Hello all I have a rooted Aria with FR008.
Had it running smoothly for about a week until the last couple days.
Had a little over 100MB of space left on the phone, then legit 45 mins later( the phone standing idle) I randomly got the "Low On Space" message at the same time Android system usage went up to 80% + for about an hour or so and drained the battery to below 10% then the system usage went down to about 20%.
Any ideas on what causes this? It happened two days ago and I just started from scratch, and then it happened again today...getting kind of frustrating wiping the phone every other day.
I've used all the cache cleaners, task killers, and moved everything to the SD than can be.
I just find it strange that I saw that the phone had 133 MB left of space...legit hit the power button, then turned it on 45 mins later to find that warning...and having less then 8MB left on the phone.
Are there any programs that update automatically that dont go to the SD card?
Any help is appreciated...thank you!
Which programs do you have installed and do they run in the background?
Gmail, Dropbox, ebay, twitter, facebook, barcode, astro, apps2sd, wifi analyzer...plus the task killers and cache cleaners....
Had them installed for a few days running fine, and then like I said, in a matter of 45 mins, before I knew it, the go from 100+ MB to 9 MB internal storage.
This happened today, and the only program new I installed today was the Wifi Analyzer
Thanks.

Which task killer are you using? Is the cache cleaner something that runs automatically, too? What purpose does the Wifi Analyzer do and does it do any logging?
Using the Advanced Task Killer...I tried setting the cache cleaner both to manual and auto clean...no difference. The Wifi Analyzer doesnt do any logging, just detects the wifi signal stregnth. Either way this is the second time its happened, and the first time I didnt have the wifi analyzer.
Thanks.

Is this your first Android phone? Why are you running Advanced Task Killer? What was your reasoning for deciding you needed to run it? With the FR008 ROM and Froyo 2.2 using a task killer actually has a negative impact on the Aria. Android does a great job at managing the memory just fine. So try removing Advanced Task Killer and the cache cleaner and see if that solves your issue.
Ive uninstalled both of what you asked, restarted the phone a couple times and still have the message on the notification bar at the top
"Low on space"
"Phone storage space is getting low"

What else did you do to clean up the phone storage space? How much storage was available when you started?
Try going into clockwork and clearing cache. Also clear cache on market and browser.
Thanks for all the suggestions...I just ended up starting fresh again...tried all your suggestions and still had the low storage space warning...I'll just have to take it day by day and hope it doesnt happen for the third time!
I had the same problem until I enabled a2sd. You might want to check if it is enabled; it was not on my FR008 - i think you have to do it after the fact.
You can change the text message limit to automatically delete a thread after a certain amount is reached. You can also use Titanium Backup to uninstall stock apps that you don't use, or even freeze apps that you don't want running all the time.

when you are starting fresh all of these times, are you doing a complete wipe?
i ran into an issue with low phone storage while running cm6 from all of my back and forth flashings. when i decided to start using cm7 nightlies, i wiped data/cache, formatted system partition, and upon installing the rom had plenty of space and haven't had any issues.
i'd try a complete and utter wipe of all your phones data/cache.
Little late, but its better to have this info here for others, found the issue...It was the Twitter application. It was syncing the contacts and with my 10K plus followers, it was chewing up my space

Hey
Till last week I used to have an average of 400-450mb RAM free on the phone. Now I have a max of 250-260mb free. All that I can remember doing different to the phone is installing a few games and other apps, which of course are not used 24/7.
I'm using Advanced Task Killer (free version) and I have set it on "Crazy" app killing every 30 mins. Still I'm stuck with around 200mb. I can feel the lag when scrolling through the homepages.
What did I do and more importantly what can I do?
did you try rebooting the phone..heheh
if you have CF-root .. boot into cwm..clear cache..clear dalvik cache and reboot..
You shouldn't have lag on the homescreen regardless of whether you have 200mb or 400mb of RAM left..
Are you using many widgets or a live wallpaper (or apps like 3g watchdog or anything that keeps a presence in the notification bar like SetCPU?), sounds like you have a memory hog somewhere
And forget using a task killer.. the apps will just start up again anyway which will waste more RAM, find AutoStarts from the market and stop useless junk starting up
Thanks guys for the quick response. I actually restarted for some other reason and found that the RAM was back upto 590-595mb, but thats probably just coz of system files not starting yet. Right now, say 30 min after restart its around 475mb.
I'm running the stock KE7 ROM, so I'll try clearing the cache in that and see what happens.
There is no point in having "free" ram on android. Uninstall ATK and just use your phone. The constant restarting of killed applications does more harm than good and might even cause your lag.
Anyone,
I've run into an oddity that I'm hoping someone could help explain. First, I'm running Cyanogen Mod 6 (update-cm-6.1.2-0.11-Milestone-signed.zip) on my HTC Aria. I've been running CM6 since last December.
A couple of weeks ago, my gmail account quit syncing and I stopped receiving text messages. Over the course of the last 2 weeks, I've gotten it working on and off. What finally got it working was to address the other informational message I was getting (running out of memory on my phone).
I was down to < 10% of the phone's main memory remaining. I found out that if I rebooted and cleared the cache, it would work again until the cache grew and brought available storage on the phone (I have an 8G SD card in it) to under 10% left.
Any app that I can move to the SD card has been moved to the SD card but it appears those apps still have some amount of data that they store on the phone? This AM, I finally removed some apps completely that were nice but not necessary for me to have on the phone and I haven't had a problem.
So, does anyone know if this is a known issue? Or, just a coincidence that text messages and emails stop when running low on memory.
Thanks.

