Can't receive phone calls. Just shows up in missed call log. No ringing.
An answer would be easier to obtain with more information.
Sent from my Eris using XDA App
It would be very helpful if you would consolidate all your issues into one of your post, as they may be connected, and included more information. Usually the basics needed are atleast which ROM you are using, what changes have been recently made, and a detailed description of the problem.
I put vanilla cynogen mod rom on. And now it wont get calls when. Someone. Calls me it just shows up as missed call in call log.
I'm not trying to be an asshole, but I would just like to impress upon you how perfectly useless you have been to yourself. Vanilla Cyanogen Mod ROM, really, which one, there is no "official" CM for Eris, so which port are you using. If it's showing up in your missed call log, the call reached your phone, missed calls due to no service, airplane mode, phone shut off or any reason except they were simply not answered, do not show up in the missed call log. If it's in the call log you can almost certainly receive calls, your notifications may not be working. Have someone call the phone while you are watching it, if the display does not indicate an incoming call then you do have a novel problem. Try this and please report.
Sorry for the lack of knowledge on this I'm just having alot of problems with it and don't know where to start. My friend introduced me to rooting n different Rome on his phone n said to try it out. So sorry. I tried someone calling me and no display of them calling then I checked call log when they hung up n it showed a missed call. If that. Helps any.
I have modle. Number- froshedyo. Android version-2.2.1. Kernel version-2.6.29-decafuctcfs-dirty-c6271491. Mod version-froshedyo-6.2-rci-desierc. Build number-frf91
If that helps
lol "if that helps," dude that exactly what you've been asked for in each of your threads, I'll do some tinkering, see if I can find you a way to get Amon-RA Recovery without too much hassle, that can help resolve most of your issues I've read about. I'll post back later tonight.
Alright! Thank you so much. I know I'm a retard.
BTW what method did you use to root the phone, a direct link to the tutorial or the name of the app, whatever you used, please.

Well, before I get too far into this, One Click Root (jcase's I presume) installs Amon RA Recovery, RomManager doesn't actually install ClockWorkMod Recovery, it's a sort of one time run overtop of Amon, try booting into recovery directly.
Turn the phone completely off, Press and Hold the VolumeUP key while Pressing and Holding the Power/EndCall button. Alternatively, with the phone on Press Power/EndCall, chose reboot, recovery, ok.
If you have a menu with several options in green text that you highlight with the trackball you are in Amon, and this will be easy.
Yup it's in green using trackball.
Outstanding, read this first post very carefully and follow it step by step, if you want to try FroShedYo again, make sure to re-read this first post entirely. The reason you did not have market was because you did not flash this file. If you want to start over completely from stock you may also use bftbo's FlashBack21
While you are in Amon Recovery, connect your phone to the computer with the USB/Charging cable, select the "USB-MS toggle" option in Amon, press the trackball. On your computer find the phone, transfer whatever ROM you wish to flash to the SD Card, do not place it in any folders. Follow step by step the instructions here. If you are flashing FroShedYo, (or any CM ROM that requires a gapps flash) after you Flash the ROM, but before you reboot, flash gapps.
Make sure you understand all of the instructions before you do anything, if something is unclear feel free to ask.
Alot of this stuff can get overwhelming if your new to it, I bricked the first phone I rooted because I wasn't paying attention, but be cautious, and be sure you understand anything new you want to do to your phone.

BTW this is based on the assumption that you "flashed" ClockWork Mod Recovery from RomManager, both Recoveries use this same styling. The procedures are also very similar for both, as long as you have a custom recovery you should be able to fix this. Amon is "preferable" for the reasons bftbo brought up in another of your threads. To definitively tell which Recovery you are using look for white lettering on the bottom of the screen,
Amon-RA Recvoery - Build : RA-eris-v*.*.*
ROM Manager - ClockworkMod Recovery v*.*.*.*
It says build : eris-v***
Did you have any luck reflashing the ROM with a full wipe?

