Hello to all members,
I am totally new to this forum and I love it from the very first impression.
I am noob and I know nothing much about android, however I have started to read a lot on this forum. Thanks to all those nice helping guys around.
I am about to buy an android mobile, And, in my budged Sony Xperia X8 and LG Optimus One fits best. I am in great confusion about which phone i should buy.
What i think is X8 is definitely not going to get 2.2 update. But I liked it`s music quality. And in some review, i read that internet browsing his smoother on it than O1. Is that really true?
I want to use lot of internet and music. Please can someone help me out with this?
I done much googling on this, and finally created this thread.
So, in short i wanted to ask you guys to please help about following-
1)can I use those android mobiles as modem, i run windows XP
2)Is it better than symbian s60 ? I am using nokia n72 from past 4 years. Should I switch myself to android?
3)considering internet experiance, which mobile is better?
are there any good browsers available there for more better experiance?
4)according to your experiance, which one should i really buy?
I am waiting eagerly for your responses as I had lot of panic in deciding between these two mobiles. Also, if you know any mobile within same price range let me know.

Wireless/USB Tethering, i guess. Most new Android phones come with this Though I'm not sure if this applies to Eclair (2.1)

I would say yes. Android is much more open and customizable than Symbian. However, Symbian devices require much less CPU and RAM. And in case you ask me, I'd go for Android.

Both of them have a 320x480 resolution, so as screen readability is concerned, I think they're the same. Both don't have flash. There are many browsers are there designed for different kinds of goals. Skyfire, for instance, aims to be able to play those flash videos, even though the phone doesn't have flash player.
By the way, I think the X8 doesn't have multitouch, so no pinch zoom. Pinch zoom is important for me O1 scores here.

O1, since we're going to get (hopefully) Gingerbread soon enough. + multitouch (though buggy), it's newer, bigger RAM and internal memory, etc.
It pretty much answers itself when you post the question in optimus one forum lol, personally I was also considering x8, but since I'm a techie, one look at the ram on x8 (I believe its 128mb) compared to 512mb on optimus one, it was a clear decision.
Thanks!

Thanks so much for your reply AzNxJoHnNy. Yeah, As you said, I am almost about to buy O1. I think I will come to know more once I got my own hands on it.
Thank you so much!

No problem. That's the power of being stuck at home lol. Anyway, here are other phones I considered in the same price range:
1. HTC Wildfire - didn't choose because of screen resolution (240x 320, too low).
2. Samsung Galaxy Spica - I thought there was no multitouch, is old (yeah, for me), no official Gingerbread (considering the fact that the decision was made last december 2010)
3. Galaxy 3/5 - Screen resolution, no Gingerbread.
4. Optimus Chic - I couldn't wait for the release. It was a good decision on choosing the O1 though, since there is no Chic subforum here in xda afaik.
5. Maybe I forgot some other phones. These were my best choices last December
Motorola defy is the next step forward from these phones. Google for it's specs.
The only + X8 has over O1 is headphone audio quality. O1 is pain for ears, even with good headphones.
My x10 is not as smooth as a HTC Legend, an older iPod, iPhone 4 and more phones,
Why is this stupid thing?
Thanks for an answer if you reply.
Mine is quite smooth.
But maybe you thing it isn't as smooth as other devices because it has a 32fps cap.

I guess you've never seen the smoothness of an iPhone 4... Can developers here on XDA remove the cap when the bootloader gets cracked?
I find it very smooth...
The stock firmware isn't, but custom roms are super smooth.. Mine never lags or freezes, and I've use all that you have mentioned above..
Same here. with 2.1 using various roms, there was a noticeable lag, especially moving from an app to the dialler. I'm now using 2.2 cm mod(6. 1.3) and the difference is pretty amazing, no discernable lag atall.
Sent from my X10i using XDA App
iphones are definitely more responsive to the touch. as far as scrolling and everything.
but my x10 with the custom 2.2.1 rom, adw, and all the tweeks is smooth as fast and sometimes seems faster at opening apps and stuff than my gf's evo. so im happy as long as i have these great developers.
tho i do wish it had come like this out of the box.
Well considering the lack of true multi tasking on an iphone it makes sense that it would be smoother as it hardly has to use any of it's ram or processing cpu...
Anyhow, this thread is posted here about every two weeks, if you want an iphone go get one. I'd pick my x10 over one any day

i agree with the two above. had an iphone before this.
only thing i see better about it would be a majority of the apps and games.
the phone itself is much better than an iphone.
+1 for the 'il take my x10 over any iphone any day'
and also +1 for ' it didnt come out of the box as good as it can be'
but its got potential with a bit of research and some modifications... iit can do waayy more than an iphone can
and with the right mods its as smooth as it needs to be imo

