Dell 318/319/339 Gingerbread Notification Bar (Updated March 25) - Streak 5 Themes and Apps

Disclaimer: I am not responsible for any harm done to your phone, proceed at your own risk. Tested personally on 319 and 339, tested by The Jack Of Clubs on 318.
318 users, please make a nandroid backup before flashing. 319/339 users since you cannot make a nandroid backup, please copy the framework-res.apk and services.odex files from /system/framework/ and store in a safe place (preferably on your computer).

Instructions on how to install.
1. 318 users made a nandroid backup. 319/339 users make a backup of your framework-res.apk and services.odex. This can be done several ways including...
a) Using root explorer navigate to /system/framework/ and copying framework-res.apk and services.odex to a safe location on your sdcard
b) using adb: in command prompt cd to the location of adb and type (without quotes) "adb pull /system/framework/framework-res.apk" then move this file to a safe location on your computer, repeat for services.odex.
2. Download the appropriate zip that is attached to this post and place it in the root of your sdcard
3. Boot your streak into recovery (either Clockwork or Streakmod)
4. Once into recovery flash the zip file and then reboot.
5. Your phone may take slightly longer to boot the first time.
If for some reason your phone hangs endlessly at the dell logo/boot animation or enters a boot loop then reboot back into recovery and either restore your backup or push the framework-res.apk and services.odex backups using adb.
(All icons taken from the framework-res.apk on a friend's t-mobile g2 running cm7 so all credit should really go to the cyanogenmod team and google)

neat. you should get it working for 318. and if the clock worked, id prolly do it. and also get rid of the carrier text.

I think I have figured out the clock color. I will test when I get home later. If you or someone else with the 318 version want to copy your framework-res.apk from your /system/framework folder and attach it to this thread I could easily make this for the 318 version as well.

db.tt/KEBcj3S there you go. im using the performance fix at http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=848487 not sure if that brings a modded framework.

I will have a look at that tomorrow night and see what I can do. Hopefully the 318 will be more kind when it comes to clock color!

Nice work thanks for this

A quick update. I have finally, after many google searches, found where to change the clock color. I should get that taken care of tonight as well as making this for everyone who runs 318 (thanks to The Jack of Clubs for sharing his framework files with me). I will also make update.zip's to make installation easier.
Look for an update late tonight if you are interested, around 1am Mountain Time or hopefully sooner depending on when I can get home from work.

Notification bar complete! zip's attached

im getting stuck with the endless boot loop animation thing. i restored my backed up files.
heres what i have from 318 on my phone.
http://db.tt/KEBcj3S framework-res.apk
http://db.tt/1MfWTlm services.jar
http://db.tt/Y6gOliN services.odex

In order to narrow down the problem will you try something for me?
if you extract the framework-res.apk from the 318 zip, put it in the same folder on your computer as adb and boot into recovery. Then open a command prompt to the folder containing adb and the .apk (on your computer) and type these commands, each line followed by enter:
adb shell
mount /system/
exit
adb push framework-res.apk /system/framework/
then reboot your phone.
that way I'll know if its the framework-res.apk or the services.odex that is causing the problem (my guess is that it's the framework-res that's the problem, which is an easier fix)

yep, that was the file. im still getting boot loops (sounds like a rip off cereal). after restoring framework-res.apk, i pushed services.odex, it booted, and gave me the white clock.

Cool, I ran into that when I was making the framework-res.apk for 319 and is probably due to some messed up xml. Will get that fixed tonight.

alright cool.

New 318 zip uploaded, if it doesnt work I will be shocked

Just tried on 318 and got stuck at the boot animation. Bummer...

Sorry to anyone who has tried the 318 zip only to be disappointed. I just uploaded a new zip which I am even more confident should work.

works great now. thanks and good job.
you can tell from the image below, my launcher is different but themed to look similar, the pixel desity/dpi is different (naturally on the streak), i just dont get the gmail notification icon from gingerbread, and i have 3g written instead of H.

