Hello all,
just picked up a fascinate to tinker with while waiting for new phones too arrive . With an easy task in qpst you can tether via verizon mobile hotspot for free. Obtain QPST (don't ask me where to get it)
Install GalaxyS Drivers (they are floating around the forum)
Put phone in modem mode (setting, wireless, enable dial up)
Fire up QPST (youll see windows adding the driver etc blah blah)
Add port (should be USB in there)
Once you see your phone in qpst goto the start clients menu and start service programming.
hit read from phone (password is 000000)
tab over to M.IP, under profile 1 click edit.
Changed tethered NAI to [email protected]
Click write to phone,
phone will reboot, use mobile hotspot
NOTE: I am not responsible for any charges you may get, but you should be fine
EDIT: Please note if you ever reprogram your phone *228, then you need to perform this again.
If rooted can wireless tether app work? Thinking about upgrading soon, but not wanting to pay for something free now.
Sent from my CLEB Froyo Eris
technically this won't require root but yes i am rooted and using verizons app for AP mode instead of wireless tether for root users.
Is there an advantage to doing it this way rather than using wireless tether? Not being critical...just curious.
I didn't look into wifi tether for root much for the fascinate but by default it seems to use ad-hoc mode some may prefer AP mode also this helps those that don't wish to root.
Great point, having a norm connection would be nice. Got so used to ad -hoc. Thank-you for quick reply.

I was able to do this on the incredible via the phone. Anyway to access this on the fascinate? On inc I dialed a code into the dialer and changed setting

Also for the person who mentioned incredible, samsung does not have on phone pst like incredible.

Multiple devices and Infrastructure mode are not the same thing. Certain devices require infrastructure mode to connect, such as the PSP. Even though you can connect multiple devices to the phone through wifi, it still will not let you connect a PSP since the phone is identifying itself as a wifi device, not a wifi access point or router.

Is there a Wifi tether version that works on the x2? I'm rooted of course & supercharged & need something that isn't just ad-hoc. Already tried barnacle & the native app with phone toggle and so far its a bust. Is qpst an option?

I'm in the same boat, I used QSPT to get the dun out of my tethering app, but it kept getting replaced.

Sorry just read entire post
Yeah, that makes an ad-hoc network. Is there an option for infrastructure?
This version of wifi-tether works for my win7 nwtbook but not my vista laptop. What do I need to do for the qpst method? Did it in my fascinate by going in with dun enabled. Can't seem to find how to enable it in the x2.
Sent from my DROID X2 using XDA Premium App
As it stands the QPST don't work. as soon as you reboot it overwrites the change.
I use barnacle with no issue, rooted with v6.

The problem is barnacle make ad-hoc also.
really? no wifi-hotspot for us yet?
I see the VZW application on my phone, haven't tried it yet though, didn't sign up for it. I wonder do they just charge me for it if I was to use it? Or would they call me up & scold me first?

They wont scold you for trying it. But it won't work unless you sign up for the additional service which costs $25 or $29 per month (can't remember which).
Is there no root app that allows us to use the Droid X2 as a wifi tether without the extra monthly charge? I keep seeing references to others who say they are doing this, but no one seems to want to say exactly what app they are using.

Actually I just tried it and I can connect to the internet with my W7 laptop with that ad-hoc tether program running on my Droid X2. I'm sending this reply over that connection.
I guess, as implied earlier in the thread, W7 makes provisions for ad-hoc. Don't know about other versions of Windows. My Samsung Galaxy Tab cannot see the connection.
still looking for a hotspot instead of ad-hoc wireless tether though, got multiple wi-fi devices that I may want to connect...
I am interested in the infrastructure Wifi as well. I am attempting to connect a Color Nook to the DX2 and can't get it to recognize the ad-hoc network.
for the NC, you have to dload an adhoc wifi supplicant file. then you have to replace the existing wifi supplicant file w/ it and then reboot. your NC should now be able to see and connect to ad hoc networks.
google is your friend.