Apologies for butting in.
Amon_RA should look like this: http://i756.photobucket.com/albums/xx209/erisuser1/Amon_RA_stuff/Main_Menu.jpg
FWIW, there is a mini-tutorial with lots of pictures (of the Amon_RA menus) in this post on AF
Now, back to the regularly scheduled programming.
Yeah, I googled and couldn't find anywhere a build : eris-v*** So I'm kinda banking on a bit of oversight or a typo. That pic is very handy, much more specific than "menu with several options in green text" lol
Thanks bftbo
Yes did everything u wrote n put gapp. In n flashed all n seems to be working awesome. Thank you so much. If I have any issues then I will repost. Thanks again

does anyone have the step by step instructions on how to flash this onto your phone? There are so many threads i dont know where to start. I rooted my phone but have never used a rom before. I also want to make sure I have it running as best as possible.
Thanks in advance to whoever can lend a hand.
get - rom manager app, free or paid doesn't matter.
click the first option on rom manager, flash clockwork recovery, and chose Galaxy S Vibrant
download the nero v5 to your sd card
use rom manager and click download rom from SD and then choose the .zip wherever you put it.
then it'll ask to backup current rom, and clear/wipe data.
check the clear and wipe data, but not the current rom, if you want you can, but just check the second one no matter what.
it will reboot, and go into regular recovery, or it'll start downloading rom, if it starts saying clear data and stuff, its good.
if its on screen with blue text, click reinstall packages, now it'll reboot, in the same screen
click reinstall packages again.
now it'll be on a green text screen.
it won't do anything here since you had to reboot, so now click install from sd card
and then choose and find file.
then click yes, you navigate the recovery with volume buttons, and power, volume up is up, down is down, power button is OK/select
then the same thing will happen.
REMEMBER, THE FIRST REBOOT WILL TAKE A WHILE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
AND IF YOU HEAR SOME VOICES, THATS GOOD TOO, IT MEANS ITS ENABLING VOODOO LAGFIX.
DO NOT REBOOT IF THE FIRST BOOT TAKES ABOUT 10 MINUTES, IF IT TAKES LIKE 20, THEN YEAH YOU GOTTA WORRY, BUT ABOUT 10 IS GOOD.

This thread will tell you everything you need to know. You have to be diligent to get this stuff. read it. re read it. then try it out. at least figure out how to back everything up and you don't have to worry about a thing. I also had a lot of trouble and a miserable time learning all of this. if you have any questions post them here or send me a message and i'll try to help you out.
Thanks... I am new so I appreciate the help, and dont know why someone would come into a thread clearly asking for help just to be rude. I'm not that worried about bricking it. I get my hands on a lot of phones. I've got three of these so I want to try to mod one so I can give the other 2 to my brothers. I'm using a Windows Phone right now so if i fail then i guess that's that for now...
Thanks again..
I am attempting to return a phone to stock. Currently it has froyo on it which my brother installed (he's not here so I can't really have him undo it). This version of froyo is screwed up and I can't activate the phone with it on. I'm afraid of words like wipe the phone. Holding down the volume button and the send button doesn't do anything. It just reboots with froyo on it and I am then in the same situation as before. So it must be a firmware issue. My question is what do I need to do to set the phone back to stock. I found a forum on here that described how to do it kind of but it wasn't nearly simple enough for me and assumed you knew what things were, namely Amon_RA 1.6.2 and an SDK. Despite describing itself as a noob forum So if someone could take me through this assuming you were telling someone who has never done anything like this before that would be great. I am so frustrated by all this. I don't need a million apps but having a phone that I can text, call people, and use the internet on would be great. At that point I'm satisfied to leave it alone.
with the phone off: press and hold VOL DOWN + END CALL (red).
Does the phone do anything when you do that?
Have you read this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=792026 from start to finish?
Yes I did read that one. However, I don't understand what I'm doing. What is amon_ra? What am I installing it to? My phone or my computer. Yeah I've done what you suggested with the hold down the volume thing. That didn't do anything. I understand about installing the zip file on a micro sd and putting it in the phone however I don't understand much else. I'm trying really hard to figure it out myself but not having much luck pretty much I'm looking for step by step instructions for someone who hasn't even modded a phone before.
I answered a similar question here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=12171234#post12171234
My post in that thread will point you to a thread that has a walk-through of how to install a custom ROM after you have rooted. The custom ROM in the first thread (also the one referenced above) will have the effect of unrooting the phone and returning to stock when you flash it using the instructions in the thread at androidforums.com.
Which is the best rom to go with?
I've downloaded _n0p_'s DSC v0.7 and Tenorntex's Longhorn 2.1 v2, seeing as these 2 were the newest and latest and had Android 2.3.3
Are there any other better rom's or has anyone tried the 2 I listed, if so whats the difference?
Thanks
Better is very vague when it comes to ROM's it all depends on what you want in a Rom. I have old Simple Streak 1.2. Yes there is newer ROM's out but this one works perfect for what I need. In my Case Stability.
DSC is the most actively developed/supported. Plenty stable for me. I don't think any of the earlier Froyo based ROMs are being developed further.
I meant as far as Stability, Performance and up to date, I don't care about the Stage UI and was gunna theme it myself or use SPB Shell 3D.
Could someone point me in the direction to an easy install rom?
I don't wanna install "these update pkg's" after renaming and then plug my phone into the pc and open cmd and then type this in on the pc. et cetera et cetera
I just wanna download a zip drag it to the card, bootup in safemode and install from sd card.
I'd consider doing all that work if I weren't testing out the device.
I won it off ebay, the guy replaced the screen and said it's been randomly rebooting ever since. But he never did a factory reset or new rom install ever since fixing the screen, so I just wanna simply install a rom and see if it works then go on from there.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Unfortunately I do not believe that anyone can change the way that the Streak works just so it is more convenient for you or so that you don't have to learn anything.
In the time you took to navigate to XDA and make your post you could have flashed a ROM onto your Streak - plugging it in and everything.
The only ROM you can install by just putting it on the SD Card is the same one that is currently on the Streak, if you don't mind holding down a couple of buttons and using recovery mode.