Yeah I changed the h to 3g. And to get the gingerbread gmail and sms notifications you have to modify the gmail and mms apks...which I'll probably do at some point
Sent from my Dell Streak Froyo v.319

ah. i like having the H. you can turn it off and only have the 3G icon by changing (or adding it if its not there in certain builds) ro.build.FEATURE_HSPA_DATA_ICON=1 to 0 in /system/build.prop . and you dont need to modify the gmail apk, it wont update in the market and soon we will have froyo anyways.

hi again. i just recently dumped the official rom for steves streakdroid rom for alot more performance. it includes a gingerbread theme. its very complete from the lock screen sliders to the ui elements. one thing it has that i really dont like is this weird battery percentage icon thing. its ugly and doesnt go well with the surrounding icons. i was wondering if you can replace the battery icon for this as well. thanks in advance. the framework-res.apk is at http://db.tt/KEBcj3S

[REQ]boot animation from Android OS 1.0

Im looking for the boot animation for OS 1.0. Can anyone help me out?
I think if you remove the bootanimation.zip from your system media file when you boot up you get the basic old school boot animation. Its basically just the word "android" with some metallic looking effects.

That sounds like the 1.5 (or 1.6) boot animation. The 1.0 animation can be seen at around 1:30 of this video:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q2eh46U0KSo
Ha ha, I would like to have that old animation back
Maybe you can download the Android 1.0 system image for the SDK emulator, though I think Google stopped hosting anything below 1.5. Of course, you could also find an old ROM on XDA for the HTC Dream like JesusFreke's root ROM and take the animation out of there.

Have you tried renaming it to a .zip and unzipping it? or just trying to open it in winrar/7-zip at all?
Just a guess, but most of the time obscure .*whatever* extensions are just zip files renamed
I'm the guy from the G1 forums
And yeah, I tried to rename the *.nbh to a *.zip. No dice.
I then tried to use Emulator, but anything below Cupcake is non-existant.
So finally I gave up and dropped the G1 back to the RC29 build, had to re-root it. Problem is, I am now searching every folder to find out where this boot animation is. And yes, I have checked the /system/media (only has Audio) and there is nothing in the /data/ folder, so the two common places are out the window.
I have yet to give up, but that's because the girlfriend is baby sitting. I have two more hours to try and find this thing before I call it quits for the evening.
EDIT: Apparently there's an archive of all the old SDK packages. This interests me. So I am going to do an install of the first 1.0 SDK (not the Beta Builds) and try to get the ball rolling.

Speaking of satan....Thanks bro.
OK, so you're hosed with your request. Apparently, the boot animation is locked until at least Cupcake. So I can get you the Cupcake boot animation no sweat. But when I flashed my G1 back down to stock 1.0 there is no way to run Super User on it. You have root access, however when running something like Terminal Emulator and type "SU" you'll still get permission denied errors even though you have root access. Lame, I know.
So for giggles, I adb pulled every file from the root of the phone. No dice. There is no animations, period. Even searching every friggin' *.png file, there is nothing there for the boot animation. I can flash a new boot animation to the phone, but all that does is mask the original one, which is hidden somewhere in the *.nbh file. However, either I am not smart enough, or there is no way to do it as of yet, but I cannot get into the *.nbh file, period.
So I figured "OK, I'll try an emulator". That also failed, as the earliest emulator I can find is the emulator for Cupcake. So I then tried to use the emulator to flash a different ROM, which failed because as it reboots it goes back to stock Cupcake. Which is lame (they should really have a save state or something).
The next step I tried was downloading an older version of the Android SDK. Again, nothing available to me until Cupcake. I could have possibly loaded it in Eclipse, but I don't have Eclipse and don't prefer to have Eclipse, and I doubt that it would have made a difference since searching every folder in the SDK packs turned up nothing. I even loaded the SDK packs on my Mac, just in case there was a different set of files. Nothing.
Since I'm still on 1.0 I did try to do an ADB Shell, but any command gives me permissions issues. It's probably because of the root issue with the stock image. I don't really know, I just know I can't do it.
So my final attempt was that I downloaded a *.nbh explorer for the Windows 7 phones, but it doesn't work because of the signing issues.
Ultimately, you're not going to be getting the boot animation from me. I've tried and failed Sorry man. Good luck though!

Its just a zip file, so it needs to be put in /system/media folder and then change permissions to look like this:

If only I was skilled enough with photo editing software...
Nice work though zul8er!

