Hi All,
This is my first post on here and I've just obtained a Dell Streak a few days ago so I'm just feeling my way around it.
When I travel abroad I want to be able to monitor the amount of data I've used. Is there an application that will give me this?
I also want to be able to switch off email at night between certain hours (for obvious reasons) and short of manually switching to Airplane Mode I can find no other way of doing that. Is there an application for this?
Questions questions....
Thanks in advance for any advice you can give this 67 year old.

APNdrdoid - it is a free aplication that lets you turn off your data connection, without turning off the phone's calling features or text/picture messaging. I keep a toggle on/off widget on my homescreen for easy access.
Data Counter widget - (also free) keeps track of WiFi use and Data use. It lets you pick different starting days, so that you can match up with your billing cycle. For example, my billing cycle starts on the 8th, so this app keeps track of data since the 8th of each month, then resets on the 8th for the next month.
I don't know how it works internationally, but you can also dial *3282# from your phone, and you will recieve a text message from AT&T liting out how much data you've used (*DATA# = *3282#). You will get a message that reads: "Next Bill Cycle 02/08/2011. Data (MB): 126.7 of 200. Messaging: 5537 of Unlimited", for example.
These are the methods I use to keep close track of my data.
Every One has the Favs I use 3G for Data control and find it very accurate
Many thanks for the replies, especially to Lufc for moving the thread. Sorry about that. Not the best of opening posts on a forum.
Lufc, sounds like Luton Football Club!
I will try the suggested apps and thanks again. I haven't actually managed to get my Vista system to run Dell Mobile Sync yet. Keeps crashing with an unknown error. I can read the SD card, but that's all. Anyway, that's another thread another day perhaps. Cheers

I am looking for a simple app to automatically schedule my phone to be silent (no notification, no vibration) except for phone calls during the night, with different schedules for weekdays and weekends.
What is my best option?
Thanks
See if there's a version of "Sound Schedule" for Froyo. On 2.1, it does pretty much what you ask for $3.
Actually I just installed and set up timeriffic. Seems to do all I need, I'll test in the next few days. And it's free.
Yep ^^ i was going to suggest timmerific! Locale is another good alternative
I use the free version of Audioguru. Timeriffic's user interface was too confusing for me.
I was going to suggest Tasker. It can do that and a whole ton more.
I also vote for Tasker
I'm going to check out timmerific myself. I'm a Tasker lover, but my wife has zero use for Tasker but her freaking SMS and Email notifications drive me nuts all night, especially when she puts the the phone on the headboard.. blleep bleep bzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz.
In case anyone else has trouble finding it (from the spelling ) here's the appbrain link:
http://www.appbrain.com/app/timeriffic/com.alfray.timeriffic
I have my custom battery profile to turn off data after 15-30 mins and that does the trick at night without having any apps. Might want to look into that.
I use an app called Profile. I have a weekly schedule to adjust volume, bluetooth, wifi, notifications, etc based on time. Has worked flawlessly for almost a year, with plenty of updates & added features.
http ://market.android.com/search?q=pname:com.noimjosh.profile
won't let me post a link, because I haven't posted enough. Sorry.

Another vote for Tasker. Although I'm not sure I'd call it "simple".

Thanks to everyone for the vote of confidence re: Timeriffic.
We love hearing your feedback. For the poster who thought it was a bit confusing, as we look to make it better your thoughts are encouraged. We realize it can always be better, though in most cases it runs silently with no need for an interface other than occasional adjustment to a profile. Looking forward to hearing from everyone.
And thank you for using and sharing our little app.
As I said in another thread, I get a lot of use out of "Good Night!". You can set it to receive phone calls only and even narrow it down to who can call in. Set it to happen during certain hours and certain days of the week.
Phone Schedule
I wasn't satisfied with available apps, so i decided to write my own app that would do all the volume/wifi switching and other stuff automatically according to my own schedule. Several weeks ago i uploaded "Phone Schedule" to google play. It's free and free of ads as well.
Another Scenario
OK, I would love to find a way to turn off all notifications, with the exception of one app. My wife has a weather app installed and wants to use the weather alerts for that app at night but we don't want any other notifications coming across. Is there an easy way, or app, that will do that? I've not been very successful at figuring this stuff out in Tasker. Tasker looks extremely useful but the couple of minutes I get per day to look at it, I just can't get what I want to work.
Thanks
+1 for Tasker
I have mine set on silent at night, but I've also got a list of "VIP" numbers set up that it will allow through.
That's fine, but I'm not talking about cell numbers. That's a different ballgame all together, IMHO.