Indeed it is, Iphone just pretends of multitasking. SE really deserve that title In X1, X2 and X10 has a Multitask Powner Title!! Compared to iphone, even a intel PIII running just Clock App would be smooth
Wow - When did we all get so good at going completely off topic!..
I had lots of problems with the stock rom being jittery and generally slow.. I didn't want to move to a custom ROM cos none of them are complete.. so I've rooted, installed JIT, and removed some of the preinstalled apps that I don't want (Timescape, and moxier mainly.) now it's fast and smooth..
What if I want to keep Timescape and Moxier? (They are one of the main reasons I'm not switching to a custom rom, other than battery life)

moxier - not a problem, you can purchase it from the market if you need it - there are other email clients anyway but if you like this particular one...
timescape - there are other social media aggregators also, tweetdeck was one that i played with once.
personally i would switch to a custom 2.1 rom and get some alternate apps running. you wont look back I say custom 2.1 rom so you get a complete rom and not a beta. i am running a 2.2 cyanogen rom and its 98% functional but i can understand why others dont like to run beta roms!
how this all relates to the OP? custom roms run so much smoother due to the lack of bloatware and not using the SE launcher. it is a resource pig and when it combines with time/mediascape running in the background at all times - the x10 drags to a halt. i switched to custom roms a while back and have not considered going back at all. closest thing i did was run KXHawkins high performance 2.1 rom for a while - it is based on the SE 2.1 rom with all the crap removed or modified.
EDIT: This is for X10 Mini Pro

So, I've looked around for a phone and while I can get other phones like the LG P500 (Android 2.2 capable) or the Galaxy 550 (cheaper 2.1), the keyboard, the whole design and all, it has gotten to me. I have a low-end touch only and it really annoys me to type with a touch keyboard.
So I've been looking around for all the goodies around and saving all the files on my PC, all organized and ready to be used. So far I've taken care of:
- Rooting the phone;
- Installing Link2SD, from what I read, 2.1 can't move an app to the SD;
- Installing Skyfire 4 so flash videos work.
Now, slade has a fully functional ROM out. How beneficial would it be to ditch the phone's 2.1 for this or any other ROM?
I've been keeping my eye on the CM7 ROM as it seems to be 2.1, right?
So, long post short, what else do you recommend and how beneficial is it for me to dive into the custom ROM environment?
Thanks
Az
It depends on ultimately what you want.
CM7
Fast
Camera LED doesn't work
CM6
Decently Fast
Most everything works (except Google Voice SIP and Angry Birds)
Custom ROM also doesn't have the SE SMS issue when a draft exists, it crashes SMS with the keyboard out.
angry birds works on both cm6/7
also sms app doesnt crash on cm6 when keyboard is out.
which version are you using?
Well, from slade's CM7 post, the camera is stuck at 0.3MP, right? I mean, I will be paying for a 5MP one. Is it fully working on CM6? Cuz I don't really care for the radio or ANT, will not be using those for sure.
Yes cm7 camera is still bad. In cm6 which is froyo btw it will work.
Sent from my U20i using XDA Premium App
Your latest CM6 ROM is flawless, CM7 has bad camera, that's pretty much all I'd notice. So installing CM6 will give me 2.2. I guess that pretty much closes the deal, I guess I'll take your hybrid ROM and wait till CM7 is complete. CM7 is 2.3?
Slade CM6's ROMs (there's 2 flavours) are the most suitable for daily use IMHO.
The camera issues in CM7 prevent it from being a daily use ROM for me.
Almost everything is working perfectly in CM6... only bug i've found is when playing music for a while, sometimes phone crashes.
The great thing about playing with dev roms is that you can always revert back to your stock 2.1 backup (or any other backup) if you don't like it. So give it a try, if you don't like it, just revert back... takes a couple of minutes
The backing up of the original ROM, is it with xRecovery?

