phones for 2012?!?!?

Big Rant here... we're almost at half time this year, and there is NO QWERTY PHONES in sight!!! What the f**?
I'm using the Sprint Epic 4G, which is what I would consider to be the 2nd best QWERTY phone (1GHz A8 CPU, PowerVR 540 @ 200MHz) even though it is 2 years old.
Only the Droid 3/4 beats it, and that is based on 2011 technology, and spec wise they are not much of an upgrade (Dual Core 1+GHz CPU, Power 540 @ 300 Mhz), with only the addition of another core, but the GPU is identical except for the clock speed.
And what's in store for 2012? I can't find any news QWERTY phones. I want to upgrade both CPU and GPU, so at least a Quad Core A8 or Dual Core A9, with a GPU on par at least with the Samsung GS2 Mali-400. The only news I've heard of is the Motorola Photon, but there has been nothing concrete since the initial rumours!
Yeah, it's a shame. I guess there isn't nearly as much demands these days for a qwerty phone, or the OEMs are just obsessed on super sizing the phone's screen now. I doubt the Photon will have a keyboard too.
It's not so much that there is not a demand. It's more of a general feel the corporate big wigs have from not being in touch. They're so into making the screens bigger, they're not actually taking certain things into account. Like that some people don't want something the size of a tablet, as a phone. Or just because the screen is larger doesn't mean we don't want a physical Keyboard. I for one am not a fan of the virtual KB. Fat Fingers, and a virtual KB. Not a good combination. Not to mention the virtual KB ets up a good portion of the screen anyway. If they keep this up, those that do have real keyboards won't be able to keep the damm things in stock. IMO it's split about 50/50 those that want a Virtual KB, and those that want a real KB. I would suggest to the manufacturers to give us the Physical KB, and find a way to keep the thickness of the device to a minimum. That would work better in their favor.

Agreed, phone manufacturers these days just want to make the phone as slim as possible. Reviewers love it that a phone is 1mm slimmer than a competitor, rather than sacrificing that a bit in order to pack some actual functionality... A keyboard just doesn't have the same wow-factor than a big shiny phone, unfortunately.
The stupidity of the masses (especially the iSheep crowd) in my opinion is probably to blame. Touch screen only phones are functionally useless especially when you want to get any work done. Try manipulating a spreadsheet in landscape mode... almost the entire screen estate is eaten up by the virtual keyboard!
I say this from experience having gone from HTC Hermes (has KB) to Omnia 2 (no KB) and now Epic 4G (has KB). I've also learnt of HTC recent defection from keyboard phones... and this touch-only and slimness obsessiveness is getting out of control.
Some rumours says that there will be a Xperia phone with QWERTY keyboard this year...

I for my self can say i use to love the keyboard but got so use to on screen keyboard that when i use a keyboard its so hard to adapt (at least for me) back to it like on my droid pro i find my self using the virtual keyboard instead of the fisical one

Qwerty's don't sell nearly as well. In addition, manufacturers don't want to spend the additional $$ needed to produce a device variant that also has a keyboard. Not sure why they don't offer them and just charge more for them....probably once again they simply don't sell the numbers required to make the same profit as producing full touch screen phones.
Phones are getting bigger and most don't want a brick in their pocket. You are unfortunately the minority.
The people that are used to them should squash the habit and dive into virtual keyboards. The selection is much greater. Most keyboarded devices are sub par in comparison to modern day super phones. And things don't seem to be changing anytime soon. The Droid 4 has a beautiful keyboard. Probably the best on the market. But the device itself is horrible. Not sure which I hated more, the screen or blur. Probably a combination of both. It comes down to economics. When you add a keyboard, the hardware suffers. The manufacturers have budgets to keep within.
The people with sausage fingers, hopefully will at least have the option to get the biggest screen device on the market to help compensate.
Adapt or be unhappy with every device you buy.

Probably because no one really shows interest in them. Android enjoys a good screen size, adding a keyboard hurts that a bit(IE: Evo 4G Slider or w/e it was).
It seems all of the new phones this year have super large screens and no keyboards. I already have a tablet, the point of a phone is to be portable, anything over about 4.3" seems like overkill. My Droid 3 may be a little thicker due to its keyboard but the other 2 dimensions I care more about when holding it. I held a friend's Droid RAZR and it felt a little too big for a phone and its only 4.3".
For just typing words, Swype can be faster than physical keyboards, but for typing symbols and having arrow keys a physical keyboard can be nicer.
Keyboards are slowly becoming a thing of the past..imo with phones coming
out with massive screens, manufacturers wont want to add to the bulk with a physical keyboard.

Wow really :what: "
Adapt or be unhappy with every device you buy " . " The people that are used to them should squash the habit and dive into virtual keyboards " . this the same kind of thinking that says everyone should own a Prius. because they're good for the enviroment. Reality is they're not. It takes forever to recoup the enviromental impact damage from producing one. Also it's called choice, I don't want a virtual KB. As for the statement " When you add a keyboard, the hardware suffers " . I'd say your off on that one. Example the EVO Shift. The manufacturers listen to the people. But if we're all lemmings, then we get what they give and smile.