First off, Why are you using the milestone Cyanogenmod6?
use this : http://download.cyanogenmod.com/get/update-cm-6.1.1-Liberty.zip
Clear dialer storage.SMS mms dialer all use the same storage.clear that up and you're good.

Thanks for the info.
I was actually on that one (still have that zip on my sd card) but, when it started to not receive txt messages nor gmail, I went looking for something newer than what I had installed to see if there was a different version of Cyanogen that would work better. I tried CM7, a liberated Froyo, and the official Android 2.2 from AT&T (so I had to search through the forums to find out how to re-root my phone). I think I just ended up on the Milestone build (and since it was a CM6 like I had been using since Dec, I just quit trying new versions).
I just put the 6.1.1-Liberty back on. It had 24MB of internal stoarge left (out of 185MB). I moved a 15MB app from my SD card to my phone to get the available memory down below 10%, giving me the message about being low on memory. I sent a txt msg to my wife and she responded but, the response has not come through after waiting 5 min (while mine got to her phone in a few seconds).
Could there be an undocumented feature to prevent emails and txt messages when there's not much free space on the device? I cannot move Messaging nor Gmail to my storage card so I can see why someone might put a limit on that to avoid filling up the phone storage. Does anyone know if this feature is customizable so I can make it go to 5% before ignoring email and text messages?
I'll make sure to stay on top of those warning messages and make sure my next phone has more internal memory.

Yes, I have heard of not being able to receive text messages when you are too low on internal storage. I don't know why it happens, but in general Android does not handle low memory situations very well and things just stop working properly.
Unfortuntely the Aria has very little internal storage, so it's difficult to avoid this problem. The best thing you can do is to start taking advantage of one of the various apps2sd methods (not the built-in Android one). There are basically two of particular interest:
Darktremor - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=790786
This method should work with CM6, but is more complicated to set up. Once you have it set up, though, you don't have to change anything and can just let it work its magic.
Simple2Ext (S2E) - https://market.android.com/details?id=ru.krikun.s2e
This method only works on CM7, but is very easy to set up.
You mentioned that you already tried CM7. Did you try CM 7.1.0 RC1? I've been really happy with this build for the past month and would recommend it. Of course the added benefit is being able to use S2E.
I've had this issue before. If you're receiving the 'low storage' message, you'll stop receiving emails, texts, and even app updates begin to fail.
Just gotta clear up some space.
Yup, had the same but in my case the GTalk wouldn't start up. Def having low internal memory kills the phone without a good reason, specially because it's a percent rather than a hard number...
Do use a App2SD app that enables you to move the dalvik cache to the SD and you'll see a lot of space cleared. I recommend darktremor + the GUI (available the latter in the market)

