try axura 2.2.6
i never had any problems with gps using axura roms....
I had no problem with my gps before I flashed the Axura Rom. I've also tried GPSrestore but no luck. I'm also using 2.2.5.9. I've tried several other apps like gps test, gps status...nothing works.
Just flashed Axura to my Vibrant last night. Ridiculously smooth and snappy. The only problem I had was the GPS. Found the LbsTestMode menu (had to make a shortcut through applications to do it) and changed the settings as suggested on another thread or site (honestly can't remember which). Downloaded GPS Test from Market, tested and ran Maps to see if I could get a lock. It actually locked, but not for long enough to do anything with. It would search and search, then lock on 2 or 3 for just a moment before searching again. Downloaded GPS Restore from Market, ran it once in a semi-open area, and began getting extremely fast locks, which would hold for a minute or two. Accuracy was off, but not horribly. I was at least in the same town on the same street. It was jumpy and not reliable for driving use, but the fact that it would lock at all was a major improvement. I personally don't use GPS that much, but I don't like broken features, so I tried to fix it. This is my results, if amyone else has another idea then let me know.

I know some people have complained about GPS on honeycomb and I've been trying to find a thread on it but can't. Anyway I just noticed the other day when I happened to have my tablet on me, and wanted to use GPS, that the GPS is useless on honeycomb. I can't vouch for gingerbread as I only had gingerbread all of 15 minutes on the tab, but it would lock on to me rather quick, but then repeatedly loose signal and try to lock on again. Its pretty much unusable. Is there a fix? Would another Navigation app other than Google navigation solve it? Maps seems to work fine, its just when it actually has to navigate you somewhere where it doesn't work right.

This problem is encountered on WiFi only Flyers (BestBye) and discussed here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1431964
The only known solution now - go back to Gingerbread, like I did.
Before I tried to use Fasterfix, then LeeDroid ROM 4.1 - all without result.
Hi there - wondering if anyone else has experienced this or can help me. Have seen some similar-ish threads dating back many months but nothing exactly seems to answer this
Until last week, the GPS on my S2 was working fine. Always locked pretty quickly etc.
But for the last week or so, I cannot seem to get a GPS fix AT ALL. I have tried restarting, clearing the aGPS data, etc. etc.
I have installed GPS Status and GPS Aids from the marketplace as recommended in some places. GPS Status shows many satellites being detected in grey, but nothing locks on to them. My phone is not rooted so I have not tried to alter settings etc. as yet, as not really sure this is the problem as I have not changed anything recently. (Could t-mobile have done something on their end that is causing it maybe.. ??)
I am running stock ICS on t-mobile.
Any illumination anyone could offer would be most appreciated!
many thanks
Have you flashed any rom?

Even if it was a carrier update, no need to be a custom rom.
I use GPS-Test to "test" my GPS, can you please install it tell us what is the biggest SNR you get?
I think you will only get a lock if you have at least 3 sats with SNR above 30.

i was using gps status and aid like you did. didnt work till i tried gps test plus.
Many thanks for all the replies
@arc Have not flashed a ROM, just using stock ROM which got upgraded automatically to ICS from gingerbread a few months ago
@zedread Installed GPS Test and tried it briefly just now. Get 7-9 satellites with SNRs of between 20 and 40. All of them stay grey and none of them get used for locking. This is similar to what I have seen in GPS status etc. (i.e. it seems to find satellites but does not proceed to try and lock any of them...all of them always stay grey)
@happily can you advise what it is in GPS Test Plus that helped? Just got the free version at the moment.
Anyone have any more ideas?
Many thanks
Try FasterFix from Google Play Store.....good luck.