Yes, install xrecovery... backup your current install, then play with dev roms until you're happy.... if you don't like whatever you've installed, then restore your backup with xrecovery again
Ok, thank you both, now, on to get the little thing!

I've tryed only Slade's CM6 V2 rom and found that the camera performance is noteably inferior to the stock rom. I ll be happy if proven wrong.

Well, my previous phone was an HTC HD2 which I ran with an android nand rom. Although it was quite a machine I find myself happier with the mini pro, the key points being the hardware keyboard, better 5mp camera and better music quality. Low points are the tiny screen and that the mini pro is slower and also the inferior battery life. Still though, I dont regret the change one bit
I mean, maybe better phones feel better, but I guess I am one of those people that won't feel good without the physical keys. I've seen some differences in prices from shop to shop, I found it a little weird. Like, 20€. But it's okay.
And MT is being worked on, I think awsomeness is on it's way

I just notice that Mini Pro's keyboard perhaps seems to be too small but in real life it is flawlessly useable.
My second note is that: is OK for English only - special characters are pain in the @ss.
Third notice is that: HW keyboard usable only when You using phone "horizontally". In practice I using phone in "vertical" position and if want to type, I must to slide-out HW keyboard, type fast, then close HW keyboard and continue work in this comfort orientation.
If You type much SMS or e-mail, HW keyboard is a _must_. If You browse web-sites often in 320X240 and every time You visit totally different places, typing fast also would be good - but this is real?
For me, my any other uses in "vertical" orientation - so I almost no using HS keybouard
Considering I am Portuguese... I've looked around, special characters really are a pain, but I'll find a way.
I think I can combine horizontal and vertical, I don't really mind the little screen. Internet will be seldomly used, MSN and Skype mostly.
hi , does enyone know if there will be a port from android to lumia ?
because that would be pretty cool , having te possibilit yto run android on this epic phone
i love WP7 but there arent that many awesome apps , so thats why i would love the possibility to run android
anywayz , have fun with your phone !

It will never happen. Two completely different systems. I'm coming from Android and I for one would not want to ruin this phone with putting Android on it. I find WP7 so much more modern and refreshing.
I do not miss force closes nor lag.
I'm not negative to the possibility. I'm just sure it's not possible.
Hi,
I don't think it will happen. Due to there not being that many developers for the lumia. I also thing most of the hardware could be used in android, Seeing as the HTC Desire S and the Sony Xperia Arc use the MSM8255 Snapdragon(but i could be wrong, I have only really started developing).
I just dont see any real advantage of running Android on the Lumia. It is already a great device. I could only see thing going downhill if you did. Your device would have alot of lag plus the lumia only has 512mb of ram. And everybody that has used android will tell you 512mb of ram is sufficiant but not enough to run smoothly or run any intense apps.
You could, but you'd have to ask Dark Forces Team and Cotulla to release either a port of MAGLDR or the source to it to modify the chain boot loader.
Something I'd love to see but doubt we will ever see. I personally just got a Lumia 800 and although it's a nice phone the software lapses too much and in too many places so back to Android I go...even if it is the newer Android which is skinned over and too customised!
As I know the bootloader of lumia is very secured and will not allow modifications like dualOS booting.
1. You are crazy.
2. People always want what they can't get.
Technically it is possible. We have already seen examples of porting Android to older WM devices, like HTC HD2, HTC Touch Cruise, but it involves a lot of work and knowledge in system hacking.
Once you have cracked bootloader you can boot whatever you want. All you need to do is to find a device with the same chipset already running Android and port it over. Of course there will be many driver problems like non working, BT, WiFi, camera etc, but hey, what did you expect.
I bet that there is the same question in Nexus forums - How can we port WP7 to Galaxy Nexus
If you want the Lumia with android, sell it and buy the Nokia N9