If anyone is wondering why developers leave and give the site a bad reputation look no further. Someone with over 600 posts under his username should not be making noob posts like this one. With so many posts he knows how to use the search engine and the wiki, but I guess when it comes to our device using the search engine and the wiki is an inconvenience, along with renaming a file "update.pkg".

Some people learn better through interaction where they can actually ask questions... I don't have over 600 posts so who are you talking about? Furthermore if you are talking about first thing I'd do is learn how to read mr wise guy, secondly!! You tell me how one is supposed to learn which rom is the best based on user reviews and opinions, where do I go to find that out and wheres the wiki on that, unless you expect people to read 200 and 300 page threads also? I have barely 150 posts and rarely post at all unless it is to ask questions or make requests. It's not like I have 600 posts and every single one of them are questions.
This is only my second time dealing with android and second time flashing android first time it was simply moving a zip to the sdcard and booting up into safe mode and selecting update through sdcard, so certainly I'd be baffled and have questions when one time it was so easy and the second time I've gotta jump through hoops and everything.
Lastly since WHEN Is asking a Question SOOOO wrong in the Dell Streak 5 Q&A Category???? It's not like I posted it in the wrong area or something, but ohhh no'es how dare n00b be confused and need a lil help/guidance of some experienced users, ohh mercy me the drama in that!!
Last time I checked that is what XDA is here for, for people to learn, not to be attacked by asshat trolls like you.
If anyone is wondering why XDA has a multitude more lurkers than posters look no further than to the hardass that is Strephon Alkhalikoi View Postwho can't stand to see a n00b in need of help!

Flashing/Updating
Installing a recovery
Download appropriate recovery to flash from Stock Recoveries or Custom recoveries
Enter fastboot mode on your phone
Flash recovery with fastboot: fastboot flash recovery <path to recovery.img>
After flashing is complete: fastboot reboot to reboot
Finished
If you are using a custom recovery see Disabling recovery overwrite in stock roms and follow the steps there to prevent the Streak from over writing the recovery. Re-install your custom recovery after following those steps.

I hope that you can actually read better than that. The wiki does not say to stay away from fastboot. It clearly states two commands that should not be used on the Streak. It goes onto give a number of examples of using fastboot.
I hope that you other 157 posts (as I wtite this) on XDA were not as tiresome or ill-informed as the ones you have posted here.
The information you need is here in the forums, available at the links in my signature, and on other forums. Please exercise some patience and read the info.

Reinstalling a stock rom will wipe all data!
1. Download stock rom pkg and recovery to install
2. Copy pkg to sdcard and rename to update.pkg
3. Install matching stock recovery
4. Enter recovery mode

Do I need the recovery.img as well? It said nothing about a img file or anything just said "matching stock recovery" so yea, is that the right thing?

