Ok let me start off by saying this is only my second smart phone and my first attempt at "modding" one. With that being said I'll continue. Im using a stock US/At&t X10 with 1.6 After reading yesterday that the phone had been successfully rooted I began my quest to have a rooted phone running the latest software. I began by rooting the phone using the superoneclick method, and it seemed to have worked but I really don't know what to do now. How do I upgrade the software? How do I delete all of those unnecessary apps?
Thanks for all of the work you guys put in and any help you can provide me.
start by downloading titanium backup from the market, run it and it should install busybox for you. then look through the forums for the: clean junk apps-xrecovery-jitv2 optimise. search for, also forums, best apps for x10. I was also 1.6 err and att errrr lol. plus just do a lot of reading on these forums, they know what they doing for sure!!
Thanks. Ya I been reading in this fourm all day and felt like my head was going to explode, so i decided just to ask some questions. I tried installing xrecovery which required busybox but when I click install in busybox it says im not nand unlocked or they were unable to remount. Should I just try titanium backup?
yes get titanium backup then from within it it will try and download busybox, this will just debrand the 1.6 you have learn that then explore possibilities with 2.1 after you read a few, its not that tough but as far as flashing etc it could be tricky.
K I tried titanium and it failed to install busybox from within. Also how do I go about upgrading my OS?

1.Download 2.1 X10a generic global firmware
2. Download latest version of X10 Flash
(both from the Android Development section)
and follow the instructions in the X10Flash thread and you should be good
When I try to install busybox it says im either, not nand unlocked, or its unable to mount. How do I see if im nand unlocked, and if im not how do I do it? Thanks.
Have you re-booted your phone since root?

Hi all
I have a G2 touch that was stock and got the OTA update to 2.1 (t-mobile). But i decided I wanted root, not for developing just to get rid of a few system apps like stock and peep.
so i followed a few guides read lots of things and ended up having the generic htc rom 1.5 and rooted after making a gold card and downgrading. The problem was the OTA upgrade to 2.1 wouldnt install. (no groans from those that know what they are on about i'm new to this and thought it would upgrade )
as i like 2.1 more i ended up reflashing the stock 1.5 htc rom without having root and the OTA upgrade worked fine.
Now ive played with the generic htc 2.1 i actually prefer the t-mobile rom as it seems to have more in it like g-sensor calibration etc.
ive read several pages on here and other forums and now im just confused as to how to get a rooted version of the t-mobile 2.1 rom.
is it even possible?
if not and i do the full gold card and downgrade procedure again Which ROM will give me rooted 2.1 that is the closest to the t-mobile stock so i can remove the stock apps i want rid of?
sorry if it seems like an obvious question but i really dont get all this kernel, radio flashing, kitchens and all of that stuff i just want a simple rom i can put in and everything works like normal except i have root
thanks for your help

I'm not aware of any T-Mobile 2.1 ROMs, as everyone wants to rid their phone of branding normally.
But... here's the best method for you. Install your old official 1.5 ROM, and then do the OTA update to 2.1. Make sure you install your T-Mobile 1.5 to do this.
Then, go to http://www.villainrom.co.uk/viewtopic.php?f=110&t=2096 and follow that guide to get a custom recovery image onto your phone. From there, you can use adb to access your handset as root, and add and remove stuff as you please. ADB info is in that guide, and a guide to removing apps is at http://www.villainrom.co.uk/viewtopic.php?f=46&t=862
HTH
PS. This won't give you everyday root, for things like root apps, since your ROM won't itself be rooted. But if you look up "Superuser.apk" and push that to /system/app (you'll learn about pushing etc with adb or googling 'adb push'), along with the su binary, you can give yourself basic root, though it won't be perfect.
If anyone else wants to help out, what you'll need is the 2 superuser files i mentioned, and a modified boot image that has the changed hero.prop (i think it's called that), with ro.secure set to 0 in the ramdisk.
But don't worry about this later stuff unless you need to.
Hi thanks very much for the help
i get the idea right up until the basic root bit, so think i will get that far .....after that you lost me
will i be able to use apps for rooted devices if i just get the basic root working?

Should be able to. Give it a go That last bit wasn't intended for you, more for anyone who tries this in future and wants adb root access.
i've managed to hit another problem....
i'm trying to install the adb drivers and having trouble. i have the normal usb drivers installed and have downloaded the drivers from villanrom (it wont let me post the link sorry)
but when i tell it to install them i get a window pop up saying the driver contains no information for my device.
ive uninstalled the my htc drivers and tried again but i never get an adb device appear.
am i missing something obvious?
im using windows xp and have the hero set to pc sync when connected.
thanks

Hmm OK. I know the issue. Find the driver folder, and use this file as the ini file

I am here today because I need help. I want to root for 1st time ever, but I have a Mac. I hear about all of the great things I can do with my Vibrant after rooting but I am scared of trying this without a PC. Can anyone lead me in the right direction? Also lead me to the best roms. Thank you.
Well my first suggestion would be to get a PC
But seriously, you could always get a copy of XP somewhere (pretty easy to get for free), or a later Windows OS and dual-boot your system.
Or you could just dl Ryanza's lag fix from the market and root it that way.
You do not need a pc.
Download the file to your phone, put it on the root sdcard/ and go into stock recovery and flash it.
Afterwards, get rom manager and make a backup.
Flash a rom, bionix or eugene's
This is all in the general section sticky I made. EVERYTHING you need is there.