UOT theming

As part of my guide, I'm writing up instructions on how to use the UOT Kitchen.
Anyway, I am but one man and I have real-world constraints on my time so if anyone else has successfully used it, can they please post here detailing which mods they used and how they manually installed the files - especially what permissions they needed to apply.
Thanks.

there you go with permissions for each of the files...
now the rest is trying... you wont brick you phone with the right permissions if you only use the kitchen.
I know that's the permissions required for framework-res.apk, I had kind of guessed it would be the same for SystemUI.apk.
It was more the other files the Kitchen spits out - like the fonts (that could be it, I'm not sure).
As for not bricking my phone, I know that - I've spent most of the day trying to make the Kitchen work and having to re-flash my handset to recover it.
So I'm not worried, it's more the hassle of having to check it all myself - especially when there are some of the mods I'm not personally interested in.
I too learned my lesson. You learn from mistakes and I had to either go on safe mode or use seus to fix my arc to factory settings. What I do now to avoid semi-brick.
* Create a folder in sd..i named it kitchen.
* Copy what ever you made in UOT KITCHEN in that kitchen folder
* With root explorer..copy the folder KITCHEN from SD to your ROOT
* Open the Kitchen set your permission for each files you need. sample systemui.apk
* Move the file to the correct folder and Yes to overwrite.
* You can delete that copied KITCHEN in the root.
* Last step reboot
That's how, I do it now.
Just to add
If your not sure what permission the file needs to be. You can always check the original file permission first, before you edit your themed file permission.

Choose font also when cooking in kitchen, and after extracting your "kitchen theme", you will get a folder "fonts".. Don't need to try root explorer. Download "Font Changer" from Market (It's free) & choose fonts you downloaded..
Thanks, I'll bear that in mind.
I need to over-haul my guide again - go away for a week and a load of new ways to root the Arc are invented
I'll try and flesh out the UOT section at the same time.
Boot Animation.
You don't need to upload any files from your phone to UOT for bootanimation changes.
Select the BA you want and have UOT cook it for you.
Get the zip file and open it..
go into /system/media
copy and paste the embeded sanim.zip somewhere on your PC, outside of the kitchen ZIP.
Rename it to bootanimation.zip
copy that to your SD card
use root explorer copy from SD card to system/media
change permissions to rw-r--r--
All system files/ apps should be rw-r--r--
he guys I want to confirm here that the UOT zip can be aplied trough the new CWM all works perfectly fine its not so much fun but a lot easier you know
Pull-down Animation
Do you have any idea how to get the pull-down animation to show? It's in the SystemUI.apk that i made, but does not show.
Sorry, exactly what animations are you referring to?

On the UOT kitchen you can select the option of having an animation for the background of the pull down status bar... c status bar mod
So far i've only gotten the android circle option to work, tesseract and the matrix have caused fc's and resulted in loss of status bar...
Ps I think animation pull down background causes our arc system to lag a little... just a little so be carefull... I will continure to test the other mods and report back to c if any others work
PSS step666 thanks for all your work in helpin getting our arc modded like a street racer... lol
Oh, yeah, I see now.
That option wasn't there last time I used the kitchen.
I would imagine any unnecessary animations would cause lag.
Also, the compatibility issues may be due to SE's use of the slightly unconventional 480x854 screen res but that's just wild speculation on my part.
How are you applying the mods?
Using the manual file-replacement method discussed in this thread or flashing the zip using CWM?

Wow step666 i never thought about the 480x854 resolution being the culprit for the fc's.. thats y u r the man, lol
Yes I have been using the manual file-replacement method and switching the permissions to get my themes to work because I have a locked bootloader, but sim unlocked... hopefully blagus can find a solution soon (he seems to be on the right track)
I'm not the man, I'm just thinking out loud...
It just struck me that the page in the kitchen were you mod your notification area specifically states 480x800 and while a fixed image would stretch ok, an animated one might now.
But that doesn't explain why some animations work and others don't.
I take it you're not getting any errors from the kitchen when it spits out your modded apks?
No errors or shft errors... everything cooks just fine but like i said i've tested three animations and only one works.. its just such a pain in the ass to keep building mods and waiting for them to cook and then applying them only to get fc's... but I will keep trying and report my results
Thanks, any feedback you can provide is very much appreciated.

[Q] VoiceMail Removal

i have the Voicemail Icon on my Status bar ALL the time.
NO it's not a service provider issue. Nor anything else. it's just something i have to live with it (i live in Iraq, and trust me these things are normal here)
WHAT I NEED IS: is it possible to REMOVE the icon from the system so i can't see it on the status bar anymore????
If your rooted you could find the png file in framework-res.apk or systemUI.apk and replace it with a transparent image other than that i cant help sorry.
Yes Rooted. and Yes i want to use this method (either delete or make it fully transparent)
BUT: where can i find those? directory ???