First I'm gunna try factory reset and see if that fixes the random reboot problem, hopefully it does the seller said he just installed the new screen and never did anything except for just trying to powering it up, use normally and it would reboot suddenly.
WELL NO DUH, you need to restore everything back to default settings with a factory/hard reset. Thats like trying to install a video card or webcam and expecting it to work right away without installing the dirvers. - Hopefully!
Well it's only getting as far as the dell logo screen/splash screen. I've tried the entering safe mode but nothing yet, once it's powered on it just sits at that screen.
dsc is great and very stable if you dont mind the few following quirks.
1. google maps will always run in the background unless you freeze it. This will drain your battery quite quickly
2. Wifi might or might not be broken, if it is broken use wifi analyzer if not profit
the benefits of dsc?
fast
running GB instead of froyo
dpi change is awesome.
screen default orientation is awesome
stable other than those few bugs
Battery life was decent.
-------------
Im however just running 2.2 froyo on a stock rogers. The battery life is amazing on stock 2.2 (a whole day, and still have about 30% with heavy usage and constant 3g) and the wifi works fine. For me this is the most stable rom however it is a bit slow compared to DSC. This phone is used for work so it has to just.. work.
---------------
Havent really tried the other roms yet, but depending on what you want out of the phone you can try the DSC and see if you can live with these little quirks.
Yea I was leaning more towards DSC than Longhorn, it looks like it's updated more frequently too.
Bad & Good News
Turns out when the guy replaced the screen he fried the mobo... Me and a friend at a small local pc store tried everything from rooting with new rom to factory resets. Always had the same problem.
But the guy at the pc store sells phones also and said he'd give me $100.00 credit to a new factory refirbed, rooted and unlocked dell streak mini if I gave him the one we tried to repair.
Hi. I'm still too new to post in the Dev forum.
If Th3Bill happens to see this, I've been having issues with his ROMs since they've been using Aroma.
I was on CWM but changed to TWRP. That didn't help.
I've tried PA & CNA. Both don't install the extra programs and usually I can't get past the setup screen. I just get a black screen. If I pull the battery and reboot, it starts and the screen goes black instead of lock screen. I hear emails or messages notifications but can't do anything.
Anyone with ideas?

You should probably post in his thread for the ROM you're having issues with. He's more likely to answer that way.
Thanks but I can't.
The forum keeps telling me that I don't have enough posts to do anything in the Dev forum.
Did you wipe before starting aroma? If so, don't. Also using cwm recovery you need to go to advanced>show error>save log>reboot recovery. Twrp doesn't have that option. I was only able to install cna after going back to cwm from twrp then the above steps. Hth

I had this same issue with the latest PA. I had a black screen, but was somehow taken to the play store, where my apps were downloading/updating. So it seemed to be only the launcher that wasn't working. I also rebooted without success. Then I booted into recovery and wiped cache and dalvik and fixed permissions, rebooted -and it worked!

Try my rom Androbreadcrumbs, I also used the aroma installer and it worse flawlessly whether you do wipe or dont before, it does everything for you. See if that works, I personally tested the entire installation from beginning to end for 2 weeks in development before posting it online so there are no bugs with the installer whatsover, if you still have issues after using my installer, then scream at me in PM, i'll help you out
P.S. Th3Bill also doesn't have an atrix and has a photon himself so he cannot test everything for our phones but he gets most of the things on point as he handle the MIUI builds for 12 different devices I believe, not to mention the other half-dozen ports that he does of other roms to other phones. So he has a lot on his plate to deal with, but if you can get a logcat off your phone using "adb logcat" and dump it into a .txt file so you can send it to him, you can still shoot him a PM with it and more than likely he will work with you to help out with whatever the issue is, he'll work with you if you help him to help you by providing such things as a logcat and full details on your configuration in Aroma & which choices you chose and what the problem is that you're experiencing. Remember, always goto the horse's mouth before going to the horse's ass and making an entire thread about something like this. For all you know, shooting him a proper PM could've resolved your problem faster than making a thread about it. Just saying pal, not trying to be an a**hole.
I believe its posted somewhere that you must fix permissions after flashing.
Sent from my MB860 using xda premium
Never heard of that, the updater-script should set all the required permissions for you. The whole idea behind using aroma is to make the user not have to do anything but choose whichever options he\she may want to install and thats it. The rest should be handled by aroma config script and updater-script so the user has to do nothing more than reboot after installation and enjoy the experience. I've done extensive research on the edify syntax script writing for the updater script and the syntax for connecting the aroma-config file installer script and have never read anything about setting permissions afterwards anywhere after using aroma.
But feel free to read up yourself and perhaps I may have missed something somewhere. These thread should point you in the right direction.

