[Q] Help a complete noob - Vibrant Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi,
My vibrant is on official 2.2. I hate it because it lags too much.....so i want to try some roms out here.....but the problem is i cant seem to gain confidence in doing so.
So request you guys to please provide me a step by step guide what i am required to do in order to make this hw perform as it should. I dont have root also in my phone.

Lucky for you, multiple step by step guides exist. Search for the vibrant bible. Everything you could need to know.

Searched the bible but couldn't find anything which will guide me how to do the flashing and gain root. Can anybody please point it to me.

Im new to all this myself but I think you skipped the gain root access step. To the op...look in the Vibrant Q+A forums which this thread now resides in and one of the sticky threads at the top should say something like "Noob guide to flashing roms, gaining root .....etc". This is the step by step guide I think you are looking for.
This should get you started. It did me and my next step is to actually flash the rom....once I get the confidence.

if i'm on stock rooted and need to unroot, would i need to flash the eng build first then this image or just this? or is it also possible by just a factory reset?

No need to go to the eng build. As to go to the eng build you would use another img file.

Thanks Bro I was stuck on the T-mobile boot screen and this image worked. The one from eugene373 does not work it says something like newer or older version and it fails
Thanks wesgarner I would start a new thread and make it a sticky
also thanks eugene373 for all of the roms without you I would have never got my mt3g but for some reason wesgarners worked and yours didnt.
It might be cause I took out my sim card when I used wesgarners i never removed my sim card when using yours, it my need to be a added step.
Thanks

wes do we follow the same instructions as eugene listed?
Ok I'm a little confused. So in order to use this esprimg we need to repeat the same steps again that we did for the eng build or can we simply just put this in the root of the sd card and go into bootloader?
This is the Rom that was On all the TMO employee before Launch!
If you need or have to ask, then likely this wont be much good for you, it's just another Alt. Factory image we have if you want to play with it.. Nothing more
I know it just takes you back to factory but I'd like to know exactly how to do it if ever need be...
Use Wes Rom he Posted..
Regarding the Instructions, I posted them in the OP

I understand what you mean and how to use this rom but when I was stuck on the Mytouch boot screen I am unable to use adb to push.
With wes image i just had to place it in the sdcard and load into Fastboot mode with Volume Down button and Power and it loaded all of the images and took me back to stock.
Either way thanks eugene373 I think that you are so knowledgeable with these device that's its harder for average person like me to follow thanks again

Oh, then I clearly didn't understand what you mean, & for that I'm sorry
Yeah for something like that, you will have to use Wes Factory restore..
I am new to the whole rooting of android phones so please don't haze me too badly for potentially asking a stupid question;
I was successful in rooting my mytouch 3g slide and installed slidemr5 rom onto it. I did not like how light the rom was and some other general things i wasn't expecting so i found this thread and used this rom to revert back to the factory settings and it worked great (thanks eugene and wes). I was under the impression i would be using my stock rom and the phone would still be rooted but when I go to install apps that require root it says that I am not on a rooted phone. Is this normal or did I do something incorrectly? If it's normal than is there a way for me to have this build/rom and the phone still be rooted? Again I apologize for asking a dumb question, I've made it pretty far in this entire process w/o having to post on a forum yet..

Need help with roms and stuff asap

Just got a new vibrant
Just rooted it using z4root app
Other them that I haven't dont anything
I want to install bionix rom
What exactly do I need to do
I have a evo but this phone is a little more confusing on installing roms
check out my Sig and click the pic
A couple of threads up is the vibrant bible. It has a ton of useful information that will help you. The next step after rooting would be to download the app "rom manager" off the market (free) and flash clockwork recovery. This is an essential app for flashing roms and other goodies. Welcome to the community and enjoy one of the most awesome phones available. For future reference, all questions should go in the Q & A section.

