First boot into recovery (turn phone off, then press volume down + power button) and a white screen with text will come up. Check the line where it says HBOOT-X.XX.XXXX. If that number is anything bigger than 0.57.0000 then you're NOT good to go. (you'll have to wait till that version is supported)
If it's 0.57, you're good to go and follow attn1's guide http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=819715

can i downgrade 2.1 do 1.5?

can i downgrade 2.1 do 1.5?
and where to find 1.5 android os
To download from a 2.1 custom rom to a stock 1.5 rom simply download a new rom here:
http://www.htc.com/uk/supportdownloadlist.aspx?p_id=283&act=sd&cat=all
If your on a generic phone choose the last one in the list. You will be asked to input your serial number, this is to ensure you get the right rom for your phone.
This will revert your phone back to the Sep 11 2009 update (1.5).

you can't and you lost the root
i wait the official eclair rotted by our chefs
ok...tks...will wait for the rooters to crack it open
It may be a long wait or never that the bootloader gets unlocked on the 2.1 RUU.
HTC have really tried to lock that rom down. Once you have root access its always best to stick to custom roms, the warning was on this site for months now.
I just revert my hero from 2.1 update 1 to stoc 1.5 hero UK JUSt by flashing with the old stock rom.
this is nice!

When you say root do you mean so you can add other ROMs or do you mean so you can add/remove system files?
More information would be handy go to settings > about > software version and post

There is my newbie guide in my sig or there is a "1 click method" being discussed in a topic in the dev forum which you might want to look at.

Well first of all your going to need a recovery ROM onto your hero to allow you to install custom ROMS. Some ROMS come with ROOT, Some Don't.
Because you have build 2.73.771.73 you will need to first install the flashrec application and then download a recovery ROM and use flashrec to load it onto your phone. The recovery ROM is the gateway to unlocking your device for maximum potential.

Thanks for your reply,I will try that.
Sorry, but if I do the above procedure using the MODACOPATCHEDRECOVERY 1.0 rom will this mean my hero is then rooted?
Thanks

I have no knowledge of this ROM, but what you can do is ask from where you got it from.

[Q] Questions for installing custom ROM on Asian Aria

Hi, I have an Asian HTC Aria (bought it on a recent trip to Hong Kong). I tried to upgrade to Froyo (2.2), but it keeps failing and displaying the Red Exclamation mark icon (I spoke to HTC but they said it was a phone destined for Zambia and therefore I would have to speak to them, but they where no help as they don't even have the Aria as a product.
I want to upgrade the Aria to Froyo so have decided to try using a custom ROM.
I'm new to this android custom ROM thingy and I've been reading avidly the forums for the last week or so, I think I'm ready to reflash my Aria but still have some small questions that I would be very grateful for answers for.
1. I want to create a nandroid backup without installing clockwork recovery so that I can revert to the stock (Asia) ROM should installing a custom ROM still not work, will this also back up hBoot, and if I use the unrevoked method of gaining root will I be able to take the phone exactly back to stock?
2. What exactly is a RUU, and will this one (probably) work for my Asian Aria?
Asia HK-RUU_Liberty_hTC_Asia_HK_CHT_1.35.708.4 or will my nandroid backup perform the same function?
3. I will probably want to use Liberated Aria Froyo Series FR008 12/13/2010 **Fully working OC Kernel**. Will this work with an Asian Aria even though its based on a European Rom? Is there anything else I need to be aware of for an Asian Aria?
4. When I install Liberated Aria Froyo Series FR008 12/13/2010 do I also need to install a new kernel? eg (FR008 Default or Hong Kong Shipping 2.2 Kernel) and what is the difference between these kernels?
Thanks heaps for your help guys,
Michael

1. A 'nandroid' backup is a function under ClockworkMod, which requires that you root and install CWM as a custom recovery. It makes a complete backup of the phone except for the HBOOT loader. It is very handy when you are in the process of trying out different ROMs. If you don't like one, just reboot into ClockworkMod and restore one of your backups.
2. RUU is an official HTC ROM Update Utility that will load a new ROM version to your phone. A RUU will usually include the ROM, HBOOT and Radio images. The only exception to this is that if you flash the Froyo 2.2 RUU with the newest HBOOT loader code, you will no longer be able to root your phone. Even if you install an older RUU with Android 2.1, it will not overwrite the
3/4. Liberated FR008 should work just fine. The default install has a custom kernel that allows you to overclock your phone's processor to run faster. The Hong Kong kernel is a stock HTC kernel that does not have overclocking ability.

First of all read this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1154600
Then you need to unlock and root your phone: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1136261
Dont forget to flash the new CWM on your phone!
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1138541
And last but not least, go find you favorite ROM.
There are plenty: Alien, CherryBlur, Ninja, etc...
Hope this helps!
I have the Bell Version like you arshiv. Only Think I can add is be carefull as some roms only support the AT&T version for now. I am running CherryBlur with Faux's OC Kernel Undervolted and it is very nice being Android 2.3.4.