I believe wiping beforehand won't bug out an installation, but merely be a redundant step, since the installer will perform a wipe anyway.
Thanks for all your comments.
My intention is to post in the proper thread but I cannot yet. (as I stated originally) I also didn't want to bother him yet with PMs. I'll take some of your suggestions and see what I can figure out.
Thanks for taking the time to post your thoughts.
Hey, if you downloaded his rom then by all means you can shoot him a PM asking for a suggestion on what you should do. If your intention was to post in the right section, then making this thread in the Development section is a big no no and is the reason why you cannot post in that section until you atleast have 10 basic posts under your belt so you understand where you can post such topics.
Unless you meant that you were going to post in the thread for which ever rom you downloaded, then thats cool but you don't need to wait to be able to get send the developer a PM to ask a question. We're people too and majority of the developers on here wouldn't mind helping someone out with a problem they're having trying to get their rom working.
Long as you help the developer to help you by providing something that can be looked at like a logcat log for example instead of just saying something like "i installed everything, restarted but it gets stuck at the M logo and doesn't boot, help please".
Try running the installation again, after it's finished, reboot the phone and see if it boots again. If it doesn't boot up again, connect the phone to a usb cable to the PC, boot into recovery again, then open up a command prompt and run ADB, check that you can communicate with the phone by typing in "adb devices" and you should see a serial number and the word recovery listed which would be your phone. Then type in
Code:
adb logcat > "logcat.txt"
That will dump the device logcat into the logcat.txt which will be located in the same directory as where you are running adb.exe from, then post it up here for people to take a look at and see what's failing

