Which Keyboard? - Vibrant Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hey everyone on xda,
I've been looking for a good keyboard that gives a good amount of space for typing. I don't care for the word prediction/auto correct features I usually turn those off because they're more of a bother than something that helps. I have tried swype (was ok but never truly cared for it) and the gingerbread keyboard (currently using, but the keys are a little to small) and I would like to know what your preference is for a keyboard.
TLDR - Which keyboard do you prefer?

if you flash axura, it comes with a modded htc sense keyboard which is awesome. The only bad thing about it is it doesnt respond as fast as gingerbread keyboard.

I personally like swipe and the GB one. The stock samsung keyboard isn't so bad either it offers plenty of space. Like stated above, you might like the HTC one here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=624416 look for the right one. There's some screenshots in there as well.

I'm a big fan of SwiftKey - currently half price on the market ($1.99 down from $3.99). I know you stated you don't like prediction/auto-complete, but SK's is terrific. I find myself able to type much faster with it than any other keyboard.

Alright thanks for all the replies. Would I be able to take the .apk file of the htc keyboard from the axura rom? I have looked at the swiftkey keyboard but I don't feel that spending cash on a keyboard is worth it when they're great keyboards that are free.

I also like SwiftKey and the voice input on SK seems to work better than the one on stock Android keyboard.

Bump to see if I would be able to take the HTC keyboard apk from the Axura rom and push it onto my phone through root manager.

this is htc_ime. just download and unzip. install the apk like you normally would from your SD card.
if you feel adventurous, use the htc_ime keyboard kitchen to make a custom keyboard for yourself. its super easy.
hit thnx

Thanks for all the replies and the link .
Edit: Can't hit the thanks button the xda app doesn't support it <.<

If you click search, and then hold down the input thingy, a box will appear and hit "input method" you can change it from swype to the android keyboard and samsung keypad.
I use better keyboard, been using it since my G1 and by far the best one. I've tried a bunch and keep going back to better keyboard.
Swiftkey Beta. I love Swiftkey sooooo much. It feels like it's reading your mind after a while.
htc_ime is the best, all the other ones i try want to be so percise, its annoying.
who would not want to use swype?

people who dont like swiping, i like typing.
I use Smart Keyboard Pro with the htc skin. The best things I like about it are the multitouch and the virtual d-pad.

I've been using swype since day one and, ironically, today I had enough. I can't take its lag anymore. Cutting words in half with the word behind it. Wrong guesses as to what I'm trying to type over and over. I've been using the android keyboard which is OK, but I think ill check out some of the suggestions. I loved swype up until recently. Maybe its the update.

Replacement Keyboard Suggestions?

So I'm pretty much pissed off at the stock HTC keyboard, and Swype doesn't work for me, so I'm wondering what keyboard is worth installing to replace.
I've tried Swiftkey and Smart Keyboard, but they both have problems with double letters when typing fast.
What keyboards are you all using with your 3VO?
Im using Smart keyboard pro and I have problems with it not responding sometimes. I need a better keyboard also. I can't stand the htc one.
if you don't dig swype (and it is an acquired taste I'll admit) I would then recommend swift....
...don't dig swift? Well, almost every other keyboard out there (that isn't trying be either be "swype2" or super unique) will be the same (at best) or worst.
Do swift...have it learn from your txts....srsly, how does that not work for you?
got the old ginge keyboard, seems to be ok.. space bar is a little small..
I was leaning towards the GB stock keyboard, just need to find a modified apk for one with the smilie key. I miss that from my rooted EVO.
I'll probably give into Swift, just was curious what everyone else uses.
Check out hackers keyboard. Its pretty cool.

I downloaded the Swift Beta from the marketplace, seems pretty good, no issues so far with double letters.
I really dig thumb keyboard 4.
The ability to split the keyboard while in landscape so Tue keys are closer to the sides has actually made me want to type in landscape.

I really really miss the GB keyboard. I tried the apk I had from the Evo as well as the one from the market, both not sized for our screens(too small). I'm surprised no update either
Hackers has an ass load of options. I like you can change the overall size it takes up on the screen.
Though I have the full version of SwiftKey, I find the SwiftKey x beta works best for me.

I'm loving flex t9. it's way better than swype imo. plus I got it free from Amazon app a day. I would have bought otherwise. you can trace, write, or voice command it.

the more it learns the better it works.....make sure to let it learn periodically....or make it....also only pick the language modules you need...trust me....I thought I'd shot for flexibility....pfft....more like shooting for randomization--the same applies for swype, lol.

just got swiftkey x beta, gonna give it a try. anything will be better than the crappy stock keyboard.

what keypad are you using?

getting a little annoyed with the choice of keypads, none are quite right for me. I find the majority of them the space bar is too small and im constantly hitting the full stop instead. I like the swiftkey keypad for its predictive properties but the space bar is the same size as normal. Ive tried the iphone emulator keypad which has a much better size keypad but not the predictive options. Although ive only tried the free version so far, is anyone using the paid for version and does it have better prediction? Currently im trying the perfect keypad free version and it seems a bit better, the space bar is a decent size and basically looks like the giingerbread keypad.
Annoyingly i know the perfect keypad for me, its the htc one, ive used it on 4 different phones and it was perfect but ive not seen anyone port it to the SGS2 so far?
What keypads are people using? what are their pros and cons?
Smart keyboard allows you to customize the keyboard however you'd like
[Bigger space bar in your case?]