ASAP, read the thread linked in post 2.
I have had my Vibrant for 4 days now I managed to root it and install a few roms. I know nothing about this but I found out how important it is to make backups of your phone. After I rooted the phone I installed clockwork mod and made a backup. Using clockwork you can boot to recovery mode with a press of a button. Some roms allow you to just drop the zip in the root of the phone and from recovery mode you can install them easily. Once you find a rom you want to try just follow the instruction provided by the dev. I screwed up a few times and even installed a rom that was not for my phone. If you can get to recovery mode you can fix your phone. Also, to manually get in to recovery mode you need to press and hold both volume buttons and then press and hold power. You will see the Vibrant screen then it will go away and return. When you see it return you need to let go of the power button. Eventually the recovery mode will appear.
Search, search, search and search again. All the info has been organized by mods in the bible. TONS of info including tips and tricks reside in there. Try not to rush to mod your phone, research then make a decision.
Yea this vibrant has been the best thing it's really easy for me it's more easy than my g1 was in my case lol

Well I would say that you should go back to 2.1 through Odin. And to do that, install Odin v1.7 or whatever, and stock jfd along with the 512 pit(I can post the links later, but until then, Google is your friend). Open up ODIN FIRST.. take out the battery, and hold down the volume rockers. Without letting go, plug into the computer and then put the battery back in. When you see the yellow android digging you are in download mode. Now you should see COM(number) on the top right of ODIN on the computer .
Now choose the PDA (t959xxxjfd.tar) and pit file(512.pit), and hit start. Should take about 2-3 minutes to go back to eclair
After you are booted up, download Z4 root (again, find it on google) and root your phone. It will reboot again, after 2nd boot, download rom manager. Open this app and install clockwork mod recovery for Samsung vibrant. It will ask you for root access after you choose boot into recovery, select "allow". It will boot into regular recovery. And you will use the down volume key to select reinstall packages. This will officially install clockwork mod recovery. You may have to do this twice. The way you know is the recovery menu will be green, and have about 10 options. As opposed to the yellow and blue menu with 4 options.
After this, you are golden. You are rooted and have CWM to install whatever rom you choose. I would recommend bionix v1.3. It is an easy install.

I couldn't find out how to root 2.2 so I just converted. Repeating this process has made it quite easy to do this kind of stuff.
Its good practice! But check and make sure the 512 pit is compatible with the jfd, because I forgot.
But yes I woudl recommend this if you plan to go to any other rom. But if you just want rooted 2.2 then don't do this

Installing Custom Rom... A noob

Dear all,
I recently bought an LGP500 and im lovin it..!!!! Came across this forum and found that there are heaps of developments thats taking place in this platform! Really wanna thank each and everyone for their time and effort in trying to improvise on the OS.
I came across [UNOFFICIAL][ROM][stable:6.5.5,testing:6.6] CyanogenMod 7.1-RC1 (Android 2.3.4) and i really want to install it (or in that case, and good GB OS) over my froyo. I have been through a lot of threads on flashing and rooting, but im still very unclear about the whole process. Im not a computer geek, and all these jargon kinda make me feel like a bozo .
As a last resort, im trying out this thread. Would really appreciate if someone could spare some time and provide a simple walkthrough from - (a) backing up the original OS, (b) on through flashing and rooting, (c) to installing this custom ROM and (d) finally restoring it if needed for warranty purposes. Im pretty sure there are a lot of people like me who has difficulty in understanding all these processes and missing out some great developments.
I hope everyone understands this and wont consider this as one of those spam/duplicate threads, where the same Qs are repeated again and again...!
Thanks a lot for any support
Yes, the same Q's are repeated yet again. But I'm in a good mood today and I'll try not to give you much flak for it.
1. Root your phone, use z4root if android v2.2, use gingerbreak (both are apps) if on v2.2.1/2.2.2.
2. Install a custom recovery, of two kinds: AmonRa or ClockworkMod. Search for these threads.
3. Boot into recovery mode for backing up your current rom and installing a new one.
I hope this is a good summary. Before asking any further questions, check out the FAQ link in my signature.
Also read some stickies to enhance your knowledge. The_error has made a very good introduction thread on technical stuff.
In android, for using custom roms, first thing is to root. Then one has to install a recovery. Then make a nandroid backup from recovery. Then wipe everything from recovery and then flash your desired rom.
I suggest you do this:
1. Instal z4root app from market and Root your phone via it.
2. Install rom manager from market.
3. Install clockwork mod recovery via it.
Now you can go to recovery via rom manager or swith off and press and hold for about 15-30 seconds home+volume down+ power button.
Once you are in recovery, you are free to fly.
so which will be the most stable rom (no over clocking) for smooth usage, simple ui, internet and good video playback support. I herd there is problem with some roms not being able to play divx files.
I say rjtchn`s cm7 has the best battery I've had
Sent from my LG-P500 using XDA App
I can't find either z4root or Gingerbreak in the market. Searching XDA Developers I see several versions of z4root floating around, but since my Optimus V is 2.2.1, I gather I should be using Gingerbreak anyway? Pointers to the correct APK appreciated. Otherwise if I should be going the ADB route, pointers to a thread that has working drivers for the O V linked would be appreciated.
Thanks in advance!
OK, to answer my own Question, latest version (that I have tested works) of Gingerbreak is at:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1044765
Now to figure out which kernel or rom to go with...