I did end up PMing him and I'll follow your steps to get the logcat to him. My intention was to post my issue in the thread for the specific ROM I got the error with. I was not trying to open a new random post with my issue in the Dev forum. I've been around forums enough to know that would be a big no-no.
Thank you again.
Well then, now that you put it like that, I can respect that. Some people come on here aimlessly and post garbage or truly stupid questions in the development section without using simple common sense to try to find a solution to their issue. Then disappear after the original post and never respond or post anything ever again. Not a big deal but gets annoying after a while as it's completely pointless and all the minutes other people spend reading the dumb posts, can never be regained back.
As you can tell this forum is moderated and kept up clean as well as the section topics are strictly followed when it comes to posting threads. So since you know how the forum thing works, it will only help you gain the most out of being on this one and welcome aboard.
Don't hold back on shooting any developer a PM if there's no other way you can contact him and run into issues using his rom. It's your right if anything to be able to contact the developer when you run into problems that aren't common or can easily be resolved otherwise.
Th3Bill is doesn't have an Atrix himself, he has a Photon. Although most of the things are really similar or identical between the 2 devices, he is not able to physically test the Atrix builds he put out and he relies on people to help him troubleshoot any Atrix builds. So the more info you can bring to him about anything problem you run into with the Atrix, the more detail he has to be able to debug the issue and correct it.
So it's better to raise the issue to his notice so he can look into it and correct it before release the next build which could potentially carry over the bug which would make it even harder to troubleshoot.
Samsung Galaxy (SGH-M819N) MetroPCS Mega
This will take you from the Factory Stock JB 4.2.2 (Rooted) to the Factory Stock KK 4.4.4 (Rooted). This is an "Update" procedure, not a wipe!
The following are the steps for updating your;
Samsung Galaxy (SGH-M819N) MetroPCS Mega
...from Android Jelly Bean v4.2.2 to KitKat v4.4.4
This will update you, without losing your setup & settings.
Very Important! All of this must be done from/on a PC/Laptop that is running Windows (at least XP)!
And you will be using your File Manager to do everything here. There are no "installations". You will be running everything by simply double-clicking on it in your File Manager in Windows.
You may need the appropriate USB Drivers for your device. If your PC/Laptop is not recognizing your Android device, you can try finding them at the following links:
http://rootmyandroid.org/android-usb-drivers-for-all-devices.html
http://developer.android.com/tools/extras/oem-usb.html
The following is the method that worked for me and so I would advise that you follow the steps exactly as they're written. For example, I was using TWRP on my Mega, but when I tried using it to do the Rooting step, it did not work. Yet Philz Recovery did. You can switch back to TWRP afterward, but for now, stick with Philz until you're done with these steps.
Also, as another example, yes, there is a reason for pulling the battery and not letting it reboot in one of the steps and there is also a reason for rebooting it twice when told to do so, so once again, please follow the steps below exactly as they're written and you shouldn't have any problems. But of course, there are no guarantees and as always, "YMMV".
So anyway, here is exactly what I did (I wrote the steps down as I went):
01) Download the following files:
KK Stock: http://samsung-updates.com/device/?id=sgh-m819n
Tools: https://www.dropbox.com/sh/hyc76x6zh6ppxdv/AAB7H8yyEpdKPzi5WfY6US98a?dl=0
You won't need TWRP, but as I said, I included it just in case you wanted to switch to it afterward.
02) Create a temporary folder and place all of the above files into it (unzip the zip file into that same folder).
03) Take the back off of your phone, so that you can easily pull the battery out when the time comes.
04) Power Off your phone, then fire it up into "Download Mode", by pressing the;
Home + Vol-Down + Power
...buttons, all at the same time, until you see the screen come up (you'll know it when you see it) and then release all of the buttons. Then just tap (for a sec) the "Vol-Up" button and it will go into "Download Mode" (it will say it on the screen).
05) Run Odin3 and when it comes up, Plug your phone in via the USB cable that came with it (using a different cable may cause problems). Your phone will show as being connected, because right below the top left box in Odin, it will say "COMx" (x=#).
06) Now click the big "AP" button in Odin (this is what used to be called the "PDA" button) and browse to the file named;
M819NUVUBNI5_M819NTMBBNI5_M819NUVUBNI5_HOME.tar.md5
...highlight the file, then click "Open", to bring it down into the "AP" box in Odin.
07) Now UNcheck both of the small boxes, labeled; "Auto Reboot" & "F. Reset Time".
08) In Odin, at the bottom, toward the right, click the "START" button. In the box on the top left in Odin, you'll see stuff happening. It should note what it's currently processing. For example, for one of the events, it'll say "System", as it's flashing in the System portion of the ROM, etc.. This will take a little while, so be patient.
09) When it's finished, it will say so in that same box. It will say "PASS", or "Finished", or something to that effect. You'll know if there was a problem.
10) When it has finished succesfully, Exit Odin. You'll be running it again, but closing it clears the screens in it, which makes it less confusing (to me, anyway).
11) Now pull the battery out of the phone, wait about 30 seconds, then put it back in.
12) Next, turn the phone on normally and let it boot into the ROM. Obviously, lots of stuff will be happening here, including (before you see your Home Screen come up) the black box that pops up, that says it's installing apps (or something like that) and counts through them.
13) When your phone does come up to your Home Screen, remember, you are NO LONGER ROOTED, so you will see lots of errors from apps that require Root not being able to do their thing!
You may also see lots of "Google Play Services" errors. Do not bother going into the Google Play Store, as it won't work either!
What you need to do now, is to reboot your phone. And when you do, you will see it counting apps again, but with a much lower number of apps to process. It is my belief that it doesn't process what would make up a "GAPPS" package (Google Apps) the first time around, but then it does it on the second reboot, since this time around, all of the Google stuff will work!
14) Once your phone has done the stuff it needs to do to finish booting up, Power Off your phone.
15) Run Odin again.
16) Boot your phone into Download Mode again.
17) Connect your phone using the USB cable and make sure that Odin sees your phone.
18) Click the "AP" button and browse to the file named;
philz_touch_6.25.0-meliusltexx.tar.md5
...highlight it and then click the "Open" button.
19) Make sure to UNcheck both the "Auto Reboot" & "F. Reset Time" boxes. It is very important that you do this, because Android's default behavior when it reboots after the following step, would be to overwrite the Recovery that you're about to Flash, with the Samsung Factory Recovery. That's also why you'll be pulling the battery to shut your phone off.
20) In Odin, click the "START" button. When it's finished, the top left box in Odin should turn green and it will say, "PASS". It may take a couple of minutes, so be patient. If it never turns green and you have waited, it is probably fine. Just move on to the next step. If you have a problem, then repeat the process, starting from Step 15 above.
21) Close Odin and unplug your phone.
22) Boot straight into "Recovery Mode". This is done by pressing and holding the;
Home + Vol-Up + Power
...buttons all at the same time. You will see some lines of text being drawn on the screen a few times, until the phone finally decides to reboot. Keep holding the buttons!
IT IS VERY IMPORTANT that you do not move your fingers away from their positions right now, as you may need to quickly press and hold all three buttons again and you will only have about one second to do it in! If you're unsuccesful, your new Recovery may be overwritten with the Samsung Factory Recovery and you will have to repeat the steps above, all over again!
If it does not boot up to where you see "Recovery" in tiny type at the very top left of your phone's screen, what will happen, is that the phone will shut off again. Release the buttons and your phone will start to fire up again.
AS SOON AS you feel the vibration that your phone does when it's first turned on, press and hold and three buttons again and then you should see it say "Recovery" at the top left ("Recovery Mode", or something to that effect). When you do, you can release the buttons. This may take a few attempts.
23) Once it boots into PhilZ Recovery, perform a backup (if you have an SD Card installed, you probably have more room there and should tell it to back up there).
24) Once the backup is done, you will then want to reboot your phone using PhilZ Menus. Make sure that it is set to check for Root (it will show you that setting) and then when it asks you if you want it to Root your device, make sure that you say "YES". It will then Root your phone and Reboot it!
25) When your device comes up, you will need to go into the Google Play Store and install "SuperSU". Please also support this wonderful, awesome app by purchasing the Pro version key as well! You'll get some more way cool features and besides, what else would you use? After you install SuperSU, make sure you go into it and when you do, it will detect "KNOX" and ask you if you want to disable it. Say "YES"!
Once all of this is done, just Reboot your phone one more time and that's it! You're updated, you're Rooted and you're ready to go!
If you want to install TWRP Recovery now, you can. I included v2.6.3.5, because it' the only version that I could get to work with this device. Just Flash it like you did PhilZ, starting at Step 15 above.
Now all that's left to do, is to check to make sure that all of your apps still work. I had a problem with about a half-dozen of my apps. But all I had to do, was extract the Apk's out of them and run them, reinstalling right over the current installation and every single one of them worked great afterward.
Enjoy and I hope everything goes well for you!
Thank you for the detailed write up. Has anyone tried this after flashing megakat ROM?