BTW, Thanks for your concern and kind help.
I have found the file its stat_notify_voicemail.png in framework-res.apk.
Can you copy your framework-res.apk from system/framework with a root file manager and upload it and ill replace the image for you.
If your not sure how to do this let me know and ill try to explain.
Ive modded the file to be transparent just needs injecting into your framwork
can you teach me how to replace the PNG inside the APK? so i can do it myself in the future.
Thanks again ( A LOT )
update:
the Framework-res.apk is over 10mb big and won't load (unless i zip it and send it in 2 parts) ... it'll be great if you tell me how to replace the png.
Sure i can we like a user who likes to learn
first you need winrar http://www.rarlab.com/
1. using a root file manager (this is a good free one http://www.ghisler.ch/board/viewtopic.php?t=30417) copy your framewor-res.apk from system/framework to your internal or external SD Card
2. Copy it off the SD to your pc.
3. open the framework-res.apk on your pc with winrar
4. Navigate to drawable-hdpi
5. drag the modified stat_notify_voicemail.png i attached into drawable-hdpi leave all the options as they are and press ok.
4. copy the framework-res.apk bk to system/framework *you might get a force close or random reboot (dont worry its normal)
5. when phone has rebooted navigate to system/framework and change the permissions to as per my pic.
6.reboot
7.???
8. Profit
Hope that made sense!
Never will the voice mail icon annoy you again
My upload didnt work properly ive rar'd it up hopefully will work better this time
no matter what i do or use it won't let me edit (over write - replace - rename) the framework-res.apk file.
i replaced the png but can't replace the whole apk
PS: is there a way to permanently stop the Voice mail. (like uninstall the functionality from the phone)
You need to set your file system to writable, try this.
1. Download es file explorer from the market
2. In options tick root explorer
3. Tick mount file system as writable
4. Copy the file using es explorer
-possible reboot
5. go bk to system/framework in es explorer
6. long press the file - properties and change permissions to match my pic
6. reboot
hopefully that should sort it and you still get voicemail
ps. this shouldn't need saying but im gonna say it anyways, make sure you have a CWM recovery backup first just incase something goes wrong and you can restore

Great mod, makes it even easier to flash all these fantastic roms coming our way!
So is this something anyone can apply to any ROM they're currently running just by pushing it via adb ? If so, where do we push it to?
will work on any 1.02.605.6 rom that is deodexed and rooted
So I dig through Root Explorer a bit and found android.policy.jar in /system/framework, I assume we just push it to there then do a reboot and we should be good to go?

Yes, push it to /system/framework/
The question of how to adb push files comes up alot.
A long time ago I made it easy for myself since I do it often by creating the 2 scripts in the attached. Extract them to a folder and all you have to do is drag and drop the files over the appropriate batch file.
Just boot into recovery, mount system, and do this.
For example this jar file would be dragged and dropped on the
2_FRAMEWORK-Push_(Drop Here).cmd
This assume adb is in your system path. If it is not you will find out quick.
Do we need to be in recovery to push via adb on the Rezound? I tried doing it and kept getting this:
c:\sdk\platform-tools>adb push c:/sdk/platform-tools/android.policy.jar /system/framework
failed to copy 'c:/sdk/platform-tools/android.policy.jar' to '/system/framework/android.policy.jar': Permission denied
Am I doing something wrong or is the Rezound just a bit funky? I made sure to set everything to R/W in Root Explorer, since I was originally getting a "Read-only file system" error.

you must be rooted... make sure the jar is either in your adb folder or you have adb in your path
adb remount
adb push android.policy.jar system/framework
adb reboot
I am rooted, and was trying to do this via adbWireless, so maybe the connection was wonky even though adb said my phone was connected. So I dunno what's happening, so instead I just Dropbox'd it over and moved it via Root Explorer, phone is rebooting now so we'll see if that worked, I'm assuming it should. Maybe the adb remount command would have helped. I'll give it a whirl with that for ****s and grins.
EDIT: Moving inside Root Explorer worked, thanks for supplying this file man! Sooo much better than the damn battery pull lol
How does one make this flashable? I did move it via rootexplorer but it's not showing the extra settings after boot.

make sure adb is in your enviromental path....
then open cmd
type

thanks.... added to op.... i was gonna make one but trying to focus on my rom instead... the 4 in 1 was a must though
That looks great! I always thought the quick settings menu had weird choices on stock.
Wondering if there's any reason you took out bluetooth though? I guess I don't use it that much but I turn it off whenever I leave my car at the shop cuz otherwise my phone calls/music go to the car if I'm hanging out and they have it turned on. lol.