hey i am a noob and can't understand what to do with those softwares which are mentioned above, is there any step by step guide from starting to end??
any help would be highly appreciable
ok..i am a noob too.. so what all guys are saying is that, let me simplify:
There are basically 3 steps,
first, install a "gingerbreak" app, which is a apk (u can copy it ur mem.card and using file manager (its default in your stock android), u can install it from ur android after copying
secondly, install ROM Manager Free from Market and Install ClockworkMod Recovery from that app(dont fret about technical names..just do it), its easy as click and download
thirdly, download the Custom ROM like Mik's CM7 6.5.6 or something that pleases you and copy the necessary files posted in the Custom ROM'S page, all will be zip files...and restart the phone , By pressing vol.up+home+power button..u Will get to a different screen(that is recovery) , and make a nandroid backup as everyone says(all options are seen in the recovery) ...then clear cache..clean anything and everything..then install zip file from sd card...choose the Custom ROM and Restart (and lastly , forgot to tell you ,navigate by presssing volume keys and menu key as ok button)
..ok...maybe its not simple as it looks,,once you try..it will be easy as taking candy from a baby, thanks to all the guides and developers and all the ppl that supports it.
There are further step by step tutorials , if u search for it.. i was confused as hell too.. dont worry, U Will get the hang of it Noobz

you should really follow the instructions on the rom of your choice, but ill just give you the general scope of things:
1. root phone using one of the methods found here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=901247
2. after rooting, flash custom recovery:
http://androidforums.com/getitnowmarketing/221388-custom-recovery-optimus-one-p500-thunderg.html
3. download rom of your choice from the link in #1 and move it to the root of your sdcard (which is directory /sdcard)
(3.5 you can use titanium backup to backup your apps. the sdcard should stay untouched while you flash your phone but im pretty sure that your internal memory will be erased. i didnt do this and i lost all of my apps so i dont really know where this step should go but i think it belongs here. there should be a folder on your phone with those backed up apps. move that folder to your computer. i didnt do this so im not sure if this is how it goes, sorry. btw this is optional.)
4. boot into recovery (with your phone off, hold home+vol down+power)
5. make a nandroid backup
6. wipe data/factory reset, wipe dalvik cache, wipe cache (follow the instructions on the rom that you chose)
7. flash (your rom name).zip
8. reboot phone (might take a while, thats normal)
the following is if you backed up your apps earlier:
9. move the folder with your apps backed up back to your phone in the exact same directory it was
10. restore it with titanium backup
someone please confirm this.
thanx guys

Can't finish root process for official ICS

New member giant noob here.
Galaxy Note - Official ics 4.04 installed using Kies. I had rooted the phone prior to ICS but now need to re-root.
I did a flash of a program ending in tar through odin. This appeared to be successful. Now am supposed to flash super user. I downloaded the ics superuser but I need someone to give me a detailed step by step proces on completing the root.
It looks like other people are doing it, but I obviously don't know enough. Sorry, but I just don't understand technical references. Need the step by step program.
Thanks if anyone is willing to help
All Odin flashes is .tar files..So that was vague...but I'm guessing that was cwm recovery.
Superuser should be a .zip
Put that on your phone's internal sdcard, or external if you have one, doesn't matter which you choose.
Now power off the phone.
Hold all three buttons (both volume and power)
When you feel a vibrate, let go of just the power button.
When the recovery menu pops up, scroll to install zip from sdcard
If it's on external choose the option at the top, of its internal the option at the bottom well say "install zip from INTERNAL sdcard"
Scroll through the folders/files and find the superuser zip, then select that and confirm the installation.

Also, I think you need to go into Developer options/USB debugging and make sure that is selected, then try rooting.
Usb debugging is for adb while booted into android...
Has nothing to do with root, recovery, download mode, Any of that...it just makes adb be able to see the phone.
And please don't quote op's...