Take a look at this post. I would recommend you pull the latest version, su-2.3.6.1-ef-signed.zip, from this thread instead of "SGH-959 Root Update.zip" from the 1st link.

I have taken your advice but my phone has only installed the Superuser app. I am scared that if I do anything else I will brick my phone. Is there a way to unroot it? I would like to try rooting again with the non PC version. Thank you
Download rom manager
Flash clockwork recovery
make a nandroid backup.
Now you have something you can always revert to.

Yes sir, that's exactly what you should have after successfully completing the process. To unroot from your device take a look here. View the Full thread (Page 1) to perform via adb. I don't see any reason you need to worry yourself about bricking. Unless your planning on testing kernels, ROMs, etc... If that's the case, make sure you read the entire thread before you make any decisions, and ask questions as it seems that most everyone here is willing to lend a hand.
search ryanza on market place. download the free version you can root and unroot from there simple instructions very easy to understand.
download rom manager (it auto installs superuser also) from market place also free download. that will allow you to make backups and restore should you encounter any problems.
also if your running OSX you can dual boot from Bootcamp windows, and if your running atleast a core 2 duo system you can dual boot windows 7/Vista 64bit.
A pc is needed for almost no modification when it comes to this phone.
I had to put effort into bricking my phone so you should be fine, just make sure if you have installed the OTA that any themes you install support the JI6 update. thats the only way i bricked my phone lol, and again that was a easy fix. Read read read so much to learn.
Thank you everyone for your help. I have succesfully rooted my phone. I think I will wait for the 2.2 OTA update since I hear that they are slowing coming around for the galaxy S phones. I want to try the bionix rom but I do not want to install it to soon and miss out on my chance to get the OTA update.
Hi, i am new in this forum so I may be like the noob you guys talked about in the first video, also i am not american so sorry for my english.
Yesterday i decided to play around with my phone, an optimus one with official rom froyo. I rooted it and then unrooted it because i realized that the official gingerbread room was out. After a few unsuccesful attempts of updating it from kdz (emergency mode, unplugged, took off battery, almost crying for my phone) when I turned it on it was okay, running gingerbread 2.3.3
I downloaded the rom from this website http://androidve.com/2011/05/como-instalar-software-original-en-lg-optimus-one-kdz-oficial-digitel-en-exclusiva/ and I thought everything was fine until the moment i realized that it wasn't what i expected. I wanted to install this rom because of a video I saw in youtube and i followed the link and it took me http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=946354. I read the thread and some of its post and decided that i want that rom.
Now, i have gingerbread and i know it can be rooted in a way i dont know anything about, i want to learn it. But my question is... If i already have gingerbread, do i need to downgrade to froyo to install the cROM of mik? or can i do it directly from a rooted gingerbread? if it is possible, can you please guide me on how to do it or give me a tutorial? I already looked for them and actually found some of them but because of the incidente of the last day i am scared of trying this stuff alone and i would really aprreciate your advice.
Thank you. (Sorry for the essay :S)
There are already threads on how to do this. Also if you are to flash mik's rom then you have to flash old baseband since you have official gingy.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1142105
After rooting to install a custom rom download rom manager from the market, choose rom from sd card, then choose backup rom and wipe data and cache. Then flash all neccessary zips you need after install.

thanks for answering.
In adb (this means in cdm/total commander mentioned in Link 1 at "How to Use ADB"):
adb devices
adb shell
echo 1 > /data/local/lge_adb.conf
After that open SuperOneClick and root using pneuter. Reboot phone and update Superuser from Market.

Ill follow that, but where can i get superoneclick and pneuter?
I am guessing that to flash is to install, how do i do that? like an app from the sd?

Super1 click:

Psneuter is just the method process to root(select in super1 click)
To flash things go to rom manager and choose flash clockworkmod recovery. After that any thing you need to flash can be done easily in recovery.

Put zip on sdcard then go to rom manager and select boot into recovery
In recovery select install zip from sdcard, select the baseband fix and choose yes to install.

