X10FlashTool: xRecovery Installation on Win7 x64 - XPERIA X10 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I've done lots of reading and still can't find a thread for this one.
I'm running Win7 Home Premium x64 and the latest version of the FlashTool (v0.2.4).
Everything works like a charm, except for the xRecovery Installation. That part freezes up.
And speaking of the xRecovery, the Install Fix only works for me sometimes on my X10.
On my X10 I'm running v2.1 Build v2.0.A.0.504. Basically when the install doesn't work, I end up uninstalling the SuperUser App (after giving ROOT permissions to xRecovery Installer), and then it installs just fine.
Only once was I able to get the xRecovery installer to work once (without uninstalling SuperUser App). And xRecovery wasn't even given ROOT permissions yet. It all happened on the fly, I'm guessing ... the way it was supposed to. Haven't found a way to reduplicate this yet.
So, anyone else find a fix for these issues?
P.S. I can accomplish what I want with my own methods, but I really like the easy X10FlashTool method the best :-D SOOOOO much faster.

install superuser & busybox from market.
and install xRecovery like a normal .apk with one of the file manager apps.
xRecovery

Ok, yah I was going with the version of BusyBox that came with either the 2.1 image or came with the FlashTool.
Just to be clear, I haven't actually had any problems installing the APK for xRecovery... which turns out was version 1.15 and the latest is 1.17 (hah oops, silly me). So much for being lazy and not re-downloading the BusyBox App. My bad for that. (Good thing I finally figured out how to get to my apps and back them up via Root Explorer!)
Just to be clear, I never had a problem actually installing the xRecovery APK. That works fine, it's just opening the xRecovery installer (after installing the APK) and then running it, i get the 3 red circles with a slash, instead of 3 green checks. Did you get that from my first post? Or did it sound like something else?

Just use busybox from market and problem solved

if you're installed busybox from somewhere else, that's the problem.
install updated busybox from market.
and problem solved.
you should get green arows.
reboot, tap back button few times and you're good to go.

Alright
Thanks guys! That definitely makes sense.

[Q] Help needed to upgrade from 1.6

Hi,
I have a problem with upgrading and wondered if anyone could help, please. I have searched the forum and couldn't find an exact answer to my problem.
In November my wife broke the usb on her X10i and hasn't been able to upgrade to 2.1 because of Sony's lack of OTA updates.
Is it possible to root and flash 2.1 on the X10i using the SDcard only instead of connecting the phone to the PC through usb?
What is the best way to root and the best 2.1 rom to use when flashing a pay monthly O2 X10?
Thanks for any help in advance.
The model is an X10i
Firmware 1.6 (obviously)
baseband 1.0.16
Kernel 1.6.29
Build R1FA016
1. Search & download Z4 root to your sd card (use google, can't miss it)
2. Download BUSYBOX from the market
3. Follow the instructions on this link to install XRECOVERY:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=859571
After these your phone should be ready to be flashed, it's just a matter of what you want to flash it to.
Hope these help.
Thank you, I'll try your suggestions.
A standard 2.1 rom that works on an O2 x10i is fine to flash to, doesn't have to be customised or fancy. Any suggestions on the best and most stable rom to go for?
Cheers.
I think you will be fine with the Generic 2.0.2.A.0.24 build. (Thought I had the link to the zip file but I must have deleted it, I used the flashtool exclusively for 2.1 and I used xrecovery when I started to use froyo.) I've only had my x10 for a little over 2 months, flashed it to 2.1 after a few days of getting it then I switched to 2.2 betas since the new year but I was happy with that 2.1 version the short time I had it.
Thank you very much
A couple more annoying newbie question though.
I rooted the phone but couldnt install busybox from the market, does Z4 root install it when it roots the phone?
I can't move the three xrecovery files from my sdcard into the system/bin folder on the phone. Do I need to install Root Explorer from the Market to access and write the 3 files onto the phone system folder?
Thanks.

No problem I have a few things I still need to learn myself so no worries.
First, when you run z4 root does it say that its rooted?
Did you get an error when installing busybox or are you saying you can't find it in the market?
No, z4 doesn't install busybox.
Yes, you'll need to install root explorer before you can push any file to the system/bin folder/ on the phone.
Z4root worked, i chose permanant root, when I try to install busybox I get the message
Your Phone is rooted.
Busybox was not found.
The app failed either because your device is not nand unlocked or we were unable to remount.
I installed Titanium backup to check the phone is rooted and it says it could not require root priviliges either.