The following thread has some good info.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=770146 ... more specifically ... this page that is linked from that thread.
One thing that I've done that I haven't seen mentioned is replacing the google apps (Gmail, Googlevoice, Maps, Market, Street...) in system/apps with the updated versions. Keeps the updates from stealing internal storage. As a heads up, the market app is the "Vending.apk" for those that did not know. I actually replace the apps in the rom I'm using (Liberated2.2.2) and reinstall that. Not including google apps I have 51 apps installed, 13 on the phone, 38 on the card and right now I have close to 116 MB internal storage available. I have a feeling that the 51 apps that I think is a lot is a drop in the bucket for some.
I loaded CM 7.1 stable on my Fascinate a couple months ago and sometime there after I started getting Force Closes all over the place.
Rebooting my phone only seemed to temporarily alleviate the issue for an hour or so, but shortly after it would start occurring again. It wasnt until I opened Touchdown that I found the potential cause as it reported I was "Low on space". I found this pretty odd seeing as I had several GBs free on both internal and SD storage.
After searching around a bit I believe it's my cache thats filling up. I ran Clear Cache in CWM it cleared up the issue for several days but eventually it starts occurring again.
First question: is clearing the Cache via CWM on regular intervals going to hurt anything?
Second (and more important) question: Is there any way to fix this without going with a different ROM?
Thanks a bunch in advance!!
I got it too!
I'm having the same issue, or I believe I am. You get a notification saying your low on space, and you can't receive any txtmsg's? Once you clear up the space the msg's come through fine.
I was using the stable for a long time.. and didn't get the error, and then I flashed the latest nightly and that's when I got the error.
I don't think the nightly is what caused the error, I actually believe it's pure coincidence. I've managed to keep in under control and can fix it when it happens.
I clear my cache as well, but I found out that the /data/data also needs some cleaning to get rid of the error. When I free some space in the /data/data I don't even need to touch my /cache at all.
I will post any other findings... info.. etc.. that I find.

your datadata folder is full most likely. You can try uninstalling some apps, or try running ng cache cleaner from market, or read this thread and try this tweak JT posted!
http://rootzwiki.com/topic/5635-problems-with-datadata-causing-force-closes-for-google-apps/
A novice question Im sure, but whats the best/easiest way to see how much free space is available on these partitions?
use the disk usage app from market.
Since 3.5 I can't use my TP for more than 10 minutes without a FC. Apps like autokiller memory optimizer and body fitness wont even open. I've uninstalled and reinstalled these apps with no luck. When this happens the whole TP freezes, ill post the FC message but I'm pretty sure it says something different... ill check.
Any CM7 settings thtat might help/cause this?
Download Rom Manager free, and run the fix permissions option, then reboot. Worth a try.
As for autokill apps, repeat after me, "Android is NOT windows". Task killers with newer versions of android will do more harm than good. Android manages memory differently than windows and will kill background apps when necessessary as memory is needed. Many apps that show up as running are really not taking up memory but are placeholders until they are called by another app. To prove this to yourself, go to manage applications and kill several apps then wait, they will restart almost immetiately but are not really using any space. Task killers will actually use more battery than would normally be used because those background apps are restarting.
If you are having constant FC's, the fix permissions routine would be the first step followed by wiping the cache. If you have installed any new apps recently, one of them may be causing a conflict. If you have Titanium Backup, you could try freezing those apps one at a time to see if that might be the case.
My installs of both cm7 a3, a3.5, and xron a2.8 have been free of the dreaded FC's but I always wipe all cache files and wipe date between installs then restore with TI (files only). I keep all app data in my box files in case I need it.

Not sure if it is wrong, just would like to get some explanation of this. Phone has bit less than 1GB ram available for apps and default behavior of Androuid should be to use it all for caching recently run proceses, because there is no difference if memory is free or taken - it uses same power.
I have Viper ROM 1.06 and using Nik3r kernel, tested with and without dataswap mod (128MB). Even tried to tweak Viper settings for minfree setting, using Multitasking ultimate profile. And still the same behavior. When I check available memory, it always sits around 750 used out of 980MB. Regardless what and how many apps I run.
Problem is, that when phone is not used for some time I see almost every time apps starting instead of fast switching from memory. Its mainly visible for me on FBReader, which I use to read ebooks every time I have little spare time. I pull phone from pocket, start FBReader and voila, it is starting from scratch loading book. Its 2-3s, but still. its relatively small app, shouldnt be killed most of the time thanks to system policies on free ram.
When I try to play with phone and run as many apps (start FBReader, home and run Chrome+load 2 tabs, run Camera, run Viber, run Tapatalk and back to FBReader) to force it to close my FBreader from memory, everything works fine and it swaps back in immediately. Even though checking Apps tab in settings shows memory usage about 750-800/980, not fully stuffed with cached apps (think its not showing correct numbers? Or not showing memory taken by apps in empty state?). But anyway. I give up, turn off my phone and let it be for some time. Then I check for example for SMS and would like to continue reading my book. And FBReader is loading as if it was closed. Why?
Seems to me like phone does cleaning of cached stuff in memory after some time when it is not used? Cant say precise when it happens, it just annoys me to see that system shows all the time around 750/980MB used and still is unable to keep my app in memory for longer period when it works fine if I test it directly.
Any ideas/tips/explanation?
Hi, I have the same issue with the fb messenger (chat heads)
I
Android still shut down and it doesn't restart...
Any idea ?