FWIW The Wifi Teather program works with the new 2nd Generation B&W nook (at least since firmware update 1.0.1 - don't know if it worked before). So now the ad-hoc wifi teather works with my laptop running Win7 and my completely stock nook. I'm happy
im assuming there is no solution yet. im still using the ad-hoc method for now. but i would love to see a true hotspot
I don't know why people don't understand that you specifically said infrastructure vs ad hoc. You can use the phone for infrastructure for free.
First use the hotspot app and wait for it to start up.
Hook up your computer and open your browser
when it takes you to verizons website, all is good.
go to your phones dialer and type in *#*#INFO#*#* or *#*#4636
select phone info
go down almost to the bottom and you will see a button that says "turn off radio"
Press this and wait 10 seconds and press it again to turn it back on.
Now when it regains 3g signal you should have internet access on your computer.
You may have to redo this a few times for it to work. It works for me 75% of the time. Sometimes it doesn't work but most of the time it does.
Good luck
Hi, so I'm currently using an unlocked Samsung i777 outside the US. I'm loving this phone except for the fact that wifi tethering is not working. Every time I try to enable it, it says mobile data not available or invalid sim.
I can use my sim's 3G/HSDPA connecton just fine and my sim has a data plan and I can even use tethering on other mobile phones so I'm assuming that AT&T locked down the wifi tethering or something. How can I make it work preferably without rooting since I managed to unlock this ohome without root?
If I do need to root, well what are the apps that I need to make wifi hotspot work? Thanks.

You need to root, and you actually need to REMOVE an app (TetheringManager2.apk) to make it work.
It's AT&T's bigbrotherware
I hope you're using a local Sim and not planning on tethering while roaming, that would be a heart attack inducing bill waiting for you when you come home!!

cannot tether after rooting and renamed TetheringManager2.apk
the file is there... i am in the same boat as you are. i bought an used i777.
you need to root the phone first, personally, i used Root Manager and located the file and renamed it (instead of deleting it)
BUT.. i still cannot tether :-( still getting the mobile data is not available or invalid SIM.
can anyone offer some insight to this issue ?

i tried to rename the file to something else, but did not get tethering to work.
i was mad and DELETED the file i renamed altogether and u know what - tethering works !
so i guess you will have to root the phone, DELETE the file, then you can get tethering to work.
have fun.
In the op it states she does not have root. Therefor what she wants to do is not possible. U need root to access the file she needs to remove.

UCLE5 remove the tetheringmanager.apk,is not work,open the wifi hostpot,setting is FC,why?
remove tether provisional app wifi hotspot still do not work EDIT:hotspot now work
hello everyone,
as the title shows I have remove the tether provision app with super manager as I can't find the tethering manager apk stated on this thread. Maybe it is on the stock GB rom I'am running stock ICS rom rooted and running on latest siyah kernel. When I tried to open wifi hotspot it just sits there unresponsive for several seconds then says "settings application stop working". I am on vacation here in the Philippines and using the local sim cards available here I have data on my phone but I can't share it on my other devices as the wifi hotspot is not functioning. I have searched several sites and install several root tethering apps to no avail. Any guide or help is greatly appreciated. Thnx
edit: I have now a functional wifi hotspot. I have downloaded FoxFi App from the market and it works. I have installed uninstalled reinstalled this app several times before but hangs and force closes upon activating the wifi hotspot. I have uninstalled the tether provision app on the root folder with Root Uninstaller as stated above. I don't know if it helps but when reinstalling the FoxFi App again, wifi hotspot on my phone now works. Though I just want to share as me myself badly needed this as my phone is not that big enough on surfing the net. Activating the phones native wifi hotspot is pretty sweet though.
2nd Edit: Though I just want to make it simple and share for everyone to know how do I make my wifi hotstpot work on stock at&t ics rom. This is a very simple step to make and works only if you are rooted. I am not responsible if you do something wrong with your phone. This do works for me..This is a guideline only for anyone wanting to have a wifi hotspot tethering on their phone as in my case running on stock at&t ics.
1. Download and install Unistaller Root app (or any root file manager app) and FoxFi tethering app ( other app may also work) from the google play market.
2. Open Uninstaller Root App and allow it SU permission then open system apps.
3. Navigate thru it and uninstall tethering provision apk.
4. Open FoxFi Tethering app , wifi hotspot should now work. Enjoy..... Do not use the native wifi hotspot from your phone as it will not work.
FYI: As in my case FoxFi will not work if you still have the Tethering Provision Apk in your phone it will just hang and forced closes when opening the app.
Hope anybody running Stock ICS will find this useful. Have a Great day....
How can I grant "SU" permission to the app?
My phone is not rooted but unlocked.
I am deadly in need of tethering. Please help me out. Thanks.

You must be rooted to obtain su permission. Also, if your signature is correct, you are in the wrong forum. This is the forum for Galaxy S2, and you have the S3.

If your phone doesn't already include the option to tether in your settings, download the app from the link above. Once downloaded you're pretty much good to go from there... Sorry for not elaborating more, but I'm typing this on my phone... When I get to a PC in the morning I'll type up something more formal/informal.
Quick question for reference, what rom are you using?