Sounds like z4 root didn't work since 2 different apps does not see your phone as being rooted. Uninstall z4 then search and download for Universal Androot 1.6, that's the other root app I've used in the past.
Thanks.
Phone rooted, busybox and root explorer installed.
Xrecovery files moved.
Can't get into the xrecovery menu at startup
My rooted Orange San Francisco is looking like a good buy now. I'll give up on messing with the phone. Thanks for all your help and time, my wife gets a new phone in year and it will probably take me that long to get it working and for SE to release 2.2

hi there, dont give up now, you are getting so close!
you dont really need to use xrecovery menu at all. the idea for you would be the following:
1. root the 1.6 phone - done
2. install titanium backup/my backup pro and backup your data - done (i think)
3. download the 2.1 flashtool from the following thread - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=683793 (choose the appropriate ROM - if unsure ask questions! i would recommend the latest X10a_2_1_A_0_435_GLOBAL)
4. run the flash tool and update phone to 2.1
5. reroot phone with z4root and reinstall backup software
6. recover all backups and you are now done!
i should clarify also.....the reason i have recommended you NOT to use the xRecovery menu is fairly simple. If you are not planning on constantly flashing new ROMs and booting into other ROMS, then its simply not necessary for you.
The benefits of xRec are that you can take a complete backup of your phone, flash it with something else and then recover the backup when you are done. Its a simple way to flash new roms quickly, but as i said, not really necessary for you.
Flashtool is very easy to use, all the instructions are provided on the screen, and it is done in 5 minutes also, there are lots and lots of tutorials posted around the place too.
good luck!

You are on point MRTIM, I can't argue with what you said. But like he mentioned on his first post, his wife broke the USB on the phone that's why he is doing it the long way.
@Scribbling Are you pressing the back button on the phone as soon as you see the white SE screen?
If you are still having trouble there is another way. One thing I failed to mention is the new version of xrecovery 0.3 is an actual APK file. That means you can just download it to your PC, transfer to your SD card, browse to the location on your phone then tap to install it. If you need a browser you can use ASTRO FILE MANAGER from the Market which is free.
PLEASE NOTE AND I CAN NOT STRESS THIS ENOUGH. If you are going to try and reinstall the xrecovery APK package, make sure to uninstall BUSYBOX then pull any xrecovery files that you already pushed to the phone prior to installing the v0.3 APK.
Let us know if you have any other questions. I agree with MRTIM, why stop now? You are almost there.
Thanks.
Broken Usb is the annoying bit
I'll try installing Xrecovery as an apk.
Ugh..... Xrecovery could not be installed to this device. I'll try Xrec 0.2 later, if I can find the will.

[Q] Which custom rom should I choose?

I must admit, I am a complete noob when it comes both to linux, android and smartphones. I know a great deal about computers, but only recently bought the X10 mini pro, since it wasn't that expensive and I wanted a qwerty-keyboard.
Anyway, the reason I have decided to install a custom rom is mainly the fact that SE have confirmed that they will not give X10 mini/mini pro Froyo, so therefore I now understand I have to start using custom roms.
The current wishes I have for installing a custom 2.1 rom is the following:
-Apps2SD
-Multitouch
-Change themes
I have currently decided to go for the iridium rom. Is that a good decition? I've read lots about "JiT" but I don't exactly know what it is. For example, can I install JIT, then install a custom rom (such as iridium) and JIT will still be "installed" and working?
Many of the tutorials here are great, in the way that it makes noobs like me able to actually install custom roms, however, the tutorials are alot like:
STEP 1) Pick a ftl/i20x model and install with flash tool.
STEP 2) Use one of the following builds: 2.1.A.x353.3531.43 (I'm like... WTF IS FTL?! WHAT BUILD SHOULD I CHOOSE?? WHAT'S THE DIFFERENCE?!?!? :/) lol,

Trust me.. When I say I have tried for hours getting xrecovery to work, that includes rebooting 20-30 times, each time pressing the back-button from vibration and probably like 3 times per second, until phone is fully booted. No results. Is there no other way to check if xrecovery actually IS installed?
Ok, I've seen some problems with the placing of the three files...
Where have U placed dem?
You need to COPY them from sdcard til SYSTEM, Then MOVE to system/bin.
That step is very important to make it work.. if you've just copied them from sdcard til system/bin , that could be the problem.. ?

But now the strangest thing happened... after my phone crashed and I repaired it, I log into market with my google account, and all applications (such as "Root Explorer") that I've paid for in the past, won't get downloaded. It just starts download but nothing happens, download freezes at: "downloading".
Any ideas what's causing this?
JiT is enabled as part of installing Iridium ROM.
Alright, I did a factory reset to fix the problem. With market. Followed indtructions precisely, three times now...xrecovery never starts up.
Anything else I need to configure? I notice that when i reboot, go /system/bin the xrecovery.tar file is gone.
EDIT: No it is still there, with the same permissions.
It doesn't seem like anyone else have any issues running xrecovery, so I don't get it!!