You're both crazy, why didn't you just go Android? Strange people?
Yeah I bought this phone to get rid of Andrpid myself. I'm so sick of it!
Why the hell would you want freakin' Android to run on a WP like this?? You're crazy, that's clear
Android only has negative sides, WP is refreshing and smooth. I don't see ANY reason why you would want Android to mess up this beatiful phone.
Okay, I'm an Android hater, that's clear, but let me point it out:
Android is a copy of iOS (it's just boring)
It lags all the way
You need a nuclear power plant to keep it running for 1 day
The user experience is not consistent on all devices (not even with the same OEM!!)
Updates? Yes, if you do it all yourself
Open? Oh, thank you for your openness Android, and the malware...
I can go on if you'd like, but I think it's clear why I don't see this as a good idea...
Lol, that was one of the dumbest trollings I've seen, _Madmatt.
For me its WP which only has negative sides. Its locked, limited, the interface is counter intuitive in many places, can't multitask properly, most apps are inferior to android ones, upgrades are rolled out slowly and with the locked product codes you never know if you'll get the next one, etc.
Ah, and android is no copy of iOS, but the wp7 tiles ARE a copy of android widgets, with some functionality removed.
As for the hardware of the lumia 800, it is superior to my 2 years old N1, with a better CPU, GPU, and the same memory. And my N1 flies running MIUI, so even a crippled phone like this should even be better.
Why did I get a Lumia? I was offered it, tried to use it for some time, gave up, gave it to the wife, who is now begging for me to give her her blade back. Even the better screen and camera were insufficient to convince her to keep using the Lumia. She keeps complaining of the apps, of the terrible battery, of being unable to do anything. Even changing a ringtone is a mess, having to cut and resample a MP3 file before being able to use it as a ringtone.
So, it seems like the Lumia will end in a drawer until someone manages to port android or meego to it. Unfortunately as it was a gift I can't sell it, or it would be gone by now.

LOL, you think I have such things? No way mate
Android and WP7 are two completely different beasts. No point in comparing them it's all about personal preference.
I come from Android and WP7 suits me so much better even though I liked the freedom of Android compared to WP. I rooted and flashed roms like crazy. But I got tired of acting beta tester. So much bugs here and there on Android. Specially if running custom roms.
Sure there are more apps also with more functionality. But I prefer the metro styled WP7 apps as they most often fit the design of the OS. That can't be said about Android apps. Often ugly and no one looks the same making the user experience much worse.
The lagg was the biggest issue for me with Android though. No matter the hardware (SGSII) there is always lag because of how the Android OS is built up. Even ICS won't fix this fully with its hardware acceleration. This is a area where Google has failed. Giving a smooth user experience. Both iPhone and WP7 has this and understand its importance but Android can't unless they rebuild it from the ground which I don't think will ever happen.
Completely agree with ^^
I was active Android ROM builder, tester, themer etc for more than 2 years., but I think I just got tired of endless battle with force closes and laags. The biggest problem with android is that it does not run on native code but on interpreted layer dalvikvm. You can try as hard as you want, but you will always need double horse power for the same tasks on other platforms.
That's also explains why WP7 is perfectly smooth with x2 less CPU and RAM while latest Google flagship with nearly desktop PC power suffers laagspikes here and there. While those small laag spikes are less visible on smartphones things are just getting worse with tablets. Today there is no tablet running Android which can render UI transitions with 60fps.
You can read a blog from ex Google employee about that.
How about some Android graphics true facts?
I agree with you guys, after using android from G1,htc hero, desire S,nexus one,sg1 and 2,galaxy nexus,lg optimus black and apple 4 and 3gs with all the cusotm roms and modifications none of them stand above wp7 smoothness. I can say i never had a lag on my phone ever, where android and ios would lag here and there. Again e-mail aplication is just a joy to use,and all the animation how they smooth transit...it never stops to impress me. Ofcourse it has some shortcomings but definatelly will get better, especially with nokia's help.Aplication wise, well i don't use that many apps but the one i used definatelly looked better than android and apple,it's like the have more soul and not look so dull and borring.
At first i did not like the idea Nokia refused android but now i see that they done the right decision,i see it no better.

