Ok so I have seen that when you download a Rom, sometimes they ask that you flash the latest radio and or kernel. So how do you find out what the right one is for the Rom you are tryin to flash. And on top of that I have no idea what a radio image or a kernel is or does so if any one knows a good link to school me on that I'm sure that would help. Thanks

For radios, USUALLY the latest released version is the best. There are some situations where an older version may actually work better for your carrier (telco). You can find a list for GSM HTC Hero radios here: http://www.villainrom.co.uk/forum/showthread.php?307-Gsm-Hero-Radio-Roms-Download-Links It is VERY, VERY important to flash the correct radio for your device, otherwise you will probably brick it.
For kernels, the ROM dev usually (99.9% of the time) includes the kernel so you don't have to worry about it. Some users though want different performance out of their devices and MAY flash another kernel.
This sticky provides good advice http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=797740. It is from the XDA GSM Hero dev section.
Is a hero the same as a g2? I have a t-mobile us g2. So would hero radios work for it? And would I flash the radio or Rom first?

Oh and if you do flash the wrong radio can you not fix it be recovering a backup

I might be wrong but I think your phone is like the HTC Desire Z. If it is, this is the wrong section of XDA for you.

Don't think so. Just try not to flash the wrong one.

ok, seriously - what he said is correct, but I too am uncertain if this is the correct place for you.
I know the xda title is HTC G2/GSM hero. but I think the GSM hero and G2 actually use different radios? It certainly could be true anyway and I would not take a chance by flashing a G2 radio or any other radio without confirming with a real bonified G2 user.
edit: we're 99% hero users here.

The G2 Touch (this section of XDA) was/is offered by T-Mobile UK. Also known as the GSM HTC Hero - offered by numerous other carriers.
To complicate things further, there is also a CDMA HTC Hero. Different animal altogether.
Just be careful!
Flashed the radio.... nothing bad happens... but I just flashed the minui rom..... bad ARE!

Hey guys just switched to Verizon from att. On my inspire I could run any radio I want on any ROM. I've done some searching and research on this but still don't have a definitive answer. What do I need to watch out for when flashing a radio? Can an incompatible radio to the ROM your running cause damage or just signal problems? And is it like the evo3d do u flash radios and 4g radios separate or are they one package? I'm a pretty experienced flasher i've rooted and rom'd quite a few phones but this leaves me a little confused. Thanks for the help.

Flash a Froyo radio for a Froyo ROM and vice versa for Gingerbread.
If you flash it incorrectly, you won't have service.
Welcome aboard.

Pretty much all you're answers can be found in my thread stickied at the top of Q&A, as well as the links to the radios.
Hi everyone , I recently got my EVO 3D and it's GSM , so...can I flash a CDMA one because I saw there are different development forums?
Thanks in advance!
Its not possible unfortunately. The radios are different, if I understand correctly, and flashing a cdma rom on a GSM device is a surefire way to permanently brick your phone. Hope this helps.

Short answer: Yes, but the device will not function properly.
Longer answer plus some optimistic hopes: Flashing only a CDMA ROM onto a GSM device will not permanently brick the device (as quoted above) given the ROM follows standard conventions of only containing the system partition and kernel. The ROM more than likey will not work though assuming the kernel allows the device to boot correctly.
At this point, Android incorporates GSM/CDMA radio types fairly low level into the kernel radio drivers and operating system framework files. Perhaps at some point in the future, both GSM and CDMA will be incorproated into the same kernel and operating system making it easy to switch between. Currently, this isn't the case and requires a bit of work.
Hopefully in the future with more devices receiving one radio capable of both, GSM and CDMA, we could also have the software to support it!
Hope that helps
Thanks for the correction! : )

thanks for the quick responds , so even though i won't flash the radio the rom won't work..?
that's quite unfortunate since I saw many good roms on the CDMA forum...
again thanks!
So I've been trying some custo rom's and kernels and found out that every single one give me call drops, the rom's where good and smoother than the stock one, but every call i started drops after 10-15 sec. So i get back to stock and everything is working fine. I'm from Croatia, don't know if this has something to do with it. Anyone has any idea??

Do you have a gsm or cdma phone? Are you flashing the correct rom/kernels for your phone? Have you updated radios?
I have a gsm device, hmmm the radio...I used the one that came with the cooked rom...so if I install the rom and use the stock radio maybe it will work?! I'm not a newbie but tottaly forgot to try change the radio. Good one mate!
Sent from my HTC EVO 3D X515m using xda premium
There are a number of users that have similar issues with call drop. Most have something to do with the proximity sensor. Search the Rom threads because most devs have a patch for the call drop issue that you could try flashing as well... Or just keep your conversations brief

first thing, if you have call drops, is radio changing... then, all other things such as various kernels, roms...
radio isn't part of cooked rom, radio is part of official, shipped rom...

Roms don't change radios. If you'd like to try and change it you'll have to s-off your phone and flash the radio through fastboot (fastboot flash radio radio.img). Be careful to flash the correct radio for your device (gsm), cdma radio could brick it.

OK, so I have screwed things up a bit. I just wanna go back home. I have CWM Touch installed and the bootloader is unlocked. I flashed a ROM that obviously was not for the TMO version of the one. Now I have no 4G and all sorts of other problems.
Why did u not make a backup it's first rule before flashing .
You may have to wait for someone to dump the system ,wait for a stock.img
To flash in hboot .
As far as I know there haven't been any T-Mobile specific roms made yet
If you head over to the Android development section in the forum you will see that there are no roms yet that is
A good indication

Are you guys having problems updating Facebook? Every time I try to update Facebook app in revolution / arhd / trickdroid it will hang. I see the arrows light up for H on the data then goes grey swaps to 3g and back to H really quickly and then goes grey completely meanwhile my Facebook just says updating. No Internet connection not available just updating. It's super frustrating and it happens on blinkfeed too. I had to go back to the tmobile rom that says 4g regardless of umts or hsdpa and then Facebook has no problems pulling updates.
It's super weird. And it's driving me nuts I want to run a custom rom with kernel! Well at least now I can run a custom kernel Lols

Any way you can explain that in a way that someone who knows nothing about rooting and bootloader unlocking and development would be able to understand.

Basically our phone is branded as the att version. With a cid number that does not match the one that the dev edition possesses. The only way we can spoof the cid to match it is to achieve s off.
Your phone comes s on(security flag on),meaning you can't touch lower level things like hboot, radios, and cid numbers.
S off is a difficult process so it will take some time until it's available, and even when it is available its only recommended for advanced users who know what they're doing. It's very easy to brick a device when it's s off

Incorrect, it will restore and run just fine on att. S-off isn't necessary unless doing ruu.