When I try to install xrecovery with the aapk-installer, the three icons just turn red. Judging from others who had this happen, it was due to an outdated busybox version.
Anyway, I ran Titanium Backup to update busybox, but that only got me 1.15. How can i get 1.18? It is not on the market

I dont think it is due to busy box version. i have busy box 1.15.3, and i have x recovery and custom rom CM 6.3.2.1 installed.
Are you moving the file and then copying them to them to the system folder? and is the root explorer in rw.
Thread which i followed: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=878426
peace.
I move files to /system/. Change permittion. Copy to /system/bin/. Reboot. Hammer back button, nothing.
The unified xrecovery-apk installer gives a clue I think, cause the install fails. I just wantt to find out why. I am rooted. I do mount r/w..
Sent from my U20i using XDA App
You need to copy them THEN move them, from your post above you are moving them then copying. Its important to do it the right way round.
Now I copied them to /system/. Change permittions. MOVE them to /system/bin/. Still no luck.
I am confused about all the talk about Busybox version, instructions about "DO NOT UPDATE BUSYBOX ONCE YOU'VE INSTALLED XRECOVERY!!" etc. but if I had done that wrong, xrecovery should just cause the phone to freeze at the SE-logo, right?
Atm, nothing at all happens at the SE-logo.
I think I'm going to use SEUS to wipe it all clean again, then just root it with superoneclick from PC, download Root Explorer, and try this again. My build atm is: 2.1.1.A.0.6 btw.
Thank you all so much for the help! I got it working now Had to go back to factory settings, then just root with superoneclick (NOT try to install xrecovery) then I installed xrecovery manually, after installing busybox through Titanium Backup.
Haha, now the only issue is that I can't find the flashtool from: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=825664 I made afew posts here and there asking if someone could re-upload or post a mirror two days ago, but no replies. Does anyone have the GUI-version of flashtool?
EDIT: Nevermind. An angel uploaded a mirror of that too! =) Thanks everyone, now I will try my luck with the iridum rom!

[Q] Swype 3.0

Is there any way we can get the new swype update incorporated into some of the ROMs? Or do we have to download it separately?

I would imagine it will get incorporated into future ROMs or included in an update to a current ROM. But if you want it now you will have to download it separately. Before you can download 3.0 you will have to switch your default keyboard to another keyboard then using a file explorer app such as root explorer go in and delete these four files: /system/app/swype.apk, /data/data/com.swype.android.inputmethod, /dbdata/databases/com.swype.android.inputmethod, and /system/lib/libswypecore.so
swype 3.0 beta has drm/licensing stuff in it..so it will expire at some point if we incorporate as is into the roms (comrom/etc)
im hopeful we can get that stuff removed as was done for 2.29 that we were using in tsm roms
Okay cool. Thanks for the replies
Spent some time trying to get swype 3b installed.
The installer apparently requires the old version to be removed. So I did (Titanium). The installer went all the way through the download process, but actually installing gave me "was not installed." Gee, what a helpful error.
So I tried downloading an apk from the web and got the same error. So I tried using root explorer to install the apk manually (including setting permissions and changing owner). It FC'd repeatedly after reboot. So I removed it.
Then I tried adb install. That didn't work either. Then, realizing that Titanium didn't have a backup for my original Swype, I tried installing the v2 apk via adb, but that doesn't work either.
Ugh. Now I don't have Swype at all! Any ideas? Can someone tell me if there's a unique version for this phone or something?

Me too on the Swype problem. I had 3.0 working on the CM7 Alpha that jt built but that was a little to buggy so I switched to CommROM 2.0. Because of the way Swype is integrated into CommROM, it can't be easily replaced. Would love for someone to point me in the right direction on this.
I'm pretty sure I read somewhere that you're not supposed to download swype beta if you have a phone that comes with swype installed. I'm not sure why but I read that it won't work.
Choose a different keyboard. Uninstall old swype. Reboot, then install new beta.
Worked for me.
Yeah, I struggled with that issue last night (getting "was not installed" with 3.0 after removing 2)... but don't fret, it turns out the solution (which I discovered by mistake) is to literally just reboot your phone before installing 3.0. Hurr.
Keep in mind you still do have to manually delete /system/lib/libswypecore.so using Root Explorer or the like after uninstalling Swpye 2 via TB -- otherwise you will have problems.
Is there an echo in here?
And I did not have to manually delete any files and everything is working fine.
I used Titanium to delete the original, then used the installer without problems. That said, I don't like 3.0 and went back to the old version.
Working!
After seeing your replies, I deleted the lib file. I also ran
adb shell pm list packages
and found com.swype.android.inputmethod was still installed:
adb uninstall com.swype.android.inputmethod
then reboot.
then used swype little installer package.
and now it works!
Easy Peasy Lemon Squeezy
Delete using Titanium, reboot, install using the standard Swype installer seems to work.
Keeps getting better with every release!!!
I had been having some issues with the latest Swype beta's auto-correction, in that when I was touch-typing for non-dictionary words (like acronyms, etc.), the auto-correction was doing its job and was 'auto-correcting'; but of course, I didn't want these words corrected! (I guess I was still operating under Swype's old rules which were when you touch-typed, it always assumed you were entering the correct spelling of whatever you had typed). So I turned off automatic auto-correct, and now I just have the word suggestion bar. This process seems to be working much better for me now.