Hey Guys,
Loving my galaxy s3 however something strange is now happening. I used to live in Brisbane and recently moved to Sydney, whilst I was in Brisbane I often used the GPS and google maps navigation (google navigation whatever you want to call it ) and it performed amazing! it locked onto location instantly and would guide me and track my position superbly.
Now I've been in Sydney for 3 days, and I tried to use the navigation several times and it was terrible! It would take a minute or two to lock onto my position but would still be fairly innacurate and would not engage the navigation, just sat in that screen where it is zoomed out and roughly shows the route to take, sometimes it would engage into the navigation but then would stop tracking me and just say it lost GPS location.
Has anyone experienced this problem? or know what I can do to fix it!! Thanks
Couple of suggestions:
Have you changed your Google location? Whenever I've changed ROM's I get asked to let Google use my location - maybe there is something in the Google set up that still thinks you are in Brisbane and has to keep scanning for your new location?
Have you got the map for Sydney - I know you can get maps on your phone but maybe only your home location is auto-downloaded, so you get a zoomed out version for other places? Maybe go into the Maps app and select Sydney and see if it brings down a more detailed version?
Maybe check for Maps/Navigation updates? I got a Maps one a few days back.
I hope this helps - not sure at all if any of them are applicable but it is what I'd be checking...
For the google location, I sort of reset it, I turned it off (the option to let google use your location) and turned it back on. Not sure what else you can do in that department.
Ive got the map for sydney and my maps and navigation are up to date! Thanks for the suggestions but, its just really frustrating as it used to work so well
Use either GPS test or GPS status to see how well your GPS is working. Both are available free in market. They will also download agps data to help with a faster fix.
Check that you do have satellites switched on in settings.
If you are rooted you could try the wildfire agps patch. I think it is posted in the development thread.

thanks for the suggestion! just downloaded GPS status and one of the reviewers had the same issue that was resolved by clearing and downloading agps data (just like you mentioned). So will try tonight and hopefully problems will be gone, thanks!

That method always worked for me on the S2 when I was in a different location. Takes seconds to reload the new data.

I can't really help but my s3 in sydney has almost instant lock, except when in a tunnel.
By a strange quirk of fate I have just experienced the same issue that you faced.
After a lot of frustration I found a simple fix.
Turn off GPS and other location settings in main settings, power of and reboot. Switch everything back on in settings and all should be well again.
Hope this, belatedly, helps.

If you are on a custom ROM then the first line of the GPS.conf file in system/etc will be set to "north-america.pool.ntp.org". Change the "north-america" part to "au" and restart. Then reset/redownload gaps data.using GPS status. Hope this helps.
Hello,
This is nothing new - this device has GPS problems with custom firmwares. However, I wanted to share my experience and thoughts and clarify a thing or two. Tried different ROMs, radios etc. with no success to get stable GPS for daily use with latest ROMs. So I discovered that GPS on older ROMs works differently than on newer ones. For example:
On CM 7.2 - GPS Status&Toolbox gets green even with one sattelite (fix/sat - 1/1) - it can get fix to 10+ sattelites but will never get a lock no matter how much time I'm waiting on it.
On CM 6.1, B 0.8.4, and probably stock - GPS Status&Toolbox firstly discovers sattelites (yellow), it needs at least 4 or more sattelites (yellow) to get a fix. Once it gets a fix (for example 4/4) it changes to green color and gets immediate lock. This is also how it works on my Hero and usually is pretty fast.
So could this be a GPS driver/software problem in the ROM and why can't we get it to work on CM 7.2 the same way it's on 6.1?
I really want to be able to use newer, beautiful custom ROM like HomICS, AOPK, but since there is GPS problems on them I'm stuck on 6.1 or stock.
Cm 7.2 is one of the few roms were GPS actually works properly for me, I've written much about my GPS experiances in quite a few threads and some of my own threads, have a look around, they might be worth a read.

Yes, I did read some threads even yours and tried practically everything mentioned there but without any luck. I've got a few locks with CM 7.2 but it was couple of times when I first flashed it (mobile network was active (3g), however, I dont use it, ever) and the next day it would fix to 10/10 or more but without any lock.
Even today I got practically immediate locks with 6.1. in 10 to 20 seconds. Frustrating that this is not working the same way on 7.2.
How about you, in GPS Status&Toolbox, is your device fixing to satellites one by one (becoming green) without getting a lock? Or it needs couple of yellows before it gets a fix?

I have found that GPS status and toolbox doesn't fully work with the legend, mainly using the clear GPS data and for downloading a-gps data. I used quite a few different apps and basically pulled my hair out through shear frustration till I found something that seamed to actually work.
I use GPS test by Mike Lockwood from the market, this seams to work for clearing GPS data and download a-gps, but generally don't use it as my primary GPS app,I use AndroiTS GPS test free from Alessandro Bonetti also from the market, but for some reason is very hard to search for.
Personalty on my device these apps are the only 2 that give me constantly good results were all the other GPS apps I've tried didn't.