Well said. I had got used to the lag and didn't realise how bad it was until I got the Lumia.
I got sick of flashing ROMS too. CM7 was nice and stable, but when ICS roms came out I got sucked in. The gapps are all facelifted and are a lot nicer than Gingerbread. But then the ICS roms all have their issues and it just gets annoying.
Hi all. Long time reader first time poster. Question to you folks out there. I've read up on the Xperia Mini (+Pro). I'm looking for a small form-factor Android phone with a snappy(dragon) speed processor, and want your advice.
1) Would you buy the phone today? If not, why? I know there's bigger and faster, but I don't see on the market anything faster that's as small. I know Sony doesn't talk, but do we think there's a refreshed model coming out soon in 2012 that I should wait for?
2) I'm replacing my Samsung Captivate- can I do these things that I liked to do: a) easy to root/sideload etc? I don't flash ROMs, but do some Rooty stuff.
3) I like swype. Does swype run on the Experia Pro?
4) Suggestions on Mini vs. Mini Pro? I like swype, but if this thing is as small as it looks, should I be looking to get the Pro/keyboard version?
5) GPS never worked on my Craptivate. Does it work well on this phone?
I've got more questions, but I'll start with that!

I have the mini and love it. I have had no issues with it at all. in reply to your questions:
1 - would buy again. the Processor is fast enough. I've never had lag. Also it will get the ice cream sandwich update so the software will stay current on the mini for a while.
2 - I rooted the phone using superoneclickroot which took 1 click. But the latest software update for the phone may mean that root might not be available ~yet~ (see http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1455216 ). If you're buying current stock then more than likely the software update to 62 hasn't been applied yet, so rooting is easy.
3 - I use swiftkey as a keyboard replacement, you can use any android app so swype should work too.
4 - How much do you really use the keyboard? I figured that one of the main reasons in getting the phone was for it to be small & lightweight, so the mini was the smallest & lightest, I used to have a Droid with a keyboard, but now don't miss the keyboard at all.
5 - GPS works fine. I think GPS issues were a Samsung thing?
I'm a mini pro user and must say I'm pretty happy with my phone. But to answer some of your questions I wouldn't buy this phone if I were buying it now, and it's only because I'd really like a bigger screen and perhaps a longer battery as well but these are in no way reasons not to go for this phone. In all my time using it I really had no issues whatsoever and can't find any remarks why not to choose this phone besides personal preference.
The rooting is quite easy excluding the latest firmware which just takes some alternative methods to do, but is not in any way extra hard.
Swype can be used but if you take the mini pro you will most probably get used to the hardware keyboard and will at most times avoid using the on screen one as the hardware keyboard is way more comfortable and easier to use.
Also the GPS works really well, and the phone itself also includes a special module that allows the use of the new tracking technology implemented by the Russians (can't remember the name). So you will have acces to about ten or more satelites (compared to other GPS modules of other phones) which give you faster lock on and more precise measurements.
All in all this phone will not disappoint you, or at least it has not disappointed me.

Brov i would advice yu to get one... am planning of get one soonest too!!!
tha only hinderance about tha phone is dat its small but still handy!
1) Yes, I would. I really like my little phone... I have no idea if any successor is planned - but if so, I don't think it'll be as cheap as the mini/mini pro at the moment.
I also really like the stock launcher, I like the hardware keyboard, the form factor, the speed of the CPU. The camera sucks, the batterylife is mediocre and the display resolution could be higher but it's still a very good phone.
2) I'm quite sure yes. I broke my root with the newest update (but didn't really need it at the moment) but I'm sure the community will come up with a new root very soon.
3) I think so
4) AFAIK the mini does have fewer problems with overall reception (GPS, GPRS, UMTS, WiFi). But - I want the keyboard!! The screen really is quite small - I don't want half of it used by the onscreen keyboard. On top of it - I'm really a lot faster with the hardware one - feels good, works well. TBH, the mini never was a valid option for me.
5) Yes, it does work but compared to other phones the reception is quite poor in my opinion. I don't need it on a day-to-day basis so it's not a deal breaker to me.
Tha main truth is tha SUCCESSOR of dis phone cant be sold dat amount!!! i just love XMP.... I must get it!
If you are interested (and in the UK) I'm selling one. It has only 2 days use, and last night I unlocked the bootloader, put CWM recovery on it, and put NeoDroid's V4 ROM and kernel on it.
Advert here...http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1477219&highlight=xperia+mini+pro
Indeed a nice little phone. Much much snappier since I put the custom ROM on it. Got it overclocked to a safe 1.2GHz and removed all the bloatware. Running it as my daily use phone for a few days to make sure there are no bugs.
I've had mine for a few months and would still get one.
The screen is small/low resolution, but it fits in my pocket and there's very little out with a keyboard here.
SE made it easy to unlock, so I have a custom kernel and have no problems with it set to 1.6GHz.
I didn't like the launcher at all with its corners thing, but that's easy to replace
Sorry- I'm in the US, would need a version that could run on AT&T's network bands