Are there any other file managers besides root explorer that take advantage of root access?
I'm sure root explorer is good and all, I just don't feel like forking over 3 or 4 bucks or whatever for it - I don't like paying for apps, it's just one more thing that isn't a free download if you have to reflash your ROM or do a factory reset or something. Learned that lesson a few years ago with an 2nd gen iPod Touch.
That being said, there's plenty of free file managers out there, will any of them perform root operations such as deleting Swype.apk manually?
Once you purchase an app it is linked to your gmail acct. If you wipe or reflash it's still your's. Save yourself the headache and just buy root explorer.

BusyBox by STEPHEN & JRummy16 {confirmed} nukes WiFi, Bluetooth & Cellular Data
I had what appears to be the latest update to BusyBox by STEPHEN (STERICSON) nuke my WiFi, Bluetooth, and cellular data.
I was able to restore to an earlier backup which restored functionality. Once I installed BusyBox by STEPHEN (STERICSON) and went into it and ran it's internal install/update the above was nuked again.
Is there a different BusyBox we can use?
I saw 1 other person with this same issue... Anyone else?
How do we confront STEPHEN with this and see if he knows and can fix it before we all nuke our ATRIX's
update... I just created a recovery of my fully working system, went into Play, got BusyBox by STEPHEN, opened it and installed it, restarted phone and guess what....
WiFi will not connect to anything, Bluetooth will not come on and Cellular Data does not work.
CONFIRMED [latest, June 15, 2012] BusyBox by STEPHEN (STERICON) and the one by JRummy16 kills ALL data connections!
Are you replacing/symlinking all applets to Busybox? Do this can have the issue that you mentioned.
Also, have you tried installing to xbin rather than /bin?
I downloaded, installed, open and let it finish scanning and then use the Install, no changes to location or clicking any boxes.
I've done it this way with every update I receive.
What changed?
Nothings changed, however there was a bug with version 8.0 of my application which caused everything to be symlinked to busybox. This caused issues, like your describing, on some devices. However this was fixed with version 8.1 and above. Unfortunately, In order to resolve the problem, you need to reflash your rom which will restore the system applets that should not have been replaced by the symlinks to busybox.
After getting everything working, you should be able to use Busybox as normal to upgrade busybox.
Nope.... Reflashed the ROM... add the latest BusyBox, run it and bang. Once I restart all 3 fail.
I've had to flash it 3 times with this and the last couple of times I just made a recovery image before trying it.
Are there any alternative applications of this that we could try on the ATRIX?
Can I ask a silly question? Why are you trying to update it if the version you know works is not messing with things? Kind of a "if it ain't broke" thing to me.
Does this happen with all version of Busybox provided by myself, or does it only happen with, let's say, 1.20.1?
Whatever the latest upgrade is, as far as I can tell 8.4 as listed in Play. I also tried it with the other BusyBox by JRunmmy16 with the same results.
I would load an older one and check, if I had the apk to load.
...to answer pre4speed's "silly question"... Updates are out there for a purpose, I should hope, and I take advantage of them when offered unless I know of an issue and then I wait for the next update that we hope resolves it.
I don't mean the version of the installer, rather the version of Busybox. Select an older version from the dropdown and see if that works.
OK... I reloaded your BusyBox and restarted. No issues.
I have not run any of the internal "Install"
Question, do I need to run the internal install process?
I will come back to this later, got activities to attend tonight.
Stephen... Thanks for the help with this, I know I am not the only ATRIX user with this issue.