Man almost everyone on this site is rooted.... im just to scared of bricking my phone!
I was scared too, but after a few near-brick experiences i decided to give it a try. I even decided to go back to gingerbread with root because i wasnt able to call and all that stuff, and i was really freaked out when i was looking for a way to go back because my questions was not completely answered and i felt insecure. So i decided to give up for a while and then i realized i had made a backup from my ''gingy'' with the rom manager, and i thought it would restore my data and all that stuff but it actually took me back to gingerbread which was a relief for me.
Now that infiniterisen gave me the answer to my signal/service issue, i might try to do it again, because even though i was really scared while checking that i had no service, my android looked really cool and was smooth as baby skin
I cannot tell you to try to root it because if something goes wrong you would be completely free to blame me and because i am also new to this scene, but it is really cool and i personally like to try new stuff (even though i may cry if my O1 gets bircked)
Have an Xperia X10 with Android 2.1. Wanted to root my phone to upgrade to gingerbread. However i admit i got confused with the plethora of links and pages and 6 hours later i have a phone that only has "Sony Ericsson" written on it.
Here's how i started - based on DoomLord's instructions i installed Flashtool (from here) . HOwever I was unable to find xrecovery folders in the log messages.
Followed step by step procedure but realised that each time i upgraded the kernel, phone seemed to be going into some bootloop.
I realised that this may be due to my phone running on Android 2.1
SO i moved to another thread . Downloaded these files with the hope that they would work.
meanwhile was also following video through a similar page that was detailing the methods for installing custom ROMs. The reason i followed another source is only because the intsructions on all these pages seemed very confusing.
i believe i may have misled myself by following two different procedures here or the files i downloaded were incorrect.
After I upgraded the kernel as per doomlord's instructions, i went into xRecovery and formatted the data folders. I had already copied the ROM files provided by Doomlord in this thread onto my SD card under a new folder. However, xRecovery was asking for .Zip files while there were .7z .
Tl;dr - formatted data on xRecovery and did not have the correct updated files. phone is not functioning now
Tragically so, I am now left with an Xperia that only seems to be displaying the words "Sony Ericsson". I wish to learn from this experience but hope its not at the cost of a good phone!
Would the experts believe that this phone can be un-bricked now???
your phone is not bricked so dont worry. just make sure you have the newest flashtool. dont upgrade the kernel if you are staying on 2.1. if youhavent downgaded the kernel then do so. if it doesnt work, just download your baseband and firmware you want. as for rooting on 2.1, you can use super one click. for 2.3, you hav to use the flashtool
If you are on 2.1, then you don't have to go through all the downgrade/upgrade hassel.
Just turn on debugging and use flashtool/superoneclick to root.

Wow... such a relief to know that. Was exasperated and down-beat to even look at my phone.
please help me in identifying the right version of softwares and protocols to follow. In the current state, i connected my phone and flashed it once using flash tool but there has been no progress. Am i missing out a few steps?
How do i upgrade to 2.3 eventually?
Thanks a lot for the support and motivation
ok if you want to go to 2.3 download the firmware from here

Reading this from office now. Shall check in a few hours once i'm back home.
Hi guys, it has been awhile since i rooted my neo, with a guide I believe I found here.
I'm currently on version 2.3.4 with root and would like to update to ICS or higher if possible.
Now I've tried to do an OTA update but it restarted my phone with the announcement that it couldn't upgrade to version 4.0.2.A.0.62 (luckily not bricked)
So now I have a few questions regarding this. I have the superuser app on my neo(MT15i) and i found 2 options which may or may not work. These are "temp unroot" and "ota survival". I haven't used these options, afraid of bricking my phone.
All in all, anyone know the correct way of updating my phone?
thank you for your time, reading this
Ether update your phone with PC Companion or Sony update service, and root it after.
Or you can flash one of the ftf's with flashtool and root it after. These you can find in sticky thread in general section.

Thank you for your reply. I already tried via the PC companion and after an hour or so, it still didn't do anything.
As for the other solution, I will try this as soon as possible. If I understand it correctly, if I update my phone succesfully, I automatically lose root? And afterwards I should root it again?

Yes. Clean install wipes your phone. So make backup.
Only in some cases when it's small update(ie. not changing android version) PCC or SEUS leave data partition intact. But in that case you can click repair option in PCC or flash it with SEUS(SUS) and your data will be wiped. Which is what I suggest as it's always good to have clean phone when you get different android version.

No error at all, it seemed to be stuck at preparing the phone for the update, furtheron there was no sign it was actually doing anything in the background.
And i made a backup of everything on my phone with the app backup master. Or do you suggest another/better application?

I found this post by you, I could use the same procedure to update my phone right?
small edit: both your dropbox link and 4shared link are down
Use whichever app you want, if it backuped what you wanted then it's ok. I personally use MyPhoneExplorer as I only need sms, contacts and notes/tasks(from calendar). Don't know how MPE goes with apps, you can use titanium backup for apps.
That is old tutorial with links to old android 4.0.3( build .562), but it still works(4shared is not down, as I tested it now).
That's why I wrote, in above reply, to check sticky thread in general section. So no need to look around.
p.s. read a note in that (sticky) thread, make backup of your CDF customization number. OR simply update it with PCC(I guess you caught it on a bad day, usually it works ok) or SUS.