I am using swiftkey X .its very very good. the text prediction is pretty good.I recommend it. the app is paid but worth every cent.
From yesterday I am using touchpal input beta (one has to sign up for beta invite) . its pretty neat too. Its a combination of swype like gestures+ predictive text. worth a try.
Im also using swift key x, i love it! its amazing, it has so many features like it can even go through your sms/emails to "learn" how you type i.e. all your slang automatically. Worth the money imo.
yes ive got swiftkey x too, its prediction seems to eb the best there is, i just find the space bar too small, if i could have swiftkey with the size of space bar that the iphone emulator keypad has it would be perfect
Hackers keyboard (from XDA). Much better than the stock keyboard.
"Keyboard from Android 2.3" is my favorite. I use the "+" paid version. Same as stock gingerbread keyboard, only it's more customizable.

SwiftKey x is great, i only wish we could edit the theme, remove the SwiftKey button and question mark button and make the spacebar bigger and it would be perfect, anyone know a way todo that?

Swiftkey x with the HTC keyboards UI and the ability to edit the layout would make my perfect keyboard!
For some reason the HTC keyboard has a less responsive spacebar and worse autocorrect it is nice though!

Best & "Lightest" Keyboard?

Well, Swiftkey X has lost its appeal to me.
What are some of the best keyboards out there that, as odd a request as it might seem, are also light on system resources?
I just like a snappy keyboard that doesn't take two seconds to pop up or disappear, and doesn't 'stumble' when typing (no input for a sec, then all of a sudden puts in your last 3 strokes).
I don't need much in terms of theming, but the one thing I found with Swiftkey that I REALLY fell in love with was the ability to change the long key press time threshold...for example, I decreased it from like 500ms to 250ms...it makes typing for me a whole lot faster. Are there any other keyboards with that?
Thanks for your input fellas.
My swipe pops up right away. However, I HATE typing passwords or usernames with it. I know that doesn't really help, as I cna't find any keyboards I like... I can't stand swiftkey, especially with the browser, as that .com is ALWAYS in the way when I try to search. For general use, I like the stock keyboard actually... its less laggy than the froyo one was, but it still is a bit laggy...
i used for a while go keyboard, but now i'm using thumb keyboard 4 and it's highly customizable, fast no lags, perfect for my big fingers

I've been eyeing that one and think I'll check out the free demo/trial they have.
Unfortunately, Mgamerz, I kinda don't like any swype keyboards. I actually tried going back to it for a while when Swiftkey started fading and still couldn't get into it.
Thanks for the input guys.
I'm using thumb keyboard and its pretty good. Really like the portrait layout, making it soeasy to type.
It would be much better if it let me customize every single keys so I can make my own layout or keys that I use often.

Well I was mistaken, there is no demo.
But you like it? Never ran into any lag? I see a review here and there that says it lags but it was literally only like 2, and one of them was using the LG optimus (the little crappy one T-mobile has, I think)
@knjigo: You're right...I don't like swyping though. Plus, I'm actually referring not to the length of the vibration feedback, but to how long it takes for, say, when I press a letter at the top with a number mapped "under" it for the long keypress, I could actually change how long I had to wait while pressing the letter to get the number to pop up.
I like it. Using it since alien rom and now I'm using cm7. I have experienced NO lag at all on this beast.

i got Smart Keyboard can change sizes and nice theme. and i tested all the keyboards and thats the only one i like if u want it msg me and ill get u apk for it.
I use FlexT9 - It works great - even in browsers and typing usernames/passwords (just type like a regular keyboard) and its a "swype" style keyboard.

Also doesn't take full screen in landscape.

Do you constantly hit the period button instead of the space? I seem to do this only with android phones. Not sure why, I don't if its just me or what.

Swype Tablet Beta using the SPen to swype is the best keyboard combo I have found for the Note. Easily the fastest and most accurate way to enter text that I have found...I think I type faster on my phone than I do on my laptop. Haha. That being said, I'm terrible at typing on a laptop/computer keyboard...never learne to use all of my fingers so I just pick at the keyboard with two fingers. Glad my career won't require fast typing.
As to the OP, I definitely run into that problem with some keyboards. Try the Swiftkey 3 Beta, you don't need to use the spacebar unless you're typing a word not in the keyboards dictionary, and it works really well; I think it's awesome how it automatically detects words and puts in spaces for you. Plus, it has some awesome themes to match ICS.

I like using the SPen, and the regular Swype buttons seem too large. Even with fat fingers I have no problems with the smaller buttons. Also, the tablet version had a tab key which is really useful for taking notes in class.

I know one thing. The stock keyboard that came on the GNote is f*cking garbage.
Also I'm trying Swype with the S-pen for the first time right now and it's not bad, other than some punctuation errors I had to go back and fix.