I agree also with that. I am by no means saying you shouldn't try. And I guess by you testing the new version, you found a bug, reported it, and got a resolution. So Im truly sorry if I stepped on toes, I didn't think of that when asking. I do the same thing.
Lesson learned... pass it on.
... running good. Looks like as long as you do NOT open BusyBox and run its' internal install process everything stays working.
Lesson learned.
@pre4speed No sweat. I've "always" open utilities that I download and "ASS u ME" that you should be able to run whatever they offer inside them. My thinking is that if it is there run it... If it is a buried run command, I shy away until I find out more. As to BusyBox, all the prior installs I go into it and run the "Install" with no dire results. hence the thread...
Simply having the app installed does not upgrade Busybox, so you are accomplishing nothing by not running the install process.
This doesn't help fix the problem that you were/are having.
I don't know if it helps for debugging, but I've had the same problem today that the OP had. I'm on Nottachtrix 1.2.6.
Busybox installer showed up in my notification bar that an upgrade was available; I accepted it this morning (that is, I hit "Install" from within the Busybox installer app) and immediately my wifi, mobile data, and bluetooth were all dead. In addition, none of my root programs (Root Explorer, LBE Privacy, ROM toolbox, etc) would recognize that they had root access.
I then found this thread later this afternoon, and wiped/reflashed my rom which included the old Busybox version. That fixed the problem as you indicated. So far I have not re-installed Busybox installer; things are up and running with proper data access and all programs recognizing root, so I'm gonna hold here with everything running.
Are we talking about my installer, or Jrummy?
Also, Did you install 1.20.1 or an older one?
Could you test a new version if I provided it?
I will test it out... It does no good having an app that is "required" by other utilities if it nukes the phone.
Link me in a PM and I'll load it and tell you what happens.
Wish I'd have seen this thread before I tried to upgrade it.
Someone asked what the reason would be to upgrade BusyBox though. It can fix some Webtop2SD FC issues.
I'm currently with the same problem but on the Aura firmware. If i try to run any of the both apps to update my busybox it fails and leave it uninstalled.
I try the last version and a few older ones (1.19.4, 1.19, 1.18.4, 1.18, 1.14.3). Also i tried the Superuser updater to get the lastest su bin and it also fails when it tries to install busybox.
Right now on the JRummy16 installer it says:
Your device is rooted
Busybox Location: N/A
Busybox Version: N/A
System Storage: 39.78MB
Phone Model: MB860
ROM Version Aura 1.2.2.2

webtop2sd force close using the default busybox that come with the last rom build, thats why i tried to change the version.
Same here, I've tried to repair webtop2sd, using both installers, with 1.20 & 1.20.1 (didn't testes older one) but then system is unable to do any su or even use shell; none of the wireless connections work. I'll try older one. I'm on nottachtrix 1.3 with wraithdu's 1.19.4 busybox in /bin
Tab+ got nuked today Having hard time finding right firmware now to fix this. Wish I just left it alone and didn't try to update.

[Q] I have fully rooted archos stock os, r/w mountable firmware version 2.4.83, why?

Ok, so i allmostly never boot archos firmware from when i installed urukdroid (second time after a full tab format) and i just boot it from times to times to update and thats it, today i booted it up and saw i had Superuser in the apps list, so i opened it and i saw it had a binary installed, and i was like "what on earth?" so i played a bit more, installed market, updated su, couldnt update su binarry whit superuser app, so i installed SuperSU and that let me install its binary and replace the superuser one, and after i tryed installing some root apps, first was root explorer, and yah.......i saw i have no option to unmount system, so it allways stays r/w even if i mount "/" as r/o, thats really odd in my opinion, but whatsoever, after that i installed chainfire app and installed the chainfire driver and well......it worked, so my question in this moment is how on earth did i root my archos, the first thing that came into my mind was archangel, but i didnt have that app installed, lol, just stock apps and superuser, and also archanger as far as i know didnt let u update your archos after rooting, or isnt that so?
Anyway the only theory that makes some logic in my mind is this: i had firmware 2.0.71 (or what the the version required for archangel was), then i installed archangel and permarooted, then i have no ideea why but i uninstalled archangel and left only superuser, and that allready sounds stupid to me, and i have also no ideea how i had no error when doing ota update, cause i read again and again on the archangel thread and for some it gave update package incorrect or something like that, now i really wonder if there is a way to root the archos whitout sde by installing the required firmware version for archangel, permarooting whit archangel and updating, i think itd help people who are new to this tab if we would test and say if it is so, cause to say the truth even i kept the archos unrooted for a while till i got really angry at not haveing root cause i was afraid of loosing warranty...............also sorry if such a thing has been posted, but i searched, and except the archangel post i cant find anything about rooting the stock fw, and im just courious cause i read archangel wont work on newer firmware...........so back to my question: how did i get root in the latest stock firmware version on my archos?