Launchers like ADW, there's a few on the market
Custom kernels give a few more options, (Rage/KarmaRush) so something like setCPU or Tasker can set it to a higher CPU speed

That's ADW+, Beautiful widgets, Minimalistic text, Tasker. If you're going to have a nice little phone like this, it's worth making it your own

dis is nice brov.... is dis screenshot taken from XMP?
Hello
1. I had an Xperia X10 mini pro, but bought an Xperia mini pro a few month ago. I am very happy with this phone and would buy the same again, if this one broke.
If you need a phone now, buy it now, It is a nice phone, the only problem I see is the that it can run out of RAM, but then get a kernel that supports SWAP, so you can get some paged memory.
2. I think that it is easy to root, even though it was easier on the Xperia X10 mini pro. The biggest problem is that you it is hard to switch back to the stock ROM. But Once you have tried CM7, will you never return (and CM9 is on the way).
3. I do not know about the Xperia pro, but I have not seen it on the Xperia mini pro, but there are very similar keyboards.
4. Personally I would never buy the Xperia mini. The pro version is not that much bigger and it actually has a very nice keyboard.
5. The GPS of the Xperia mini pro is working very nice here in Denmark. I actually use it as my primary GPS (even though I have a TomTom). I have seen some problems if I am too far out in the country and surrounded by big trees. But in exception of that am I very happy with the GPS of the Xperia mini pro combined with Google Maps.

You should try to install "GO Launcher EX" from the market.
hnl_dk thanks for dat info.... i think i ll buy it early nextmonth!
but yu talk bout Go Launcher EX, is it better dan tha ADW+??? but i thought Go Luanhcer EX is use for themes cos i use to see alongside themes.
Ok- I have to ask- what is with your grammar and spelling? I wouldn't mind if you said that you were not a native english speaker- where are you from? sorry.
I will start with the problems I have with Mini Pro
* Low resolution - You wont be able to play some games
* Small Screen -Nut can't take it as a big negative because its a MINI pro
As for your queries there is nothing in the current market which has the same or better hardware and is small .In the world of gadgets/technology it is normal for some product to be squished by a better one and it is inevitable so there is no use waiting for a newer one .
You can easily ROOT your phone ,there is a simple tool available - connect phone, click root and your done .
I don't think you will need swype because of the physical keyboard .But yes it will run.
Mini has no keyboard thats all .
GPS works without any issues .

They can both do themes, and I think there's free versions to try out. The difference is just preference, things like a few options or speed
I have no idea about XMP, I just used screenshot from the power button
I just recently got my SE Xperia Mini Pro, and I'm loving it. For the price I payed for it, I am surprise they are making a profit. My budget was around £250, I checked many phones and many didn't have the specs I was looking for. I needed a fast and good quality camera phone and the Mini Pro lives up to its standard.
Pros
Very fast phone, only crashes when you put it to the extreme
Camera is amazing, really surprised with the picture quality
Can run most apps and games without any problem
Hardware keyboard is really sturdy
SE has added Swype in the 2.3.4 update for the Mini Pro
Cons
Screen a bit small for typing
The outside feels like cheap plastic
This is a great phone for the price. If your budget is low, definitely get this one, If your budget is higher, a bigger screen might do better