I think you may be confused. I was replying to OP question.
DISCLAIMER:
1. I just got done perusing 10 pages of hits for "airplane mode" and everyone is trying to do something opposite of what I'm doing. So if there was a post long ago about this, I'm sorry I could not find it.
2. I'm not really that android-savvy. Just good at following instructions.
QUESTION:
How do I enable Airplane Mode "permanently" so that a child cannot disable this mode?
EXPLANATION:
I have several android devices (Droid Xs, specifically) that have clean ESNs and are not currently being used on any carrier. I also have children (5,3,1).
I've SBF'd, rooted, and removed all unnecessary APKs, leaving only a few educational apps and games for the children to use. And, yes, I enable Airplane Mode. They love having their own little "mini" tablets and being able to be like the grown-ups.
Unfortunately, the oldest has a knack for pushing all sorts of buttons and inadvertently turning the phone's radio back on. Now, I'm a bit worried (should I be?) that an inadvertent phone call or use of the carrier's data is going to cost me something.
Yes, I know that I have not associated the ESN with any carrier; however, as I'm sure most of you know, when you dial a number with a non-subscribed number, it still asks you if you want to make the call and charge it to a credit card - at least, this is what the phone did the last time this happened.
So, bottom line, I want to disable my child's access to any carrier's cellular and data networks. And I want to be the only one that could possible re-enable that access.
If there was some way to enable Airplane Mode "permanently" and remove access to all toggles, settings that could disable Airplane Mode, then this would ease my mind. Obviously, I would want this condition to exist only until I either reflashed the phone or had to do something very convoluted (perhaps editing some setting manually via command line or ADB?).
If there are other options, please let me know. I just need a solution to minimize the chance that my 5-year-old could inadvertantly access the carrier's networks.
Thanks in advance.
and they still should/will call 911 regardless of plan

I believe there is a guide out to remove items from the settings menu. It will take a bit of editting but its detailed! Then you can use any widget to reenable it. Or if you dont what that chance aswell pick a.launcher where you can disable widgets.

You can probably prevent the modem from loading or something, but maybe I misread your post : why not remove the sim card altogether ?
Freeze dailer.apk and some system app about dailing to network.
Dailer.apk, voice dailer, and few more

The apps that you can't remove, you can password lock. Slap a password on settings and the dialer and any other app you couldn't remove but don't want the kids in and don't give them the password. There are multiple apps available to do this, and I believe I saw one or two for free on GetJar. GetJar also has a lot of free games as part of their promotion, which may be good for your kids. It's a legit app store, no pirating or anything.
I believe that there's also a script to disable the cell radio. I don't know much more about it, but it may be something to look in to.

Thanks for all the responses:
@ltdanno360 - they will not be using the devices as phones. And essentially, my children have an adult with them 24/7. The adults just do not want to have to look over the child's shoulder 24/7 to see what app the child is running.
@tarends - ok, it'd be helpful to know where this guide exists; however, now I have something to search for.
@Bubble-be - it would be nice to disable the modem; unfortunately, Verizon Droid X do not have SIM cards... am I wrong?
@melvinchng - ok, I'll look into de-bloating those APKs too. I do recall reading something about that.
@plainjane - I'll look into those password apps and scripts.
Anyhow, I do have some direction now and will follow-up (eventually)...
Thanks again, everyone!
Get a real carrier that uses sim cards.