Adding the KB affects the size a bit. But that's more of a manufacturers choice than anything else. But it's still worth the trade off IMO to have the KB.

I for one am not a fan of virtual keyboards. I may be naive but I think that the keyboard makes a phone look distasteful, but that's my biased opinion.
Nevertheless, lets be honest here. Virtual keyboards are no longer very popular and even the company that was most famous for its creation of Qwerty phones has moved into the path of full touch (Blackberry). That's not to say that there will NEVER be a Qwerty phone coming out (Black berry has confirmed that they will still continue designing new Qwerty phones) but it will most definitely not be flooding the market like other full touch screen phones are.
I have the xperia pro now, but already I'm looking to see what is coming next.
It really surprises me that there are now no QWERTY phones out this year, this is a worrying trend.
For those who say "use the on screen keyboard and shut up", trying using one with your eyes closed, not so easy to use now is it, no right then, that is why I need a physical keyboard, because on screen ones are too small and I can not see or feel what letters I am typing.
I do realise however that this is becoming rather a niche market, so I guess fewer and fewer suppliers will be releasing phones with this facility.
Its a shame Motorolla didn't release a GSM version of its Droid 4, a trick missed I feel.
Well at this rate, when my contract expires, it seems I'll be looking at a Blackberry or going back to a 'feature' phone, sad days
Well, physical keyboards add weight, volume, and cost to the phone. The slide-out function also introduces at least two more potential points of failure (the sliding mechanism itself, and the connecting data ribbon), which means more time and money has to be spent on QA.
I think the net result of all this is that for a keyboard phone to be technologically and structurally competitive, the price skews high, and it looks like there's just not enough relative demand for that feature. If manufacturers try to make a cutting edge, high-priced keyboard phone, they run the risk of having a whole bunch of product (with especially high manufacturing cost) that sits in the warehouse... cell phones don't age well, so that's a scary thought for them.
I'm afraid it's looking like keyboards (as they exist now) are being mitigated to the role of "smart phone training wheels", which means fewer and fewer high-end offerings down the road.
Just my (somewhat depressing) 2 cents.

Your telling me that the on screen keyboard is too small? Try a Galaxy Note, If your telling me you can not see what letters you are typing you seriously need an eye examination.

If the world were split 50/50 over a hardware keyboard Apple wouldn't hold such a large market share, considering they offer zero phones with physical keyboards... just saying. Your estimate might just be really far off base...

Why would you close your eyes & type? Nevertheless, if you can't see the letters, go see an optician.

[Q] htc hd2 vs titan

Hi, i have a htc hd2(now with android) and i want to buy a titan. I had wp7 on my hd2, and i like it very much.
What should i do, keep my hd2 or buy a titan?
I replaced my HD2 with a Titan and I'm not sorry for that - better screen, better camera, better battery and obviously faster.
I also like the looks better but it's maybe a bit too large, 4.5" would be a maximum for me.
However, development wise there is no competition. The Titan got it's 1st custom ROM just yesterday... Moreover, it's not clear yet if the Titan will be upgradeable to WP8 which is expected to be released in Q4 this year. I read somewhere that MS will give an answer this month when WP8 will be presented for the first time.
So, if I where you I would wait this month . IF the Titan's future looks assured AND you get it for a good price then yes. This way you may keep it for a year or so and then upgrade to a next generation WP. IF NOT, I would just wait some more and get a WP8 device later this year.

I keep hearing people doubt that Titan will get WP8...
It has been confirmed, doubted, and confirmed again: Titan and most other devices WILL be upgradeable to 8.
If they go back on their word come release day, with HSPL we'll get WP8 anyway.
There is no reason to not buy the Titan I.
The only bad thing about the Titan is the capacitive buttons. Capacitive buttons are retarded. You will accidentally press back or search while in the middle of a video no matter how hard you try to avoid the damn things. Moreover, I sometimes can't press the back button using one hand, because reaching over with my thumb presses the right side of the screen which screws with the digitizer (the buttons don't seem to have a multitouch digitizer, why would they? But it can be annoying to have to change my grip...)
Yeah yeah WE GET IT capacitive technology is "cool".... now start making physical buttons again dammit.
thank you guys, I think i will get a htc titan in july
The Titan has a 1.5Ghz processor.
The Acer W500 and MSI Windpad 110W tablets have 1Ghz processors. Both run Windows 8 Release Preview smoothly.
Since Windows Phone 8 will be based on the same core and the PC version, it will run on the Titan very well.
This will be Microsoft's advantage going foward as Win8, Phone8, etc are not bloated OS's like Android and iOS which are laggy on dual and quad-core processors.
Yes, some will complain about comparing an AMD processor to a Qualcomm, the analogy fits.

Hell, the HTC Shift runs 8 @ 800MHz smoothly!
I was torn just like you are and another thing to consider is your HD2 is a T-mobile device and the Titan is AT&T device, so coming from T-mobile to AT&T on you HD2 your signal strength is maxed at EDGE network. That was the final breaking point for me.
I enjoy the titan and really look forward to putting custom ROMs on it, but the HD2 rocked our worlds for so long and is still going strong! I still use my HD2 to stream music off iheartradio with wifi. I refuse to let it go