You're very welcome! I tried to do it as a "I know nothing, so please tell me how to do this" guide.
As for MegaKat, I have no idea, but usually the rule is, if you're coming from a Custom ROM, you have to backup your apps and data (always a good idea) and then do a Factory Reset/Wipe before installing.
But of course, the way I see it, as long as you're backed up and you'd have to wipe anyway, what do you possibly have to lose by trying it without wiping? If you also have a full NanDroid backup, you can always restore.
I had to the first time when TWRP wouldn't restore my Root. My WiFi didn't work after restoring back to 4.2.2, but since my end goal was to get to 4.4.4 anyway and my Mobile Data worked fine, the temporary glitch was no big deal.
Glad you found the guide and I hope it works as well for you as it did for me!
I now have a file with everything in one Zip file (not a "Recovery install Zip), so that you won't have to visit all those links above in the OP.
Here's the link and any problems just let me know:
https://db.tt/9WcxjUT0
The Steps listed above is exactly what I did. I wrote those Steps from what I did. It took me less that an hour. But don't assume you know what's going to happen next. Please follow them exactly!
I have done it twice on my SGH-M819N (MetroPCS) Mega (I messed my phone up doing something else to it) and I have applied this to 3 other phone with their OEM ROMs and required Recoveries (TWRP, CWM, etc) and was 100% succesful every time, so this methos does work if done correctly!
A big thank you!
Zeuszoos, thank you for writing this guide. I was lost without it. Pleasw keep up the good work. Have a grwat day!

Big Cat,
Okay, I'll try and we'll see if we can get it working for you together.
A couple of "not meant to be insulting" questions;
Were you already Rooted before starting?
Are you running the provided PhilZ?
Did you perform the "ReRoot" step in PhilZ?
If "Yes" to all of the above, did you then install the SuperSU app?
Did you then run SuperSU to make it update its data (choose "Normal")?
If yes, sometimes you have to uninstall/reinstall an app like a root checker to get it to ask for SuperUser permission again, so that it'll work.
TTYL
Yes thank you

Big Cat,
Um, yea, I can help you, but do me a favor and don't do anything until I get back to you, while I arrange some things for you.
There's something that I now know that you do not understand and you're going to be upset when you do. <lol>
I just don't have time to type it all out right this minute.
I'll get back to ya within 24 hours or less. Sit tight.