That script works great, I have used it for a while, but ever since android moved to the "fused location provider" that script/mod also disables the gps which I still want to function because I do sometimes take my son with me to play Ingress via wifi tethering to my device, and with that mod, Ingress can no longer get an accurate location. neither can google maps or earth.
Overdue followup

Thanks for the reply, even though it's a few years later. I actually took a look at the script and it looks like it's perfect! However, since my original post, I've found an app that does everything I want it to do and then some:
Kids Place by kiddoware.
(Sorry, I'm prevented from posting links until my 10th post... I'll update the links later. For now, just Google it.)
It let's me selectively turn off the radio for apps. I can configure which apps they have access to and for how long. I can blacklist/whitelist websites. The feature list is impressive and practical. And it works on all three of my very old Droid X.
hi all,
i'd like to choose to be called by my boss during the working hours and couple of more people, but not by everybody. are there any apps that i could program to do so automatically for certain hours/days?

This might be accomplished using Tasker. I'm not really sure, I haven't used that app much...

I haven't use them in awhile but there are call filter apps that will allow you to block calls and whitelist certain contacts at scheduled times. Check out the market.
Before I flashed a new rom what I used was AutomateIt and Selective Silence. AutomateIt to silence my phone between certain hours at night when I sleep. Selective Silence to whitelist certain numbers (family and certain friends) so that when they called my phone will still ring even in silent mode. However, now that I'm on ICS, Selective Silence no longer seems to work.
folks thanx for taking the time.
none of the above does it for me.
i really looking for an app that filters calls on scheduled hours.
u guys may know CoolLoserTech from youtube. i had seen the guy demoing such an app. but he has almost a hundred vids with hundreds of reviews.
i'm writing to him too, but the guy gets a 1000 questions every week, i dont think he'll have time.
anyways, if anybody comes across such an app, plz leave a note
Try Ghost Phone. it isn't a real call blocker...it just "hides" sms or call of a chosen number. Give it a try
i dont thinnk that any of the free android market apps can do this, but check out ipmart-forum.com android section and there you will find plenty of apps designed for privacy/security/organisers/ect.. im using it for a long time without any problems...
trial and error my friend ;]]
hope it helps...
thanx a lot guys.
I shall surely give them a try
Tasker can certainly do this, but it's not a simple one click operation. Check out their recipe pages - you can script nearly anything with Tasker and some of its addons.
Anyone able to get SiriusXM app to work on NT?
It installed for me with no problem, but when I try to login, the progress circle just spins.
Maybe I'm having a dense moment, but wouldn't the Nook need GPS hardware to pick up XM? Then again, I only have XM in the car and may be missing something.

Yea, I should have known that. I had the trial internet option for awhile several years ago.
I get the same thing. I'm sure it's just the Sirius app itself. It's notorious for being one of the biggest POS apps in the Market, and it appears that Sirius and/or the devs couldn't care less about all of the complaints in it's comment section.
same issue at first
I was having the same issue, just a "loading" indication, then it would just close out with no message or error. Today I just got the updated apk, and now it will go through with logging in and updating some files, but then when it's about to pop up with the channels, I get the Force Close notification.
Q&A go to Q&A. Getting tired of moving threads.
this not connecting is still happening...it's a shame too, I listen to downloaded Stern Shows and would love to take this task and put it on the tablet instead of listening on my phone and wasting that battery....
any updates would be great
For the past week I have been getting a card popping up constantly throughout each day asking me if I want to set a particular location as my place of work.
Thing is, I have had my work location set for months and the new location it keeps asking me to set is a holiday club for disabled kids that I took my son to for a few hours a week ago and I haven't been to the location before or since.
It wouldn't be so bad if the card had an option to dismiss it or something but it only has the option to set or edit and if I swipe it away it just comes back a little later.
How on earth do I stop it spamming me with this card?
UPDATE:
I have been through maps and google now settings and deleted all references of the mentioned location and yet still, it keeps bringing the same card back!!!
isn't there a stick box to say that you don't want that anymore?

Nope but I really think there needs to be...
Arghh! It gets worse.
As well as the previously mentioned card, I have had two more cards popup today asking me to set TWO MORE different locations as work place.
Thing is, I haven't left the house all day!!
Any way to completely reset Google Now's memory or something?
I've deleted ALL maps history and that hasn't helped.