They blocked tethering through user agent sniffing . Chrome seems to be the only user agent being blocked at the moment . If you use internet explore it will work or you could use "user agent switcher" extension for chrome .

Really? Because I just typed up this post on my PC in Google Chrome (without the "user agent switcher" extension) and I am currently tethered to my Vibrant. I've also tested Internet Explorer, which also works while tethered to my Vibrant... I'm using the app I mentioned above, although the built in wireless tether feature also works for me. Then again, I am using a custom rom, so that could explain why it works for me. Anywho... landrian18, you want to know how to get tether on your device? OK, I'll show you how to do it both on an ICS rom and with the "WiFi Tether for Root Users" app.
On an ICS rom:
Note- I'm not positive this is the same method you would use on euphoria as I'm on a different ICS rom, however, you can still try and see. It should be the same.
1. Go into your phones system settings, this can be accomplished by either locating the settings icon in your app drawer/home screen or by clicking the leftmost physical touch button on your phone.
2. Under WIRELESS & NETWORKS click More....
3. Click Tethering & portable hotspot.
4. Click on Portable Wi-Fi hotspot.
Note 2- Your phone is now acting like a Wi-Fi hotspot and is accessible/detectable by almost all wireless devices except other Android smart phones. If you would like to encrypt your Wi-Fi hotspot click Configure Wi-Fi hotspot and change the password. You can also rename the Wi-Fi hotspot by changing the SSID from AndroidAP (or whatever the default is) to whatever you'd like.
On the app:
Note- These steps are written under the assumption that you have already installed the "WiFi Tether for Root Users" application.
1. Locate and launch the WiFi Tether for Root Users application.
2. Done. That's all you got to do.
Note 2- If you want to customize the SSID, password (remove password), encryption type, etc. Simply go into the apps settings.
IF YOU HAVE ANY QUESTIONS, PLEASE, FEEL FREE TO ASK.
I'm on a custom ROM I've been tethering forever but now I get redirected to TMobiles tethering advertisement page . Others have recently complained about this on XDA . It only works of I use user agent switcher .
Here is the thread www.forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=840423

Just a quick question, are you sure you have the vibrant, and not the galaxy s 4g? There is no stock gingerbread on the vibrant...
Side note, I've used easy tether (great alternative to pda net) along with firefox for a few years and have never seen the t mobile warning. Used it on stock and rooted g1 and vibrant with never any issues.
Does an incoming call drop your usb internet connection and does it charge while connected?
Unless I'm wrong the sgh-t959v is a vibrant as observed from the label. I updated via kies to gingerbread rom from mfg that why I called it stock, not a custom rom.
T959v isn't the same as our t959 Vibrants.
Ours didn't have a GB update via Kies. Be careful even using Kies.
-I'm not sure there is much in our Vibrant thread that applies to t959v at all. Is the t959v the Samsung Blaze 4g? I must research this when I have time.
note: don't modify your phone with anything you see here at all until someone with more knowledge chimes in. I think its a bad idea.
T959v is the galaxy s 4g! T959 is the vibrant. The vibrant never got the gingerbread update, galaxy s 4g did.
Easy tether does charge while in use, phone calls I don't know, never tried.

Chances are low. Extremely low. I've never been notified once on Android. Even if they detect you they are obligated to send you a written warning before they charge you for extra features. I know this from unauthorized tethering on my iPhone.

You're definitely confused, so I'll help.... The ATT Hotspot app is to connect your phone to the wireless hotspot ATT provides for free at various locations so you don't use your data plan
Wireless tethering is to connect another device (laptop, WiFi tablet, another phone, etc) to use your data plan on your phone wirelessly, turning your phone into a router, receiving data and broadcasting an SSID like your WiFi at home / work does
Make sense?

So seems like you must paying for service. This app you using ( stock Mobile Hotspot) dose not work for free with At&t phones if you do not paying for service. I just try and asking me to call 611 for activating tethering.
Thanks OP. works great here.:good:

hrmmm, i guess i need to figure that out... im new to att, just switched when getting this phone. all i know is i am on their mobile share plan with unlimited talk & text, then we pay for the 4g data plan. so maybe the fee is built into the 4gb share data plan.
edit: yea just did some reading and because i am on a mobile share plan there is no fee. i guess that solves y i was confused to begin with on why the op posted this option for free tethering when i can use the built-in for free to tether.