That looks great! I always thought the quick settings menu had weird choices on stock.
Wondering if there's any reason you took out bluetooth though? I guess I don't use it that much but I turn it off whenever I leave my car at the shop cuz otherwise my phone calls/music go to the car if I'm hanging out and they have it turned on. lol.

[How To] Transparent Rosie Navbar and Lockscreen Shortcut Backgrounds [Sense 3.6]

After many flashes and dead batteries I finally figured this out and it was not fun!
Seeing it is a little out of the ordinary I wanted to share my findings for anyone else wanting this mod.
First you need the m10 tools.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1060648
You will also need Rosie.apk for the navbar and Idlescreen_Base.apk for the lockscreen shortcut backgrounds depeding on what you are changing. These are in the system/app/ directory of the rom zip.
Open m10 tools, and select Rosie.apk.
Once decompiled, find the Rosie_navbar.m10 file.
Expand the file until you see the options shown in the screenshot below.
On the data circled in red change the opacity from "1" to "0". (you can also change it to any value in-between like 0.5 for half transparent)
Make sure you select the data how it is shown in the screenshot or else other images will disappear!!
Once done with the edits save and m10 tools will repackage Rosie.apk.
Then push the new Rosie.apk to your phone or install via a flashable zip.

"lightbox_new_window": "New window",
"lightbox_toggle_sidebar": "Toggle sidebar"
}
This is essentially the same process for the lockscreen shortcut backgrounds.
Open m10 tools again, and select Idlescreen_Base.apk.
Once decompiled, find the Lockscreen_Shortcut.m10 file.
Expand the file until you see the options shown in the screenshot below.
On the data circled in red change the opacity from "1" to "0"
Make sure you select the data how it is shown in the screenshot or else other images will disappear!!
Once done save and m10 tools will repackage the apk.
Then push the new apk to your phone or install via a flashable zip.
One incase anything else comes up :fingers-crossed:
Thank you for sharing.
Same to you zhp pilot, you've been pumping out some good stuff!
I don't know if I have something personal against those images  or If its just the fact it looks so much cleaner without them.
Nice discovery
Thanks
With the screen shots this was a real easy mod to apply.
should this work for any htc phone running sense 3.6? i have an evo 3d running the "cool-ics-v10-evoc" rom and when my phone loads i get a black screen with the notification bar at the top. if i put the stock idlescreen_base.apk back in and leave the modded rosie it loads to the lock screen but when i unlock i get the white screen with the htc logo and thats as far as it goes. if someone could please help i would really like to learn how to do this...
did you fix permissions when you replaced the apks?
No I didn't. Sorry. I'm a complete noob to all this. I honestly don't know how to do that yet...

Long press the apk with the file explorer you used, assuming that's what you did. You should see an option for permissions. Make it rw-r--r--. If that's confusing then check the permissions on another apk in the system folder. Just make yours match the existing. If you didn't replace the apk via a file explorer, more info on your method would be helpful.
After making changes to the apk I saved it to my desktop. Opened the rom I was working with and replaced it there while on my computer. Then reflashed the rom to my phone. Made a copy of the rom first in case it didn't work I could easily go back to the working one... Which is what I'm using now.

Oh. Well nevermind the permissions thing then. Doing it that way would have set them correctly.
Do you have any idea what I'm doing wrong? I tried your transparent nav bar from here. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1814171
But it didn't do anything for me. Once the phone rebooted the nav bar looked the same as before...

I have experienced some versions of rosie that are very fussy. After m10 edits i have had to decompile and recompile with apktool (no other edits) just to properly compress the m10

That mod only works on the rezound due the updater script. It specifically uses the mount points for the rezound.
The issue may be due tho the fact your are placing a modified apk into the rom zip. The modified one has a broken signature and/or one that doesn't match the other files. When you boot a rom for the first time, the signatures have to match. After the rom boots once, it no longer does sig checks on the system folder. I would suggest placing the modified apk into a flashable zip and flash it after the rom has booted.
Alternatively, you can adb push Rosie.apk to the phone or manually replace the file with a file explorer that has root access.
If it still doesn't work, then the problem is with the apk itself.
Well...didn't get home till late last night, had to be to work early today, so I didn't really get a chance to try everything. I did try to manually replace the apk using root explorer and after doing that and setting permissions right, pressing the home button did nothing. Pressed back button to back out of root explorer and got to a white screen. And that's it... Tried rebooting my phone, same thing, a white screen... Idk if those other options will work but I'll try when I get home today...

no prob, glad you got it working. The only other thing I was gonna toss out there was if you had signed them but i don't think that m10 tools breaks the signature anyways.