Yes, I did read your thread and tried these apps too. With AndroiTS I was getting elev azim data but no success in getting it to lock.
What about your lock time in daily use, seconds/minutes/ tens of minutes?
I use cm 7.2 (latest nightly) out in the open my lock time can be any where between a few seconds (maybe like 10 seconds) and a few minutes (2-3).

To make things a bit more complicated, after using GPS once, I have to restart the phone. Otherwise, it will not lock again. The first time it will lock in under 1 minute.

That's why I´m still using BlaY0´s ROM, I need GPS!
gpsfix works good for me!
I just got my wife and myself the S4, our first Samsung phones. Everything seems to be great, except GPS and navigation. I am hoping I am missing something simple. I did not see this issue discussed in the S4 forums here, actually there was one about just how good GPS is with this phone. Anyhow my problem, GPS rarely locks in when I start navigation using Google maps. It will accurately show my present location, I am assuming it is using the wireless network to show that. But 90% of the times I use navigation, it will not lock at all. I have found that if I go into settings and uncheck the stand alone GPS services box, then recheck it I will get immediate GPS lock and can navigate. Then the very next time I need to use navigation, same thing, no GPS lock. I downloaded the GPS status app and same thing there, will not lock on a single satellite, I do my uncheck/recheck thing, and instantly I have many many locked satellites. Anything I am missing in settings?
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Fred
I have the same issue.
Works fine for me on stock. I get almost instant GPS lock outdoors. I did have some issues on some ROMs, but I think that was ROM specific, because flashing back to my backup of stock fixed it.
Well I am trying to contact Samsung support. See what sort of run around they can give me.

I had this problem on the GS3...not sure about the S4 yet. Anyway, I found that turning on GPS only when I needed it and turning it off when I didn't made it work correctly. Obviously this isn't ideal but the GPS was 100% using it that way.
I may have found a fix. I tweeted with Samsung support today. They had me boot up in safe mode. In safe mode it only boots up stock apps, nothing that has been downloaded. Well my GPS worked just fine. So it would seem to indicate one of the apps I downloaded was the cause. So I rebooted and began to uninstall any app I had installed. Every two apps I would check the map, still no GPS lock. I had to uninstall every app I installed. Once they were all off the phone, my GPS once again worked perfectly. So I began to re-install the apps one by one, checking the map each time. It kept working. Eventually I had re-installed every app I just took off. GPS, maps and navigation still working perfectly. My wife's S4 had the same issues, so I uninstalled everything, re-installed it, and her GPS works as well. We decided to run some errands and used the navigation for each stop, worked perfectly.
Don't ask me why, I have no clue, but so far my phone is fixed. Will report back if anything changes.
Oh, and if you want to boot up in safe mode and don't know how, power off your phone. Power it back on, when the first loading screen comes up, press the down volume key until the phone reboots. It will be in safe mode. It will be indicated as such in the bottom left hand corner of your screen.
I hope this helps others and is a permanent fix.
GPS not locking, possible solution.
Ok, well I think I have my problem narrowed down to one app. After deleting and re-installing all my apps GPS worked just fine. This morning I opened up Yahoo Weather for the first time since re-installing. Knowing it used GPS location I checked navigation right after. Sure enough I had lost my GPS functionality. Uninstalled the app, all GPS services came back. Check the same issue with my wife's S4, same results.
I am not saying this is the only app causing issues, but seems to be on my phone. Without the Yahoo weather app, all is good. Which is a shame because I really liked the app.

I confirm removing Yahoo weather fixes the issue. Thanks a lot for this solution.
Good, I am glad it help. Not sure if it will help or not, but I did send an email to yahoo support. I am hoping maybe they can come up with an update that will fix the issue.
An easier way of going into safe mode is holding the power button, then when the shutdown menu pops up, hold down the power off button. Might be a little easier

I've been beating myself up over this. I haven't had the phone a week and thought my GPS was shot. I know this is an old thread, but it fixed me. Thanks again. Darn Yahoo Weather!
Are there still problems with this? The app received an update on august 15th.
I've tried turning on the GPS and Google Maps works ok for now.