Big Cat,
Here it is: In order to go to a Custom ROM, you did NOT need to do what you just did. Except for the learning experience, it was a waste of time.
It was also a waste of time, because in order to install ANY Custom ROM, you'll have to perform a "Factory Wipe/Reset", which will wipe all of your data out and start you from initial setup (input account, etc).
This is why I said to "sit tight".
You didn't have to do that with this one, because it was direct from Samsung and you already had a Samsung Factory ROM installed.
There is an alternative that can be "Dirty Flashed", which is "MegaKat". No Wipe!
It will make your setup faster/smoother. It's still a Samsung (MetroPCS) ROM, but tweaked for performance.
You can then customize with Xposed to your hearts content!
If you're interested in that method, download my instructions, which also contains two links to the files you'll need:
https://db.tt/9HnnGRUi
This is what I run and I love it!
TTYL
I see
:good:
Ok so after reading ur post i thought i was gonna be more worried lol ... ok so i guess i wasted my time huh learning experience. ... ive rooted before and flashed custom roms never have done a dirty flash as is not recommended there comes in play what u explained i guess i was just trying to go from stock rooted to update 4.4.4 rooted and ur thread caught my eye i always like experimenting with my phones also bricked and revied a few after alot of reading and help from guys like you who take the time to answer back even if we have to sit back tight, so now that im rooted and got recovery to work thats why i asked u for ur opinion on a good custom rom or heck might give that mega kat a try ive never experimented with exposed hope your other thread explains a bit i know im a noob just a fast learning noob so thanks for the advice and for pointing me in the right way
Big Cat,
Just FYI, I didn't typo. It's "Xposed", not "Exposed" (same pronunciation).
And actually, unless you did a Factory Wipe before this one that you just did, then you just did a dirty flash! Hahaha!
Here's the thing with MegaKat & Xposed:
MEGAKAT: You don't even need Odin. You just go into PhilZ and perform an "Install Zip" and 3 minutes later, yer done flashing, dude! There's a few more steps, but really just rebooting, rerooting from PhilZ (it will work first time) and installing (maybe) one Apk (make sure that "Unknown Sources" is enabled).
MegaKat makes the Samsung ROM much quicker and smoother!!!
XPOSED: Xposed is the best thing since sliced bread!
With Xposed, you are not limited in how you can customize your device! There's lots of Mods (I run 20-30 of them behind the scenes, transparently) that run in a way where they're not "apps", they're "mods".
Are you a gamer? Do you know about running game mods? They're not separate games. They "modify" your game!
But with Xposed, you can Enable/Disable with a tap! They run like they're integrated into your ROM, but they actually don't change your ROM (its files). There's no changing things where you would ever have to reflash you ROM to get back to start. You simple tap once to remove the Mod and Reboot!
For example, I have as one of my Mods, one that directs all Downloads to my installed 64 GB SD Card, instead of my Internal Storage. I also have a Mod that gives me access to AppOps again and one that allows me to "Hide Root" (hide the fact that I'm Rooted) from apps that won't work on a device that's Rooted.
Xposed is like being able to take the best functions from the best Custom ROMS and put them all on your device at the same time!
In fact, that's where many of the Mods come from. A Developer who wanted a feature from <insert Custom ROM name> and programmed up an Xposed Mod to do it! In fact, many times, if you want a feature you saw elsewhere to be on your device without installing the whole ROM, you can just Google "Android" "xposed" and a few descriptive keywords and a mod that does it will pop up in the search results! Hahaha!
Anyway, there's no such thing as an Xposed user that doesn't recommend it as highly as I am right now!
Up to you of course. But that's my recommendation. MegaKat & Xposed and you won't need a Custom ROM after that and you'll fill your need for playing around by testing various Xposed Mods!
TTYL
Thanks for the adv
:highfive:
Dude i really appreciate ur time and great explanation of the process thats why i wanted root for customization and now ive learn u can do that with xposed very nice mods not much of a gamer here either but i do understand what u mean i looked to custom roms cuz i guess they sre already build with the mods from developers who use what they like and bake it together but with this mega kat u dont have to worry about changing like u said the stock rom itself just customization the way you (one) wants it pretty good if u ask me. I downloaded the inst and will get started today on the mega kat installation I'm let you know if i was successful and by the way any link you know for the xposed mods u were telling me about i like the one like u said all ur downloads go to the sd that would come in handy, thanks dude your awsome!!

Big Cat,
Oh no, thank YOU! Hahaha!
Here's the Xposed Framework: http://tinyurl.com/lkvyllh
Here's the Xposed Mods (Lots!): http://repo.xposed.info/module-overview
I'll put together a list of some of mine (with requested) for you.
Don't forget, after installing Xposed, go into the app and "Install Framework" (should turn green).
And after each Mod, go into Xposed >> Mods and check it to Enable it (the Mod). You have to reboot also.
Lastly, most (not all) Mods will have settings pages. The Mods' interfaces (UI's) are Settings pages. They're not like regular apps that way.
Some you will be able to get into and set up before reboot, some not until after.
Also, you can join the MegaCat thread, please? You can tell everyone there how awesome I am. Hahaha! Just kidding.
This thread is for the ROM you already installed and I don't want it to get off track, please. Others who come into this thread will end up seriously confused!!!
With what I gave you for MegaKat, you're caught up threadwise, so you don't have to read there. But your next post to me should be there please???
I'm sharing my instruction set for Mega (I forget his full handle), the developer there too, so all can access it, as there isn't any instructions there.
Here a link to it: http://tinyurl.com/qcqvehj
Cya there, my friend!
